he Lake Texoma Association is a nonprofit organization, over 60 years old, with the mission of preserving and protecting Lake Texoma as well as promoting the entire Texoma region. The LTA regularly engages with Stakeholders from all over the Texoma region, to include the US Army Corps of Engineers which manages the Lake Texoma reservoir, as well as the hydropower entity Southwestern Power Administration, water supply users, and legislators both in Oklahoma and Texas at the Federal and State levels. The LTA is managed by Terri Weir, Executive Director and Brandi Burkhalter, Assistant Director. We invite you to become a member of the Lake Texoma Association and help us achieve our mission. Lake Texoma is critical to the vitality of the Texoma region and the maintenance of this beautiful water resource which, if conserved and protected, will be here for generations to come. The Lake Texoma Association has four specific events each year to promote the association and raise funds to fulfill our mission. These are the ways that you can partner with us to ensure not only the success of the LTA, but the entire Texoma Region. Each year in January we release our “Guide to Lake Texoma.” The guide is an award-winning publication and, as you will see as you look through its pages, full of information to help our guests experience the region at its best. You can partner with us in producing this guide through your advertisements.

Each year in March we organize the Burning of the Socks event. This is a lake wide, multiple venue event, each venue sponsoring and planning their own activities. The LTA assists with promotion, flyers, and publicity. This year’s Burning of the Socks will be held on Saturday, March 18th. Visit our website for more details, pick your favorite venue, and go out and celebrate the arrival of a new season at Lake Texoma. We raise much of our funds through our Annual Bash for Ca$h. Between ticket sales, live and silent auction proceeds, the Bash keeps our association thriving. If you’ve never been, you’ve been missing out! Come support the LTA and have some fun with us – Thursday, June 15th at Tanglewood Resort and this year’s theme… wait for it… CASINO NIGHT! Finally, in October, we hold our Annual Golf Tournament. Last year was a terrific success. If you’re a golfer, watch for more information! The tournament is scheduled for Saturday, October 7th at the lovely Tanglewood Resort. If you don’t golf, you can support the LTA through hole sponsorship! What we do at the LTA may not affect you and your business directly, but the economic and environmental success of this lake affects us all. Become a member, advertise, come to the Bash, or participate in the golf tournament. The success of the LTA mission means that visitors to this area may continue to enjoy the many opportunities for fun and excitement this region has to offer. Your Lake Texoma Association Staff

It’s no secret that the Texoma area has seen a veritable explosion of brewers and distilleries in the last few years—beverage lovers in North Texas, Southern Oklahoma and all around the world are taking notice. reweries like 903 Brewers of Sherman and the Sneaky Tiki Brewery just outside of Mead, Oklahoma, as well as distilleries like Ironroot Republic Distilling of Denison, have all cropped up in a matter of about four years. However, these NORTH AMERICA IS HOME TO new institutions of Texas and OVER 5,000. In the 1980s, the combined number of microbreweries and small-time distillers could be counted on two hands. Today, North America is home to over 5,000. In 2015, craft beer made up 13 percent of the total volume of the U.S. beer market, while craft spirit sales broke almost $2.5 billion in retail sales.

Ironroot Republic Distilling

Ironroot Republic is anything but small-time. Texoma’s only distillery, located at 3111 Loy Lake Rd. in Denison, has been making a name for itself since its inception in 2014. The owners, brothers Jonathan and Robert Likarish, chose Denison because of its unique history with the wine industry. (Denison resident Thomas Volney Munson (1843-1913) rescued the business from a devastating pest epidemic in the late 19th century). They set out as innovators in the craft spirit game, and their award-winning work is an important contribution to the entire process. Ironroot produces corn whiskey, vodka, grape brandy and gin, but their top selling product in Texoma is bourbon. Ingredients are sourced locally (some even come from their mom’s garden) and, unlike most other Texas distilleries that outsource their grain alcohol, Ironroot mashes, ferments, distills and ages their grains on site. And environmental considerations remain at the forefront of the Likarish brothers’ operations. “Over 95% of the grain that we use, grows within 60 miles of the distillery,” Robert said, and spent grains are

donated to local farmers. Conservative and conscientious, they have pioneered flavors like their signature brandy using native Texas Orange Muscat grapes, creating a taste that can’t be found anywhere else. The style and savvy of the Likarish brothers and their products has earned them many accolades. In 2015, the American Distilling Institute named Ironroot’s Carpenter’s Bluff Moonshine “Best of Category” among clear corn whiskeys and gave it a coveted “Gold” distinction among spirits entered

in the competition. Their Hubris Whiskey 2016 Vintage was even hailed as the best corn whiskey in the world at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition last year. “We also released our whiskey in the UK in collaboration with the historic Berry Brothers & Rudd,” Robert added. It’s no wonder that Ironroot Republic Distilling was also given the 2016 Governor’s Small Business Award—their reach and expertise is undeniable.

Ironroot Republic Distilling set up shop in an old boat dealership off of Highway 75 just a few years ago, but already they are making their mark on the world with their commitment to the environment, their craft and the quality of their products. Ironroot products can be found in area liquor stores or at the distillery itself. Tours take place every Saturday at 1 p.m. On the first Saturday of each month, the bar and lounge opens from 2 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Visitors are able to enjoy the repurposed furniture, steampunk-style bar and energy efficient building design with the comfort of a drink in their hand and live music in their ears.

903 Brewers

Jeremy Roberts, founder and brewer at 903 Brewers, is now one of Texoma’s pioneers in the brewery business. At last year’s first annual Texoma Craft Beverage Conference, Roberts gave an in-depth, very hands-on tour of 903’s Sherman location, stating that he hoped those interested in the process might pursue their own passions. Roberts opened 903 Brewers with his wife Natalie in June of 2013. KTEN News reported in October 2012 that after visiting a larger brewery, Roberts “had found his calling.” The one-time homebrewer and his staff began hosting beer tastings and partnering with community organizations like Women Rock to

promote their signature flavors. After opening their first location on Elm Street, south of Sherman’s downtown area, the company continued to make a name for itself by participating in local events and holding tastings, tours and trivia nights. But 903 Brewers most distinguishing feature is, of course, its selection of beer. The company currently produces six varieties of beer across a broad spectrum of flavors. The

Chosen One is a light American ale with a surprising hint of toasted coconut, while the Sasquatch, true to its name, is a heavy chocolate stout with a rating of 10.5% alcohol by volume. The 903 Blonde is a smooth beer with a big heart: portions of its proceeds go directly to Women Rock, a non-profit that provides support and assistance to local men and women battling cancer. 903’s best seller is The Land of Milk and Honey, a crisp stout brewed with local honey from Crouse Honey. Their two newest flavors are Crackin’ Up, a pecan porter, and fruity I.P.A. called Mythical Creature. These 903 flavors can be found at stores and restaurants all over Grayson County. You can also visit the brewery, located at 1718 S Elm St. in Sherman, for a game of trivia every Thursday night at 5 p.m. or for a tour Saturdays at noon. Roberts and his wife dropped big news last August when, after expanding quarters at the Elm Street location, they announced the purchase of the Lee School Building at 1002 Walnut St. in Sherman, just north of

the city’s downtown area. The couple plans to use the 25,000 sq. ft. facility to house two restaurants, a brewpub, a private ballroom rentable for events and a stage for live music. (cont. on next page) >>>

Sneaky Tiki Brewpub Just across the pond near Mead, Oklahoma, Martin Proper, co-owner of the Sneaky Tiki Brewery and Lake Texoma Lodge and Resort, is just getting his feet wet in the brewery business. The Sneaky Tiki has been open for over three years but only began brewing about a year ago. Patrons who already loved the unique food and tropical dining experience of the Sneaky Tiki now praise the restaurant’s two signature brews. “We currently brew two beers,” Proper said, “Texoma Lager and Tiki Red Ale.” While the Texoma Lager features a lighter flavor, the Tiki Red is a crisp amber ale. A new jalapeno-infused beer is also in the works, according to Proper. “There’s nothing better than lounging by the pool, listening to live music under the stars [and] drinking an ice cold Texoma Lager,” he said. Established in the 1950s as the

“Honeymoon Lodge,” Lake Texoma Lodge and Resort is historically one of the first of its kind in the area. Apart from lodging, the resort often plays host to events such as meetings, reunions and parties and boasts of exclusive services like couples fishing trips with local striper guides, sporting at the nearby Chickasaw Pointe Golf Club and other gaming ventures at the Texoma Casino in Kingston. The resort is located at 3263 US-70, just outside of Mead, Oklahoma. The Sneaky Tiki, just a short walk (or swim across the pool) from resort lodging, offers an extensive menu with half-pound burgers, cooked to order steaks and their famous Royal Red Shrimp that “tastes like lobster.” A clear majority of Facebook reviews (43 of 44 to be exact) rated the food, beer and service five star. Reviewers also raved about the fun, tropical atmosphere of this restaurant on the lake. “We have live music on most weekends during the summer months,” Proper said, as well as events like holiday festivities, professional sports viewing parties and karaoke throughout the year. The Sneaky Tiki also finds time to support their community by sponsoring little leaguers, hosting Easter egg hunts and locally sourcing both their ingredients and live acts. Enjoy the serenity of this small, specialty brewing operation while you can. Just last year, the Sneaky Tiki and Lake Texoma Lodge and Resort served as one of the locations for a new comedy series called “In the Rough,” starring Oklahoma native Ryan Merriman. The show will center on Jake Hamilton (Merriman), a young professional golfer managing an eccentric staff at a rural country club. When the show airs in 2017, the restaurant and resort may require reservations booked several months in advance!

Fee and h o got your offe g the fis bite e, fightin r prize. strik ding you lan Please let me introduce you to Lake Texoma. For seventy years anglers have flocked to the Big T. The striped bass fishing is World Class. The largemouth bass fishing is so good. Texoma hosts over 50 tournaments every year. Crappie, pan fish and up to 70 other species are here in Lake Texoma. Let’s not forget the gigantic blue catfish. Catfishing may be Texoma’s best kept secret.

World Class Striped Bass Fishing

The lake was stocked with stripers 50 years ago. Texoma is rated the #1 striper lake in the country. The lake has the best natural reproduction of all striper lakes. Boosting a liberal daily limit of 10 fish per angler per day speaks for itself. The year ‘round open season allows anglers of all ages that chance of a fish of a lifetime. There are several ways to catch striped bass. You can cast artificial lures, troll or use live bait to capture these fighting line sides. Vicious bites and extreme fights make striper the best fighting fish in freshwater. Many an angler has had sore arms and the girls have tender tummies after a day of striper fishing. Take the kids and wear them out and take them home snoring. There’s never been a better painful pleasure.

How about The Bass Fishing?

Largemouth bass up to 10 pounds seems to be happening more the past decade. Smallmouth bass is off the charts. We should see a new record this year. 7 pounders are showing up. The bass fishing may be the best ever. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) are to thank for management of the great fishing. Both agencies maintain supplemental programs by stocking the fishery resource. 24 | Lake Texoma Region | 2017 Guide

Why Two States?

Lake Texoma divides Oklahoma and Texas in the heart of the Red River Valley. Texoma has the state of Oklahoma on its north side and Texas on the south side. The lake is only 90 minutes from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Only a simple 2-hour drive from Oklahoma City. You will need a special $12 Lake Texoma License to enable you to fish the entire lake.

Love Me Some Catfish

Texoma is known for great catfishing. The monster blue catfish world record was caught in 2004.The huge fish weighed 121.5 pounds. It’s not uncommon to catch large catfish but most are in the 2-15-pound range. Those are the tastier to eat. You can catch catfish on a rod and reel, trot or jug line.

Sweet Meat Crappie

Texoma has the biggest crappie of most lakes. Many fishermen are surprised when that big crappie is 2.5 plus pounds. The lake record is a hefty 3.23 pounds. There are many places to catch crappie. Baited boathouses, homemade brush piles and the many buoys that Oklahoma has placed lake wide.

Come A’ Running

Year in and year out this great lake keeps on going. Generations of fishers and newbies find the best fishing lake ever. Statistics show that 2.5 million of the 6.5 million visitors are fishermen. Whatever you do, you have to put Lake Texoma on your bucket list of adventures. There are many marinas, Chambers of Commerce and lake wide professional fishing guides to make your Lake Texoma fishing adventure a success.

Boating

Lake Texoma BOATING

B

oating is for families! It’s difficult to think of a more perfect activity to bring your family together than a day out on the refreshing water of Lake Texoma. Lake Texoma has been attracting families to enjoy the adventures found on its waters since shortly after the lake’s completion in 1944. It’s just as true today as it was then that Lake Texoma is an ideal spot to boat and recreate. Whether you want to cruise the lake in your powerboat, experience serenity in your sailboat, find a secluded cove to set anchor, test your limits while wakeboarding, fish one of the world’s greatest fisheries, or just beach up on the islands, Lake Texoma has 89,000 acres of water calling your name. Lake Texoma, and the region, play host to numerous marinas and boat dealers which provide boat sales and rentals, marine service and supplies which will allow you to enjoy your extended vacation on Lake Texoma no matter your boating preference or season. We look forward to seeing you on the water!

Real Estate & Development

Lake Texoma REAL ESTATE & DEVELOPMENT HOW DO YOU WRITE AN ARTICLE ABOUT REAL ESTATE THAT ISN’T BORING? YOU START IT WITH “BLAKE SHELTON BUILT A HOUSE HERE!” SO, OBVIOUSLY, YOU SHOULD TOO!! But really… Real Estate around Lake Texoma is doing great! We’ve sold more homes this year than at this time last year, over 150 in Marshall County. Average home prices are steady at a healthy $145,000. We are seeing numerous older lake home owners choosing to relocate or sell their lake homes due to aging and health issues, meaning the market has plenty of options. Bargains are abundant if you are willing to put in some work to update properties. Wood paneling and

Updating these cosmetic issues can often be done on a budget and leave the new owners with a modern, trendy home. The new Chickasaw Resort to be built near the old location of the Lake Texoma Lodge is much anticipated and should generate renewed interest in the older Catfish Bay and Washita Point communities near the

The Marinas and nightlife centers across the lake are rejuvenating in order to provide lake goers fun places to come together. Look to the marinas this summer for concerts, community dinners, poker runs and fishing tournaments. Two of the marinas will be participating in the 2nd annual Burning of the Socks to celebrate the transition from socks to flipflops as the temperatures rise. This is sure to be
