Dragon Playground

Inspired by the dragon motif commonly associated with the Chinese community in Singapore, the dragon design playground was unveiled to the public in 1979 as part of a series of “miniature adventureland” playgrounds. Housing Development Board (HDB) wanted to change its static playgrounds to designs that were more fun for the children.Between the 1970s and 1990s, the HDB designed and built their own playgrounds for public housing estates in Singapore. Many were inspired by local culture and were designed by Mr Khor Ean Ghee, who worked in HDB as an interior designer. In 1993,

after a local paper reported about the public playgrounds’ poor state and lack of safety standards, they were deemed unsafe for children. HDB stopped designing its own playgrounds and a major upgrading exercise was carried out. Concrete structures in sandboxes were replaced with plastic modular ones sitting on rubber mats. The old playgrounds were replaced by new playgrounds from international suppliers that not only met international safety standards but were also cheaper to maintain. Today, only 3 dragon playgrounds remain standing, and only 1 with the original sandpit. Locals who grew up in the 80s and 90s would have fond memories of these playgrounds, and others like the pelican and rabbit playground.
