They say that “no man is an island.” On the surface, we are all individuals with separate physical entities, however beyond that we are all tied and interconnected like a giant and complex system. Beneath the exterior is a vast array of personalities and relationships that enables one to be connected to another. Beneath the surface, lies the ties that binds. In a room filled with chairs, what makes and what breaks them? Set in a classroom environment with concrete floors and walls, the chairs were strewn and stacked like an

urban jungle. Similar to societal conditions, where many a time people are thrown into harsh situations and struggle to survive.

By taking a handful of chairs and upturning them to their complex end, we tried to establish a connection. Each chair signifies a person, and the tissues that are used to tie the chairs together represents the human connectivity. The formation of the word depends on both materials to work, like how human beings depend on one another to form a society.
process Initially we tried to form the word by placing the tissue on each wheel, however it did not work due to the lack of connectivity. The word was visible, however it wasn’t very clear and was difficult to decipher. Thus we decided to tie the tissues and weave it around the wheels of the chairs to form the word, tie. As a result, the word became more legible, and it also emphasizes the definition of the word. Moreover, the tissues rely on the chairs and vice versa, portraying the interdependence that one would generally associate with ‘tie’. The message thus became stronger albeit usage of the same elements.
