PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Cal Taylor

Why do we snowmobile and what causes us to be so passionate about it? Let start by saying that once upon a time I was an avid skier, chasing storms and finding a stash of powder 3 or 4 days after a storm and thinking how can life get any better than this. Then I was introduced into snowmobiling and I remember thinking, “this will be great, now I have my own lift to get to the top of the hill.” That was 10 years ago and even still I haven’t made it out one time with my skis and snowmobile on the same trip. I was able to increase my desire to be out in the winter by adding a track and motor to my skis. I now could get face shots and untracked powder several days after a storm. This was great, why isn’t every powderhound out snowmobiling? For one, the equipment is a little bit more expensive and it’s hard to only go out for a few hours. Lastly, you must have backcountry skills that involve avalanche awareness, wilderness first aid, survival skills, a good sense of direction and some stamina just for starters. That’s just the tip of the iceburg of the knowledge and skills it takes to recreate in remote areas in the winter time in Utah.

Why are we so passionate about snowmobiling? Why are we willing to sacrifice so much of our time and money for this? This is something that is going to take my entire lifetime until I have an answer to these questions. I will tell you though, some of the places I have been to on a snowmobile with my wife and kids, and friends have been the most rewarding, serine, majestic, beautiful and peaceful places on earth. So my advice to you would be to go out and research why you snowmobile and what causes you to be so passionate about it. I know I’m going to go out and do the same. Dealer Imprint Goes Here

Even as the “Biggest Loser” it will go down as one of the BEST Saturday’s of my life! Thank you so much??? I thought it was fabulous and you folks did a marvelous job. Everyone seemed happy and it was fun bumping into other riders at the stops and being able to visit. Everything was so positive and seemed so well planned and prepared for. I thought the USA poker run event was very well done. I think everyone had a good time. It was fun to meet people from other clubs and areas. Kudos to those who worked so hard to make it happen. KSL was there with their movie camera. Does anyone know when their report aired or will air? SLVSC NEWS by Les Thompson

This season has started out great the snow is wonderful and our club members have taken full advantage of the fresh snow. Many of us have been out multiple time finding out how much we retained from last year and how much we didn’t thanks to good friends helping get you out of a bad situation as you can very well see. Our first club ride was Jan 7 we thought it was looking to be a cold one with the temperature on the ride up dipping to -18 degrees below 0 but when we got to the parking lot it was 20 degrees above 0 almost 40 degrees different which made it a great day on the mountain. With all the snow this year our annual ride in February to Alpine Wyoming promises to be a memorable on, if anyone is interested in going we still have room just contact us for more information. Hope to see you on the mountain.

THE SNOWMOBILE COMMUNITY NEEDS YOUR HELP! by Curt Kennedy, USA Director, Public Lands

Did you know that snowmobiling is more than just an awesome way to enjoy and explore the winter backcountry? Our chosen form of recreation can also be considered a significant economic engine that contributes to the success of Utah’s thriving economy. This is particularly true for rural areas that offer few outdoor recreation and tourism opportunities in the summer months and do not have much non-snowmobile economic activity in the winter months. We know from a study released in 2001 that snowmobiling in Utah generated annual expenditures of approximately $52.6 million that went into the economy. Additionally, over 500 snowmobile-related jobs produced about $12 million in income and $2.5 million in state and local tax revenue. This is valuable information that can be helpful in sustaining our riding areas and retaining programs related to the entire infrastructure of snowmobiling within Utah. It is always a consideration in the development of new Forest Plans to recognize the economic impact an activity has on the economy. Additionally, grooming programs and trailhead facilities are more easily justified when the economic impact of our snowmobile activity is highlighted. But, let’s face it; a lot has changed in 16 years and we need new data to understand what the current economic impact of snowmobiling is within the state. So, where do you come in? The Utah Snowmobile Association has contracted with the Institute of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism at Utah State University to undertake a new, up-to-date economic impact study of snowmobiling in Utah. The core of the study will be a mixed-mode survey of registered

snowmobile owners using a sample that follows current survey administration standards that will produce analyses that are scientifically credible and defensible. It is expected the sample size will be approximately 1,500 of the nearly 24,000 registered sleds. It will be extremely important to the success of this project that all snowmobilers who are selected to participate in completing the survey do so in a timely and accurate manner. We anticipate the survey will be mailed to the sample of registered snowmobile owners by the end of March 2017. You will have the opportunity to complete the survey online, which will make the process easy and less time-consuming. We cannot overstate the importance of this study and we hope we can count on you to make it a success.

GSSA NEWS by Debbie Hudman

Greetings from Golden Spike Snowmobile Association. Hope everyone is getting a chance to get out and enjoy the snow. My husband’s hand injury has delayed our family from getting out but we hope to remedy that this next weekend. Our Club had an enjoyable Christmas party at the beautiful home of Gary and Kim Goodnuff. The Club furnished prime rib and turkey and members brought pot luck. There was food and friendship in abundance. We had a fun gift exchange and even had an appearance by Santa Perigo Clause who passed out candy canes to all. It was a fun start to the holiday season. Several of our members have been very active in riding this year. I have to borrow from “Bruce the Ambassador’s” comments in sharing their experiences with you. He indicated the ride on December 18th was minus 7 degrees as four crazy sled heads pulled into Monte Cristo. There was four feet of new deep bottomless powder and it was one of the most challenging days they have ever had riding. They lost track of how many times they got stuck. On December 26th the “Men in Black,” which consisted of Jeff Eddings, Jeff Bernard, Keith Grandin and Bruce Grandin embarked on Monte Cristo. There was three feet of new dry powder on top of three feet of old packed down snow. They lost track of who got stuck the most. On the lower side of Monte their sleds were completely submerged in powder going down the big open meadows. They all got stuck a “whole bunch of times.”

14

On January 7th it was minus 15 degrees as they headed up to Monte. According to Bruce, they attempted to go over to Powder Mountain but never made it due to the fact that they didn’t quite know how to get there without trespassing. The snow on lower Monte was again so deep that they were all getting stuck on a regular basis. Dennis Kowalewski dropped his brand new Polaris 600 into an 8 foot ditch and came to an abrupt halt and Jeff did the same thing just a few feet away. This day Dennis won the contest for who got stuck the deepest. Our Annual Ride will be in West Yellowstone over President’s Day in February. There are still rooms available if you’d like to join us. Give our President Jeff a call. It’s being a crazy winter—be safe on and off the mountain. Hope you’re being able to enjoy the beautiful snow. See you on the mountain.

President Obama Designates 2 more National Monuments The President in a move to add to his legacy has named 2 more National Monuments, Protecting 1.65 Million more acres, bringing his total monument designations to 25. One of the newest is in southeastern Utah and the other is northeast of Las Vegas. Many local residents are very unhappy with this decision as it was taken without input from them. Representative Jason Chaffertz (R-Utah) blasted the president, calling the move “terribly arrogant he unilaterally — he is taking 1.35 million acres, that's more land than there is in the entire state of Delaware, and re-designating it as a national monument”. In his statement on Wednesday, the lawmaker said that president's decision disregarded "years of painstaking negotiations with a diverse coalition" that provided a "comprehensive bipartisan solution." Hopefully with the new President coming in, we can convince him to sign off on laws limiting the declarative powers of the president!

Fill the Coffers - The “Green” Push is On! For those of you who follow the exploits (antics?) of the selfascribed “environmental movement” you know the recent election has fostered a “green” push of a different type by the most visible state and national “environ-mental” groups. The “green” in question? The kind we find in our wallets. The good old US Dollar...The Wilderness Society, for example, has been asking for contributions over the Holiday Season-not a surprise, but the sweetener this time? An anonymous donor will provide matching funds of up to One Million

Dollars. The initial offer to followers was a doubling of any contribution. As I write this on the final day of 2016 the offer is now a 10X match! This unique push for the “green” is not alone. Many groups who generally or specifically oppose our use of OUR lands are fearmongering to relieve their followers of increasing amounts of this “green”. These $$$ are the elixir of the movement. Create a ‘need’ with a dubious “crisis” and self-perpetuate the need for your organization–and additional funding. While we might argue

the real societal value of this approach, it is a sound business model. The size of many of these organizations proves that point. On an individual donation standpoint-not so much of an issue, but: It has long been a concern of snowmobilers that significant funding for these opposition groups comes from corporate entities (and their foundations) supported by snowmobilers by buying products that contribute to a profitable corporate “green” bottom line. That “green” circles back, in part, as donations to the groups that wish to restrict our

Who is ACSA? ACSA is the National Organization that fights for our rights as snowmobilers and as citizens of the United States. Many groups think they should be the only ones allowed to use lands that our tax dollars pay for. We fight against precedent setting decisions that can be used on the Federal/State Level barring us from using the lands we pay for. access. Sometimes this is by design, sometimes it is simply an uniformed response to a solicitation. In any event ACSA leadership will be discussing what to do about this timely topic in the coming months. An excellent project has been proposed to allow snowmobilers to gather some knowledge about where their “green” goes after the cash register. A component to educate the funding entities about our concerns is also likely to be forthcoming. Stay tuned and thank you for your support of ACSA. It is time to ride!
