PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
By Jeff Eddings
N
ovember is upon us and we have yet to see any measurable snow at the higher elevations. The news is calling for some snow to pile up in California and even some snow to fly here. We might even see a skiff of snow down to the valley floor this weekend. That will get everyone excited about the snowmobiling season. Although we didn’t see much precipitation in October, no need to fret yet! With the soil being saturated from all the summer rain, if we have some good storms in November it should provide us with a good solid base that is less prone to avalanches that will carry us through the winter. I guess time will tell!
On October 23rd was the Utah Avalanche Center’s (UAC) annual fundraiser at Brewvies, Salt Lake City. The UAC premiered Boondockers 11 and also unveiled a new Avalanche Awareness video that has been in the works for the last couple years. The Brewvies event was well attended and proved to be another success. USA once again provided the food for the event at no cost to the attendees. The Intermountain Snowmobile Show on October 24th and 25th also seemed to be a huge success and enjoyed by many. SnoWest and USA bring you this show every year and this year’s show was extra special as it was SnoWest’s 40 Anniversary. SnoWest was giving out all kind of free stuff to attendees. There were many vendors to visit, many products to check out and purchase. There were also many new vendors this year compared to other years. Of course, USA held its Silent Auction again which is a huge fundraiser for us. We had many nice items, vacation trips this year to auction off. Thanks again to all the businesses that donated to our silent auction. The swap meet outside this year was an even bigger success than last years and we hope to make it a bigger event every year. New memberships at the show was surprising up as well, something we haven’t seen in years! I want to extend my thanks to all the USA volunteers at this year’s show. They all worked very hard and spent countless hours of their personal time preparing and working at the show. I know there were some tired looking faces on Saturday night! I would also like to thank the staff at SnoWest as they did an outstanding job putting the show together, especially you Robin! Ensure to check out USA’s annual fundraiser this year later in this issue. Thanks to the Jackson Hole Snow Devils and the Flying Saddle Resort in Alpine, WY we are able to offer a great snowmobile Get-A-Way package for 4 luck individuals. Enter to win a chance to win four days at the World Championship Hill Climbs in Jackson, WY. Tickets are VIP so you will be allowed into the show and sit in VIP seating and reap all VIP benefits. Spend all four nights at the beautiful Flying Saddle resort in Alpine, WY where you will stay in one of two private cabins and dine in the steakhouse utilizing one of two $150 food voucher to pay for your grub issue.

Ensure to check out next month’s issue where I will bring you up to speed on all the upcoming events, especially the USA members ride. Remember, there are many individuals and organizations who would love nothing more than to restrict your access to “Ride the Greatest Snow on Earth”. These individuals and organizations are well prepared and have deep pockets to further their cause. So help us fight them so we can continue to access the back country and enjoy the sport we love…Join USA today! Join me next month where I will bring you updates on all the upcoming season’s events…..especially the USA Members ride. Until then, pray for snow and keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up!
FIND THE SNOWFLAKE INSIDE THIS ISSUE AND YOU COULD WIN! Congratulations to Jamie Adelsgruber from the Golden Spike Snowmobile Club. Jamie correctly identified that the snowflake was located on page 12 embedded into the Flying Saddle advertisement. Jamie will receive a Fly Racing Matte Black and Silver Kinetic Dash Helmet. Find the snowflake in this issue and e-mail the location to utahsnowscoop@yahoo.com and you’ll be entered into a drawing to win a $50.00 Snow Big deal Gift Certificate. Winner will be notified by e-mail and drawing to be held on November 24th.

GSSA NEWS
by Jeff Eddings
Although not much has taken place since last month, the Golden Spike Snowmobile Club did have many volunteers at the Intermountain Snowmobile Show this year. Many volunteers spent a couple hours each performing security at the show. This is an excellent way to raise a little money for our club, as well as getting into the show for free and supporting a great cause. I would like to personally thank the following members for volunteering: Preston and Debbie Hudman, Arny and Ronda Olsen, John and Lorie Barlow, Stacey and Nathaniel Eddings, Erin Worrell, Jamie Adelsgruber, Dennis Kowalewski, Lonnie Nelson, Larry Ramsey And speaking of Larry Ramsey, Larry is the newest member of our club and we would like to extend a warm welcome to him. Larry lives in Oakley, UT and comes a long way to be part of our great association. Welcome Larry and I look forward to riding with you this year. Our next club meeting will be on November 14th at 6:00 pm at Dennys, Ogden. As always, the Golden Spike Snowmobile Association is looking for new members to join the club. Joining an organized club is an excellent way to support the sport you love and a great way to meet new and exciting people. There are many organizations that would love to see snowmobiling banished from the mountains and the areas we ride. These organizations are well funded and have countless members. Let’s not give these organizations the upper hand; join a snowmobile club today! If you would like more information on the Golden Spike Snowmobile Association and/or how to become a member, please call me at 801-510-7791 or visit: www.ridegssa.org
THE WOLVERINE IS AT IT AGAIN!
by Curt Kennedy, USA Director, Public Lands
E
arth Justice and other wildlife advocacy groups filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service claiming the agency acted illegally by ignoring best available science on wolverines when the agency did not list them as an endangered species. The wolverine breeds their young in deep snow-covered terrain, which can potentially mean significant curtailment of snowmobiling if the animal is ultimately listed. We are not aware of any wolverine in Utah. However, if you ride in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington or Oregon, this could be a big deal. We understand another coalition of advocacy groups plan to file a separate lawsuit headed by the Western Environmental Law Center. We will keep you posted.

RECREATION GROUPS SETTLE ILLEGAL WILDERNESS LAWSUIT BOISE, ID (October 6, 2014)--A newly-filed settlement agreement would withdraw restrictions on motorized and mechanized access to “Recommended Wilderness” Areas (RWA) in Idaho’s Clearwater National Forest. The settlement comes in a lawsuit filed in 2012 by the Idaho State Snowmobile Association and the BlueRibbon Coalition, which alleged that the Northern Region of the Forest Service (FS) created an internal “recommended wilderness policy” that illegally limited management options. In the settlement, the Forest Service “dispute Plaintiffs’ claims” but acknowledges “that regional issuance of documents described as guidance for forest planning, including planning for RWA management, has led to confusion and misperception regarding the role that such documents serve with respect to FS planning, including motorized travel planning…” The FS commits in the settlement to issue a new decision that will govern motorized and over snow access management to RWAs. The agreement states the FS will endeavor to implement a new decision before the 2014-2015 winter season. In the absence of such a new decision, management will revert “to previous management direction” which has authorized snowmobile, motorcycle and mountain bike access to some portions of these remote areas, particularly including the “Great Burn” along the north central Idaho-Montana border. “We are pleased by this development,” stated Sandra Mitchell, Public Lands Director of the Idaho State Snowmobile Association, the lead plaintiff. “The concern over administratively designated wilderness will likely continue, but at least in this case the Service is agreeing to reconsider what we contend was an illegal expansion of the agency’s role,” Mitchell concluded. The settlement is awaiting court approval. Wilderness advocacy organizations have intervened in the case, and court documents suggest they will object to the settlement agreement. “We have on numerous occasions reviewed similar settlement agreements where the parties’ roles were reversed,” noted Paul Turcke, the Boise, Idaho lawyer representing the recreation plaintiffs. “We look forward to responding to any objections the intervenors may seek to raise,” added Turcke. The case is entitled Idaho State Snowmobile Ass’n v. U.S. Forest Service, Case No. CV-12-447-BLW. A copy of the complete settlement agreement may be viewed at http://www.sharetrails.org/uploads/ISSA_v_USFS_Case_CV-12-447-BLW.

EXTENSION GRANTED ON WINTER TRAVEL PLANNING RULE
T
he Judge in the litigation by the Winter Wildlands Alliance against the Forest Service granted an extension to January 31, 2015 to publish a final winter travel planning rule. Essentially, this means we will likely see a status quo for our snowmobile opportunity for the 2014-2015 winter season. However, the following season may well be up for grabs. Once the final rule is available, the entire snowmobile community will need to become prepared to participate in the painstaking process of trying to protect the areas in which we love to snowmobile. USA plans to be a key participant here in Utah and we hope to provide important communication about the process and suggest points that should be brought to the forefront.

UTAH AVALANCHE CENTER
by Craig Gordon
T
he annual Boondocker premier at Brewvies was an amazing night and our most successful ever. We offered two standing room only shows and by all accounts‌everyone was stoked! Dan and his crew produced a first class video with remarkable footage, leaving everyone psyched for the upcoming winter and wishing we could ride half as solid as the Boondocker athletes. In addition to having a great time and seeing old friends, the Avalanche Center raised nearly $9,000‌. simply incredible! Of course, it takes great partners to make a successful event and our good friends at the Utah Snowmobile Association were super generous, providing a tasty dinner of pizza and nachos for all who attended. Since the 2004-05 season, Tri-City Performance and Polaris have helped the Utah Avalanche Center with a loaner sled. Here, Mike Poulsen of Tri-City hands the keys of this 2014-15 RMK over to Craig. This years ride looks very fast!
