PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

ell wait mode is over and hopefully everyone has had an opportunity to get out and enjoy all the new snow on the ground. Personally, I have had the opportunity to go out three times so far, twice at Monte Cristo and once from Cub River, Idaho. Surprisingly enough, all three rides turned out great! The Cub River ride was extremely cold starting out, but as the day went on the temperature rose to where it was bearable. Now all we need is for Mother Nature to keep those winter storms rolling over Utah. The future weather patterns look favorable for just that, so let’s keep our fingers crossed!

On January 23rd, the Utah Snowmobile Association is going to be holding it’s first-ever Poker Run Fundraiser Ride at the Strawberry Snowmobile Complex. The ride will commence from the Strawberry Bay Marina at 9:00 a.m. and travel along a pre-determined route approximately 43 miles long. Along the route, participants will be required to stop at four pre-determined locations where they will draw a poker chip to complete their Poker Hand. The first draw will be at Strawberry Bay before the ride. Each stop along the trail will be sponsored by a local snowmobile club where riders can get more information about the benefits of belonging to a snowmobile club. You may even be able to get a cup of hot chocolate at one of the stops! Once riders complete all four stops along the route they will return to Strawberry Bay Marina to turn their poker hand in to be validated. All hands must be turned in by 3:00 p.m. After the ride, we will award the winners for the three highest poker hands and the worst hand. After the poker hands are validated and the winners announced, all the poker hands will be entered into a drawing for a great prize. So, the more poker hands you purchase the more chances you have at winning the cash and the raffle prize. We will also have many other raffle prizes to be awarded. The event will conclude with an all you can eat prime rib dinner catered by the staff at Strawberry Bay Marina. And if you have ever had the prime rib out at Strawberry Bay, you know it is good! Unfortunately, because of the popularity of this event the dinner reservations are already sold out. However, you do not have to attend the dinner to participate in the Poker Run and the raffles. We also have something special for USA members that bring their membership card with them to the event! Make sure to see the advertisement located in this issue of the Snow Scoop and plan on coming out to Strawberry on January 23rd for a fun day of snowmobiling with new and familiar people.

guess you could call it somewhat of a hierarchy of snowmobiling associations. The Western Chapter is made up of the state associations of Utah, Colorado, Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Montana and Wyoming. The Western Chapter’s mission is to address snowmobiling related concerns as they pertain to our unique riding areas in the west. Each year the Western Chapter holds an annual summit where all the western states leadership come together to address their concerns. This year the summit is in West Yellowstone, Montana from February 18th – 20th. For more information on the Western Chapter please visit www.sledwest.org. We are still planning on developing a TV spot that highlights some of the great snowmobiling opportunities we have here in Utah. This TV spot will be aired across the United States and is made possible through a grant from the International Snowmobile Manufactures Association with assistance from the Utah Snowmobile Association, Department of Natural Resources and various other community partners. Currently are plan is to highlight two riding locations within Utah. Our goal is to show the rest of the country some of the great riding we have here in Utah. We are tentatively planning on filming the footage sometime in March. I will have more details as they unfold. On a closing note, I just want to remind everyone to be safe on the trails. Remember it is still early in the season and although we have had some good snow pile up in the mountains, they dangers still exist. I have heard numerous stories lately of people wrecking there snowmobiles on obst the end of the day I would like to see everyone return to their families and loved ones in one piece, and hopefully the snowmobile will be in one piece as well.

If you’re unfamiliar, the Utah Snowmobile Association belongs to the Western Chapter of State Snowmobile Associations, which belongs to the American Council of Snowmobile Associations. I

Until next time….keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up!

UPDATE ON RECREATIONAL TRAILS PROGRAM by Curt Kennedy

We have reported in the past that an important funding program within the overall Highway Transportation Funding Bill was in jeopardy of being eliminated. Known as the Recreational Trails Program (RTP), Utah, as well as other states, has received a small allocation of the gas tax paid by off-highway vehicle use that can go towards both motorized and non-motorized recreational projects. Past uses include trailhead enhancements and assistance in the purchase of groomers. The House of Representatives and the Senate finally reached an agreement on a five-year deal (2016-2020) to fund highway transportation which essentially left intact the RTP from its previous program. The “FAST Act” was signed into law by the President. Annual funding remains at the same $85 million level over the five years and will be distributed among the states according to the same formula that has been in place since 2009. This is a major accomplishment for the numerous recreation groups that joined together to help support RTP. USA wrote letters and made phone calls, as did the American Council of Snowmobile Associations. It is great to see a combined effort pay out!

WHY PARTNERSHIPS ARE VITAL TO OUR AVALANCHE FORECAST PROGRAMS by Craig Gordon

A

ccess to remote regions for our snowmobile specific avalanche advisories forecasts has always been a challenging proposition, but since 2000, the Utah Snowmobile Association helped the Utah Avalanche Center form critical relationships with sled dealers and manufacturers. Since the turn of the century, Tri-City Performance, Wellers Recreation, Big Pine Sports, and Buttars Tractor in conjunction with Polaris, BRP/Ski-Doo, and Arctic Cat respectively, donate loaner sleds to the Avalanche Center each winter. This extremely generous partnership allows us to see more terrain, issue more accurate forecasts, and ultimately save more riders lives. The loaner program also enables us to connect with critical user groups inside the sled community. We offer state of the art avalanche training for local snowmobile shops and their staff, Sheriff Departments Search and Rescue groups, State Parks Staff, and of course, hi-end recreational riders. Riders range from trail-sledders to extreme riders playing on the numerous high alpine ridges and open bowls throughout the state. Before these programs, Utah experienced numerous and preventable, avalanche fatalities and close calls involving snowmobilers.

Kenny and Bob from Buttars Tractor in Tremonton share high-fives with Logan forecasters Toby and Paige after solidifying their partnership.

Paul and Rich Weller along with Craig and a new Ski-Doo Summit 800.

Big Pine Sports generously helped out the Skyline advisory program with this sweet ride. Mike Poulsen from Tri-City Performance gives Craig a set of keys to a new 2016 Polaris RMK AXYS.

GSSA NEWS

by Deb Hudman

G

reetings fellow snowmobilers! Hope your year got off to a good start and that you have already put several miles on your sleds this season. The Golden Spike Snowmobile Association got off to a good start with our first ride on January 1st. We had six members and six guests. Some friends of Preston and I joined us and we were glad for their knowledge of the Cub River area. On the drive to Cub River, coming over Logan Canyon, some members were concerned when the temperature dropped to -22 degrees. It was 13 degrees when we left the Cub River parking lot. Guests Glade Tolman and son-in-law Justin Teeter, guided us through areas new to most of us, occasionally bringing us to spots we recognized visiting before. We visited the site where a C46 Cargo plane crashed in 1953 killing over 40 people on board. We also visited a memorial to a young lady who died when she hit a tree a couple years ago. It was a beautiful day, good company and a great ride. We kept warm as long as we were moving. It was fun being with friends. Glade mentioned that he would know if it as a good ride the next morning. He said if he couldn’t move the next morning, he’d know it had been a good ride. Well I, for one, was proof it was a good ride. Hopefully I’ll be limbered up before the next ride.

We are going to Pinedale, Wyoming, over Human Rights weekend and invite any who are interested to join us. The next weekend, January 23rd, we’ll be supporting the Utah Snowmobile Association on their Poker Run at Strawberry. This will be a fun event and we are definitely looking forward to riding with members in the other clubs. Our Annual Ride will be in Pine, Idaho, February 12-16, 2016. The Hayhurst Bed and Breakfast are gracious hosts and have become good friends with several in our Club. The Lodge is right in the mountains and we ride out right from there. If you’d like to join us, give our President a call and he can give you the details. Otherwise you’ll have to enjoy just reading about it as I report the fun to you. Be safe, dress warm, and watch out for others. Hope to see you on the mountain.
