Reflection #1 This year, I feel that I have grown tremendously as a student and as a writer. When I first signed up for this class, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I signed up anyway because I hoped it would challenge me (which it has) and because I wanted to try something new. This year has been a great learning experience for me, and I'm glad that I decided to take this class. This year, I have learned a lot about journalism and all of the production skills that go with it. Not only have I have become a better writer, but I have learned some new skills, such as the journalistic style of writing, and something as simple as improving my photography skills (which still isn't very good, but definitely better than last semester). I have learned just as much, if not more, this semester as I did first semester, which I think is a good thing for me. Things like having to interview people have made me more aware and my confidence about interviews has grown from last semester till now. I have been challenged by deadlines this year. In most classes, if you don't turn in something in on time, it only effects you, but in newspaper, if you don’t meet a deadline you let down everyone else who was relying on you to get it done. That is something I learned the hard way first semester, but I think I have done a better job in second semester. I know that I am still not perfect about meeting deadlines, but I think that I have definitely improved, because the first semester I didn’t get some of my articles done on time, but this semester , I have gotten all of my articles done on time. Teamwork has played more important role than I thought it would, because everyone is relying on you to get your articles done on time so the paper can be published. I'm pretty easy-going so I think I worked well with others. Although I learned a lot about ethics last semester, I feel I did not truly understand the importance of it until this semester. Although I have never plagiarized, I have realized how hard it can be to not change a quote from an interview to make it fit a story. I haven't done a good job of keeping my opinions out of writing, which is something I have struggled with all year. I know that I have definitely been objective at times, and that is something that I will continue to try and improve next year. I'm a dedicated person in general, so I was definitely dedicated to the paper this year. I was an asset to the staff because, I get my articles done in time. I don't complain if I get assigned an article that I didn't want to do or if I was asked to take pictures, I will go do it, without hesitation. I feel that my commitment to the publication has grown throughout the year, especially since I have learned more about teamwork, deadlines, and dedication. One of the main things that I have learned this year is how the journalistic style of writing differs from the style that I am used too, but I think have I improved that since first semester. This semester, my dedication for this paper has grown a lot. I am extremely excited to be an editor next year and take on that bigger responsibility. I have grown a lot this year, and I hope that I will continue to grow next
year too.
Reflection #2 The article that I have chosen for my second reflection is the con violent video games, which is from the opinion page in the April issue. The reason why I think that this is my most significant piece of written work from this semester is because I think it was well written and I had a lot of good information to backup my opinion. My purpose for writing this article was to oppose a popular viewpoint. There were a few articles that I could have chosen for this section, but I chose this one because I had never written an opinion piece, so I wanted to try it. Also, I am not a fan of video games so, I found it easy to write. When I first got assigned this article, I thought it would be easy because it didn’t need interviews, and I could use opinion, but when I actually started writing it, it was harder than I thought, because I had to provide evidence and clearly state my opinion. It was a fun article to write because I actually got to express my opinion, which was exciting. Another reason why it was easy to write was because I didn't have to get interviews and I was allowed to incorporate my opinion into it. The story didn't change much from the first draft to the final one that got published. The main difference was that the editors changed a lot of grammar and spelling errors in the final draft. There was a lot that I learned about the effect of video games during the writing process. When I first started the article, I didn't know much about it, but after doing research, I learned that video games, especially violent ones, do have a negative effect on people. Since I don’t play many video games, I did not know that much about them. Now that I know these things, it can be fun to talk to people about their opinion on video games. Although this article was opinion, I still had to do research to back up my opinions. I had to look at several websites, to make sure that they all had the same facts and statistics, which they did. It was also one of the quickest and easiest articles to write because I enjoyed writing about my opinion on violent video games. Another reason why I found it enjoyable to write is because I didn't have to do any interviews for it, and my writing tends to be better if I don't have to use quotes in them and I actually got to state my opinion, which I normally struggle with. I am really proud of how the article turned out. I think it was really well written, compared to some of my other articles. I did a good job of providing background information to backup my claims. I also did a good job of clearly stating my opinion. This was the only article (aside from the Cardinals one) I wrote this semester that I didn't have any regrets about the way it turned out. There is nothing that I want to change about it.
First Draft People know that video games can be harmful because of the lack of exercise/social activity and also the addiction. But what most people don't know is that video games, especially violent ones can desensitize a person’s emotions. A person won't necessarily go shoot up a school as a result of video games, but they will have less sympathy and passion towards people and/or events. They also might not realize it, but they can slowly stop seeing the difference in real violence versus video game violence. According to psychologytoday, violent video games can numb a person’s feelings towards guilt. Studies show that the younger a child starts playing violent video games, the less aware he/she becomes towards real life problems. Another example of desensitization that most people don't realize is that video games, violent or not, often cause people to lose motivation towards priorities. Regardless of desensitization, video games are still bad for people no matter what. They can cause people to stay inside and play video games, which can affect their social life. Video games can also be bad for people physically, not just emotionally, because they can worsen eyesight.
Final Draft It’s no secret that many kids and teens are addicted to playing violent video games, but that may be doing more harm than people realize. Although most people are aware that video games can be harmful because of the lack of exercise/ social activity and also the addiction. But what most people don't know is that video games, especially violent ones, can desensitize a person’s emotions. A person will not necessarily go shoot up a school as a result of video games, but they will have less sympathy and compassion towards people and/or events. They also might not realize it, but they can slowly stop seeing the difference in real violence versus video game violence. According to Psychology Today, violent video games can numb a person’s feelings towards guilt and cause them to not react when something terrible does happen. Studies from Psychology Today show that the younger a child starts playing violent video games, the less aware he/she becomes towards real life problems. Another example of desensitization that most people do not realize is that video games, violent or not, often cause people to lose motivation towards priorities. In this case, video games are not different than phones and television. People can easily get hooked on it, causing them to lose motivation to get things done. The stereotype of a lazy kid sitting at home all day playing video games exists for a reason. The more someone plays video games, they become more used to violence. There is absolutely no reason why a seven year old child should be playing violent video games. The truth of the matter is that some people can not go without their Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty, so they keep denying the facts. But the evidence is there, playing video games, can desensitize a person to violence and can numb their emotions. According to Psychcentral.com, research shows that violent video games can increase aggressive thoughts and alter psychological thoughts normally aroused by real life violence. Video games that encourage violence are harmful for someone with a serious mental illness, like depression. It can desensitize that person and lead to actions that may be out of the person’s control. Similarly, a game may contain triggers that could cause a person to hurt themselves or others. Regardless of desensitization, video games are still bad for people no matter what. They can cause people to stay inside and play video games, which can affect their social life and their mental health. Video games can also be bad for people physically, not just emotionally, because, just like all electronics, they can worsen eyesight. Some video games can be educational and beneficial, but violent video games are nothing but detrimental for people.
Reflection #3
The first article I am proud of is the story I wrote about ASU online in the February issue. I chose it because I am proud of the interviews and the information in the article. I thought I did a good job. It was one of my longer articles and I was able to fill the word count without any problems. I also learned a lot about the ASU online school. Another piece I am proud of is when I wrote about the poor iPhone sales in the March issue. It was hard to write because I'm not really a tech person, so I didn't know anything about it. I did a lot of research and learned a lot. I think the article turned out pretty good. The last example of work that I am proud of is the Cardinals story in the March issue. It was by far my favorite article to write because I love sports so it was right up my alley. I had been following the Cardinals all off-season long, so I knew what to write about. Aside from the video game article, it was probably my best piece of work this semester. I hope that next year, I can write more articles about pro sports teams in Arizona.

Snapchat (11.11%) The sales for the newest iPhones including the iPhone X and the iPhone 8 are less than half of what Apple expected to sell. Apple was originally expecting to make Instagram (5.13)50 million screens, but after the first quarter in 2018 of sales, Apple has slowed production None by almost 60 percent, instead (70.09%) only producing 20 million new phones. One of the main reasons why the iPhone X has not been as popular is because of the high price. The X costs almost $1,000, but only costs $370 to make. Many consumers do not think that the phone is worth that steep price. iPhone sales have been so low that there is some speculation that Apple will cease production of this new iPhone as early as June or July of 2018, although Apple has not commented on this matter. If the company stops selling this phone, it will be the first ever iPhone that Apple has pulled before releasing a new model. Apple has been under some bad publicity lately after a new software update allowed the company to slow down older phones, hoping people would upgrade to the 8 or the X. When the public became aware of this, Apple lowered their price of battery replacement from $50 to $29 but still faces a lot of public criticism for doing so. Reports show that slowing down the old batteries, did not help sales with the new iPhones. “I had the iPhone 6 and it kept dying all the time, it was so bad,” said Madison Miller, a junior. Although sales have been down, Apple has still made a huge profit from the iPhone X because of its high price. Sales for the iPhone 8 and 8 plus have also been bad, but not nearly as bad as sales for the iPhone X. There are an estimated 1.3 billion active Apple devices out there, which is up 30 percent in two years.

I think it was time to move on from Bruce Arians. I like the new guy,” said Mark O’Bryan, a math teacher and Cardinals fan. Quarterback Carson Palmer also announced his retirement after this past season, leaving the team Mark O’Bryan a math teacher. with a giant hole for the quarterback position. The Cardinals can either sign a quarterback in free agency or draft one. If they go via the draft, they are expected to elect either Josh Allen out of Wyoming, Josh Rosen from UCLA, or possibly Luke Falk, out of Washington State. There is still speculation that the team may not draft a quarterback, but might just sign one in free agency instead. Many fans are hoping they will sign recent Super Bowl MVP, Nick Foles. “I think we should sign a good quarterback, like Nick Foles or Kirk Cousins,” said Jacob Richardson, a junior.
“I love him. I think it was time to move on from Bruce Arians. I like the new guy.”
CHANGING THE LINEUP Future hall of fame wide receiver, Larry Fitzgerald, announced he will not retire and suit up for a fifteenth season. Even though he signed a contract extension last year, there was still speculation if Fitzgerald would retire or not. The wideout currently sits third on the list for all time receiving yards, and although he won't catch the leader Jerry Rice, him returning for another season means he will likely pass the person in second, Terrell Owens.
IMPROVING DEFENSE The Cardinals are hoping to improve their defense, as well as learn a new system under the new head coach, which has some Arizona sports fans excited. “I like Cardinals because they are fun to watch and I like how they play well as a team,” said Rylee Yarra, a freshman. The Cardinals are looking to bounce back after going 8-8 in 2017. That .500 record was mostly due to injuries to quarterback Carson Palmer, and star running back David Johnson, as well as struggling on special teams.

Breakfast wagon The Wagon Wheel Coffee shop is a small breakfast place located in Cave Creek. This diner is open every day from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wagon Wheel is a throwback to the classic old diners, but do note that they only take cash. “Its a cute place to eat, it is small and cozy. I love the feel of the place,” said Olivia Graeber, a sophomore. It is a casual restaurant, with meals costing about $10-20. “I love going to the restaurant because their food is really good and I like that it is local,” said Michelle Satran, a freshman. Since Wagon Wheel has been open, it has served as a popular breakfast place for many people. This is also a popular spot for locals and even students around Cave Creek. “The Wagon Wheel used to be the hangout for Cactus Shadows students. They had a back room and it would be filled every morning before school,” said Elissa Ericson, dance teacher.

The restaurant does not accept credit cards, they do not cater, and they do not have wifi services. Those factors may be a downside to people, however, there are some who enjoy the old feel of the restaurant and this may even enhance the experience of the diner. “Some people may not like how old it is, but I love it. It's got a great atmosphere and the food is really good too,” said Graeber. The Wagon Wheel may look like a small building on the side of the road, but it has much to offer in terms of food. The restaurant is best known for its biscuits and gravy, as well as its omelets. They also offer specialty pancakes and french toast that are large in portions. “Their menu never changes, so that way I can always order my favorite breakfast every time I go there,” said Satran.
