This semester

This year my life has been a lot different I took on a lot more responsibilities. I now have a job I work at four to five days a week, and I played shows with my band every weekend for two months straight. I knew I’d be busier this year so I took the smaller roll as food editor so I would not also be slammed with school. In my time in newspaper I have learned so much about how important deadlines are. If you do not turn your stuff in you not only put yourself behind but put everyone behind. Being on time is important, most people should look at Newspaper as a job. We have gotten so many awards throughout the years because we produce a quality paper. We don’t just magically get these awards because we have the smartest kids, we get these awards because we have teachers like Mrs. Hart and Mr. Adamson who put their personal time into this paper. That is where team work comes in. If everyone is not helping each other out the paper does not come together in the end. I believe team work is very important to the editors because this is our second year together, but sometimes editors do not get a long with staffers. I think this would be a great thing to work on for next semester. Something that is always important is telling the truth in a newspaper. If there is anything untrue in the newspaper it makes our paper unreliable as a news source. When working on a paper like this you want to get the news out you do not want fake news anywhere. Dedication is very important to keep winning awards. I think my dedication slipped since last year because of more responsibilities I put first, but this next semester I plan to be better with my dedication and with deadlines. I did show up to all the production days and handout days and I never turned anything in late so I do not feel I dragged the class down in any way but I could’ve been more productive. My biggest problem this semester was getting everything done in my life and at school. My band started reaching more people and we were playing a show sometimes multiple a weekend. We finally had to take a little break to focus on other things but it was a lot on me at the time. This is just life and if these problems arise again I will just have to face them because these our decisions that form how my life will be. I believe my biggest weakness is my writing because I like to write everything and not pay attention to the punctuation. Next semester I plan to really read over my work and give it my all.

Most significant piece

My most significant piece of work this semester was the article I wrote on kids preparing for college. The purpose of this article was to inform kids about scholarships and gave some insight to what other kids are doing. At first I regretted picking that article because I thought it would be hard to write, but I later found out it was actually quite interesting. I learned a lot, for example theres scholarships for everything including just for being left handed. I thought that was a really cool fact. The first draft was a lot different then the final draft. The first draft was filled with edits I needed to change. Most the edits were things that were my fault like grammatical errors but no changes to the content of the article. I gained a lot of knowledge through writing this article I interviewed some of the top seniors in my class, because I knew they were going to college. They all gave me great answers and it was super easy getting the quotes to fit in with the article. My favorite part about this article is that though it aims at seniors, everyone can read it and gain knowledge. This is my favorite article I have written in the two years I’ve been in newspaper and it was one that felt very important to write and I think that’s why I enjoyed it so much. Because I am an editor now I don’t write many articles to compete with this one, but the fact that I liked this one over all the articles I’ve written in two years is pretty crazy.

Pumpkin is without a doubt the trademark flavor every fall. these maple pumpkin pancakes are perfect for those who would like to try fall-themed breakfast. They are a step up from regular pancakes, but simple enough to be made by anyone. The main ingredient, pumpkin, yields many nutritional benefits, including a high amount of vitamin A, antioxidants, and both fiber and potassium, which are good for heart health. Steps: Whisk all dry ingredients together except pecans in one bowl and all wet ingredients together in a separate bowl. Combine the wet and dry ingredients and whisk until almost completely blended. Heat a pan at medium heat and spread butter evenly, and with a ladle, scoop batter into small circles onto the pan. Wait 1-2 minutes or until golden brown, flip, and repeat. Top with maple syrup topped pecans, and a dash of cinnamon if desired.

With the recent excitement around the new Popeye’s chicken sandwich, students have been debating whether the chicken sandwich from Popeyes or Chick-fil-A is better. After a social media outburst from the debut of the Popeyes chicken sandwich, there have been many reviews comparing the two sandwiches and people are arguing over which one is better. Although they may look or seem similar, the ingredients used in each sandwich differ from each other. At Popeyes, the ingredients in chicken sandwich include the chicken breast fillet marinated in Popeyes signature spices, topped with spicy mayonnaise and pickles served on a brioche bun. The competing Chick-fil-A classic sandwich includes a boneless chicken breast, seasoned and pressure cooked in peanut oil, served on a toasted, butter bun with dill pickle chips. Both Popeyes and Chick-

reasons include that the sandwich from Popeyes is too crunchy and has almost too many spices. So, people are concluding that the classic chicken sandwich from Chick-fil-A is the perfect combination of ingredients and still has a spicy taste to it. After trying both the Popeyes and Chick-fil-A sandwich, I decided that the classic chicken sandwich from Chick-fil-A remains the best sandwich. Both are very good combinations of flavors. However, I think the Popeyes sandwich is a little too crunchy and spicy. Also, the Chick-fil-A classic sandwich is set at a much cheaper price than the sandwich from Popeyes. Both companies are still receiving a lot of attention just from these two sandwiches and will continue to skyrocket in their earnings in the next few months. The debate between the Popeyes spicy chicken sandwich and the Chickfil-A classic sandwich will live on for now.

fil-A have been receiving a lot more attention over the past few months because of this new food trend. Many people have gone out and tried both sandwiches in the same day to make their decision on which one they like the best. There are now over thousands of reviews online regarding each sandwich, comparing the tastes of each sandwich. Many reviews are giving praise to both sandwiches and recommending that others should try both. However, others gave their opinions on which is the clear winner in the sandwich debate. Many have said that the Popeyes chicken sandwich is clearly the better sandwich after trying both. They report that the spices added with Popeye’s sandwich makes the biggest difference in deciding if it is better than the original sandwich from Chick-fil-A. However, some are saying that the classic chicken sandwich from Chick-fil-A is still the best chicken sandwich out there. The

HE EFFECTS OF eat-

ing before bed has been a “hot topic in nutrition,” according to Healthline. Some say eating before bed has negative effects, others do not think it has any effect. “I try not to eat right before bed, I try to finish my last meal three hours before I go to sleep.” said Stacey Kairis, a P.E. teacher. Eating dinner a couple of hours before sleeping is a beneficial tactic to slow down weight gain. According to Sleep Advisor, “You must eat your last meal of the day at least 2-4 hours before going to bed.” The reason behind this is because, during sleep, the digestive system slows down. “I think for some people, eating before bed results in weight gain. I don’t believe

it has ever affected my sleep quality. It has possibly had an impact on my weight gain, but I wouldn’t pinpoint it on that.” said Kairis. According to Healthline, “It turns out that people who eat before bed are more likely to gain weight simply because a bedtime snack is an extra meal and, therefore, extra calories.” “I always eat before bed, typically junk food and snacks, like cereal, cookies, or chips,” said Lainey Layman, a sophomore. The urge to snack late at night is typically due to not eating enough during the day. Healthline states “Some people also become extremely hungry before bed because they don’t eat enough during the day.” “I think eating a full dinner before bed helps me sleep better because then I feel full,” said Natakia Staryk-mills, a sophomore.

Having a snack before bed can prevent hunger during sleep. According to Healthline, “It’s perfectly fine for most people to have a healthy snack before bed.” Eating something small before sleeping also improves sleep quality. “Usually, I eat two full meals, I’ll eat lunch and dinner, and occasionally, I will have a snack, or a protein shake after I’ve worked out,” said Kairis. Eating three or more meals a day is a beneficial way to cut down on unhealthy snacking and essentially stop weight gain. According to Harvard Health Publishing, “...eatTHE CACTUS SHADOWS PRESS ing at least three times per day can keep you full and reduce hunger.” Eating Three hearty meals does not allow much room for BREAKFAST RECIPE hunger, therefore cutting down on unhealthy snacking.

For those who want to make a healthy breakfast and would like to try to cook something new, a garlic cilantro bagel is a simple, yet unique recipe to try. Eggs are a go-to choice for breakfast and are also a highly beneficial food to eat in the morning. Eggs contain choline, a nutrient necessary for brain function, are nutrient-dense, and are highly satiating. They are also a source of high-quality protein which helps lower blood pressure and increases muscle mass. Starting the day with carbohydrates, like in bagels is also is a great way to give your energy throughout the day because the body stores carbohydrates as glucose, which gives energy to the cells in your body. Ingredients: 3 eggs 2 tbsp of milk 1 clove of garlic, peeled and minced ⅛ a cup of cilantro Salt and black pepper to preference 1 tbsp of butter Plain or poppy seed bagel A handful of feta cheese crumbles Thinly sliced avocado 1 Whisk together eggs, milk, and salt in a bowl until smooth 2 Melt butter in a pan at medium-low heat until completely melted, add in minced garlic and saute for 1 minute 3 Pour in eggs and cook at medium-low heat, stirring constantly, add cilantro and feta about a minute into cooking 4 Mix eggs until solid, but still slightly creamy 5 Toast a bagel to the desired amount, add eggs to bagel, add avocado slices, and top with black pepper.

Fast and easy breakfast, brain fuel for the day ahead Quick ways to eat breakfast and still be on time. Zach Valentine staff writer

Multiple teachers and students are rushed out of the house without eating breakfast. Fast and easy breakfast is a way to help fit breakfast into their busy mornings. “I eat breakfast every day. I will have a protein shake, eggs or oatmeal,” said Gaetano Gianni, Health teacher. People who skip breakfast tend to gain more weight. Recent Harvard studies have shown that breakfast stimulates the brain, and stable glucose levels can help the ability to focus. The same studies also show that over 31 million Americans skip breakfast every day. About 10% of the U.S. population does not eat breakfast. One reason people are not eating breakfast is because they are not hungry. Females are more likely than males to skip a morning meal because of being busy, or being late. “Sometimes, I am in a hurry and I can’t eat breakfast, but I usually try to be ready on time for school so I can eat in the morning,” said Jayden Bahoura, a sophomore. There are multiple apps and websites people use for recipes because they can not cook without knowing what to do step by step. For example, the website allrecipies.com has over 50 easy recipes with a step by step process on how to make them. They have toast recipes, egg recipes, breakfast sandwiches, and many more. Researchers from Future Fit Training have studies that show that students and employees perform better when they have had breakfast. New York Times did a study that shows eating breakfast prevents mood swings and irritability associated with midmorning hunger. “If I am rushing to get out of the house in the morning, I normally only eat a pop tart, but if I do have time in the morning I will make eggs, bacon and toast,” said AJ Stenger, a sophomore. Greek yogurt is a very healthy, easy and fast thing to eat in the morning. It is rich in calcium and contains probiotics that support a healthy digestive system. Another piece of advice on being quicker in the morning is to make something the night before, freeze it, thaw it out, and then eat it in the morning. Many nutritionists say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but many people take advantage of that fact. Over 50,000 people in the US consume a McDonalds breakfast every month. That’s including coffee, egg mcmuffin, hash browns, and all their other unhealthy breakfast choices. Proven by many nutritionists breakfast is the most important meal of the day.. On average a person should be consuming 300 to 400 calories every morning.

Keeping healthy habits during the holiday with these easy tips Kolton O’Connor staff writer

Eating healthy during the holidays is getting easier this year due to all of the healthy options available for students. “I try and eat healthy during the holidays so that I look good, even though it’s tough because of all the junk food available,” said Jayden Bahoura, a sophomore. During the holidays, the temptation to eat junk food is much higher due to foods such as Christmas cookies, and other seasonal treats. Mental toughness is the key to staying strong and eating healthy. “My favorite healthy snacks are apples, bananas, and salads. I like apples because you can put honey on them and stuff like that,” said Bahoura There have been a lot of brands releasing healthy alternatives of their products. they also use substitutes for sugar and versions using whole grain “For desserts, the sweetener substitutes are really good because they don’t have any sugar, Also if you get whole grain stuff it tastes pretty much the same and it's better for you,'' said Ben Sheps, a cross fit athlete. “Eating healthy now helps me stay in shape and have good eating habits for when football season starts again,” said

Bahoura. Eating healthy is always a good option for athletes trying to stay in shape and get stronger. It is crucial for an athlete's body to have the proper nutrition. Even if you’re not an athlete eating healthy is very important for their lives, especially as a teenager because their bodies is developing and growing right now. “I think it’s harder to eat healthy during the holidays because the holidays are all so based on eating, which makes it difficult,” said Andrew Cupo, a drama teacher. The holidays all include big meals, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas or Christmas Eve dinner. When surrounded by junk food, eating healthy can definitely be a challenge. There are many alternatives that can replace the unhealthy holiday foods. There are many different types of alternatives. For example Doritos has reduced fat and whole grain versions of their chips. Kelloggs also has whole grain versions of there Rice Krispies treats. Other alternatives include using flavorless greek yogurt in place of sour cream as well as coconut butter instead of regular butter.

Avocado Toast is a simple dish, containing minimal ingredients. In recent years, it has become a very popular menu item for many breakfast and lunch restaurants. Not only is it healthy, but it is also very easy to prepare. For this smackdown, I went to two highly recommended avocado toast places in Scottsdale. First, I went to MoJo Cafe at Grayhawk Golf Club, then, I went to Wow Wow Lemonade. At Mojo, the avocado toast came with sour dough, mashed avocado and corn. Although I liked it overall, the corn tasted a little weird and gave the dish an odd consistency. When I went to Wow Wow Lemonade, the avocado toast was served on whole grain bread, with smashed avocado, chili flakes, and a hint of lime. All of the different flavors came together beautifully and the toast was really good. They also offered a wider variety of avocado toast, there were multiple with different toppings, as opposed to MoJo, who only had one option. The atmosphere at both places was very nice, yet they were very different. At MoJo, I sat outdoors and the patio area was really nice. However, when I went to Wow Wow Lemonade, I got a really artsy feel from the place. It almost felt like a restaurant on the beach.

Although I enjoyed both places, my favorite had to be Wow Wow Lemonade. Between the taste of the food and the atmosphere, it was a win win. MoJo Cafe does have its perks, like being on a golf course, and having an outdoor seating area, but Mojo Cafe did not have the best avocado toast in the world. It could probably be made better without the corn, because the bread itself was really good. Both places were very good, but Wow Wow Lemonade definitely won the Avocado Toast Smackdown. They had everything that someone who is looking for a great breakfast or lunch is looking for.

Devin Dorough food editor A trend that has started to take off this past couple of years is thrift shopping. Clothes and accessories are a big thing to help us stand out and express ourselves. Thrift shopping is a fun way people can get more clothing for your style, and stay in a low budget. In Cave Creek, there are many local thrift shops. The three most popular are Kiwanis Market Place, Gold Mine Thrift Shop, and Infinite Finds. All these locations are considerably cheaper and have great finds from clothing, to art, to everyday necessities. Kiwanis Market Place is located in Old Town Cave Creek. Kiwanis’ goal is to enrich the education of the students in their community and they do this by sponsoring smaller projects such as the Boy Scouts and Desert Foothills Key Club. A lot of the money they make at this thrift store goes to these organizations or to Kiwanis to keep expanding. Kiwanis is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9:00 to 4:00 They’re ready to greet and help you find the next great find. Inside Kiwanis it was a smaller sized thrift store. It has a lot of home materials such as things to cook with, and smaller appliances, and also furniture and decorations. The clothing section is pretty big for the women but the men’s section doesn’t have a lot to choose from. Gold Mine thrift shop is another thrift shop located in Old Town Cave Creek. This one is a little bit smaller in size than Kiwanis, but still has a good collection of stuff. Gold Mine is open 9-3 on Wednesday through Saturday and states on their website, they want to provide a service and physical merchandise to those in need. It is run through volunteers. Volunteers that have been serving since the 80’s are still there. The shop originated from the Good Shepherd of the Hills church in 1947. In the middle of the community it served to help people with physical and spiritual needs. It’s open all year around except for August which is when they do cleaning and repairs. Compared to Kiwanis this is a very small thrift store. It had all the same things but a lot less options. There is also not much you can find in there that really catches the eye, or that is considered a good thrift. Infinite Finds is another thrift store in Cave Creek that is a lot newer than its other competitors as it opened in 2017. The company’s owner, Melissa Bates, formed Infinite Finds through her love of healthcare and her old job as a senior placement agent at (where she worked before). On the website it states that Bates wants people to find their next great find and make them as happy as it made the previous owner. Infinite Finds also does things for the community such as giving free wigs to women who have lost hair due to cancer. They also sell body lotions and oils that have health benefits such as CBD oils. Infinite finds is more of a women based store but there was good stuff in there that many could benefit off of. Another cool thing about infinite finds is they sell things for staying healthy. These thrift stores are great to check out if you’re looking to buy some new clothes. They are a great way to save money and give back to the community in one go.

A big issue with scholarships is kids get discouraged and thinking it is a waste of time to do the work just to get rejected. The application process can be a lot, with many steps being involved. Usually an application has to be filled out, an essay must be written, information about the individual must be provided, as well as recommendations and resumes. Scholarships also have deadlines so students have to get it done in a certain amount of time. “Honestly just stay on top of it because deadlines always come sooner than you expect and then you get overwhelmed with what you still need to do,” said Elizabet Cave, a Kiwanis scholarship applicant. Scholarships are important, especially if someone does not want to deal with student debt. There are a lot of opportunities for all kinds of students that you can learn about through research.
