About being an Editor
It was a tough start to the year and I wasn’t able to get the full learning experience that previous editors did, however there is still a decent amount of information that I have obtained through the course of the first semester. I learned how to somewhat use indesign, which is a very difficult platform to learn on, but with the help of other editors and Cooper, I was able to understand how to create my page, use the correct fonts, cut out pictures and place them, as well as the proper formatting for my page. Being an editor is much different than being a writer. As a writer, there are ‘chill’ days that don’t require too much work, however as an editor, there isn’t much of a break. There is always something to work on or be doing, for example creating our pages during production week. There is also quite a bit of responsibility when it comes to being an editor. It is important to check up on stories and where writers are at with them as well as make sure any questions about the story are answered. Editing stories is also a huge part of being an editor, as many staff writers (especially the new ones) aren’t fully aware of the proper writing format. I find the most difficult part of editing stories to be correcting large amounts of text without actually correcting it. As an editor, we aren’t supposed to directly rewrite the stories, therefore it makes it difficult at times to hold back from just changing the story yourself, but instead teaching the writers what’s right and wrong and how to improve their writing. As far as the most common mistakes go, I would say that the formatting of the stories is the difficult part for most writers to understand, as well as using ‘I’ in stories that aren’t for the opinion page. I think continuing to review the proper order and format will help, however a big factor is the amount of time in the class. When I first started writing, I wasn’t nearly as good at writing as I am now, so I think that the longer the writers take Newspaper, the better their writing and formatting will be.
Design
I am most proud of my November issue, as it included text wrap and was overall a clean looking page. It was only my second time using indesign at this point, and I feel like the turn out of the page was quite decent considering my lack of experience. I was able to wrap text around two laptops for my article as well as included a well-done photo of the new iPhone 13. It came out clean and was pretty decent, however it is still not quite what I want my pages to look like, but that will come with time and experience. My least favorite page would be my September issue, however it wasn’t even a bad page, it just wasn’t as good as my September page. I am not the best indesign user, however I do quite well with my picture and text placement and feel like it will only continue to get better as time goes on. I could use a lot of training on the specific tools, such as how to use them and what to use them for. Indesign is a very large platform, and it is very difficult to obtain all of the information in a class or two. As I continue to edit and get help from fellow editors, I am able to obtain the information much easier. I have learned a decent amount about indesign, but memorizing it all is the real challenge. I have learned how to paste photos properly and change the size of them properly, how to use the correct fonts and when to use them, and all of the other page modification tools. I would like more training on how to do the ‘cool’ things, like cutting out images, how to get creative, and how to add more detail to my page.
Writing
My most proud piece of writing is my con article on stimulus checks. This is due to the facts and research that went into the article as well as the format and writing style I used. I feel like I made my point without being overly aggressive on the subject. I made sure to back up my claims with factual evidence and kept the writing in a professional manner. The writing wasn’t too difficult to complete as I didn’t need any interviews and was just able to give my thoughts on the subject. As far as changes from the original writing, there weren’t many made besides taking out a portion that some could find offensive as we like to avoid those things in the paper. Other than that, little to no edits were made from the original, which is also why I feel like the work was done properly. I t took quite a bit of research for this topic as it is a very relevant topic that can be quite controversial, therefore I needed facts to back up my statements. This wasn’t too difficult of a process and the biggest thing that I learned was to stay away from potentially offensive statements. The picture used for the page with the text wrap and the entire article put together with the page turned out great. I made solid points and used factual evidence to back them up, which is why I feel like it was my best piece of work as far as writing.
Leading
I truthfully don’t feel like I’ve done enough to make the staff members feel apart of the team. I try to ask them about the stories and how they’re going, however I feel like I should try to help them with stories and answer any questions that they may have regarding their stories or the paper in general. It is something that I will work on and improve on for next semester for sure. There aren’t too many challenges when it comes to working with other editors, and besides the occasional headbutt with some, there are typically no problems. I mainly stick around Philip, Max, Paul, and Owen and we all get along well so there aren’t any issues. When it comes to being an editor, I would much rather people respect me rather than just being ‘popular’. I strongly dislike the idea of ‘popularity’ and think it’s extremely unimportant. I would rather people respect me and want to help me succeed, as it builds a better and stronger connection with the team and allows me to provide the leadership role that I’ve been given. Being a leader has its ups and downs, but for the most part it is an enjoyable experience and I’m glad that I was able to receive one of those roles. I feel like it is sometimes difficult to get writers or other editors to get done what I need for my page, and I don’t feel like there is as much respect for the editors as there used to be, however I’m hoping that things improve next semester. In order to create an award-winning publication, it takes dedication and responsibility. By this, I mean that stories should be done on time, if not earlier, as well as editors should make sure the stories are properly edited and ready to go on their page. By production day, all stories should be complete and ready to go as well as page outlines. Production day shouldn’t be the final deadline, but instead should be a week before. I feel like enforcing this is important for the new staff writers, because it will teach them the expected rules for the future. We do well on the opinion page, as well as a majority of the other pages, however we lack in writing skill. It will take time for the new writers to get the technique down, however that’s where the editors should pick up and show them how to write correctly, which most don’t do.
Wolf-PacK
Being the leader of the pack requires the most responsibility, which is why the leader travels at the back of the pack. It is the most risky and requires a leadership role that many of the others are too afraid to take up. It is the leader’s job to hold the pack together and prevent any attacks or issues. The front wolf is facing forward, therefore it can see in front of itself and look for any potential threats. The leader is in the back however, and is still facing forward, which leaves his back turned to any danger or threats. The leader must stay aware of its surroundings, and be ready for anything. If anything were to happen, then the leader would be taken out first as he is the last one in the group, however without the leader, the rest of the pack would fall apart. This shows that the leader is necessary to keep the pack together, and without him, the pack can’t survive.
An easy way to remove the old parking passes off of any windshield: Before actually removing the sticker there are some items that are necessary to have before starting. Walmart, Target, and Ace Hardware offer razor blade scrapers that can range from $5 to $15. Any kind of window cleaner such as invisible glass is needed as well. That can be found also at Walmart and Ace Hardware for about $4. It is suggested to use a microfiber cloth instead of a regular towel to prevent scratching the windshield. Those can be found at Walmart for around $10. Once all of the materials are gathered, begin the removal process. Carefully push the scraper under the

Ripping the sticker will take longer to remove and is more likely to leave behind copious amounts of residue. The removal process should only take about 2 minutes if it is carefully executed. Make sure to move the blade flat with the curve of the windshield. Once the sticker is removed spray on the window cleaner and let it sit. After a couple seconds, wipe the sticker residue off with a towel. If the residue still remains, repeat the previous step until the window is completely clean.

Should college tuition be free?
THE CSPRESS
THE IDEA OF free college in today’s society is something that is looked upon very carefully and definitely should be something to be considered. Everyone has their own paths to school and college is one thing that some students and families simply can’t afford which is why it should be free for everyone. America is made of a very diverse type of society where everyone pursues different passions. Eliminating tuition for all students takes a huge load off their backs and could provide lots of opportunities to those who may not have had them previously. Of course, not everyone agrees with college being free for a variety of reasons. In fact, more opportunities would be presented to everyone. By negating the large bill of a college education, we could see an increase in the number of students able to attend college. This creates a well-educated workforce and a population that has better critical thinking skills. If this were to happen, it could lead to innovation in all areas of society. Free college doesn’t mean no money spent at all. The only thing free about the college would be the tuition being paid, which still is a lot of money. Housing, textbooks, food, classes, etc. still has to be paid for. In addition, one of the main pros of making college free is for those still paying off their student debt from however many years ago they attended school. According to Ellen Anderson, author and writer for collegeraptor. com, without the weight of student 4 Johnny Geare loan debt, more college graduates might be able to purchase houses rather than renting apartments. free for students or not. Despite the fact that college is expensive and many students end up in debt, it would be foolish to make it free for everyone. The modern era is full of the ideology that things should be free in life with a closed mind on the negative side effects. College tuition is looked at as one of the largest costs for students and parents, and it is very expensive. In reality, it is only a fraction of the cost that the rest of college living requires. Housing, food, textbooks and other expenses are far more costly than tuition itself. Books alone are thousands of dollars per year and there’s no way to alter the pricing on it. With tuition, colleges have a plethora of scholarships to offer students that can chip away at the cost. Full rides are offered to students who perform well academically as well as those who offer high athletic skills and abilities. Smaller scholarships can still range from $5,000 to $20,000 per year depending on what the student has to offer. An article written by SavingforCollege.com, an independent resource for parents and financial professionals, states that colleges supply more than 1.7 million scholarships per year, totaling over $7.4 billion. There are many other scholarships for smaller achievements that can offer huge amounts of money saved per year/semester. Colleges make paying for college much easier with scholarship opportunities that are given out like never before. Students can work hard early to prevent the overwhelming student debts that come from college. With student debts however, it is very flexible on payment times, as students don’t have to start making payments right after they graduate and are given a large amount of time to make those payments. There is time for students to grow their income and chip away at their debt as they get older. Student debt is also a great way to help students understand financial decisions and skills that are needed in life. STYLE THE CSPRESS One of the most imporimpor Jaden Lea tant cons that people are forfor getting when thinking about free tuition is the large tax increase that will come from it. An article done by stuProCon.com, a non-biased information source for stu dents, states that a free college tuition plan would cost roughly $47 billion per year. Money doesn’t grow on trees and the government has other things to spend money on, therefore the cost of college tuition would be taken out of taxes. comThis would jump the price of taxes to an absurd amount that would also get com plained about. Nothing is ever given for free, and it has to come from somewhere, which many people fail to understand. College tuition has had the same setup for difyears, so altering it would just cause a whole new system that would be dif ficult and unnecessary. When comparing the list of pros to cons for free college tuition, it is clear that tuition should not be free and the system should continue to stay the same. There are no true benefits to free college that won’t take a toll on other aspects of expenses. Cait Bunkers Editor With the modern era and theSports variety of opportunities set up for students, there is no reason to make college free strictly because people don’t feel like paying for it.

Food shortages cause menu changes in restaurants Jaden Lea Tech Editor

chains around the U.S have struggled with shortages in food over the recent months. The food industry is a high demand market, and requires large shipments of product to specific locations by a certain deadline. If not met, it can cause issues within restaurants and other small food businesses. One of the largest suggested reasons for this shortage is due to the covid-19 pandemic, which
caused a lockdown worldwide, and slowed production of many valuable items. With the economy back up and running, there is still ground to make up for the time that was missed, and it’s starting to catch up. “The restaurant I work at has had food shortages over the past few months, and it has been frustrating to lack the proper resources to keep the business running,” said Erin Heileger, a junior, who works at Keelers restaurant. The lack of food and shipments has caused replacement items to come into the picture. Separate shopping outside of work at a
grocery store is one of the most common ways to help cope with this shortage, however it is costing more money when items aren’t being bought in bulk. “I have had to run to the store multiple times during work to go purchase food items that we were in need of,” said Tyson Deters, a food expo at All American Modern Sports Grill. Things such as condiments, vegetables, and ice cream are amongst the many different items that employees are sent out to purchase for the restaurant. This problem hasn’t shown much sign
of improvement, but with the economy returning to its prepandemic ways, it should start to become less of a problem over the upcoming months. Many restaurants have increased pricing on items with low inventory to help make up for the lost cost. Pricing is skyrocketing as shipments continue to take longer than expected to arrive and business continues to strive. With the pandemic being passed, people are returning to their old habits of going out to eat, which is causing food to decrease in inventory quickly.
“I typically eat out with my parents as often as I can on the weekends,” said Jayden Bahora, a senior. Restaurants count on specific food items to be delivered, and when there is a different number of those items than expected, it can cause mayhem within the establishment. It is unsure when this problem will truly be resolved, but in the meantime, employees and restaurants have learned ways to cope with this issue and plan to continue to do so until the food is no longer in a shortage.

Lingerie NO becoming a popular fashion choice
Wearing lingerie as an everyday piece has become more common recently over a short period of time. According to The Madame Blue, wearing underwear as outerwear came out in the 1660s, when Catherine de Medici introduced corsets to the French court as a women’s fashion essential, meant to be seen. The trend surged in the 70s when Vivienne Westwood put a modern twist on the style, and was later followed by Madonna’s Jean Paul Gaultier-designed corset and cone bra combos during her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour. More recently, the trend has made a resurgence during the pandemic as loungewear has become more socially acceptable to wear in public. Lingerie tops such as lacy bras and corsets provide much more flexibility than bottoms do, as they provide more coverage than bottoms. “You should definitely pair it with a bunch of accessories or you will be overexposed,” said Bella Price, a junior. To incorporate lingerie into an everyday outfit, one could wear a lacy bra under a blazer or partially unbuttoned top and pants. Another pairing that provides more coverage is a corset over a short sleeved blouse. For a more subtle yet noticeable pop, wear a lacy bra under a shirt with a wide neckline. Pairing a garter with shorts or a miniskirt is a creative way to wear it as bottoms. Because lingerie is limited in bottoms, fishnets under bottoms are another way to incorporate the style. “A top over a top… or with fishnets. I also just really like layering,” said Brooklyn Wilcox, a senior. It is important to mix the right colors together in order to create the perfect look. Were stimulus checks the solution or the problem? Unemployment benefits have long been an important part of our financial system, helping citizens stay afloat and support their families in the United States’ unsure economy. During COVID-19, this support was critical. According to Fortune Magazine, in the first two months of the pandemic, more than 22 million workers lost their jobs. The stimulus checks helped millions of Americans stay afloat during an unprecedented national disaster. While the news media focused on the cons of providing “free” money to people who may not need it, according to the United States Census Bureau, about 80 percent of citizens who received a check reported using it on food, and 77.9 percent on rent, mortgage and/or utilities, including gas, electricity, cable, internet and cellphone, and more than half of respondents reported spending stimulus payments on household supplies and personal care products. The media has also publicized the idea that people are not returning to work because unemployment is paying more than actual jobs. While it is true that many businesses are struggling to find workers, there are many reasons people are not returning to work. The USA Today reported that economists disagree about whether the extra assistance was hold in back job searches. “What’s clearer is that some workers, particularly those who earn low wages, are being more selective about where they work. They’re determined to find better paying, more fulfilling jobs than the ones they left or lost during the pandemic.” Another common complaint is that the government provided too many stimulus checks, saying that unemployment benefits are meant to be short term. But COVID19 changed everything, creating greater need. The pandemic was both unexpected and deadly. The stimulus checks were necessary to keep American families on their feet. It was a short term solution to get us through the most difficult times. Unemployment benefits will always be a part of the economy. We need a safety net, without one for the American people, the economy has too great of an opportunity to fall.

There are many negative effects caused by this social motivational downturn, one of which is a worker shortage across the nation. Different businesses, restaurants, and other franchises struggle immensely with a lack of workers due to the damage that the pandemic has caused. According to the New York Time, a recent U.S. Chamber of Commerce poll showed that “nearly half of small businesses say it is hard to find candidates with the skills they need.” Many of these businesses are forced to raise wages to extreme amounts just to get employees who are willing to work. This takes away from the hardworking individuals who are already working and receive normal pay. Businesses are no longer in fear of being closed from the pandemic, but rather fear failure due to a low amount of employees. Unemployment checks are not meant to last forever, they are designed to keep people on their feet during a rough time. In an article done by Premier Staffing (a website focused on employment), they found that unemployment checks are usually only supplied for up to 26 weeks, depending on the state. While providing assistance to people during a global pandemic was a good idea in the short term, it was extended far too long. The lack of motivation to return to work was costly and, at least at the end, unnecessary. Now that the stimulus checks have ended, people will be forced to go out and find a job.

Arizonans are flocking to Flagstaff for the spectacular snowboarding season past the icy steeps”, said Shea Hart, a senior who snowboards. Snowbowl is located seven miles north of Flagstaff. The Snowbowl ski area covers approximately one percent of the San Francisco Peaks and its slopes face west and northwest. According to the Official Tourism site of Flagstaff Arizona, the Snowbowl has a 777 acre piece of land that gets roughly 108 inches of snow per year. “I love being up there when it is snowing. It makes my experience better every time. It is crazy to me how much snow a mountain can get in a single season,” said Andrew Barab Shedd, an avid snowboarder. It has been a hotspot for snowboarders for many years, and it shows as the prices of sea-
son passes continue to grow. The starting price of season passes is $450. They can increase all the way up to $700 depending on what one decides to include in their package. The season passes allow the buyer to go as many times as they want per season. An important thing to know about the passes is that the buyer only needs to go seven times in order to make their money back. Rentals and a day pass average out to around $100 for one day, which is why many choose to buy the season pass instead. “Since I go to NAU, I am always at the Snowbowl. I buy the pass instead of buying a pass everytime I go up because it makes sense for me to. I have recently bought my
own gear so I don’t have to waste money on renting,” said Caleb Payne, an avid snowboarder. The prices of tickets depend on the day of the week. Tickets on the weekends are almost double of what the weekday prices are. Prices range from $45 to $99. The Snowbowl can be very expensive, but the price depends on what items are bought. The first week of Snowbowl has been delayed this year, due to a lack of snow, even with the use of the snow machines. This has upset many riders, however it is scheduled to be open for the second week.

There are some special features in Flagstaff, including a college, thrift stores, along with a handful of famous restaurants and hotels. Northern Arizona University has 95 undergraduate programmes and 76 graduate programmes. Student life is often described as calm. The school has fraternities and sororities but it is still not classified as a party school. “I know a few people that go to NAU and they enjoy it because it is very calm compared to ASU and U of A,” said Peyton Turnwall, a junior. Downtown Flagstaff is covered in bars and sit down restaurants because of the traffic that comes through there. Major highways run through the center of Flagstaff causing the town to get a lot of out of town traffic. Interstate 40 runs through Flagstaff which is the main road that people travel on when driving through Arizona from northern states. Interstate 17 also leads to Flagstaff. It runs from Central Phoenix all the way to Flagstaff. Flagstaff gets a lot of tourism all throughout the year which is why it has turned into a tourism town like Sedona.

‘but the change is so small it is hardly noticeable. Battery life lasts all day with an average of 5 hours of screen time. Apple markets the phone as having a huge leap in battery life and I can definitely confirm that it does. I charge my phone at night and do not have to worry about charging it again until I am going to sleep. The camera obviously upgrades every year, but this year it feels significantly better. The wide angle lens is a lot clearer and can get way closer to objects while staying in focus. The new Cinematic mode is a cool new feature, but for me it is mainly a party trick. The zoom goes up to 15x and is super clear because the camera actually zooms that much instead of artificially zooming like SnapChat. Overall, I think this year’s iPhone is a very good upgrade and I would definitely recommend it to people with iPhones that are more than two years old.

AMSUNG AND APPLE both have created laptops with a variety of features and customizations to win over customers, but it is wondered how different they really are. Though Samsung isn’t as well known for laptops as Apple is, their laptops are surprising. Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 is the Samsung equivalent to the Apple MacBook Pro. Samsung’s Galaxy Book Pro 360 13.3 inch AMOLED display laptop starts at $1199.99 while Apple’s 13 inch Retina MacBook Pro starts at $1299. The 15 inch Samsung starts at $1499 and Apple’s at a staggering $2399. Being a laptop, they need to be thin and lightweight, This is where Samsung wins. Book pro 360 13 inch is 2.29 pounds and the macbook pro 13 inch is 3 pounds. The 15 inch 360 is 3.06 pounds and the 16 inch macbook is 4.3 pounds. This is important if someone carries their laptop in their backpack. Both are very capable of traveling with leightweight and thin dimensions. It’s well known that Apple’s touchpad has always been the best, as well as their touchbar which acts like a shortcut screen. “You can put a pet dog on the touchbar,” says Zane Kloss, a sophomore. Apple allows for customizations and ways to make its computer more unique to the user. drawApple does not come with a pen or draw ing utensil, however the Samsung has a comfolding touchscreen with S-Pen com patibility, giving more creativity with the device. is no way to officially “vet” collectors since anyone and everyone can trade. Vetting is intended to stop the most speculative buyers from flipping artworks for a quick profit. “Some artists are now pushing for NFTs, themselves when they do their single pieces and whatnot, but since it’s just a digital space the market is still very volatile and easy to take advantage of,” said Hoveeg Boyadjian, a math teacher. A problem still plaguing NFTs ability to become mainstream is the environmental impact they have. The block-chain code necessary to correctly attribute and use NFTs takes m up lots of server space, and those servers use lots of energy, causing them to have detrimental effects on the environment. m “If we can find a way to reduce the amount of servers needed for the block-chain, or even just power the existing servers with clean energy, the NFT market might actually have a substantial presence in the future of the global economy,” said Nathaniel Sitto, a freshman. Several marketplaces have popped up in order to make it easier to trade NFTs. Popular websites include OpenSea, Rarible, and Nifty Gateway, as well as many others, are devoted to increasing the accessibility and value of NFTs.

selves as they are finally able to legally get them on their own. Tattoos are a very controversial topic amongst parents and teens, especially those with strict beliefs. A large majority of parents don’t allow their kids to get permanent tattoos as they don’t think it is a bright idea, however when the kid turns 18 they are able to sign off themselves due to them being an adult. It has been a common theme throughout highschool students who turn 18 to get tattoos on their birthday or around it. These tattoos range from small to large, and can be anywhere that the person chooses. There can be meaning behind them, or they just enjoy what it would look like. “I have a heartbeat on my arm because my mom has AFib (a heart disease). I also have butterflies because my uncle built a butterfly house that was my favorite place when I was younger, and when he passed away all of my family got butterflies,” said Blythe Beardsley, a senior. Aside from sentimental reasons, many teens get tattoos to exercise their newfound autonomy. As legal adults, they can now make decisions for themselves, including permanent ones. Many parents object to their children getting tattoos because they’ll stick with them forever, but some teens don’t see this as an issue. “I have three tattoos currently and plan to get a lot more. I don’t regret getting any of them and am excited to continue adding to the collection,” said Zach Tarone, a senior. A Pew Research Center report said 38% of people from 18-29 said they have at least one tattoo. In a different study conducted by the same company, up to 1 in 4 people experience regret over their tattoo. “I recently got my first tattoo because I wanted to get something meaningful on my body permanently,” said Ryan Bartholomew, a student at Northern Arizona University. Students finding their adulthood get tattoos to express their authority and independence.

Tesla robot reaches new levels Kolton O’Connor guest writter
Elon Musk has revealed the design for the new Tesla Robot, and plans for it to be released in 2022. the Robot is designed to do basic human tasks. “I think the idea is pretty cool but I don’t know how long it will be until it actually releases,” said Logan Crist, a senior. It contains a new chip called the D1. It is designed to do basic tasks such as make grocery runs, which will utilize the autopilot technologies. The robot was originally presented on August 19, 2021 and a prototype is likely to be released in 2022. “Elon is a smart guy, I think the idea that you can link it to a Tesla car is really cool,” Said Kal Goff, a senior. The robot is planned to be 5’8 and 125 pounds supposed to be made out of lightweight materials. The robot will have human-like hands and 40 electromechanical actuators to supply full movement capabilities for the robot. “I don’t think it will be released in 2022, I think it will take longer,” said Goff. Next year the prototype will likely be ready, but who knows how far along it will be until a robot is delivering groceries or picking up prescriptions for people. According to Elon the robot is designed to be inherently good and help usher in the future of technology. “I probably would never get one just because I bet it would be really expensive, Said Crist. Even Musk claims that people should be afraid of AI. His vision is to create a version of these robots that can only do good and help people eliminate those boring mundane tasks out of their life. “I think it’s a cool idea, I just doubt it will ever be practical or available for use by the general public,” Said Ryan Bartholomew, an NAU student. There are tons of designed uses for the robot, it is only a matter of time until it releases and the future of robots is here.
Aura is an app designed in 2017 to help people improve their mental health through meditations, coaching, and more. “What could help is normalizing talking about mental health more and learning signs for when people need help,” said Alexis Cavalieri, a junior. Since the pandemic, mental health, especially in teens, has gone downhill. This has created a high demand for therapists around the globe, which can be costly. According to healthline, therapists charge between $60 to $120 per session. To provide help to people that cannot afford, or do not want to spend this kind of money on therapy, Aura offers affordable mindful meditations. “Aura is a good way to end the week by listening to a story or meditation on the way home from work,” said James Barr, a user of the app. The Aura app can be downloaded for free from the app store, and offers one free meditation per day. Premium users pay $12.99 a month, or $7.92 a month if paid a year in advance. The premium membership allows users to have unlimited meditations each and every day. Before using Aura, users take a personality quiz to help the app guide them to what meditations and activities they need. Activities the app offers include stories, music, and nature
