Reflection 1 Over the course of the semester I have been in this class, I feel like I have learned a lot. I joined the class in January at the start of the second semester. I learned to go outside of my box this semester, I’ve never been much a people person but this class has helped me go out of my comfort zone. I met new people and interviewed people I didn’t know and it’s helped a lot with my anxiety about meeting people in general. I also learned a lot just by watching an editor lay out their page. I feel like the only thing I need to work on is getting my work done instead of procrastinating, which I am for sure guilty of doing. Deadlines surprisingly helped me a lot. Since I am such a procrastinator, being pushed to do something by a certain time made me work harder towards making sure everything was done. Especially when it came to a final copy being due. I made sure I did all the edits and made the article look good. I think for future reference I’ll take deadlines into more consideration and do what I need to do by the time it’s supposed to be completed. For the short time I have been in this class I took teamwork into consideration a lot. I wasn’t afraid to ask anyone a question or be social. I think what I would try to do differently for next year is try and get to know everyone so talking to them if need be isn’t so awkward. I think teamwork communication wasn’t something that happened a lot but I would really like to get to know everyone better next year. I felt like I learned a lot about journalism ethics even over the course of a few months, I definitely know a lot more now than I did before. I feel like I gained a lot from being objective, I used to be a really opinionated writer before I joined this class, and without even realizing it too. Journalism ethics are really important to consider because there isn’t really a point in writing something if it’s going to be someone else’s writing or if it’s lies. For the most part, I feel like I have gained better perspective about writing. I feel like I’ve grew as a writer and there’s still room for improvement. I haven’t been doing this for very long but I feel like I’ve worked hard over the past four to five months. Since I’m new this year I wasn’t a very big help when it came to knowing who to interview. I still only know a select few of people if I’m being honest. I feel like the hardest problem I faced this semester was being put into this class halfway through the year and I had to learn everything everyone learned over the course of a few months in about a week. From that I learned that even in a tough situation I can work it out. It took some time but I got better in the class, I made more friends. I don’t think that problem itself will happen again but I do know me not knowing someone to interview will happen again. I think the best way to fix that is to just ask around or ask a friend if they know anyone who would be a good candidate for the interview. I think my greatest weakness is procrastination or being afraid to ask for help. I could get better time management skills and just get over asking someone for help because it’s not a big deal, I’ve just always been that person who’s afraid to admit they need help with something. I think next year I’ll just have to get over myself and do what I need to do. I’m very excited for next year because I’ll be in this class for a whole year instead of jumping in half way through the year. I still have some things I would like to improve but I’m sure I can fix them.

Reflection 2 I think my most significant piece of writing I did was probably my story on vegetarians, vegans, and pescetarians. I personally think it is the most significant because it was one of the first things I wrote when I joined this class. If you look at it and then look at a recent piece of work it shows a lot of difference in my writing just over a short amount of time. It sounds almost weird in a way but it has a special meaning to me because it was one of my first articles and it definitely turned out better than I thought it would. If I’m being honest it was a lot easier to write then I thought it would be. At first I was kind of nervous because I didn’t really know what type of take I would go at when I wrote it. I was afraid I would take the wrong direction but once I started writing it I knew it was going to get easier. I know quite a few people who are vegetarians and vegans surprisingly, so it was easy to learn a lot about it from what they told me which helped me add more information in my article. I received a lot of compliments from teachers, students, and my parents when they read the paper. As I wrote this piece I learned a lot about all the differences between each different lifestyle. I knew that vegetarians and vegans were different but I didn’t know they had that many differences. I also learned that not everyone has a choice when it comes to eating certain foods because of that lifestyle. Some people grew up in a vegan or vegetarian home or it was based on their religion too. I feel like the only issue I had in writing this was finding a teacher who was a vegan or vegetarian, shockingly enough my own English teacher was one. One of my best friends is a vegetarian and has been for over a year now, she helped me learn a lot about what being a I specifically liked the finished product because it turned out pretty well. I was always afraid it wouldn’t get done because at the time, 500 words seemed like a lot. When in reality it wasn’t even that much to write. I thought the piece flowed really well and included a lot of information about the topics. I definitely learned a lot about the topic and I hope everyone who read it learned more than they may have known. I was really happy with the end product and was really surprised when people told me they read it. This piece also showed me how the class really worked. It showed me what type of writing style I’m supposed to use. It was kind of like my learning tool. I learned a lot from just this one article.

meat. Although many fear they will not get enough protein without meat, vegetarians can find their source of protein in things like nuts, seeds, milk, eggs, rice, and beans. The daily iron they need can be found in things like tofu and split peas. “It was hard to give up meat at first, but the only meat I really ate was chicken,” said Jordan Bean, a junior. On the other hand, Vegans avoid all animal foods and products such as meat (including fish, shellfish, and insects), dairy, eggs, honey, and gelatin. products. Certain makeup brands will make all of their products cruelty free as well because they do not believe in animal testing. Jumping right into veganism is very hard because you are giving up a lot of things people eat in their everyday lives. Most Vegans go vegetarian before they try going fully vegan, while some are born into the lifestyle and grew up being vegan. Pescetarianism, also known as PescoVegetarianism, is probably the most uncommon and unknown type of diet. Pescetarians only eat fish, while cutting out all other red meats and chicken. Many people try this diet because it helps them give up meat easier. Vegetarians commonly do not consider this diet to be vegetarian because they are still consuming an ani-

mal, but people define it in their own ways. “I don’t completely cut out some fish and dairy, I like the term Flexitarian because it gives me a little bit of leeway,” said Lori Larkin, English teacher. Not all people turn to these diets for animal reasons, some doctors recommend it because it can benefit your health. Others may turn to it because they are looking for something new to try. Consistency is also something that should be focused on, specific patterns can make it easier to try one of these diets out but rushing into it too soon may discourage you, it takes time and patience.

Reflection 3 I am proud of the track article I wrote. It was one of the first articles I wrote this semester. It was challenging at first because I knew nothing about our track team either so I was nervous. But I thought it turned out really well and it had one of the first interviews I had ever done in it. I am also proud of the Mr. Cactus Shadows article I wrote. I really liked going to the show and watching it. It was a really cool experience and the winner was so kind. I liked the way this article turned out in the end and I enjoyed writing it. I chose it because it looked like fun and it ended up being really fun. I’m proud of the gold mine thrift shop article I wrote. I didn’t choose this article because I was absent that day. I really liked how it turned out though. It was fun to research and I learned a lot about the history of the shop itself.

fame through YouTube, an online video uploading site, by posting makeup tutorials, comedy sketches, vlogs, and singing videos. The site has grown a lot since it was first introduced in 2009, becoming a multi-billion dollar company. Recently they have come under fire for not having enough censorship on what content is being posted. “I normally only get on YouTube for music, but there has been some gross stuff popping up,” said Kyle Padgett, a freshman. Recently, Logan Paul, a popular vlogger with over 16 million subscribers, traveled to the “Suicide Forest” in Japan and posted a video which showed a man who had taken his own life. After finding the body, Paul continued to keep the camera on and zoomed in closer on the man. The video was kept up on the site with no censorship from YouTube. By the time the incident had come to the attention of YouTube, they were too late to take action. Many influencers shared their disgust with the video and anger towards the company for not realizing it soon enough. The incident led viewers to question how well the company monitors what is being posted. “When he saw the body, he got super excited that it was content for the video. I think it was wrong and he should have never shown the video,” said Mackenzie Zoerb, a freshman. Paul later went to Twitter to post an apology, and then posted another apology on YouTube. In the video, he claimed he posted it to show suicide awareness, but many people questioned his authenticity. He did delete the video, but it was kept up long enough for a portion of his 16 million subscribers to see. “I don’t think he deserves a second chance, and he kept talking about all of his mistakes that he made,” said Zoerb. According to its website, YouTube reserves the right to take material off the site if it doesn’t comply with their Terms of Service. “We aren’t telling

you what to create -- each and every creator on YouTube is unique and contributes to the vibrancy of YouTube. As with everything related to YouTube, use your common sense, don’t abuse the site, and be respectful of others.” Last month, YouTube dropped Logan Paul from their top advertising ranks and suspended his production from a YouTube movie. The Paul controversy highlights current issues with social media, and the unintended consequences of a wide-open internet. In addition to the Paul incident, YouTube was the focus of a series of controversies last year, many of which were about children being exploited, and their vulnerability as an audience. There was also controversy about the popular vlogger PewDiePie, who was condemned for including anti-Semitic humor and Nazi imagery in his videos, and videos that made it past the stricter standards YouTube has for its Kids app. These videos featured wellknown characters doing things inappropriate for younger audiences. YouTube apologized for all of this, Mackenzie Zoerb, a but the probfreshman comments on lem continues, a popular vlogger’s video as standards post. are difficult to enforce. Y the time the offi-

cial track season opened on February 5 , many members of the track and field team were ready, having participated in off-season training which began late last semester. “We have some good athletes that come out for track and the expectation for each athlete is to work to their potential each day and at a track meet,” said Steve Dodd, coach. Meets usually occur Wednesdays at 2:15 p.m. and Saturdays at 7:00 a.m. Track has many events which all have different types of training to prepare, distance runners, sprinters, which are the running events. The field events include shot put, long jump, high jump, and discus throw. Managing school work with practice is not an issue for most of the athletes in track. The track season lasts for about four months, starting in February through the beginning of May. “It’s not too bad, we don’t start practice until 3, so that gives you some time before to do some homework,” said Anna Murphy, a junior on the team. The team has four different coaches for track, each for cer-

tain events, so they can all work on their specific task. In each running event, sprinters run either 100, 200, or 400 meter sprints. Long distance runners run anything from 800 meter, 1600 meter, or 2 miles along with distance relays. In meets, runners can not participate in more than three running events with a maximum of five total events. With running comes injuries associated with track. Sprains, muscle strains, and tendon tears are common, along with shin splints. A way to care for injuries is icing and trying not to add more pain or strain against it. Track athletes normally run off season, to stay in shape for the next upcoming season. Most students who do, really enjoy running. Running is also a stress reliever which can help students get their minds off of school and other things that may be bothering them. It also helps give a healthy heart, increased energy, and improved breathing. Track and field is an Olympic sport and almost every school has a team, if they have enough members. “Most of my best friends have come from running,” said Jack Magtibay, a junior on the track team.

Dream Center Falcons crown new Mr. Cactus Shadows gifted Warren Jeffs compound

BABY RANKINGS By ANNALEE BARNETT g sports editor

The Phoenix Dream Center is helping to restore the hopes and dreams of hundreds of citizens of Colorado City after the despicable acts of polygamous leader, Warren Jeffs left the community devastated. “We’ve accomplished a lot, including acquiring the compound, serving over 2,200 people in outreaches, we’ve had a huge impact on the political scene,” said Bryan Steele, the director and CEO of the Phoenix Dream Center. Steele is also a member of Doug Ducey’s human trafficking council. The Dream Center is a nonprofit organization that battles social issues like human trafficking, homelessness, and the foster care crisis. The Dream Center has 267 facilities world wide. After Jeffs was sentenced to life in prison for child sex assault in 2011, the property was legally delegated to Briell Decker, Jeff’s 65th wife. Decker was forced to be Jeff’s wife when she was only 18, along with 79 other women. Some were as young as 12 years old. Once she had acquired the compound, Decker then proceeded to gift the property to the Phoenix Dream Center. With 41 bedrooms, meeting rooms, a GEORGE courtyard, a sports facility, two kitchens, and dining rooms, the property is worth an estimated $1.2 million, according to US News. “The entire situation is just awful. I can’t imagine what those poor people are going through,” said Kennedy Nelson, a senior. The compound is now being named the Short Creek Dream Center, after the surrounding area along the Utah and Arizona border. The community within Colorado City has also been deeply affected by Jeff’s rule as a prophet and spiritual leader. Before he was convicted and sent to jail in Texas, Jeffs broke families apart by re assigning wives, forcing young girls to marry older men, banishing rebellious boys, and forcing youths to work instead of receive an education. “I think it’s really messed up, I don’t know how a community can ever really recover from that,” said Charlie Jenkins, a senior. However, since Decker has donated the compound to the Phoenix Dream Center, things may begin to look up for the broken community. The Dream Center foundation’s mission statement is to find a need and fill it, to find a hurt and heal it. In a separate interview, Briell Decker stated, “It’s my dream to see the compound turned into a safe house and refuge for victims - a place where they can heal, grow, get educated, and find their strength and happiness.” Briell’s Dream is beginning to come true, as volunteers from the Phoenix Dream Center have moved into Colorado City. “Eventually, perhaps down the road, the people of this community will feel as welcomed as any small town community and that their hopes and dreams for their children will have no limit,” said Steele. Community engagements efforts such as food and medical distributions, entertainment events, and barbecue socials have been set in place. All are meant to mend the broken community.

Apple will cease production of this new iPhone as early as June or July of 2018, although Apple has not commented on this matter. If the company stops selling this phone, it will be the first ever iPhone that Apple has pulled before releasing a new model. Apple has been under some bad publicity lately after a new software update allowed the company to slow down older phones, hoping people would upgrade to the 8 or the X. When the public became aware of this, Apple lowered their price of battery replacement from $50 to $29 but still faces a lot of public criticism for doing so. Reports show that slowing down the old batteries, did not help sales with the new iPhones. “I had the iPhone 6 and it kept dying all the time, it was so bad,” said Madison Miller, a junior. The Yellow Fever has played an important role in Europe, the Americas, Africa and the Caribbean. corner, students start to consider certain laptops and which might be the best fit for them. If the students major is undecided, it’s best to consider a lightweight and long lasting charge laptop. A college major might also have a key factor to the decision making process. A good quality laptop is an important factor, so it does not crash, have problem in a short period of time or start dying too soon. Pricing is another factor to keep in mind, the more money invested, the better it may be. Many laptops have a lot of similarities but they depend on who is using them, some people only like certain specific brands or just the appearance of the laptop itself like color, the keyboard, and how much memory it has. The HP Spectre x360, starting at $1,049 but may be more depending on the upgrades added onto it. It transitions between Notebook, Stand, Tent, and Tablet modes, with a touch screen feature. Since it is a convertible product it can also make using it more comfortable when studying and lounging. There’s also a larger model for those who prefer a larger screen. This laptop is a lot cheaper than other popular laptops, but it has been rated for having good quality in all aspects overall. The Surface Pro, while it is touch screen like the Spectre x360, it has more of a tablet type of feel to it. The price maxes out at $2,699 with the highest memory and storage offered. This model has improved battery life but does not come with the surface pen. Its extensive battery life lasts for about thirteen and a half hours. The kickstand allows it to open to 165 degrees, letting it lay almost completely flat. As thin as this machine is, it makes it easier to transport and makes it more portable because of how light it is. The Macbook Air is Apple’s smallest and lightest laptop, easy to transport and store. It does not take up too much room. It comes in two sizes, 11 and 13 inches. The battery life lasts about twelve hours without needing to charge. The cost starts at $1,290 than goes up to about $1,600 or even $2,000. The Macbook is in the higher price range but some prefer to have Apple products over anything else.

population is at risk for Malaria. In 2013 there were almost 200 million cases with an estimated 584,000 deaths. It’s epidemic is concentrated mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is curable, if caught and treated promptly, but because it is so big in countries with less resources, unfortunately the fatality rate is higher due to lack of medical attention. However, since 2010, there

ROM designer handbags, to work clothes, to clothing for teens and children, Gold Mine Thrift Shop has a wide range of finds, relying only on donated items. Located in the center of Cave Creek, the Gold Mine has been a collection point for many relief products. The shop rarely ever throws anything away, keeping most everything for anyone who might need it. They also raise funds for over 27 charities and try to help anyone they possibly can in need. Roots of the beloved thrift store trace back to the Good Shepherd of the Hills parish in 1947, where the store was originally housed. The church first started as a mission outpost, but it was the only one in town at the time, later turning into so much more. Turning 70 years old this year, the stores’ revenue grew to $150,000 per year. “Seeing all the different kinds of people and items that came through the store, you’ve seen everything if you have worked at a thrift store,” Preston Woolsey, a former employee. The thrift shop is filled with dedicated employees and has high reviews online, with many say-

ing how much they love the store, how great the environment is, and how happy they were when they left. “I’ve only been to it once, but it was such a cool place. They had so much stuff to look at and I really liked it a lot. At first I walked in thinking I wasn’t going to find anything worth finding but I found so much,” said Jordan Bean, a junior. Accepting donations of all kinds, the shop is filled with all types of clothing, household items, art, bedding, books, cookware, electronics, hats, games and puzzles. “Going into the store is kind of a bargain and almost like a treasure hunt. You go in thinking you won’t get anything, and eventually you come out with a lot more things than you bargained for,” said Bean. Many buyers are attracted to the store for its inexpensive prices. “It’s such a cool place to go if you don’t want to blow a bunch of money, there are so many things you can find and it just gives off a bunch of good vibes. All the volunteers who work there are always so nice, kind and willing to help with anything. They always have positive attitudes,” said Madison Monoscalo, a junior. The Gold Mine is open from 9 to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
