Self Assessment I learned a lot this year, like learning I have bad senioritis. I definitely procrastinated a lot more this semester, sadly. I did learn though that a lot will come out of your hard work. I struggled with deadlines a little bit this semester but I have learned that you will do so much better when you have everything you need way ahead of time. I will focus more in the future on getting stuff done on time so I can be better prepared. I worked very well with others this year. I loved the table I sat with and it was so much fun to make new friends. I got to know so much about new people and some of them became my very best friends. I think communication is something that needs to be improved a little more but overall I think it was a great year. I definitely learned how important it is to credit your sources when writing something like an in-depth story or news story. It was something I already knew but improved on doing over this semester, especially with all the articles I wrote this semester. I feel as though I was an asset to the staff this year and I worked really hard to make all of my articles as perfect as they could be. As I mentioned before I faced a lot of procrastination and senioritis. I learned that nothing good will come from waiting to do your work and just to push through. I could find ways that help me overcome procrastination like looking for positive ways and outcomes for what I’m doing. I will plan ahead next year so I do not face so much procrastination next year, especially in college.

Most Significant Piece I feel like my most significant piece this year was my “A Womans Place article that I wrote for indepth. I worked really hard on it and spent so much time and hard work into it. I did a lot of research for this article. It went from being good to really great after help from my editor. This article was something I was very interested in because i had seen it all over social media so I felt like I knew a lot about it already. I did not struggle with it a lot because I knew so much about it as it was so it was pretty easy to begin. It was kind of hard to find people to interview though. Overall I feel like I did a really good job at putting it together and making it a complete and worth reading story. i am very proud of the way it turned out.

My Favorite Pieces One of my favorite pieces was my ocean article. This article was about ocean pollution and how dangerous it is for the earth. I really enjoyed writing this because I have a big opinion on taking care of the planet. I really enjoyed writing this because it was so easy and I had a lot of research already. It was a lot of fun to write.

Another article that was my favorite was my VR article for Life. I did not pick it at first, but I really enjoyed writing it in the end. It taught me a lot about Virtual Reality and it was a lot of fun. Interviews were hard but I’m glad I was given this article.

Lastly I liked writing my articles about where to eat for prom. I love prom season and food so it was a pretty easy article to write. It was a lot of fun to research.

n 2006, the #MeToo campaign sprang to life. Over time as it grew, it transformed to help those who have experienced and survived sexual assault, giving them a voice and allowing them to be heard. In 2017, in less than six months, the hash tag for the movement spread widely and globally to all the different communities of survivors. #MeToo has drawn attention towards how often sexual assault happens in everyday life. So many people have come forward to tell their stories, it is nearly impossible to deny the problem anymore. Before this movement became so known, shoulders were turned on sexual assault and it was not deemed a serious enough issue. “I feel like it is really important for this time of age, looking back on women’s rights in the ’80s, it was not a fun time, people that I know went through that and seeing how happy they are that that’s changing is good,” said Abby Mock, a senior. Conversations around sexual assault have evolved and this movement has helped push it in the right direction. In the United States, employers are working and trying to help create more positive and safe workplaces. With the sheer number of victims telling their stories, the power of strength in numbers makes victims more

is because of what to get, where to go, or how to celebrate, Valentine’s Day can bring on a great deal of stress. “I don’t like Valentine’s day because I actually have to try, as bad as that sounds. My wife expects things and it puts a lot of pressure on me. We’re complete opposites, so while she likes to go out, I prefer to stay in,” said Karson Shipp, world history teacher.

Under pressure Although people are often happy in a relationship, they deal with a ton of complications. There is a major social status pressure couples deal with. It is almost like society expects the couple to please them. Overall, they may be the happiest they have ever been, but they still struggle with pleasing each other, let alone the outside world. That is why they need to find a happy medium. “I think that being single on Valentine’s day is such a power move. Based on my personal experience, I feel like the most pressure I’ve felt in a relationship would be because of other people. There’s this mold you have to fit and when you bring another person into your life that doesn’t quite exceed the expectations of others, it gets to you,” said Leazier. Whether a person is single or in a relationship, it is up to them on how they enjoy and celebrate Valentine’s Day. Someone’s status does not have to define who they are. They can be allowed to love whoever they would like, however they would like, and whenever they would like. As a society, everyone has the chance to enjoy this Valentine’s Day worry free, because there is no rule as to what they can or cannot be.

Unique Valentine’s Day gifts There are many creative, fun, and cute gifts to get or make for all the significant others out there for Valentines Day. Some might be expensive, while others are simple and small.

Here are a few trending ideas: 1The Rose Bear.

Retails for around $70 and is handmade with 500 roses and comes in seven different types of rose colors.

2A necklace with the significant others name on it. It seems to be a very popular trend recently. Depending on quality and brand, prices can range from $10 to around $100.

3Then of course there are the original chocolates or flowers. They are simple, sweet and also cheap. Chocolate, depending on how big the packaging is can range from $5 to $25 and flowers only cost around five to $15 for a bouquet.

4Making a memory candle. Pick a favorite picture and use seethrough contact paper with a black and white version of the picture and adhere it to the candle.

552 reasons “I Love You” cards is a very common DIY gift. Just take a deck of old cards, write all of the reasons, decorate them, and hole punch them to thread onto book rings when finished.

6Decorate a jar and fill it with reasons of why they love them. This shows how much their significant other means to them. Fill it with memories that are shared, and save room for more to come.

7A sparkling forever flower. A forever flower can be either a flower dipped in gold covering, or made into an arrangement of the significant other’s favorites. Ranging from $39 to $250 or more, this is a gift for a special someone that will last a lifetime. Many people struggle with what to get for their significant other for Valentine’s Day. Although, with a creative mind and minimal skills needed, this Valentine’s Day will be a memorable one.

Almost old school: games that ‘00s kids grew up on Makenna French staff writer

Video games have been around for quite some time. The first commercial arcade game was released around 1971 and so many games have been created ever since. To give just a few nostalgic moments for all the gamers out there, there is Minecraft. Minecraft is a video game that allows players to build with different types of blocks in a 3D generated world it includes survival and creative modes but also adventure modes with storylines that can be bought on the marketplace. The game was first released to the public on May 17 of 2009. Created by Markus Persson and later was developed by Mojang, the game has expanded to mobile and console use over the years. “I used to play Minecraft a lot. I played on mobile and Xbox. it was fun, and it’s still pretty popular. I know some people who still play it. I still have it on my phone and scroll

past it sometimes which gives me a nostalgic type of moment,” said Christian Ramirez, a senior. Minecraft is not dead though, it is still one of the biggest games in the world averaging around 91 million players playing monthly and has sold over 100 million copies. Another game is Roblox. On the average over 70 million people

still play monthly. This game’s first beta version, Dynablox came out in 2004, which was later renamed in 2005 as Roblox. It came out of beta and was officially released in 2006. Roblox is a multiplayer online creative system which allows players to create their own games and play games created by other players. It uses lego-like structures and avatars that can be customized. “One of my favorite throwback games would probably be Poptropica because i could only play it at school. I never got to play club penguin or webkinz,” said Irelynn Hukill, a junior. Poptropica was an online game that is still active where there were multiple worlds users could play on and complete each quest for it. It is still active today. Then there are some even older games like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda which both came out in the 80s and then the classic Pac-Man which was also released as an arcade game in 1980. Video games have been around a long time and more than 150 million Americans play them. 60 percent play them daily and 64 percent of households have at least one person who plays video games. “I had a Nintendo 64, it was my first game console. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was my number one game, I spent hours and hours playing that. I love Super Smash Bros. Mario Kart 64. I was an avid video gamer,” said Bret Lineburg, a history teacher. Video games are a thing of the past and a thing of the future as well. People have careers solely based on playing video games and make millions from it as well. Many old games believe it or not are not dead and may or may not be for some time.

This is the only animated Spider-Man movie ever, so there isn’t much to compare it to in terms of animation. The animation itself is beautiful, there’s no mistaking that. Everything is very fluid and has a very comic book-esque design to it, which is what the directors said they were going for before the initial release. The story now follows Miles Morales, which is also the first time that Miles has even been mentioned in a Spider-Man movie, much less being the main character of one. Peter Parker takes on the role of a mentor instead of

the main hero, and the villains are pulled from a very long list. It was also good to see some of the more obscure Spider people brought in. I don’t think anyone knew who Peni Parker or Peter Porker were at all before the release, so getting themselves on the map a bit more was definitely a plus, as well. It won six awards, one for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards, and a Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature. This movie was amazing to watch and was a very fresh breath of life that the entire Spider-Man franchise needed. This is by far the number one iteration of SpiderMan so far, and I cannot wait to see where this style goes next.

Groups seek solution to ocean pollution Littering, sewage, ocean mining, oil spills, and toxic chemicals are polluting the planet’s marine ecosystems with trash, oil, and carbon emissions. By Makenna French

T staff writer

HE ocean covers more

than 70 percent of the planet, and human’s impact on the ocean is degrading sea life at an alarming rate.

The amount of trash

About 19 billion pounds of trash ends up in the oceans every year. According to HuffPost, this amount of trash could equate to 51 trillion micro plastic particles, small pieces of plastic less than five millimeters long. These are dangerous and harmful to the ocean and aquatic life. “It saddens me to think that we are killing our ocean and everything in it. I think we can prevent it by using less

harmful materials in our everyday life and simply bring awareness to the common people could help make a difference,” said Nilah Haines, a senior.

How plastic affects aquatic life According to Rubicon Global, a waste management company, ocean pollution, primarily plastic, affects more than 817 animal species around the world. Because of the rise in plastic production over the last decade, there has been an increase in how much is entering oceans. Plastic destroys habitats, affects animals’ mating rituals, deforms sea turtles, kills over 100,000 marine mammals a year, and over 1 million seabirds. Plastic intake has consequences, potentially killing an animal, and if worse comes to worse, wiping out an entire species. “Only a small percentage of ocean plastics float at the sea surface. Most

Small actions that make a big impact 1 Use reusable bags

100 billion plastic grocery bags are used each year, they end up in landfills and take years to decompose.

On average, the US throws out about 1,000,000,000 trees worth of paper every year.

3 Use reusable straws

Americans use 500 million plastic straws daily, these end up in oceans and in nature.

4 Save water

A leaking faucet that drips one drop per second can waste up to 2,700 gallons of water each year.

5 Save energy

Use energy efficient light bulbs and turn off all electric appliances when they are not being used.

The problem isn’t always visible The problem may be easy to ignore because it is difficult to see. A trip to the beach is likely not to include floating along plastic water bottles and soda cans, but to marine life, it’s quite clear. When the water quality is low, coral reefs suffer. Whales are found beached on shores full of trash from ingesting what lies just beneath the surface of what we see. “I think we should all compost. I think we need to recycle. Those are easy things we can do. Plastic needs to go. Bring your own bags for groceries. I think everything that is dying is very sad. It’s reckless behavior,” said Doni Nasr, a Spanish teacher. According to Geology and Human Health Case Studies, plastic takes years to decay and the toxins from plastic have essentially started to threaten the food chain, which can be potentially harmful to human health.

plastics are dispersed throughout the water column, resting on the sea floor, trapped in Arctic ice, or inside ocean animals,” said Nick Mallos, a marine biologist, in an article written for the Ocean Conservatory.

“I think the main problem is that people don’t understand how an oceans ecological system works and they don’t really understand that pollution is a problem so if it’s not a problem why fix it? It’s not directly affecting them at this moment,” said Max Engelsen, a sophomore. There are an array of alternatives to plastic. Instead of using plastic water bottles, use something like a HydroFlask. Bring reusable bags instead of using the plastic ones at grocery stores. According to Planet Aid, an organization focused on finding a balance of helping the environment and helping people, the ocean provides over 70% of the oxygen we breathe and over 97 percent of the world’s water supply. Internationally, a greater focus on renewable energy could mean less pollutants like oil would enter the ocean. Changing everyday consumption of plastics and waste opens doors for a cleaner waters.

Places like The Living Room, Grimaldi’s, and Oregano’s are more calm and casual, and not very expensive. “Going to a cheaper restaurant is what I would prefer because prom can be very expensive with paying for the dress, hair, makeup, and a party bus/limo. Steakhouses are expensive but if you go someplace like Macaroni Grill then the price will be a little different,” said Madison Monoscalco, a senior. Being cautious about what to eat is also important when it comes to picking a restaurant. Eating spicy foods will not settle well on the stomach. Messy foods can be risky, and include foods such as spaghetti and pizza. Carbonated drinks are something to stay away from as well. Staying hydrated is also important. There is a lot of dancing and jumping around at prom, so drinking lots of water will prevent dehydration and the risk of passing out due to overheating. “Two places that I would recommend for prom dinners, one is more expensive but a really cool experience and that’s Fogo de Chão. It’s a Brazilian Steakhouse and if you are vegetarian then you have a great salad bar. I want to say it’s about $60 per person for dinner. Blanco Tacos and Tequila, it has awesome Mexican food but a cool vibe but I think kids would really like it,” said Danica Gianni, an English teacher. Arizona has many different types of restaurants, expensive or not, which leaves students will a variety of choices for their prom dinner.

Summer Bucket List By: Makenna French staff writer

Over the summer is the perfect time to create a bucket list of all the different things they might want to do or try during the summer months. Here are a few ideas: DO SOMETHING SCARY, whether it is facing a fear or doing something that personally has not been tried before. Like doing a poetry slam or even going to the extreme of skydiving. LEARN TO COOK a favorite or challenging dish. Maybe an international dish, something that is not as easy as cooking mac n cheese. TAKE A ROAD TRIP. Whether it is with family or friends a road trip could be a great way to create summer memories, even if it is not a far distance. GO PHONE FREE for 24 hours, yes a horrible risk of not having a precious phone for 24 hours but it could be really good and show that there are other things important and fun to do than spending a day on a phone. GO TO A CONCERT. Seeing a favorite band in concert can be a life changing experience and a memory that will never be forgotten. PLANT A GARDEN, simple but effective. A garden can be a fun thing to do if interested in nature and taking care of plants and in the end you will get fruits, veggies, or flowers. HAVE A MOVIE MARATHON. While it is not traveling or going outside, having a movie marathons with friends can be a great bonding and catching up experience while watching movie favorites. HAVE A HOMEMADE PIZZA PARTY. Most everyone loves pizza and making it at home could be a fun experience and give small but memorable moments.
