self-reflection

This semester I feel as though I have grown very much. I stepped up my game as an editor and really put effort into my work. I learned the in’s and out’s of indesign and started getting more diverse with my page layouts and design. I got very comfortable with the program and I actually have fun designing pages now. I will carry this skill with me for the rest of my life. I can use indesign in many careers and it is a good asset to have and be able to use. Every semester I say the same thing for what I need to improve on, which is time management. I still had a hard time turning my work in on time, which I know first hand as an editor how annoying it is to not have stories in. I will, of course, try to work on my time management skills in the future and to find motivation for my work. Deadlines are my worst enemy, forever and always. Even though I absolutely despise them, they are what we need to keep this paper going. We need to have set dates for when writing and pictures should be done so production day can run smoothly. But, for me personally, I hate them. They always creep up on me and catch me by surprise. Yeah, sure, they give me motivation to get things done on time, but they always seem to find a way to get lost in the back of my mind and then I don’t turn my work in when it’s actually due. Despite the fact that I don’t think I have ever turned in an article by the deadline, I always get them done. This semester I got very close with a few of my fellow editors which I am very happy about. They were always there to help me when I needed it and we would often work together on our pages and other assignments. If I had to do something differently, it would be to talk to more of my peers more and help out others if they need it. As a team, communication is key, and we need to work on that as a collective. Working as a team is the most important part of this class. Everyone needs to do their part and help to get the paper done, because if they don’t, others will take the fall and end up doing more work than they can handle. It needs to be an even playing field for everything to get finished smoothly. I believe I was a great asset to the staff this semester. I created a connection with a few staffers, who I could count on to write great stories for my page, and I mean come on, I have one of the coolest pages in the paper. My page adds some fun spice to the newspaper and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to call this page my own. The main problem I faced this semester was time management. (surprise) I am always the one to put things off and wait until the last minute to turn things in. Procrastinating my work often led me to feel like I wasn’t putting my best work out and that I was letting my peers down. I need to focus and set goals for myself. I need to get my work done on time and be proud of everything I turn in. All in all, this semester I have grown so much as an editor and I am so grateful to have had this position in this class. Newspaper has taught me so much and I am proud to be a member of this publication. I will forever hold on to what I have learned, whether it be indesign hacks I learned from Adamson, or how to write a perfect article. Yes, I said perfect. I am going to miss this class and the people in it so much and again, I am so grateful for the opportunities I have been given.

This semester, I had a few good articles, but the one that stood out to me the most was my iced coffee smackdown from the April issue. This article is the one I am most proud of because I put the most effort into writing it than I have for any article before. I had to go around town to three different coffee shops, try their coffee, and review it. I enjoyed writing this article so much because I love coffee and I love judging things. I think my strengths showed when reviewing the coffee because I used great descriptive language and put in a large amount of information about the coffee itself, and the shop I got it at. Going to each shop was fun for me because I got to try some new coffees and I got to take pictures for the article as well. This article was also easy for me to write because I already know a lot about coffee to begin with from working at a coffee shop. This article was a breeze and was more of a fun activity than a homework assignment. When writing, I went into detail about the coffee’s price, the shop’s sizes, prices, flavors, and the overall vibe of the shop. My purpose in writing this article was to review the coffees, and let people know all the information about the shop I got it at, and it’s value. I got to let the reader know which coffee shops to visit in town and what to try while there. While researching for the article, I learned a lot about the coffee shop’s themselves and even more about coffee. My only downfall with this article is that I didn’t get it turned in on time, but I think the wait was worth it because I think I turned in an amazing article, that was a great asset to the page it was on.

This is a side bar I did for my page. I chose this because I am very happy with how it turned out despite me writing it on production day and having to figure out how to do all of these hairstyles for the pictures.
