Morgan Reimer’s 2019 Portfolio

Reflection 1 This semester, I successfully learned how to lay out a page. I learned useful design skills with the help of my fellow classmates. I can definitely use these computer skills in the future if I want to further my knowledge of how to edit, design, and format a page. I still want to work on fully understanding photoshop, and basic steps like uploading pictures into the computer. Ever since I started taking the class, I always made sure to submit writings and photos before its due date. If I could change anything, I would undoubtedly work on helping the staff writers with deadlines. I do not know it had ever been this bad before this year, but to avoid problems from everyone, I would stress the importance of getting work finished on time. I think this semester especially, we had a lot more fun as editors working on the paper. It was easy for me to talk with fellow editors because we were all comfortable with one another. I think if the staff writers who are going to be future editors one day desire a good paper, then they have to all get along well, and enjoy what they are making. If I could do anything differently, I might arrange a “staff bonding, or a hangout session where everyone can get to know each other. This would be important because it creates a better paper. In the end, we always ended up with a paper, though I wish it could have been done with a lot less stress. I learned to always give credentials if a writer is mentioning a source, and help teach the staff writers to type it correctly. This is very important because we have to have an honest and strong paper. I tried my very best to maintain strong relationships with everyone in the class, and attempted to improve my page for each issue. Even on production days when I had a volleyball tournament, I did my best to be there and work hard when I had time. The only hardships I faced this semester was probably missing production days due to tournaments. Missing those days would mean I would have to finish the week before, and it became stressful when my page’s articles were not finished. I learned to check in a lot more with the staff writers and stay to finish during the school day. My greatest weakness is probably being too nice when it comes to the paper. I have been working hard to be firm but kind when giving edits, but blunt if the photos and/or stories are weak. To overcome this, I will be more confident in my abilities, and trust that the workers will get it done the first time.

Reflection 2 I think the most significant piece I wrote for the issue was my “Women in Hollywood article. This was written for the In-depth page. This was a somewhat difficult piece to write because it involved a lot of research, and unbiased writing. In the end, I was very proud of how it looked and felt to read. This piece definitely evolved from beginning to end, because I had knowledge of the subject, but really furthered it with help. Because I aspire to go into this career field, it was very interesting to hear about all of the stories and atmosphere. In the beginning, it was challenging to piece together the information I learned without sounding biased. Because this is such a controversial topic, I wanted my writing to be cohesive and well-credited. I was also a bit nervous for the interview, because I had to discuss such a sensitive topic to people, but it ended up being just fine. I ended up interviewing Mr. Cupo, and he gave me very thought out and well-spoken responses. I loved the final product because Maja made a very detailed cutout of a lot of the women in Hollywood. It paired along very nicely, and made it have quite a finishing touch. I think for next time, writing controversial articles should not be as stressful as one might think. If the knowledge is presented in the right way, it makes a very strong piece. This is why I believe it added a good section of the paper.

In-depth, February

Reflection 3 The first article that I am proud of is my sidebar about Egypt. This was a continuation of the #metoo movement, and I think it ended up being a very strong article for that issue of the paper. (February-In-depth) Because it was a sidebar article, I had to rely purely on facts and research put into it. It could not contain biased information, but had to keep the truth in it as well as the facts. In the end, I feel it was a strong piece, and demonstrated what was going on well. The second article that I am proud of is my Tennis Preview article for the sports page. This was for the March issue of the paper. I am proud of this because I had to conquer my nerves, as this article was a very heavily interview story. It was a preview for both the boys and girls upcoming seasons, so I had to interview a player from each, and both of their coaches. After I collected the interviews, I enjoyed writing it. When it was finished, I was very happy with the outcome, and how it looked on the actual paper.

The third is my Dorm Decor This was the came out in the going off to entertaining how big the of useful dents have learned a with Mia Overall, proud of

Since I will be college next year, I found it an interesting to learn about dorm rooms will be, and types perks and decorations that studone before. In this article, I lot for next year, and connected Gilling for my adult interview. no matter how it looks, I am very how it turned out.
