Self Analytical Evaultion

Over the course of the semester, newspaper class has helped me improve and perfect some of my writing/journalism skills. I have learned many skills including good people skills which I will use a lot in the future. Interviewing people has helped me with being more comfortable around people and asking good questions that help give me information on the topic or story idea. In the future if I need to ask someone a lot of interview questions, being a part of this class was a big help in that aspect. One thing that I could definitely improve on are the deadlines in this class. Being in newspaper class with paper deadlines and certain days that things need to be done has helped combat my procrastination. Even though I for sure definitely need to improve on that still, It was better than the year before and will only get better the more I write. Teamwork is a major part of newspaper class, because it is used for everything. Staff writers have editors that look over the stories that are written and that is an essential part of the class. I am a people person and I love talking to people and learning about what they have to say, so I think I worked well with others this year and made sure to connect with them and communicate what we needed to get done. This year especially as it was stressed across all of my teachers but especially in newspaper class I learned a lot about telling the truth and making sure that my work and the things that I wrote were not plagiarized. These ethics in journalism are a very important aspect of the class, because without them the newspaper and the pages itself won’t be as good and trustworthy. My first semester senior year in Newspaper was an important one it felt like. I was leading by example by being in the class last year. I was writing extra at times and was making sure that I was just being a better student this year. I helped pass out papers

Students Vs Admin December Issue Many students feel like there is a huge gap between them and school administrators. In my opinion bb When you’re a high school student you just want your voice to be heard, you want your opinion to matter. Why do some students feel disconnect from school leaders? A lot of the challenge is generational. School administrators have formulated opinions on how things should work based on their experiences as a child, over 30 years ago. But so many things have changed, so how does our generation bridge the gap? The first step is tackling fear, fear of the unknown, fear of failure, and the fear talking to a superior. You have to not be afraid to ask questions, be curious, be brave. When I set out to write this article, my opinion was that the gap was REAL…and not easily bridged. Looking back, the gap seems more narrow than I had first imagined. It started with a call down to the office to speak with Athletic Director, Ms. Collentine. She called me out of class personally following Coach Tony Vos’ passing, after receiving an email with questions regarding the future of the varsity soccer team. As we talked, she informed me of the new candidates for head coach and assured me that the administration was doing all that they could to find the right fit for the players. That conversation made me feel more connected and cared about as a student. To further narrow the gap, Principal Barela went out of her way to show up at the sight

She obviously got word that students were involved in a crash and hopped in her car and came and saw if everyone was alright. She gave no lecture or advice, she simply listened and comforted, which made that

Best Work

This opinion article is one of my best works because of the thought

and the amount of time that was put into the story. I thought about many things that had affected me throughout the year and it was all put into the story. Getting started on this story was not to difficult as it was things that had happened to me at school that would affect the story and my opinion. This work two issues but I think the point and the idea is what made it special.

The purpose of the article was to show how close or far the gap

between the students and admin was, my opinion was one maybe not all would agree with but, I choose my side and wrote my opinion and followed it up with good facts. Being in Mrs. Harts class has also added to the connection I feel with the teachers and admin. I dont feel like I cant go up to the front office to ask a question about something even if it was more personal. Throughout this story I expressed that and I followed it up with evidence that provided good support.

Three peices of work

Falcon Soccer I chose this story as one of my favorites because it is something that I enjoyed doing because I liked the topic. I think the interviews were fun to get because of the things that were said. It was written with decent information, maybe could have been better but was just highlighting the new coach so their wasn’t a lot of information about the team and what the team is like this year.

Falcon Dance This story was also another one that I was particularly proud about as the info that was put into the story was very good and the people that I interviewed had very good responses. It was interesting to see what the class has been working on and what a couple of people have done in the class. The edits and the word choice used were all terrific.

10 day Policy This article was also a very fun one to write because it helped me learn something that could be helpful to all students. I got to talk to the principal and her assistant about the policy and what was true about it and what It really entailed. This one was also written with a bit of spice in my opinion as It was something that was really 13 days instead of 10.

The “10-day policy,” that was put into place during the 2018-2019 school year by the Arizona Department of Education, is now being enforced. However, it is more complicated than it appears. Due to a lack of awareness, teachers and students alike are confused about the guidelines and what violating them means. “I think the policy is silly because it doesn’t allow for exceptions. People can get sick or have a family emergency. It doesn’t allow for the students to be accountable,’’ said Ben Sheps, a senior. According to the student handbook, a student who reaches eight absences or tardies in one or more classes during any semester will automatically be placed on academic probation. Students on probation cannot break any school rules without getting in trouble with the dean of students. It could be something relatively small, such as a short term suspension, or worse, depending on the severity of the rule. According to the handbook, “High School students may lose credit for any class in which they accumulate 13 absences or tardies during a semester.” Academic probation can be taken away after the student has completed a semester of school with less than 12 absences without any tardies, suspensions, or truancies. When a student has five absences the attendance office will warn the student and make sure they don’t lose credit. “After the warnings at the 5th and 8th absence, the 10th absence is when the attendance committee sets up a conference with the students parents to discuss the reason on why the student was away from school and if it was a legitimate reason,” said Cristy Pine, attendance administrator. Despite this, the student handbooks it says 13 days within a semester. Administration is looking into what the handbook says, but students will have to write their letter after 10 days and go before the attendance committee explaining their absences. The Deptartment of Education will report excess absences of a student after they have missed 10% of the instructional days, which is 18 days out of the school year as an unexcused absence regardless of absence reason. Also stated by Department of Education is if a student has made up 18 absences and 10 additional consecutive missed days then the student will have to be withdrawn and re-enrolled. Even if the absences are called out by a parent or legal guardian, the absences will still be counted to the total absences under the student.

Lionel Messi, soccer player, recently departed Barcelona to play at Paris Saint-Germain. On August 10, Messi signed a two-year contract with the option to extend it for a third season. “It was crazy, I open Twitter and see that Messi had officially moved

to PSG and I couldn’t believe it, we will be seeing him in a different jersey for the first time ever,” said Connor Lund, a senior. Messi will play alongside Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, a friend of his. “Having Messi and Neymar back together on one team will surely help win some trophies and produce some great soccer to watch,

so I am excited to see what Messi can do at PSG,” said Kal Goff and long term Messi supporter. Messi was not the only new addition to PSG. On Campus Mandates

Here on campus, Cactus Shadows has completely disregarded mask mandates for students, regardless of vaccination status. Ducey’s 163 million dollar grant program to schools that do not enforce masks, is partially the reason why masks are not enforced at the school. Of course, if a student feels more comfortable wearing a mask, they have every right to do so. Cactus Shadows is currently

to designing page layouts in a way that highlights the chosen art, poems, and short stories. However, as more and more students move on from the Lit Mag, the number of members grows thinner and thinner. This was caused in part by the inability to recruit new members last year due to complications with COVID-19 protocol. Claire Geare, a senior, and now editor-in-chief, expresses her concerns with the lack of experienced members. “I joined Lit Mag my freshman year, and those people [I knew] are all gone. It’s weird being one of the only people left that I remember, in a way.” Despite the circumstances, following steps provided by Maricopa County Department of Public Health. When a student is exposed to another student positive with COVID-19, they will receive an automated message alerting them of their exposure. For vaccinated students, quarantining is optional, while unvaccinated students are required to quarantine for ten days, and show proof of a negative test.

After the different vaccines were released, many questioned their effectiveness and safety. The first vaccine to come out was Pfizer. Making its debut in December of 2020, quicker than many anticipated. Because of

there seems to be a universal sense of optimism towards the new members of the club. “We lost a lot of our previous officers, but I still think we can make a good lit magazine. We got some new kids in there,” said Francesca Douglas, a third year member of the Lit Mag. The recruiting process proved to be more chaotic than expected this year- with most members being convinced to join through a 40-minute, “club rush,” during a lunch period last August. Thousands of students flooded the center of the campus, where club leaders set up tables to frantically pitch their club to any passersby who would listen. Geare was one of these leaders. this, many feared it was rushed and non-reliable because it was not approved by the FDA in the beginning. Although the FDA approved the Pfizer vaccine in August of 2021, many are still refusing to take the vaccine. According to The New York Times, roughly eighty-five million Americans who are eligible for the vaccine are not getting it, but with President Biden’s new vaccine mandate issued in September, this could change. Biden has begun pushing individuals to get vaccinated by requiring the vaccine to all companies with over 100 employees. If not vaccinated, the alternative is weekly testing for COVID19. According to The New York

“It was actually a lot of yelling. It was me, at club rush, with a bowl of candy that I would guard, until I would force these kids to listen to my spiel. And the spiel’s pretty good. Apparently it worked, you know, you catch the right people,” describes Geare, seeking out students who seem to pay extra attention to detail in the way they present themselves. “I would see people in good outfits, or lots of jewelry, or colored hair, and I would be like, ‘You! Listen to my spiel!’” If you want to learn the practical skills needed to publish art or news yourself, the Lit Mag is still accepting new members. Wednesdays, after school, every week. Times, President Biden has legal authority to enforce these requirements. “I think that it’s kind of just like school where you have to have certain vaccinations. I just think this should be one that should be included, especially once it gets opened up to younger ages,” said Kiera Reinhard, a senior. Even just over two years since the United States went on lock down, there is still heavy debate on how to handle the pandemic while keeping everyone’s safety and individual freedoms in mind. the team to perform strongly this season. Additionally, all eyes are on the team. Over 20 million people started following PSG’s Instagram in Messi’s first two days as a member of the club. “I think Messi will play well at PSG, hopefully he gets more minutes, but with Neymar and the rest of the crazy lineup they have he

should excel there,” said Andrew Barab-Shed, a former soccer player at Cactus Shadows. In a nostalgic move, Messi took jersey number 30, his number during his first two seasons at Barcelona. In his debut, Messi subbed in for Neymar during the 66th minute in a game against Reims. PSG won 2-0, advancing in Ligue 1.

Since the beginning of 2021, gas prices have gone up by $1.24 since this time last year, according to the Energy Information Administration. The last time gas prices were above three dollars per gallon was in 2014 due heightened tensions in North Africa, as well as in the Middle-East. “I personally don’t have to pay for my own gas because my mom pays for it, but it’s going Livia Lowe science editor to be harder to do things because she’ll have ONNOR to pay a lot more money. Fibrosis. “It makes breathing harder, and makes you feel really weird because sometimes you can’t keep up the speed that everyone else can, and so doing normal things like going on a hike with people can be difficult because it’s so hard to breathe,” said Connor Paola, a senior. Cystic Fibrosis, or CF, is a genetic, progressive disease that causes breathing impairments, persistent coughing, and lung infections. According to the CF Foundation, mucus in the body is too thick due to a dysfunctional Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) protein. Because mucus is so thick in those who have CF, they must do breathing treatments every day and take medication to fight lung infections and assist in digestion. Additionally, patients must stay in the hospital occasionally if they become too ill. Despite having CF, Paola participates in the mountain biking team. Mountain biking involves riding on all types of terrain in multiple weather conditions. “My reward as a coach is not only when a rider achieves a win, reaches the podium or sets

“I’ve lived long enough to know that gas prices always fluctuate. So, there’s times where all of a sudden there’s some sort of thing in the world that makes prices spike. But during these periods where prices spike, there’s still people driving around in their big old SUV’s and so on. Not to mention that there are also people who are driving electric cars now which is making the price of gas have less of an effect on how people who use cars get around,” said Jon Bernreuter, a physics teacher. While gas prices have increased, the effect they have on travel varies greatly depending on income level, mode of transport, and even the distance of the destination.

the travel demand declines. Earlier this year, when travel restrictions were temporarily lifted, air travel prices rose 36 percent from March until June. Now with some travel restrictions being put in place again and the new COVID-19 delta variant, air travel demand is low and therefore so are the prices. There is a decrease in searches and bookings due to the new variant, but much of the dip in airfare demand is also in line with the regular seasonal demand.

Soccer teams ready for new season

New season brings new coach with years of experience in coaching soccer Owen Taylor staff writer

As tryouts for winter sports come to a close, the boys and girls soccer

teams welcome a new coach. “My mindset coming into soccer tryouts is to play the best that I can and make it my goal to make the

varsity team,” said Peyton Wernes, a freshman planning on trying out for the team. Tryouts began on November 1 and involved scrimmages in fullsided games. As placements are announced, the new coach will communicate placements to each player, For those not selected for the team, he will tell them why they were not selected and provide ways for them to improve. With the passing of coach Tony Vos, Jack Soutar will be the new coach of the boys and girls varsity

teams. “I had some people reach out and offer to be the coach but I didn’t want it to be someone with little experience, I know the team and players and know they deserve someone better than that, and that’s why I think Jack will be great,” said Tandehl Collentine, athletic director. Soutar has built his experience by coaching for many years. Additionally, he knew Tony Vos, the previous coach, and the program well, giving him an inside advantage to leading the teams to vic-

tory. Having only one coach will allow the boys and girls teams to work together more. “I think it will be fun to have both teams working together maybe more often, I also think we will be pretty good, we have a lot of new players coming in and it should be a good season,” said Gressa Cook, a girls varsity soccer player. With a new season and coach to look forward to, the soccer teams aspire to improve individually and as a team.

Suggested School Initiatives

Programs that teach students the skills to understand and manage their emotions have been tied to a noteworthy reduction in aggression, which is evident in school shooters. These programs also have seen declines in suspensions and suicidal thoughts, and

Two hours a week may not sound like much, but do not be fooled. The baton grind never stops. Anaya knows the sacrifices that come with being a star twirler. “Everything goes into it. You can’t really give half dedication to it, you need to have your full attention on it,” said Anaya. With such a focus on twirling, Anaya finds motivation through her mom, who got her into twirling at the age of five. “My mom [is my biggest supporter]. She has been my full sup-

porter through everything, like whenever I feel upset or frustrated, she always helps me out and gives me supportive words,” said Anaya. With the support from her mother, Anaya is ready and optimistic towards continuing to twirl throughout high school. “I look forward to being the twirler for Cactus Shadows for the next three years,” said Anaya. It is safe to say that Anaya can be expected at football games and pep rallies for years to come.
