Self-Reflection
The most important skill that I learned was how to use InDesign. It took me a long time to learn most of the program. Eventually I figured everything out which helped me out when I had to come in on Saturdays. I improved the most when I came in on Saturdays because I was forced to pay attention to every little detail. I did not have an issue with deadlines this semester. In the past I have had problems with deadlines because I have had more articles to write. Only having one story to write helped me out a lot because I could focus more on my page. Teamwork played a huge role in my success this semester. I enjoy working alone on schoolwork but in order for me to get what I needed to get done, I had to work with others. I needed a lot of help in InDesign and working as a team allowed me to learn more about the program. Teamwork is a skill that is a necessity when working on the paper. This semester it was easy to not plagiarize because most of my sotires did not require a lot of research. This semester I did not copy and paste anything. I learned that plagiarism gets me nowhere. Being biased is also a bad thing especially when it comes to writing a news article. I think I impacted the publication a lot this year since I really put in the effort to make an impact .When there was help needed in the classroom I would do my best to help them out. I directed them into the right direction so they could get their assignment done. When someone needed help with their story I would do my best to direct them in the correct direction. I helped out Justin and Owen a lot this semester because they were still having a hard time figuring out how to write certain stories. There were a few instances when I would get them interviews because they needed help with them. They did not understand how to write newspaper articles in the beginning but now they have an idea of how to write one. The one problem I had this semester was dealing with certain people in the class. I usually can deal with whoever I need to work with but this semester especially, it was difficult to work with everyone. I think I dealt with this situation pretty well. I don’t think I will have to deal with the issues again but now I know how to deal with circumstances like that. My greatest weakness this semester was designing my page. My page was always changed after production day. I ended up spending more time on my pages so it wouldn’t be completely different the next day.

While Arizona is known for its deserts, northern Arizona is covered in snowy mountains. The Snowbowl in Flagstaff and Sunset up on the rim are Arizona’s most popular slopes. “My friends and I enjoy going up to Flagstaff to snowboard. We go as many times as we possibly can during the winter season. It is close to home and a great mountain to ski,” said Andrew Barab Shed, a snowboarder.
The Snowbowl Located seven miles north of Flagstaff. The Snowbowl ski area covers approximately one percent of the San Francisco Peaks, and its slopes face west and northwest. According to the Official Tourism Site of Flagstaff Arizona, the Snowbowl is a 777 acre piece of land that gets approximately 108 inches of snow per winter season. The price of tickets depends on the day of the week. Tickets on the weekends are almost double of what tickets are in the middle of the week. Prices range from $99 to $45. The Snowbowl
can be expensive, especially if gear needs to be bought. “I have my own gear so it is relatively cheap for me to go snowboarding. Renting gear can be very expensive and that is why I ended up buying my own. Buying my own gear has saved me hundreds of dollars,” said Dillion Iserhott, a snowboarder.
Renting gear Can cost from $25 to $70, depending on what skiing or snowboard gear is bought. Another place to go snowboarding and skiing is in Sunrise Park Resort, which is located in Greer, Arizona. Due to COVID-19, the protocols for this years winter season are different than what they have been in the past.
Sunrise Park Resort “I am looking forward to Sunrise because it is a new mountain for me. I have been to Flagstaff in the past, but it is always too crowded. Sunrise is further away, but I think it will be worth the drive. COVID-19 is going to change my experience but I am alright with that,” said Bear Lundquist, a snowboarder.
All Sunrise Park Resort guests will be required to wear a face covering. Due to COVID-19 regulations, guests must prepurchase lift tickets, lessons and rentals in advance. According to Sunrise Park Resort, guests are requested to maintain six feet physical distance from other people at all times in the resort. Guests who arrive together will be allowed to ride lifts together. Otherwise seat capacity will be limited to two riders one at each side of the chair. The only way to buy tickets this year is by pre-purchasing. Sunrise Park Resort will be carefully managing the number of skiers and snowboarders able to enjoy the resort daily, based on the amount of terrain and lifts open to achieve physical distancing. Season passes for Sunrise Park Resort range from $100 to $560. The super senior pass is the cheapest, while the adult pass in the most expesive. Season passes are non-refundable unless the Pass Refund Option is selected and paid for at the time of the pass purchase. The Snowbowl and Sunrise Park Resort are among the most well known ski resorts in Arizona.

Citizens of Russia and India are upset with the certain events and are now protesting to change things in their countries. Russia Russian Opposition leader Alexei Navalny called for nationwide protests on Saturday after he was arrested last week when he returned to Moscow from Germany for the first time since his poisoning in August 2020. “The poisoning of Navalny needs to be talked about more because it is forcing Putin to stay in office as Russia’s leader”, said Tara Solis, a freshman. Navalny was further remanded in pre-trial detention for 30 days despite demands by the United States and some European countries to release
him. So far, over 800 people have been detained in connection with the protests, including Navalny’s wife and close aides. “A few days ago on the news, I heard that it wasn’t the first time that he was targeted”, said Bear Lundquist, a daily news watcher. The August incident was not the first time Navalny was poisoned. He was previously hospitalised in 2020 after he suffered an allergic reaction in jail, possibly from an unknown chemical substance. Two years before that, Navalny was doused with a bright green liquid in the Siberian city of Barnaul by an assailant who pretended to shake his hand. According to The Indian Express, Putin, who is entering his 22nd year in power, has even told journalists with a laugh that if Russian operatives wanted to kill Navalny, “they would
have probably finished the job.” India Angry Indian farmers have abandoned their fields to stage one of the country’s biggest ever protests. Since November, tens of thousands of farmers have been living in tents at sprawling camps pitched on highways outside the capital New Delhi. “There are always protests going on around the world but I think this one of the most important ones recently. They are no longer receiving the same pay, which is harming many families”, said Dylan Lies, a junior. For decades, the Indian government has offered guaranteed prices to farmers for certain crops, creating a stable guide to make decisions and investments for the following crop cycle. Under the previous laws, farmers had to sell their goods at auction at their state’s Agricultural Produce Market
As COVID-19 vaccines continue to roll out, many people who have been stuck at home for the past year are eager to travel to see loved ones or just to get a change of scenery. Countries across the globe have begun announcing “vaccine passports,” allowing their citizens to use proof of vaccination to travel once again. Different private and state-run initiatives have popped up offering hundreds of vaccine-related apps and services people can choose to use. At the same time, some American universities say they’ll require proof of a Covid-19 vaccination from students in order for them to return to campus. Workplaces and employers could institute similar requirements, according to some legal experts. Many states do not want to have vaccine passports because it will force their citizens to get the vaccine in order to travel. Vaccine passports would restrict people from travel-
ling when they need to. Many people are still hesitant to get the vaccine and requiring a vaccine passport will force them to get the vaccine in order to travel for work, school, and for vacations. Majority of people that think the vaccine passport should be mandatory are the people who are vaccinated. They would not have a problem getting the passport. When the vaccine first came out it was said that it would not be mandatory. There are still more than 50% of people who have not gotten the vaccine and many do plan on not getting it. If the passport is required to travel they will be stuck at home. The amount of cases in the U.S. are decreasing, therefore there is no need for people to get the vaccine passport. COVID-19 seems to be under control. Forcing people to get the vaccine in order to travel will cause anger throughout the world.
For this story I had to do a lot of research which took a long time. I knew nothing about the topic which was a struggle throughout the enitre writting proccess. I am proud of this story because it is one of my best written story this year.
I am proud of this article because is was an opinion article. It was a hard topic to talk about and I had a hard time deciding what side I wanted to choose. In the end I thought I was able to write a good story without being completly one sided.

a variety of trails in Arizona that provide a fun and unique experience for adventureseekers. Arizona is a great place to go out and ATV in, considering the wide assortment of trails and dirt roads that seem to never end. The desert is a beautiful place with open roads and scenic views that make the trip all worth it. There are many different types of ATVs that are used depending on the style of trails you enjoy riding. Some popular brands are Razor, Can-Am, and Yamaha, built for different purposes, whether it’s rock climbing, mudding, or trail riding. “I drive the turbo s razor, and we bought it because it has a higher clearance than most of the other ATV’s, which makes it
easier to avoid scraping on rocks and other objects,” said Cooper Wesley, an avid ATV and dirtbike rider, who’s been riding his whole life. One of the best scenic trails in Arizona is Broken Arrow Trails, located in Sedona, which is surrounded by the beautiful red rocks that trails 4.1 miles with rock steps, obstacles, and windy paths. The trail is a one way trail that is for the more experienced drivers who are looking for a thrill with breathtaking views. There are a variety of trails in Sedona that many people tend to explore, some going for a day-trip and others staying there for days at a time. “I typically like to go trail riding in a beautiful area like Sedona, and usually stay there for a night and go back home the next day,” said Melanie Brotsman, an ATV enthusiast.
Although Sedona is considered one of the most scenic ATV spots, there are many other trails in Arizona that provide a similar experience that aren’t as far away. For example, Rolls OHV Trail, located in Fort McDowell, is roughly an hour and a half away from Cave Creek, which is a much shorter distance that still gives a great view. There are even some scenic trails that are very close to the Cave Creek area that provide a great set of scenery, such as Spur Cross Ranch, located in Maricopa County, roughly 20 minutes from Cave Creek. It has a variety of trails and terrain with a view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. “I enjoy going to Spur Cross Ranch because it provides a fun experience with me and my friends that’s close and beautiful,” said Hunter Larson, a junior who often rides ATV trails.

Flying away with Covid-19
Judy Silva Cave Creekers are rescheduling their plans for President’s Day Weekend due to the pandemic. “Every year, I hear about President’s Day and how it’s an extremely important holiday,” said Sarah Newman, a sophomore. According to the History Channel, an online historical encyclopedia, President’s Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February, and it was originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington. It was a day to honor George Washington’s birthday even though his actual birthday is on February 22. Currently, this holiday is popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents. There are many different ways to celebrate President’s Day such as traveling to presidential sites. “I don’t recommend travelling because of I don’t COVID-19, we need to recommend keep it from spreading even more than it travelling already has,” said Lainey because of Becker, a sophomore. Many families are COVID-19, cancelling their plans we need to and are deciding to stay keep it from home for President’s Day weekend. Instead of spreading even traveling, having a small more than it family gathering is prealready has” ferred by the residents of Cave Creek. That way Laioney Baker everyone is still being responsible and staya sophomore ing safe while celebrating President’s Day. Everyone should be tested for COVID-19 before coming to a gathering to avoid a potential outbreak amongst families. The goal is to stop the spread, not increase it. “Once COVID-19 dies down, visiting Washington D.C. would make the most sense if you really want to celebrate Presidents Day,” said Zeb Shnorr, a Cactus Shadows parent. Places such as the Washington Monument in Baltimore, Maryland, the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. and Mount Rushmore in Keystone, South Dakota are places to visit to learn more about the Presidents. Leaving the state isn’t mandatory because there are a multitude of activities to do instate such as camping, skiing, and visiting historical sites all over.

As spring break gets closer, the students of Cactus Shadows High School anticipate to travel in the safest way possible. “Before traveling we all got tested for COVID-19 and while traveling we all wore masks and sanitised,” said Gracelyn Gunnell, a freshman. Traveling is a risky business, now more than even during these confusing times. While it is recommended to stay home and keep your distance from others, that can be challenging. As a whole, the US citizens have spent over a year in quarantine. Following recommended safety guidelines such as getting tested 2 to 3 days prior to traveling, wearing a mask that covers both the nose and mouth while in a public environment, avoiding crowds, and keeping six feet distance from others when able. “The airports were not busy or crowded like they used to be,” said Michelle D’Souza. As airports open and ease restrictions, it appears to some that there are not enough precautions put in place for the amount of people circling through. While airports may not be super busy this does not mean that the risk of contracting COVID-19 is
completely eliminated. Leaving the people passing through the airports to create travel guidelines of their own. “I would say the way we are traveling will stay the same until COVID-19 goes away or if you got the vaccine they may let you travel more often because there is less of a risk of contracting the virus and bringing it to and from the places you travel to,” said Solei Geist, a junior. Now that the COVID-19 vaccines have started to become available to the public many people are eager to get their hands on one in hopes that it will be the solution for a more normal time. While one and all can not be sure that this vaccine will solve the problems related to travel it is still too soon to know for sure. Getting vaccinated may not solve all the problems at hand; it sure could not hurt the process any more. Although, some countries may require the traveler to be vaccinated against COVID19 for entry. The best things to do as of now consist of wearing a mask, making sure everything around is steril, washing hands, and avoiding crowds. While this might not be full proof, these are strategies that can be used to minimise the risk of contracting COVID-19.

RAVEL RESTRICTIONS HAVE
slowly phased out as COVID-19 vaccinations increase, giving travelers more options when it comes to international travel. With spring break just around the corner, many Americans are eager to resume international travel for vacation. Although travel restrictions have eased, there are still precautions required when traveling. Anyone returning to the United States from another country over the age of two is required to take a negative COVID-19 test, three days before return. This testing mandate is
only excused for people who have proof of recovering from COVID19 three months before return. “Airlines should probably be distanced and not reach full capacity for people’s safety,” said Cody Bauer, a sophomore.
Some countries to visit
According to Trip.com, an international travel online agency, three of the top countries Americans travel to for vacation include Mexico, Jamaica, and the Bahamas. It’s no surprise considering each of these countries comes with a beach and tropical scenery. Compared to other countries, Mexico has been rather easy-going when it comes to their travel restrictions. Mexico is
open to travelers with no need to provide a negative test. Although a negative test is not required when entering Mexico, it is when entering the United States. Travel to Mexico is available to anyone, business or leisure. Being one of the first countries to reopen last year, Jamaica still has the country open for vacationers. Since it’s reopening, Jamaica has enforced strict COVID-19 protocols to keep locals and tourists safe. To fly to Jamaica, it is required for anyone of the age 12 and older to have a negative COVID-19 test in order to check into a flight, three days beforehand. When traveling to the Bahamas, a negative COVID-19 test is required
as well, but five days before departure. After acquiring a negative test, travelers then apply for a required Bahamas Travel Health Visa. This travel visa provides travelers health insurance for the duration of their stay in the Bahamas.
Travel restricted
“Traveling during COVID is different because airports are empty and eerie. It’s also just harder to get flights,” said Jordan Jeffers, a junior. During presidency, Joe Biden restricted travel to the United States from places including South Africa, Ireland, and 26 countries in Europe. The travel bans are espe-
cially strict considering the new strand of COVID-19 has been found in those places. There is no clear duration of how long these travel bans will last, but they are all placed in hopes of slowing the spread of COVID-19. “My trip to Aruba was a little stressful because although I took all precautions and isolated prior to my trip, it was a bit nerve wracking to know that I could still possibly be asymptomatic, and the test could be positive,” said Jacqueline Rivers, a marketer. Many travel agencies advise people not to travel unless it is essential, but with more and more restrictions easing, widespread travel is inevitable.

More than 50% of Israelis have received at least one dose and nearly 40% of citizens have been fully vaccinated. After being closed since March of last year, Disneyland Park, and Disney California Adventure will reopen April 30, 2021. “I was one of the only graduates with a set path and job at Disneyland, and it was gone within only a few weeks before graduation. If there is a window, a door, or a crack in the wall I would try to get back into the Disney machine however I could,” said Taylor Sipos, a former Disney employee. Since it’s abrupt shutdown, Disney has laid off roughly twenty-eight thousand employees across it’s California parks. Employees were let go with no guarantee of when, or even if their job would be waiting for them. With reopening, Disney has been able to rehire more than twenty-five thousand of their employees. “If they were losing money, then letting go employees was the right thing to do, but if they weren’t then no,” said Sophia
Smigiel, a junior. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the parks are only open to California residents with limited capacity. California residents may visit with no more than three per group. In addition to the parks reopening, so are Disneyland resorts and hotels. Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa plans to reopen in late April, along with the many other of the resort’s hotels. “I would feel safe going there right now with all of the saftey precautions,” said Halee Workman, a sophomore. Many of the park’s rides, restaurants, and stores have been modified due to COVID-19. To reduce the risk of exposure, guests get temperature screenings before entering the park, along with wearing face masks and practicing physical distancing. While this new Disneyland experience is different from previous times, the park has madedo with the current situations to make a trip to Disney available, and safe.

Located between Flagstaff and Prescott is the historic town Jerome, Arizona. Founded in 1876 as a copper mining camp, to a popular tourist attraction with a population of four-hundred fifty. Jerome has many things to offer such as ghost tours, the Jerome Grand Hotel, and restaurants. The ghost tours run day and night taking visitors to locations including cemeteries and an abandoned school to ghost hunt. The tour offers equipment such as radios and thermal cameras to enhance the expierence. The Jerome Grand Hotel which once served as a hospital in the nineteen-hundreds, is now serving as a place for tourists to stay while in Jerome. “I know most of the movies make it more scary than it seems and I think it’s a little bit of hysteria,” said Lizzy Cox, a junior.

N HISTORIC ROUTE 66, there are many road-
side attractions to spice up a road trip, but none may be more unique than Bedrock City, an abandoned theme park located in Williams, Arizona. Featuring a larger than life Fred Flinstone at the entrance and located just a few miles from the Grand Canyon, the defunct theme park turned bird aviary was the work of Francis Jerome Speckels, created after the success of the original Flintstones cartoon in the 1960s. The sister location of Bedrock City in South Dakota, the Arizona site was developed in the 1970s after the popularity of the original attraction. “The whole time all my mom talked about was how nostalgic the place was for her,” said Devon Breese, a sophomore who visited the park over spring break. The park featured large, carved stone buildings designed to replicate the village from the cartoon and life sized statues of the characters, with the main attraction being a large dinosaur slide which encourages park goers to recreate the iconic Flintstone theme song sequence in which Fred slides down a
similar dinosaur. “It’s very run down, kind of creepy,’” said Andrew Cupo, Drama teacher. “It’s actually very surreal and out of place.” At its peak, the park even featured actors playing the roles of Fred, Barney, Wilma, and more, and a train that went around a large volcano statue. With the dwindling group of tourists on Route 66, Bedrock City went empty, and officially closed its doors in 2015. “I really wish I could have seen the park in like the 1980’s or something. Back when it was new and had lots of people,” said Jackson Rinkes, a sophomore who visited the park last Fall. The newly abandoned campground was then bought by natural attraction organization Raptor Ranch, whose mission statement is to “provide all visitors with an understanding of Raptors, Falconry and Wildlife conservation, through unique educational displays and demonstrations.” Though the campground was bought by Raptor Ranch, much of the original attractions from Bedrock City remain. Bedrock City is a unique piece of Arizona’s history that’s more than worth the visit.

Vulture City
In Wickenburg, Arizona, there is Vulture City, an abandoned mine town founded in 1863. The mine was shut down in 1942 after the War Productions Board ordered the closing of all non-essential mines. Shortly after closing the town was abandoned, and is now a popular tourist destination. The town has many attractions such as Henry Wickenburg’s original house, the
ironwood tree, and the Assay Office. Near the town are many hotels for visitors to stay while visiting. “My favorite part is imagining the town when it was full of people. Imagining walking through a town in the wild west,” said Troy Marinelli, a parent.
Tombstone
Once one of the most famous mining camps in Arizona, is now the ghost town known as Tombstone. Tombstone was founded in 1879 and is located in Cochise County. One of the well known attractions at Tombstone is Bird Cage Theatre. The theatre was first made to perform shows for families and was closed in 1892. The theatre is also known to be haunted according to Trip Advisor. Haunted areas of the town include Boothill Graveyard, The Crystal Palace Saloon, and the Buford House. Boothill Graveyard is said to be one of the most haunted graveyards in Tombstone, and is a final resting place for some of the town’s most well known people. “It depends on what ghost town. If it was one that got abandoned in the last ten years then no, but if it was abandoned within the last sixty years then I would visit it,” said Carson Pershina, a junior.

Wet ‘n Wild makes changes, becomes Hurricane Harbor Kolton O’Connor staff writer
Wet ‘n Wild has officially changed its name to Hurricane Harbor and with that, there are some changes that have been made. After years of being called Wet and Wild, the valley based water park has been purchased by Six Flags and turned into Hurricane Harbor. The new park will feature an updated food center, new names for rides, and a new theme for the rides in general. This change in management has been brewing for some time now with Six Flags purchasing the water park last year but never getting to open it due to COVID-19 and the safety restrictions. “I heard about Six Flags taking over Wet ‘n Wild a few years ago and I am super excited to see what changes they have made,” said Parker Giles, a season pass holder. The water park will have numurous safety restrictions to avoid spreading COVID-19. For example, guests over the age of two and all team members will be required to wear face masks covering the nose and
mouth throughout their time on the property. The park will be restricting the amount of people in the park to maximize the space for each person. Hurricane Harbor will open with a new food center for guests which is something that some people are excited about due to the sub par food center before the change in ownership. “I never enjoyed the food that Wet ‘n Wild had to offer. I think new food will bring more people in because they won’t have to leave in order to eat,” said Dylan Lies, a junior. The park will open with new names for some of the rides including Bahama Blaster, Coconut Bay and The Anaconda.
