The final Edition!
Design My favorite page I designed this year has to be the senior section. It took the longest time for me to complete because of how much detail I was trying to put into it. If I could change anything I would’ve made the numbers next to the top ten seniors different colors and had their quotes in different places, but regardless of that I love how it turned out. Last semester I was able to very easily pick out the page design that I was the least proud of, but this semester there isn’t one that I can pick. I found my style of design that works for me and I didn’t put out any work that I wasn’t proud of. I touched a lot of different pages while helping some of the editors, so if I had to pick a page I was the least proud of I think it would have to be one of those. I love designing pages and thinking about how I want to place things on pages. When I come up with story ideas and know what photo I’m getting I can almost immediately choose how I wanted to design the page. I think about if I want the photo to have the person cut out and have the story text wrap around the picture, or however the picture fits with the story is how I place it on the page with the text. This semester I’ve learned how to be more efficient in indesign with the things outside of just designing pages. I learned some of the little things like, shockingly, actually creating the page so I can work on it and how to make new color swatches and how to save them to my computer. I would say I’m not familiar with every tool in indesign, but there is definitely still room to master soom of the tools that I don’t typically use.
SUPREME CHOICE A
Claire Geare Editor in Chief
FTER THE RESIGNATION of Supreme Court Justice Stephen Bryer in late January, all eyes have been on Joe Biden’s nomination for the position, Ketanji Brown Jackson. What most people don’t know, however, is that Jackson isn’t new to this. “To be completely honest I hadn’t heard of [Ketanji Brown Jackson] until this interview In his four years of presidency, Republican President Donald Trump appointed three justices, a record number in such a short time. In fact, before President Obama stepped down in 2016, Jackson was one of five interviewees to replace Justice BLAH BLAH. Her journey ended there, with President Trump appointing Justice BLAH BLAH. Now, with the unexpected resignation of Justice Bryer, President Joe Biden plans to appoint a justice radically different than the court has seen in the past four years. “I do think that appointing Jackson is important for everyone in the country. I might not really be able to grasp how big something like this would be personally, but I support the idea fully. It’s been too long for America to never have a black female supreme court justice,” said Aubrey Ozaki, an International Baccalaureate student. Born from an educator and a lawyer, Ketanji Brown Jackson grew up in Miami, Florida but went on to study government at Harvard University. Jackson was active on campus in adolescence, leading a protest against a student with the confederate flag in his dorm window. After graduating in 1992, Jackson worked as a staff writer and reporter for Time Magazine before returning to Harvard Law School. Jackson then continued to use her extensive academic background, working as a private lawyer, assistant special counsel, and federal public defender. In 2009, Obama nominated Jackson for vice chair of the United States Sentencing Commision. Jackson was approved unanimously, and in her time worked to create a two offense level system for drug crimes. (“Federal Prisons Could Release 1,000 Times More Drug Offenders Than Obama Did”). QUOTE In 2012, Jackson was once again nominated by Obama to serve on the United States District Court of Columbia. Jackson was introduced at the confirmation hearing by
Republican Paul Ryan, stating “Our politics may differ, but my praise for Ketanji’s intellect, for her character, for her integrity, it is unequivocal.” She was approved by the full senate through voice vote in 2013, and approved by Justice Bryer himself. “I had no idea she had been approved before to work in the district court, unanimously too. I’ve heard a lot of stuff on the news about [Ketanji Brown Jackson], but I haven’t heard anything about her background. I feel like that’s a bad sign or something,” said Ozaki. With 26 years of legal experience, two unanimous confirmations for government positions, and over 600 opinions with a mere 12 reversals, it’s hard to see how Jackson has become a controversial choice to fill Justice Bryer’s shoes. But in a divided government, confirmation hearings can become a battleground between parties. QUOTE In 2017, a Republican majority senate voted 52-48 to lower the supreme court nomination vote threshold to a simple majority. This action prevents filibusters, and allows nominees to be voted in theoretically along party lines. This is an act of retaliation against the Democrats, who in 2013 voted to lower the voting threshold for most federal judicial positions. However, this is the first time the threshold has been lowered for supreme court nominations. QUOTE Despite Jackson’s many years of experience, she has become quite a controversial pick to replace Justice Bryer. Republicans have criticized Jackson’s past as a public

defender, specifically her work challenging rulings against Guantanamo Bay prisoners. Jackson herself has declined to comment on the actual content of the case, stating at her district court hearings “it would be inappropriate for me to comment on whether I disagreed with Khi Ali Gul, found his alleged crimes offensive, or considered resigning my position as an Assistant Federal Public Defender based on any such disagreement or offense.” QUOTE There is a case for Jackson’s past as a public defender making her more qualified for the supreme court. Jackson will be the first public defender to join the supreme court in history, and her experience in the “trenches” of the legal system could be a valuable asset to the bench. It’s also important to note that Jackson’s appointment wouldn’t actually change the makeup of the bench too radically. As it stands, the court has six conservative leaning judges and three left leaning judges. Even with her appointment, the court has a conservative majority. QUOTE Ketanji Brown Jackson is a court room veteran, with 26 years of experience and over 600 opinions. Jackson has consistently been a top candidate for the position, and her confirmation is no surprise with her background. In a diverse country, we deserve a diverse court, and Justice Jackson is a qualified choice.

CONFLICT
IN
Ukraine has reached a new boiling point, with Russian forces, at the direction of President Vladimir Putin, moving into the eastern portion of the nation, taking control of the nuclear power plant Chernobyl, and entering the capital city of Kyev. U.S. intelligence believes that Russia has launched more than 200 missiles at Ukraine. The Miami Herald reported on Saturday that at least 198 Ukrainians, including three children, have been killed as a result of attacks by Russia. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said last week that 150,000 Ukrainians have been displaced since Russia invaded. Since the annexation of Crimea in 2014, Russian forces have continued to have an active presence near Ukrainian territory. As a result, there has been much debate among the international community on how to resolve the situation, and how much of a threat Russia posed to its neighbors. “Russia is a very nationalistic country and the annexation of Crimea was just a taste of what Russia is willing to do for power. This invasion of the Donbas is the first major step in a series of many towards trying to achieve the success of their former Soviet era glory days,” said Ezekiel Knibbe, a junior. Putin has gone on to reinforce the notion that Ukraine is a fake country propagated
by communist Russia prior to the fall of the Soviet Union, despite Ukraine becoming a nation in 1917 in the aftermath of World War One.

HISTORY OF CONFLICT
Since the birth of the Ukraine, Russia has consistently made efforts to ensure that Russia maintains control of the region. While Russia effectively gained control over Ukraine during the reign of the Soviet Union, after its collapse, Ukraine has had a strong desire to maintain independence from Russia. “If Ukraine falls to Russia, the EU will either have to rely on the US for security more, or become more friendly with Russia and give in to their demands,” said Benjamin Gilbert, a freshman. “Europe is at the precipice of making an important decision on whether to choose Russia or the US to gain power in Europe. This situation in Ukraine will be the ultimate deciding factor.” During the early era of Putin’s reign, several former soviet states joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU). Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Slovakia joined the EU in 2004, followed by Bulgaria and Romania in 2007. Ukraine, however, resisted this movement due to fear of Russia, ultimately choosing a foreign policy of balancing relations between Russia and the EU. This did not last long, however. In 2014, despite the gen-

Whether this happens depends entirely on the United States’ response, much more than it does Ukraine’s because Ukraine is reliant on its western allies.” Putin has been in charge of Russia for the past 22 years, getting elected in 2000. The Russian Ministry of Defense was hacked and taken down, and the personal information of its employees was leaked; the hacker group known as Anonymous claimed credit. “It’s a game of chicken between the U.S. and Russia. Putin thinks that Joe Biden doesn’t have the will to engage in military action with Russia. If we want to ensure Ukrainian independence, we need a military build up of U.S. troops in Ukraine as well as the economic sanctions we are already putting in place,” said Thomas. For the first time in its history, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) activated its rapid response troops. These troops can deploy quickly if Russian troops cross the borders of NATO countries. NATO said the attack was “unjustified and unprovoked” and a “serious threat to Euro-Atlantic security,” adding that it was deploying additional forces to the “eastern part of the alliance, as well as additional maritime assets.”

Long awaited Lego Star Wars game
Philip Tate editor in chief
T
HE DEVELOPERS AT TT GAMES have created the new Lego Star Wars the Skywalker Saga game that features missions and storylines from all nine of the Star Wars movies in the Skywalker Saga. “I’m excited to see the new Star Wars characters in the Lego games and I’m interested in seeing how they connect all the different movies together. I’m also interested in how it’s going to work out with them making the characters actually talk because in the past it has just been the mumbles. I wonder if it’ll be dialogue from the movies or new voice actors,” said Kristine Zeeb, a Math Teacher. This rebuilt entry from TT games includes much of the same story from the previous Lego Star Wars the Complete Saga from 2007, but the New Skywalker Saga features all of the new Star Wars films and has more canonized missions, while still including the typical silliness from lego games. Each of the nine Star Wars episodes can be played in any desired order, but only covers the main plot lines from each episode. GAMING ON. Cyber warfare brings new danger to combat
Hudson Ellis sports editor
Cyber warfare is a form of technological terrorism where a nation or organization targets other countries computers or information systems. This form of warfare is relatively new, but the threat is very real. Since the polarizing Russian invasion of Ukraine, nations around the world, especially in NATO, are worried about Russia targeting one of them next. A targeted attack on a military’s information systems could be devastating if done correctly. “[A cyber attack] could seriously lower our communications,” said Jacob Weinman With this in mind, many are increasing their cybersecurity. Australia plans to spend $10 billion on their cyber warfare unit, nearly doubling it in size. This being said, so far Russia’s use of cyber attacks
has been limited. Most of Russia’s campaign in Ukraine has been based on tanks, missiles, and artillery bombardments. Experts say Russia’s cyberwar is going to be long and drawn out, and many aren’t sure what to expect. Russia has not yet targeted any large-
scale information systems, with the exception of the disabling of Ukrainian government websites. Belarusian terrorist groups have been linked to malicious emails sent to Ukrainian military officials. 10,000 modems for the Ukrainian satellite provider Viasat have been

knocked offline. US officials have linked the attack to Russia, though this is unconfirmed. China, another military superpower, has technological capabilities far exceeding that of Russia, with speculation that China could utilize this against Taiwan. China has long sought after Taiwan, and proclaims that Taiwan is a territory that belongs to the country. “[Cyber warfare] is going to pick up steam,” said Bret Lineburg, a military history teacher. Anonymous, a decentralized hacking group, have done several cyberattacks against the Russian government, including two attacks on Russian industrial firms. The attacks leaked 140,000 emails from within the Mashoil firm, and over 2.4 GB of data from the Rostproekt firm. The group also hijacked a Russian state radio and television station, VGTRK. VGTRK is one of Russia’s largest media conglomerates, with different regional and federal branches across the nation.
New Elden Ring game appeals to fan base Max Hancock opinion editor
The newest RPG video game, Elden Ring, released on Feb. 25 and has been the latest craze, accumulating 1 million players worldwide within the first few weeks of dropping. Elden Ring was created by FromSoftware inc, a Japanese video game developer famous for their ability to make unique and notoriously difficult RPGs, or “role playing games.” In addition, the story of the game was written by George R.R. Martin, the original mind and author behind the Game of Thrones series. Martin and Hidetake Miyazaki, head executive of FromSoftware inc, worked together to create an open world video game that unlocked new levels of fantasy while still paying tribute to their past releases.

With a 4.85 GPA, seniors Sophia Barnedo and Bryden Kaminsky are declared as the class of 2022 valedictorians. Both Barnedo and Kaminsky have been attending Cave Creek Unified School District since elementary school. Barnedo attended Lone Mountain Elementary School, and Kaminsky Horseshoe Trails Elementary School. Then going from Sonoran trails Middle School, to of course, Cactus Shadows High School. “I didn’t think it was gonna be me,” said Sophia Barnedo, valedictorian. Valedictorian was not a title Barnedo had her eye set on, so being named valedictorian came to her as a shock. “I feel like I really found myself valuing what I want to do, and valuing myself was more important than valuing my class rank,” said Barnedo. Similar to Barnedo, Kaminsky did not have the goal to become valedictorian, instead it came naturally. “I wasn’t surprised, but I’m definitely happy about it,” said Bryden Kaminsky, valedictorian. Next year Barnedo will continue her academic career at University of California, Irvine. Barnedo chose this

With the second-highest GPA across the entire senior class, Ryan Toughill has been announced as this year’s salutatorian. “I stressed a lot about school and my grades, probably more than I should have,” said Toughill. Toughill has been attending CCUSD since elementary school, starting off at Desert Willow Elementary, then moving on to Sonoran Trails Middle School. Toughill has worked hard throughout his entire high school career by taking honors, AP, and IB classes. Currently, he is deciding where to attend college based on scholarship opportunities. His two choices are Arizona State University in Tempe and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott. Even though Toughill is deciding between universities right now, he knows his heart is set on majoring in aerospace engineering. Besides focusing on grades and classes, Toughill was also involved in a number of extracurricular activities. He is a part of the cross-country team and math club here on campus. He is also in numerous honors societies, including the Science National Honors Society, Spanish National Honors Society, Math National Honors Society, Chinese Honors Society, and the original National Honors Society.
One of Elden Ring’s main audience grabs is the map. The landscape of Elden Ring is undoubtedly huge, and brings a vastness unseen in any other title. As time goes on, Elden Ring’s fan base will undoubtedly grow and it will be interesting to see what community is created in the wake of its release.

It’s 15 minutes from the beach, but it’s also a public ivy and has a really good business program,” said Barnedo. Kaminsky is still deciding what school he would like to attend next school year, but is interested in political science or economics. As for potential careers, Barnedo has no specific goals, but will simply see how her future plays out. “I really like to play guitar, I like to hangout with my friends and get boba, and swim,” said Barnedo. Teachers that have stood out to Barnedo during high school were English teacher Tracy Clay, and Chinese teacher Lan Guo. Barnedo is president of National Honors Society, Chinese Honors Society, and Cultural Student Union. “She [Tracy Clay] is awesome, she’s the best teacher here,” said Kaminsky. Kaminsky is also a part of clubs including Model UN, and National French Honors Society. Through hard work and dedication, Barnedo and Kaminsky have rightfully earned their title as this year’s valedictorians.

Though he is involved in many clubs and has maintained excellent grades, his real passion lies in math and science, however. He is thoroughly interested in robotics and enjoys attending the club. “My favorite class was probably my calculus class I took last year, it was really challenging but also fun,” said Toughill. Toughill was somewhat aiming to be valedictorian, and he admittedly was a little disappointed when he found out he didn’t make it. However, he recognizes that being named salutatorian is still a very big success. This title opens the door for various scholarship opportunities, and even possible entry into some very selective universities across the nation and world. Although there were some very difficult and stressful times throughout high school, Ryan Toughill managed to maintain outstanding grades to be announced as the 2022 senior class salutatorian.

Writing
My most significant piece of writing this semester was definitely my spotlight on Matt McGregor. I loved this story because I got to spotlight a person dedicated to school spirit and a person I would consider one of my best friends. This story wasn’t hard for me to write because I knew exactly what things I wanted to focus on. I kind of jokingly wrote down the idea to spotlight him on my idea sheets for months, but when we were picking what stories were going on each page and the idea to write a spotlight on him was finalizing I couldn’t help but be excited. From when we decided this story idea was a go I knew exactly who I wanted to interview and how I would meet my word count. I was able to interview a couple of Matt’s friends pretty quickly, but getting the adult interview was definitely the most challenging thing when it came to writing this article. It took multiple trips to Zilkas’ classroom to find a good time that she could be interviewed until I just decided to figure out exactly what question I needed to ask and asked her during passing period. The spotlight was put onto the page with a perfect photo of
Matt doing the announcements and I wouldn’t have had the story come out any other way.

Matthew McGregor: one of the many voices behind the daily school announcements

ATTHEW MCGREGOR, ONE of the voices behind the
daily announcements, a member of Student council and a nest leader this school year, is always showing his falcon pride by doing the most at Cactus Shadows. “I love Cactus Shadows because there are so many great people who all hold such talent and abilities. My goal is to inspire them to be their greatest selves,” Matt McGregor, a senior. The daily announcements are done by a group of 10 students within Cactus Shadows’s Student council. McGregor is only scheduled to do the announcements two times a week on Tuesdays and Fridays, but he typically does it three times a week covering other speakers. The announcements are set with 10 speakers and are supposed to have 2 a day, but because of how much McGregor likes to do the announcements his co-speakers often ask him to cover them. “Well it’s amazing to inform everybody about the amazing events happening at Cactus shadows. I enjoy it because I get to be on the staff side of Cactus Shadows and I get to see the bigger picture of our high school,” said McGregor. This school year, McGregor has worked on creating and establishing the homecoming theme, working on multiple
pep rallies, and helped come up with multiple spirit week ideas and dealt a part in trying to raise holiday spirit with free cookies. McGregor’s first year in student council is this school year and he enjoys it because he loves to be able to do something for the school and community. “Matt has been a great addition to student leadership, he wasn’t in student council before, but he is for the first time his senior year and he always brings tremendous enthusiasm to all of the projects that we do and he always has a good outlook and willing to help out whenever needed and those same characteristics carry over to being a nest leader,” said Allison Zilka, the Student Council advisor. Matt was just always so hyperactive and excited about everything and he was just such a great guy, he never really had a bad day, he’s always in a good mood, he lifted everyone’s spirits, he was a great addition to Student Council and the Nest Leaders, and I think it wouldn’t have been the same senior year Nest Leader team if it wasn’t for Matt,” Connor lund, A Nest Leader. Leading This year as Editor in Chief I feel I did the best job I could’ve when it comes to bringing the class together. I don’t feel anyone felt like they were alone in this class and I wouldn’t say any of us aren’t familiar with each other. We feel like a team family because we don’t all think and react the same way to things just as a family does. The class works so well because of that. While I love leading the class it is definitely not easy all the time. I’d say it is a pretty big challenge to bring the class together and make them all do things that they don’t want to do. It’s also difficult to lead a bunch of kids that are the same age as me. It definitely can get weird when I have to tell people that I respect on a friendship level to do things. I think because of the fact that I’m popular with my peers helps because most of them respect me on a leader level when it comes to this class. My mom has always told me that I’m a natural leader and I never really understood why she always said that until this year. This year I became a manager at work and the Editor in Chief here in Newspaper and with that I was shown exactly why my mom’s always said that I’m a natural leader. To create an award winning paper we need the dedication that a few of the editors have and we need the knowledge and leadership that Claire and I have. We’re very good at always getting everything done. There’s always a time where we are missing something going into production day, and as annoying as that is, we still find a way to make our paper the best it can be. Where we can improve is how serious some of us take the paper. Our last issue we had an inappropriate title leak and that happened because the paper was taken as a joke to some. I think the quote “you can’t blow an uncertain trumpet.” means that you can’t go into leading expecting to be able to say everything you think. You can’t blame people for random things and you can’t lead as a joke. To lead without blowing a uncertain trumpet one has to lead with certainty.

GAMING ON. TT games has been developing the game for five years with it getting delayed three times since the announcement in 2019. The game was released on Tuesday, April 5 and comes at the full $59.99 price.

“[A cyber attack] could seriously lower our communications,” said Jacob Weinman
has been limited.
The attacks leaked 140,000 emails from within the Mashoil
Elden ring is a completely open world game tied together by a solid yet unrestricting storyline, allowing the player to explore a massive world to their discretion. Players can explore the various dungeons and catacombs in no particular order, allowing total and complete freedom.

HE DEVELOPERS AT TT GAMES have cre-
ated the new Lego Star Wars the Skywalker Saga game that features missions and storylines from all nine of the Star Wars movies in the Skywalker Saga. GAMING ON.
