As the end of my senior year comes around, I have a lot in
publications to look back on. Everyone I’ve worked with and all the friendships
I’ve made have honestly shaped me into the person I am now; without the creative minds and kind hearts I may be a completely different person. When it comes to what I have learned this year, I question- where does it end? I suppose starting with actual production skills, I have officially become a master at getting staffers to do their jobs. Although they are always hesitant, most likely due to lack of ambition or interest in the publications, but with the help of my peer editors and editors in chiefs, I have found every which way to get staffers to do their work. This will, of course, be useful in the future as to spark motivation in others and anyone I do business with. The one thing I feel as though I can improve on is motivating myself--I’ve always had trouble with procrastination. However, this has definitely been my best year for not procrastinating as far as publications go. With both yearbook and newspaper, deadlines are always a stressful time. Surprisingly, I’ve learned that the only way to do better at deadlines and to destress is to give it time. As deadlines came and went, I noticed it starting to get easier for me to be level headed during trying times. In the future, it will only get better, so therefore it’s only uphill from here. Teamwork is such a helpful and important aspect of any group working as a unit. We all really started working as good as a well oiled machine together this year, and the staff has improved dramatically in their motivation to learn more about journalism. Almost all of the staff now knows how to use InDesign on their own, and I tried as well as I could to individually assist all of the staffers in helping them with their computer struggles. The only thing I feel like should change next year is, as always, staff taking responsibility for what they are assigned/sign up for. Of course ethics are always important, but the hard thing about journalism ethics is that they are learned over time instead of innately known. My journalism ethics this year have been ironed out to where everyone expects them to be. They are nearly by the book, and I feel the most confident I have that when I am writing and doing investigative journalism that I am going about it in the correct way. I, by all means, gave my utmost effort and dedication to what publications I am in. I went out of my way multiple times to make up for what other people could not do, and I tried my best to get what staffers were writing for my page to dedicate themselves to their articles. However, when any of those people fell through which was mainly on sidebars, I would ask for help from peer editors or just make the sidebar myself. My biggest problem I faced this year was both upping the dedication of my peers and myself, and I feel like I did my best effort to do both of those things. If the problem was to arise again, the only thing I would do differently would be to be the pinnacle of dedication so everyone else would heed my word. This year was the biggest year of growth in my publications career, and I would not change it for anything. I feel like I have found my footing in what I am interested in, and this whole year has been growing upon it and broadening my horizons.

reflection reflection reflection By a long shot, my favorite spread was undoubtedly the “influence of influenza” spread of the March issue. Not only was Sara’s graphic perfect, but each of the stories were very well written and were submitted on time. In the beginning, this proved to be the most challenging spread. I knew of the idea and everyone thought it would be a great way to give insight into the severity of the Flu outbreak. The only problems I had were trying to get the staffers interested to write info-driven stories, and how I was going to go about getting enough visuals on the page. It would have been on the verge of gross if I had a picture of a sick person, and I doubted I would find anyone to be willing and sick enough to have their picture taken. That’s when Sara stepped in and created an amazing graphic that is honestly my all time favorite of any graphic I have had. Once the visuals were taken care of I did my best to get my writers to be interested and to do their best job on their articles because I knew I wanted this spread to be one to remember. Not only was I given an insightful and thorough opinion piece, but also a direct yet interesting main story and the only good lighthearted features story I’ve had to date. This spread was most likely successful purely because this was the only spread that the writers came to be interested in and therefore wrote the articles with passion--leading to a well done spread in its entirety. I learned from this spread that the pages are only as good as their content; no amount of design can save bad articles. Knowing that now, I will continue to focus on not only making the
pages look good, but making sure the stories and infographics are accurate, interesting, and comprehensive.

in this day and age are exposed to new and rapidly growing technologies that are steadily affecting their physical and mental wellbeing. Today’s adolescents are the first to grow up alongside these new technologies. Generation Z is closely looked upon as the most “troubled” group because of the addictive nature of cell phones. Through several studies run by medicaldaily.com and livestrong.com, there are benefits and doubts on how well smartphones are for the population. Although there are many benefits to these life-changing devices, there could be several dangers. “The biggest concern I have is the research showing how cell phones are changing how the brain works, which is leading to anxiety and depression as well as other social and emotional problems,” said Laurie Umbarger, Assistant Principal of Academics.

URING the past few decades,
the capabilities of the Internet and mobile technology have grown and evolved- and our lifestyles have followed suit. However, our social skills may have actually devolved. Initially, it was used by businesses or large corporations to market, recruit workers, expand to new places, or gain a larger audience. Now, technology like the Internet and cell phones have seeped into the everyday life of the average 21st century person; according to a Pew Research Center survey, roughly three quarters of Americans today have smartphones. Those who have access to internet bearing technology have a connection to all the information people could ever need or wish to learn about, along with the ability to talk to others across the globe.
They can shop, find jobs, stay updated with the news, do schoolwork, and entertain ourselves in practically any way - all online. These tools give people the power to navigate our daily lives a hundred times more efficiently and easily, unlike before when there was a different medium for everything. Obviously, with technology’s huge impact on these aspects of our lives come its effects on our social lives as well. And in today’s society, having a smartphone is near unavoidable. We can more than easily connect with people in all corners of the world as well as strengthen and maintain relationships we already have. However, with all of the benefits that have come with these developments, there are drawbacks as well. Since practically everything can be done through our smartphones, it is harder to tear away from it, which leads to a negative effect
M
on our social habits more than anything. “I think the way people communicate has definitely changed since smartphones and social media have become more popular,” said Dacia Austin, a senior. “There are some good things about it; we get to stay in touch more easily with people, but some of those relationships are kind of meaningless if they’re based solely off social media.” Social media tends to be a hot topic in the largely debated argument concerning internet addictions today. A poll by Common Sense Media reported that 50% of teens admit to feeling addicted to their phones. While its intention is for people to stay connected to people in their lives or even make new friends online based on common interests, genuine human interaction and organic relationships are arguably impossible to replicate. Even so, the main culprit isn’t solely having social media or a smartphone. The harm
According to Dr. Hyung Suk Seo at Korea University in Seoul, a study conducted under his direction found that, “teens who use smartphones experience changes to their brain chemistry that mirror those prompted by addiction.” Many agree that smartphones are affecting adolescents and how they communicate with each other, but this information points to the possibility of problems that could profoundly affect teenage brains and not just their social abilities. “Anything in excess is harmful. Cellphones are great tools, but too much time on them can create a lack of social skills, depression, anxiety, and even hostility,” said Umbarger. In addition to concerns about addictive behavior, research reported by the Atlantic Monthly shows a sharp increase in depression among teens since the first smartphone was released in 2012. Another study conducted by the U.S.

Department of Health and Human Services, found that, “between 2010 and 2016, the number of adolescents who experienced at least one major depressive episode leapt by 60%.” The constant need to check social media can lead to depression and can lower one’s self esteem. According to Psychology Today, 65 percent sleep with or next to their smartphones. Studies also show that people spend at least 2.7 hours on their phones per day.

PHYSICAL EFFECTS There are also physical side effects of being on a cellphone for long periods of time. According to livestrong.com, constantly being on cell phones leads to increased stress levels, eye vision problems, an increased risk of illness in the immune systems, and even an increased chance of chronic back pain. Not everyone, however, agrees that smartphones are harmful. Because this is the first generation to be born into this technology, there are those that think the studies may be inconclusive, and that only time can tell how harmful phones really are. “There’s clearly no addictions, it is a dependent thought. It depends on the personality, when you have an addictive personality or not. From my point of view, it’s not right to stereotype a generation,” said Wesley Winter, a junior. There are other positive aspects of smartphones that may outweigh the concerns. “I think that students are addicted to their phones because it’s their way of giving their voice out there. They could communicate out there easier, especially now with all of the new technology,” said Devon Witham, a junior.

ACADEMY AWARDS On March 4, Jimmy Kimmel will host the 90th annual Academy Awards, or Oscars. The nominees were announced on Jan. 3.
Starting off with best picture, nominees include Call Me By Your Name, The Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Get Out, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread, The Post, The Shape Of Water, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Of these nominees, I would select Get Out as my choice winner solely because of its uniqueness and different approach to the horror genre. The nominees for actor in a leading role are Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name), Daniel Day-Lewis, (Phantom Thread), Daniel Kaluuya, (Get Out), Gary Oldman, (Darkest Hour), Denzel Washington, (Roman J. Israel, Esq.) Out of the picks, I regretfully do not have a solid choice because I feel as though there are multiple actors deserving of the award. The nominees for lead actress include Sally Hawkins, (The Shape of Water), Frances McDormand, (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Margot Robbie, (I, Tonya), Saoirse Ronan, (Lady

Bird), Meryl Streep, (The Post). I want Robbie to win this title because I feel like her portrayal of Tonya Harding was so immersive and real I cannot see any of the nominees coming close. For best supporting actor, the nominees are Willem Dafoe, (The Florida Project), Woody Harrelson, (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Richard Jenkins, (The Shape of Water), Christopher Plummer, (All the Money in the World), Sam Rockwell, (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri). I am rooting for either Rockwell or Harrelson purely because I want Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri to win this category. Best supporting actress nominees are Mary J. Blige, (Mudbound), Allison Janney, (I, Tonya), Lesley Manville, (Phantom Thread), Laurie Metcalf, (Lady Bird) and Octavia Spencer, (The Shape of Water). I would love for Janney to win best supporting actress, because not only have I loved her prior works, but she was exceptional as the dark LaVona Harding. As for the best director category, the nominees include
Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk), Jordan Peele (Get Out), Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread), and Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water). Of these, I hope to see Peele win for Get Out, because of how surprising the movie was and I loved his view. One more category includes best visual effects, a personal favorite, which includes (Blade Runner 2049) John Nelson, Paul Lambert, Richard R. Hoover, Gerd Nefzer, (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) Christopher Townsend, Guy Williams, Jonathan Fawkner, Dan Sudick, (Kong: Skull Island) Stephen Rosenbaum, Jeff White, Scott Benza, Mike Meinardus, (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) Ben Morris, Mike Mulholland, Chris Corbould, Neal Scanlan, and (War for the Planet of the Apes) Joe Letteri, Dan Lemmon, Daniel Barrett, Joel Whist. I undoubtedly want Blade Runner 2049 to win, not only because of my previous review, but also I truly loved the effects in that movie alone.

HROUGHOUT the
entire United States, the flu outbreak has affected the majority of the country, reaching 48 states. Through coughing, sneezing, sore throats, headaches, skipping school, and more, this flu season tops the charts as one of the worst America had for a long time. “It’s awful, it took me out of school for like, three weeks. It was pretty bad,” said Kate Rosenbaum, a senior. Influenza, or the flu, swings back around every winter, but this year specifically it has been affecting the younger and older age groups. According to the CDC, or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all of the U.S states except for Hawaii and Oregon report ongoing flu activity. “Your temperature’s generally really high, and you don’t really feel like doing anything. I kind of felt light headed a little bit,” said Rochelle Ring, a junior. Signs that may lead to the flu include headaches, fatigue, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and muscle or body aches. Depending on the age of the person, it could be more or less severe if they actually have the flu. When someone contracts the flu, the main solution to getting better is to rest, eat as healthy as possible, and take the proper medications. “You just drink water, keep hydrated, eat something if you can. Take some medicine if you can take it,” said Ring. In correspondence with the Washington Post, the flu pandemic has been fluctuating, with some hospitals receiving nearly four times as many patients with flu symptoms. The CDC stated that with this year’s pandemic, approximately 63 children have died from the flu. People who are very susceptible to the flu include children, and adults over the age of 65.
“I know your guys’ desks seat so many kids during the day, and mainly if we could keep those desks clean, and of course wash your hands after using the restroom and before meals, we could cut down on sickness of students,” said Paulette MacGregor, school nurse. Important ways to help prevent the flu include, sneezing into one’s shoulders, staying hydrated, getting the proper amount of sleep, and washing one’s hands. Though this does not confirm that this will prevent people from catching the flu, it will help fight against severe symptoms. I have been seeing quite a few [flu cases] here at school, in the past, it seems like Paulette MacGregor, school nurse. its been worse, but as far a the community itself, I know its pretty bad out there, and hopefully it’ll get better soon,” said Macgregor. It is not required, but many doctors recommend getting the flu shot. It does not prevent the flu from taking over the body, but if a patient who gets the flu who also received the shot should have lesser symptoms. The flu is one of the most dangerous onsets of diseases the U.S has experienced since the 2014 flu, but doctors and patients work to rid themselves of the illness. As of now, there is no indefinitinte perfection to the flu vaccine, but to avoid the flu, people need to remain as healthy as possible to keep up their daily lives.

dle, years of research make their way into a bloodstream. Once consumed by illnesses like influenza, the modern world now offers a new anti-flu vaccine every year. What used to be deathly diseases are now treatable, but more importantly, they are preventable. Marred by speculation and lies, vaccines have developed an interesting reputation throughout the years. A vaccine is simply defined as a substance that promotes antibodies and immunity against one or many illnesses, but some see the needle as a death sentence. Vaccines were first used in 1797, and they have decreased cases of illness since. Before vaccines, Medium, an online publication, found that 90 percent of people in America had contracted measles by the time they were 15. After the introduction of the measles vaccine, the number of cases dropped by the 100,000’s. Now, measles is easily preventable by vaccine, with only 188 cases recorded in 2015. The fear of vaccines started with a 1998 study that claimed vaccines can cause autism. It was seen in headlines, spread widely through media, whispered among parents who worried for their children. Vaccination rates decreased severely. However, this claim was not based in truth, and was actually retracted by the authors, claiming “no causal link was established between MMR vaccine and autism as the data [was] insufficient”. With more research, it was found that while cases of autism were increasing, there was no correlation
between autism and disease. The study had also been funded by lawyers who were working with anti-vaccine organizations, leading to biased presentation of information Though it has been disproved, the sensationalizing of the original claim spoke louder then the retraction of the study, leaving many uninformed and misguided. According to the CDC, when flu vaccines are well paired with the virus, they can decrease risk of illness by 40-60%. In the United States, the flu kills and average of 36,000 people per year; what parent wouldn’t want to decrease their child’s chance of becoming a part of this statistic? The temporary fever or ache that sometimes accompanies a vaccine is a small price to pay. When it comes to a parent’s role in vaccinations, the biggest threat is not the sicknesses themselves, but a lack of information. In the years that vaccines have been used, there have been thousands of studies that support vaccines; there is a retracted study that claims that they are harmful. Every parent has the right to their children’s health, and in this case, the best decision is found in the research. The Marvel movie franchise expands with their new action film Black Panther, led by the newbie Creed director Ryan Coogler. The film marks 17 on Marvel’s growing film list, and will be the last Marvel movie to be released before the (somewhat) concluding Avengers: Infinity War. Black Panther is stocked full of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars including Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa or Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan as the villain N’Jadaka or “Killmonger”, Lupita Nyong’o as the undercover Nakia, Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, and many other notable actors. A quick synopsis (for the very few who may not know) of the film is that the transition of power from the now dead Wakandan king to T’Challa is challenged by a new foe, and he must join forces with Captain America: Civil War’s C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and some willing friends to take down those who threaten his country. This film was without a doubt one of the few Marvel movies I feel as though I could watch multiple times and still have that new, fresh suspense and excitement as the first time. Between the star-

studded cast, there are no unnecessary characters--each character has their own purpose and meaning. Boseman, just as his other movies, floored me again in his way of delving deeply into his character. After watching the film, I honestly cannot imagine anyone else even being close to matching his portrayal as the comic character. The same goes for the other characters, as Jordan has a way of speech that is truly intimidating and truthfully made me teeth-grindingly mad at his villainous portrayal. As for the soundtrack, this movie has one of the best original songs I have ever heard in any movie. As a fan of movies that have famous musicians make the soundtrack of their movie, I also feel like this movie had the most connection between song and movie and each song I honestly listen to on the daily. With A-list artists such as the Weekend and Kendrick Lamar, the song pack a contemporary rap vibe. Originally, I did not think that the producers would include the songs in the film, or if they did that it would be at the wrong time and end up being cheesy. However, they managed to incorporate them really well and I loved it.
The costume department of this movie should get major kudos for their astonishing outfits. Every character had a distinct style, all featuring native African accents. They also managed to make rural outfits futuristic—reinforcing that high tech feel of the movie back into the outfits. Looking at this movie from afar, it was a great addition to the Marvel Universe and overall an entertaining film. However, there is one seemingly minor flaw I have to point out. There are a multitude of distinct lines, or something a character says at an important time, in the movie that were very poor and when should have had a serious vibe instead made me laugh. Seriously writers, it is not that hard to look at what you write and think about the audience’s perspective. Other than that however, I honestly have no other marks for this film. Well done Marvel. population is at risk for Malaria. In 2013 there were almost 200 million cases with an estimated 584,000 deaths. It’s epidemic is concentrated mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is curable, if caught and treated promptly, but because it is so big in countries with less resources, unfortunately the fatality rate is higher due to lack of medical attention. However, since 2010, there has been a 29 percent decline in deaths by malaria after increased prevention and control measures taken.

Should those with mental illness be allowed to own firearms?
Guns and mental illness
SARAH WEISS, A JUNIOR
“I’d say it depends on the type of mental illness, cause obviously, like, there’s degrees of mental illness; there’s somewhere you’re obviously not going to be safe around guns, and I feel like it should be limited then.”
Maja Peirce and Morgan Reimer take a look at what can be done to keep the mentally troubled from causing harm to themselves and others.
BROKEN MINDS SHATTERED LIVES \ SARA WINDOM
M
ENTAL Illness has become one of the leading factors citizens blame gun violence on within the nation. “It’s hard to be a student in high school these days because you’re constantly looking over your shoulder. You never know what to expect when you go to school that day,” said Anya Holding, a junior. Despite the fear that has come with recent events involving violence in schools, it is not the largest issue that the nation is combating regarding gun violence. Every year, less than one percent of the gun related homicides are due to mental illness. Meanwhile, suicide deaths with the help of firearms are the main cause of gun related deaths. “I think a big issue is that two thirds of gun deaths in the United States are suicides which means that there's a bigger issue with people killing themselves then there is people killing other people. That’s a big example of problems with mental health and depression. So I do think that we should focus more on mental health personally,” said Colin Saliba, a junior. Under Federal law, anybody of 18 years or older can purchase a gun, if they have not been pronounced mentally defective or committed to a mental institution and passed their background check. In the years between 1998 and 2014, the FBI declined 16,669 possible gun buyers because a adjudication concerning their mental health in their background check.
Only about 1.4% of approximately 1.2 million background checks ended in refutation. Mental illness, however, does not only appear in adults but also children and teenagers. Those who are younger in age still need to be given attention and help, which can be difficult because they spend a majority of time at school and the parents may not know the half of what is happening in the adolescent’s head. “We train teachers to pay attention to your staff, to your students. I personally believe that if a teacher takes the time to get to know their students, they can look you in the face and know when things are off today. Maybe it’s not mental illness, but they’re just going through a hard time, so we can help them,” said Dr. Bebee, the school principal. According to Giffords Law Center, Arizona does not require a background check prior to the exchange and/or purchase of a firearm, or require the firearm dealers to own a state license. Along the lines of this and many other alarming laws, Arizona is ranked as one of the worst gun control states in the country. Many solutions have been suggested to resolve this conflict but the population has yet to agree on a resolution. “I think everyone should work on their mental health because it can easily slip,” said Chase Kirby, a junior. With careful consideration, the nation could help improve overall mental health and decrease some of the violence that has been rising within our society.
OPINION
KASSIDY WHEELER Gun violence is far more serious in the United States compared to other developed countries. The Second Amendment prevents infringement upon citizens rights to bear arms, but with the occurrence of more mass shootings, there has been a debate on whether to limit the second amendment rights of the mentally ill. Those who have a major mental disorder should not be allowed to own or purchase firearms. The reason for this is not because the majority of people with mental illnesses are violent, but it is to prevent a small percentage of individuals who may be susceptible to violent behavior from harming themselves or others. According to a study done by Grant Duwe, who has a Ph.D. in Criminology, and is the Director of Research and Evaluation for the Minnesota Department of Corrections, at least 59 percent of the 185 public mass shootings in the United States from 1900 to 2017 were conducted by people who were diagnosed with severe mental disorders. However, only onethird of people who have committed mass shootings in the United States received mental health assistance. This leads to a larger issue of a treatment gap, and evidence that the United States has an issue of not assisting the mentally ill with the necessary care programs and treatment methods. The myth that mentally ill people are naturally violent is false, but sometimes people with severe mental illnesses, like schizophrenia, tend to be at risk for violent behavior. A study done by the Swanson Center stated that men who have schizophrenia are three to five times more likely to be at risk for violent behavior. This is not the fault of the mentally ill person by any means, but their brain is unfortunately wired to have hallucinations, delusions, confused thoughts and speech patterns, or concentration issues. People who develop these dilemmas should not have any need to have a firearm that could potentially take their own life or the life of another person. If self-defense is the issue, and the mental illness that someone has is that serious, they should be in the care and support of someone who will watch over them and be able to defend them, be their friend, and help them in times of distress. In all mass shootings there is only one constant, and that is that a gun is present. Prohibiting people who have a serious mental illness to purchase guns will not solve America’s gun problem, but it is a small place to start in order to pass other legislation and gun laws to ensure nation wide safety from gun violence. If we fail to even attempt to change the current circumstances of gun violence, we become complicit with the bloodshed of innocents.
BRIANNA TIPTON, A SOPHOMORE
“They really shouldn’t because there’s so many different things they can do, whether it’s harming them or harming others.”
People who develop these dilemmas should not have any need to have a firearm that could potentially take their own life or the life of another person.
NATHAN FERRY, A SENIOR
“I do not believe that people with mental illnesses should have guns. If they have a mental illness, than they are mentally unstable to protect themselves or others if they have one.”

Ready Player One takes place in dystopian 2045, where a virtual reality video game called the Oasis has taken over the lives of nearly every civilian. When the public is informed of the Oasis creator’s death, and how he left an easter egg where its finder will be the new owner of the game, it sends society into a free for all. Years pass, but when the protagonist, Wade Watts or “Parzival” in the Oasis, finds a lead towards the egg, the world sets out to find him, and some to kill him. One thing that stuck with me before even watching the film was how much of a lack of starpower there was from the get go. With this movie having the potential of being a legendary blockbuster, it was surprising to me how the only actor that I actually knew was T.J. Miller, intrigue APRIL 2018 staff writer

READY PLAYER ONE who starred in Deadpool, Cloverfield, and TV show Silicon Valley. Miller is just a side character, with main character, Parzival, played by Tye Sheridan and Art3mis (Artemis), played by Olivia Cooke. Sheridan is noticeable from X-Men: Apocalypse, and Cooke from Ouija, but apart from those films, the two actors have no major accomplishments in the film or TV industry. The lack of starpower, however, did no foul on the quality of the acting or film itself. In fact, the actors in this film have jump started their career with how talented they were in the film. An interesting fact about the film that some may not know is that it is not just animation from an animated movie standpoint, but rather each of the actors seen in the Oasis are acting in 3D motion capture. This means they each wear a bodysuit with targets on them and act out the scenes as they normally would, but computer generated images or CGI around them they use the tracking the computers pick up from the targets and animated them into a scene.
This takes extreme practice and lots of retakes to get everything to look just right-3D motion capture is meant to look like reality. Because of this, the movie is meant to be seen in 3D, or even better IMAX 3D. I have been fortunate enough to see the movie twice, once in IMAX 3D and once in regular digital. In IMAX 3D, you see the film as it was intended, and it feels like the audience is truly in the Oasis. There are things I notice in 3D that I could not in regular-- the amount of detail they put into this film is astonishing. Something else I thoroughly enjoyed in this movie was how nostalgic it was. No, I was not born in the ‘80s, but I love the pop culture from that decade, and the entire movie is practically based on ‘80s references. From the soundtrack to the script to each plot point, everything has a retro theme to it because the creator of the Oasis, James Halliday played by Mark Rylance, was born in the decade and was obsessed with its culture. Honestly it made the whole movie more enjoyable because
without it, the film may have been too futuristic yet lacking any charm. When it comes to the negatives, I have one and one alone. I remember first seeing the original trailer and loving it, however I quickly pointed out the film’s demise, including any virtual reality game/movie out there. Directors, video game creators, and anyone working with virtual reality always forget one key point-objects exist in the real world: you cannot have virtual reality on the same plane as Earth because people would run into buildings, into traffic, anything. Also, if it is an alternate dimension to earth, then it would have to be scaled the same, which is never the case. Ready Player One is definitely a good time, and a must see for video game fans, 80s kids, or anyone ready for a two hour CGI thrill ride. Olivia’s Opinion: 2045, a.k.a. the year of everyone becoming cross eyed or blind.

ROM designer handbags, to work clothes, to clothing for teens and children, Gold Mine Thrift Shop has a wide range of finds, relying only on donated items. Located in the center of Cave Creek, the Gold Mine has been a collection point for many relief products. The shop rarely ever throws anything away, keeping most everything for anyone who might need it. They also raise funds for over 27 charities and try to help anyone they possibly can in need. Roots of the beloved thrift store trace back to the Good Shepherd of the Hills parish in 1947, where the store was originally housed. The church first started as a mission outpost, but it was the only one in town at the time, later turning into so much more. Turning 70 years old this year, the stores’ revenue grew to $150,000 per year. “Seeing all the different kinds of people and items that came through the store, you’ve seen everything if you have worked at a thrift store,” Preston Woolsey, a former employee. The thrift shop is filled with dedicated employees and has high reviews online, with many say-
ing how much they love the store, how great the environment is, and how happy they were when they left. “I’ve only been to it once, but it was such a cool place. They had so much stuff to look at and I really liked it a lot. At first I walked in thinking I wasn’t going to find anything worth finding but I found so much,” said Jordan Bean, a junior. Accepting donations of all kinds, the shop is filled with all types of clothing, household items, art, bedding, books, cookware, electronics, hats, games and puzzles. “Going into the store is kind of a bargain and almost like a treasure hunt. You go in thinking you won’t get anything, and eventually you come out with a lot more things than you bargained for,” said Bean. Many buyers are attracted to the store for its inexpensive prices. “It’s such a cool place to go if you don’t want to blow a bunch of money, there are so many things you can find and it just gives off a bunch of good vibes. All the volunteers who work there are always so nice, kind and willing to help with anything. They always have positive attitudes,” said Madison Monoscalo, a junior. Should apps and social media sell user information?
With the rise of social media, there has come a lack of
PRIVACY PRIVACYPOLICY POLICY By ANNIE SOGAARD g staff writer
Whether it is through shows like Black Mirror or by researching and creating elaborate conspiracy theories, this generation has come to somehow revel in all things creepy or mysterious. One of which is the idea that FBI special agents are watching them through their computers or internet history. It has been turned into countless memes on Twitter, musing about an FBI agent coaching them through selfies or saying “bless you” after someone sneezes. Looking at it on the more serious side, people swear up and down that their computers or phones somehow display advertisements for things they had only mentioned in “real life” conversation, or that their smart speakers like Google Home or Alexa will turn on unprovoked during conversations about serious government affairs. “At first, I was one of those people that didn’t really take it seriously,” said Steve Bebee, principal. “But one day, my wife and I were having a conversation in the living room about a bike she wanted, and her computer was open. About 20 minutes later, she went onto her computer and immediately saw advertisements for the same bike. So, yes, now I have tape covering my camera and microphone on my computer.” The FBI does, in fact, have the capability to use wiretaps on people’s phones or computers and listen to and monitor them. However, unless there is evidence pointing to someone being a terrorist or serious felon, they absolutely do not wiretap you. It is actually directly addressed in a statement on their official website; “wiretapping is one of the FBI’s most sensitive techniques and is strictly controlled by federal statutes. It is used infrequently, and only to combat terrorism and the most serious crimes.” In fact, there is a strict protocol to be followed if wiretapping is to be used for an investigation. Under Title 18, U.S. Code, Section 2516, all law enforcement officers are required to establish probable cause that the wiretaps may provide evidence of a felony being committed. Even after probable cause has been adequately determined, a judge still must approve using the wiretaps and closely monitor how it is being used. If an agent were to install wiretaps without following the strict protocol, it would actually be considered a serious violation of federal law. However, that doesn’t mean privacy is guar-

There is no place outside of judicial reach.” With a lot of technology used today, privacy vanquishes without being given a second thought. When downloading apps, if the permissions are not read carefully, they can gain the ability to use the phone’s cameras, microphones, location services and internet activity and sell advertisements. It is the same case with smart TVs or home speakers, which have microphones and sometimes a camera. When Samsung’s smart TV was released, the company itself warned customers not to discuss private information in a close proximity to the TV. “Often times they’re just hearing parts of our everyday lives that they don’t need to hear, and it just becomes an invasion of privacy,” said Devin Dorough, a sophomore. Besides staying away from the combination of heavy fabrics and dark colors, graduation outfits should resemble your best self. If bold and daring, maybe try wearing a bright color, such as red. Bright colors stand out beneath navy grad gowns and can help break up the bagginess of the look. Vendors such as Precious Sauces and The Jojoba Beef Company unpacked and sold their goods every Saturday, running on good vibrations and positivity. “I started this market after I went on a trip to Kauai and there was such a sense of family at the farmers markets there. Supporting and encouraging the local youth has proved to be a priority for CordovaBenson, as local students have participated in the market as well. “I got involved through mutual friends, and I’m really glad I’ve been able to play there. It’s pretty relaxed and you can tell everyone is having a good time,” said Carter Homan, a junior and piano player at the market. With the plethora of vendors and talents, many students have found the market to be a standout weekend event. “Farmers markets are always really interesting and fun, and this was no different. There’s something about getting a bunch of people together for a market like this that you can’t really find anywhere else,” said Lydia Meredith, a senior. While the market has come to a close for the season, it has reached out to members of the community and offered experiences and products that will leave an impact until its next arrival.

Directing brothers Anthony and Joe Russo lead the third installment in the Marvel’s The Avengers film series, Avengers: Infinity War. Infinity War takes place after every Marvel movie before it, at the pinnacle of conflict within the universe. Thanos, seen as the most powerful being in the universe, is coming to steal the six Infinity Stones in hopes to use them to carry out his evil plans. Marvel characters then team up in an epic group to attempt to take down the purveyor of the downfall of life as they know it. Having directed both of the other Avengers films, the Russo brother’s cohesive and consistent vision and style is seen throughout Infinity War as it is in the others. This film in particular had a major challenge--trying to fit in upwards of 30 significant characters. I think the Russos did all they could to even out the screen time of the different characters, and cleverly split the main characters into multiple distinct groups as to allow as many characters into one shot as possible. There is no lack of good acting in Infinity War. I had high hopes coming into the movie since I was already familiar with each actor from previous films, and was not disappointed from an acting

recently liked image. Imagine how websites and apps sell people items; based on images they have liked or bought in the past. Some of these ads for clothing stores or Amazon purchases are real, but some ads can be very deceptive. Every once in awhile people could receive a “congratulations” ad saying all they have to do is fill out their address and credit card information to win a prize. Though it could potentially be real, it is most likely a trap to steal information. Recently, Facebook has had some alarming facts recorded by CBS news about selling information based on statuses. They claim it is based on users’ demographics, location, interests, and behaviors. This is found off of the ads they click, what “consumers” share, what apps and websites they use and more. Though the suspicion of not knowing how much these websites know is increasing at an alarming rate, it can be researched on how to access personal data files. The safest way to avoid this is not to believe in every ad that floats to the surface of the page. Be aware, smart, and conscious of what is going on with the technology at our fingertips. If apps continue to take over everyone’s technology, people’s private information will be on display for everyone to see.

With every text sent, picture liked, item posted, received and searched, the media continues to become part of who each person is on the Internet. In this day and age, it can be difficult to tell whether someone is being safe online, even when they claim to have done nothing wrong. With everything people send online, it becomes a piece of their “digital self,” which could be concerning for some future aspects. Although the world may not realize it, every little piece of technology could be secretly watched upon, which includes ordering items off of sites and searching for answers in the search bar. Businesses make more money every time someone sees an ad and purchases themselves, which resulted in people sharing and/or liking something they saw online. Millions of people use the Internet every day, especially for purchasing items they want or need. When advertisers use their own ads for websites, they are playing to the needs of the viewers. This should not be allowed to happen, because it gives businesses an unhealthy advantage. That is why people always get pop-up ads when they are on websites, and it almost always relates to something they have “liked” on an app or bought recently. This could be considered an invasion of privacy because of these pop-up ads. As society looks deeper into how they sell information, it almost always leads back to a

standpoint. The only acting that I was unsure about was that of Josh Brolin and his character Thanos. He, in my opinion, is the most normal, yet horrible villain there has ever been in the Marvel Universe from a film standpoint. Thanos’s character makes the viewer both understand and feel for him yet also want him to be defeated for how horrible he is. I am actually glad that some catastrophe happened in the film. One thing that Marvel has hesitated to do, due to possible fan outbreak and lack of attendance at future Marvel films, is to do anything in finality. They stray away from killing off any characters or destroying anything special permanently, so they do semi-permanently bad things as to cause conflict, yet they never have anything bad happen that will stay that way. Infinity War differed, as it had some heart crushing events happen that even new Marvel fans knew were final. With incredible CGI and facial tracking technology, Infinity War paves the way to how far technology in movies can go. However, the extensive amount of animation may have have been to distract the viewer from the bad aspects of the film. The most prominent aspect being the Scarlet Witch’s negligence by screenwriters. honestly the most powerful character in the immediate Marvel universe. Every time they give her screen time, she destroys the enemy faster than anyone else. Wanda is hardly seen in the film, perhaps due to most of the screen time given to more popular characters. The other big problem I have with the film is the ending. Marvel has never had a bigger cop out to pull audiences in for the next movie than the end of Infinity War. Unlike everyone else in the theater who was crying, I sighed and crossed my arms. It is no lie that this Infinity War was legendary, and by my third time of watching it I realized how close the 2000s Marvel movie franchise is pulling to an end, and how desperate Marvel is for viewers. Overall, anyone who likes action movies should watch this epic throwdown, but if you are the type who cuts deep down into movies and their individual aspects like me, you may be slightly disappointed. Olivia’s Opinion: Someone had to spend at least two years just editing Thanos’s chin. Think about that. MAY 2018 intrigue
