Paul Wernes’s Fall Portfolio, 2021
Travel Editor, Staff Writer
Editing Effects If I am being honest, I didn’t do much editing. When there were mistakes in stories I would just change them myselves and not make notes. I felt that it went faster for me because half of the time people would not make an effort to change my suggestions. It helped me keep on track with my page because I wasn’t waiting on everyone to change things. I prefer doing everything myself because the stories end up being the way I want them to be. Although that isn’t the purpose of Newspaper, it makes my job a lot easier. Unless half of the story is missing up until production day, I will wait for students to finish the stories because they still need to make the effort. I didn’t like writing stories for people unless I knew it would not end up done. This year differed because I made suggestions instead of just doing the work for people. Doing work for people brought up a major challenge. My workload throughout the month was more than usual because I was doing a lot for other people. Although during that time period it felt like a lot, it helped decrease the amount of time I spent on production day. Most of the mistakes that I would find in stories would be major mistakes. The structure of stories were often off and the stories didn’t flow well. This is a big reason why I decided to fix things myself. It could have taken many tries to fix the mistakes if the writers did them. Although it is a learning opportunity, it makes my life a lot easier. Structure should be the easiest thing if writers would just plan out their stories and get inter-
DOING DESIgnS Best Desinged Page The November issue is the page the I am most proud of. Although I didn’t technically build it, I came up with the majority of the ideas. Mr Adamson came up with the idea of spliting the plan but that is it. This is the first page that I felt accomplished making because I didn’t ask for a lot of help unless there was something that had to do with Photoshop. The stories that are also on the page are great stories which ties the page together.
Worst Desinged Page The September/October Issue has by far my worst issue this semster. It was hard to remember what did what on InDesign. I was relearning all of the tools so it was hard to be creative. My stories were also weak sauce which made my page not so strong. The stories were about random topics and I didn’t like the design becasue it was too basic.
I feel that I have grown a lot since last year in InDesign. Overall I know way more than I did last year. Our September/ October Issue felt like a review of all of the information that I learned from last year. I quickly remembered how to do everything and someone I knew more than I did before. I think I taught myself how to do the majority of the things I know. I didn’t think that was possible because InDesign was a foriegn program to me. I have learned the most when it comes to the basics. I can do most of the things needed on my own now which is very helpful. The main thing that I would like more help with is Photoshop. I think knowing how to use it will give Cooper more time to do the major things with the paper. I don’t know the basics. I know I probably should but I have never been comfortable with it.
Wholesome Writing This piece of writing is my favorite story of all time. I have always wanted to write about ocean pollution because it is becoming a huge issue around the world. Spreading the word about the amount of garbage in the oceans made me feel good. I had an easy time writing it because there was a lot of research online that helped me explain what was going on in the world. My original story was about Green Guilt which I was not a fan of so I asked to write about ocean pollution. I was already behind on the story because I asked about a week into the issue. I worked hard in order to complete this story on time. Getting interviews were difficult because not many people are passionate about recycling and protecting the oceans. Writing about a topic that has plenty of research definetely helped the process go faster. There were statiscics about how much trash was being put into the ocean which is the main thing that I talked about. I am happy with what this final version ended up looking like. It is an important topic to disscuss beacuse the world needs to know about what our oceans look like. I am specifically happy with all of the facts that I included because it puts in perspective how bad the oceans are.
Legendary Leading I think that getting the staff more involved on production day will make them feel more apart of the final paper. In previous years I would edit stories and make headlines. It seems like they come too soon and we aren’t ready for them to make edits. I personally will try and get them to make edits and headlines when I am not done with the design, that way I don’t have to stress about the easy stuff. Almost all of the staff members don’t do their stories right away and always procrastinate. If the deadlines are coming up for super easy stories like MOS and sidebars I will nag on them everyday until they do it. This has worked best for me. Even though I can sound like a (badword), it needs to be done in order to get my page complete. I don’t like waiting on people especially when they can control whether it gets done or not. I think that it is more important to be respected when being an editor because people will know that you take your job seriously and will help you out by completing assignments. I honestly hate being a leader because I would much rather chill and be on my phone all class. Being an editor makes me more responsible as a person which has literally helped me out so much. My GPA has gone up a lot since I have taken newspaper. I feel that I should be getting paid to do this work because I doww too much but I guess i’ll take the easy A on my transcript. The reason why the leader wolf is in the back is because having a view over everyone allows you too see what is going on.
