History of Video Game Consoles By: Morgan Hansen

In 1958, William Higinbotham and Robert Dvorak created the first one player interactive game called „Tennis for Two.‟ They made this in a laboratory using technology used for analysing missiles.

In 1967, Ralph Baer designed the first video game able to be played on the television screen. With this console he created a “chase game.” This game included two different color squares which two players could chase one another across the screen with. This console was named the Brown Box.

After the Brown Box, Magnavox was inspired to make the Magnavox Odyssey. This was the first commercial video game console. This console did not become very popular because of the false rumor going around that the Odyssey only worked on Magnavox televisions.

Atari created a game in 1975 to play in your own home. “Pong.” Before Pong, only arcade games were available. This started a business of converting arcade games to video games, in the 70‟s and 80‟s. In 1976, Warner bought them for $28.

In 1995, SEGA was outsold by the Sony Playstation.

NINTENDO developed the Nintendo64 in 1996. This was the last console that required cartridges. They were more expensive to produce but the cartridges load faster than CD-ROM games and it eliminated the need for memory cards.

In 2001, Sega decided to withdraw from the market and Microsoft took its place with the Xbox. Around Christmas in 2005, Nintendo came out with the Wii, as well as Microsoft came out with the Xbox 360. The launch of the Sony Playstation 3 was delayed.

In 2007, Sony finally launched the Playstation 3. It is presently the bestselling console.

The life of a violent gamer

All over the internet it seems to say that violent video games can turn you vioent and desensitize you to violence. There are a lot of studies done on this link between violence and violent games. However, there are so many studies on the link between violence and video games and they all use different methods to measure aggression that there is no liable way to know which is accurate So, the rumour that say video games can make you violent later on in life is false and will stay that way until a study of this is proven and accurately measured. There is plenty of proof that video games in general can make u mad but there is no proof of games desensitizing us from violence. The only real link between aggression and video games depends on people’s lives outside of gamng, personality traits or mental diseases. If someone were to have family probems or poor health such as obesity they may be more likely to have a higher evel of aggression and they may get very aggressive while playing games. A big reason behind violent video games making someone aggressive may also have to do with practise and the amount of time parents let there children play. These games are meant to be more difficult and confusing and if one is told to stop playing before they even learn how to use the controls. That can ead to being frustrated and maybe even depressed. Practise makes perfect and if you are not allowed to practise a child may be mad at how low his or her skill level at this game is. If anything needs to be done to help kids be less vioent, let them play there games and don’t worry about the outcome.

How do video games make it to the top ten most sold list? The main components to a successfully marketed game are attention to detail, a good trailer for the game and most importantly a great story line. Halo3 for example has an amazing trailer to catch your attention. The trailer is the main character (master chief) picking up his helmet in the middle of a fight. He runs and shoots and lays down cover but there are a group of brutes (enemy aliens) about to attack him so he jumps out of cover and it goes black screen. The trailer makes you wonder what is going to happen next. And also, in the halo games you never see master chiefs real face, only his helmet. A great story line to a game is probably the most important part in a good game. Call of duty games are all based on wars and for any history junky or little kid who likes to bother people online these games will be successful. halo 3â€&#x;s story line is about one person making a difference in the world and saving the human race. For any sci-fi obsessed person this is the perfect game. these games do attract more scifi and history junkies but they also incorporate other things into these games that others can relate to. If you want to make a best selling game you must without a doubt pay close attention to detail depending on what kind of game it is. For shooting games, if a gun is in real life and in the game the guns power must be realistic. If the game is not meant to be realistic then its understandable if people can jump ten feet high. The main point is that realism of games depends on what type of game it is. and with all of these incorporated into a game it is sure to be a good one and maybe even make it on the top ten most sold games of all time
