JOURNEY TO THE TOURNEY

SPLIT SEASON

After going 10-8 in the fall, in the always competitive Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC), Midland advanced to the GPAC Semifinals and then punched its ticket to the final site with an Opening Round sweep of (RV) Mayville State University. The win improved the team’s record to 12-9 on the season. The Warriors have played six of the teams at the final site with wins over currently-ranked No. 6 Missouri Baptist and No. 16 Dordt.

Like many teams this season, Midland competed in the fall and spring semesters. The Warriors began their season back on September 5th at the 2020 Warrior Invitational in Fremont, Nebraska. They faced a pair of tournament teams in Missouri Baptist and Grand View, going 1-1 on their home court. Midland then played a full 16-match conference slate, going 9-7. This spring they were the fifth-seed the GPAC Tournament and advanced to the semifinals. They beat Dordt in four sets in the firstround and then fell to eventual champion, and No. 1 nationally ranked, Jamestown in four sets. Midland earned their spot in Sioux City with a sweep of Mayville State.

BACK WHERE WE BELONG After a year absence from the NAIA Championship, Midland is back in the tournament for the seventh time in eight years under head coach Paul Giesselmann. The Warriors have reached the final site each time they’ve been a part of the tournament field and twice they have advanced to the National Semifinals (2016 and 2018).

FLORES

MOREHOUSE

NATIONAL TOURNAMENT HISTORY The Warriors are making their seventh appearance in eight seasons at the final site. All seven trips have been under Coach Giesselmann who took over the program in 2010. In the history of the tournament, Midland is 19-11 overall and has advanced out of pool play five times. Since 2013, Midland has the 6th most wins in the tournament.

HIATT

FINDING THE BALANCE The Warriors have enjoyed a balanced offense this season with three players averaging 2.7 kills per set or better. Junior outside hitter Taliyah Flores is the team’s go-to weapon on the pin with 288 kills on the year (3.6/set). Seniors Maggie Hiatt and Sydney Morehouse follow with 249 and 217 total kills, respectively. Hiatt has solidified her role on the outside after spending time at middle blocker and right side hitter throughout her career. Morehouse provides a spark in the middle and leads the team with a .246 hitting percentage.

STEADY DEFENSE Midland’s defense has been steady all year long with senior libero Jaisa Russell pacing the team in the back court. Russell has compiled 334 digs this season (4.1/set) while providing scrappy coverage and sound serve receive. Taliyah Flores holds her own in the back row as well, averaging 3.29 digs per set after transitioning out of the libero role she held last season. The Warriors average 15.75 digs per set to go along with 1.81 blocks per set.

SETTING THE TABLE The setter position is held by sophomore Hope Leimbach. Leimbach has established herself as one of the top setters in the league and the nation, ranking second in the NAIA is assists per set with 12.95. The sophomore’s decision making is notable and she plays a major role in the balanced success of her offensive weapons. Leimbach’s prowess goes beyond her athletic ability as the setter is an emotional leader on the court, encouraging her teammates and adding a spark to every celebration.

History Midland University’s history is rooted in multiple institutions, each of which has left its mark on the school and on its mascot. Midland College was first located in Atchison, Kansas, where it was founded by German and Swedish immigrants. The first mascot they selected was the “Tigers,” along with the official colors orange and black. The college was relocated to Fremont in 1919, and the mascot was changed to the “Warriors” in recognition of a theme tied more closely to the history of the founders. Luther College later merged with Midland College in 1962 to create Midland Lutheran College. The Luther College “Vikings” sported blue as their school color prior to the merge. For many years, the Warrior mascot was personified through imagery of a Native American Warrior. This was recognized to be a misfit, however, as Midland’s past was actually routed in European ancestry, and just the name “Warriors” was used without any additional icon. Feeling the absence of a living, breathing figure that appropriately represented the school on and off the field, various warrior types were used in short spurts ranging from “Melvin the Midland Monster” from the early 1990’s to Leonidas, a more recent Spartan Warrior. In 2010, amid Midland Lutheran College’s refounding as Midland University, a new icon was created to reflect Midland’s Nordic history, incorporating both the Luther College Viking blue and the Midland Warrior orange and black. This new Nordic Warrior provides a connection to Midland’s heritage while offering a modern symbol of the strength and determination Midland University student-athletes display as Warriors. Throughout Midland University’s proud history, many changes have taken place. Whether you are connected to Midland from the past, the present, or in the years to come, one thing remains the same. The heart of a Warrior is present in all who call Midland their own.

About Midland Founded in 1883, Midland University is a private liberal arts college located in the heart of Fremont, Nebraska and just 20 minutes from Omaha. About 1,400 students from across the map attend Midland University. Nearly 60% of students reside on campus, creating a thick campus community. With a 15:1 student to faculty ratio and an average class size of 20, students have full access to professors who know them by name. Midland University provides a close-knit community for faculty, staff, students, friends, and alumni!

Midland’s Mission Midland University inspires people to learn and lead in the world with purpose.

Midland’s Vision To provide relevant, innovative, and dynamic learning experiences for our students by working from the marketplace back to ensure their career readiness. We strive every day to be relentlessly relevant.

Diversity and Inclusion Midland University takes pride in being one of the most diverse institutions in Nebraska. Nearly one-third of Midland’s students identify themselves as coming from a racial/ethnic background. During the 2019-20 school year, Midland hosted its first-ever “Together We Are Warriors” Equity and Inclusion Summit, an event where 400 students from diverse backgrounds worked together to break down barriers. Midland also hosted the “Together: Bridges Into the Future” Speaker Series that featured five speakers from diverse backgrounds sharing their stories with students and faculty. In September of 2021, the Midland University passed a Resolution of Commitment to Anti-Racist Practices and Policies was unanimously approved by the Midland University Board of Directors. The resolution was created in the belief that all students, faculty, and staff should enjoy a welcoming, open, and safe environment on campus and that diversity, equity, and inclusion are part of Midland’s strengths.

HEAD COACH

COACHES

11

PAUL GIESSELMANN 11TH SEASON • 258-103 at MIDLAND • 485-183 OVERALL Paul Giesselmann has served as Midland University’s head volleyball coach since 2010. Giesselmann has coached the Warriors to a 258-103 overall record, making him the all-time winningest coach in Midland Volleyball history. He also holds program records for most wins in a season (37 in 2013), conference wins in a season (14 in 2016), and single-season winning percentage (.892 in 2015). Under Giesselmann’s guidance, the Warriors have been a top national program while competing in one of the country’s premier volleyball conferences, the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). The Warriors claimed the GPAC Postseason Tournament Championship in both 2013 and 2015 and were the GPAC Regular Season CoChampions in 2016. Midland has been consistently ranked in the NAIA Coaches Poll Top-25 during Giesselmann’s tenure, including a current stretch of 63 straight appearances in the polls (as of December 5, 2018) that dates back to the 2013 preseason poll. Giesselmann led the Warriors to the program’s first National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championship Tournament in that 2013 season, sparking a run of six consecutive appearances from 2013-18. Not only have the Warriors qualified for the NAIA National Tournament, but they’ve had success at the final site as well. Midland has advanced out of pool play five times in six trips to Sioux City, Iowa. The Warriors made runs to the National Semifinals in 2016 and 2018, advanced to the National Quarterfinals in 2013 and 2015, and played in the Round of 16 in 2017. Giesselmann was named the GPAC Coach of the Year in both 2013 and 2015. In addition to on-court success, Giesselmann has cultivated success off of it with his teams winning the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award in eight consecutive seasons (2010-18). Giesselmann took over at Midland after serving as a recruiting coordinator and assistant coach for Creighton University from 2003-09. During his time with the Bluejays, Giesselmann worked heavily with individual on-court training and helped produce the program’s first two All-Americans at the middle blocker position in Kelly Goc and Jessica Hotus. Thanks in part to Giesselmann’s recruiting work, the Bluejays earned seven selections to the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) All-Freshman Team in seven years, which tied for second in the league, and Creighton became one of two schools in league history with multiple All-Freshman team picks in consecutive seasons (2004-05). Prior to his time at Creighton, Giesselmann was the head coach at the College of Saint Mary from 1994-2001. As the all-time winningest coach in CSM program history (227), Giesselmann earned NAIA National Coach of the Year honors in 2000, Region Coach of the Year

honors in 1996, 1999, 2000, and 2001, and Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC) Coach of the Year honors in seven consecutive seasons from 1995-2001. He was also the Omaha WorldHerald Nebraska State College Women’s Coach of the Year in 1999. Giesselmann led the Flames to a No. 2 national ranking in 2001 and to four consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances from 19982001. The Flames advanced to the National Quarterfinals twice (1999, 2001) and to the National Semifinals once (2000). Giesselmann’s CSM squads earned two regional championships, six consecutive MCAC regular-season championships (1996-2001), and seven consecutive MCAC Tournament championships (1995-2001). All eight of his teams at CSM earned AVCA national Team Academic Awards from 19942001. In his head coaching career, Giesselmann has coached 13 Academic All-Americans, 19 All-Americans, 31 All-Region athletes, 32 All-GPAC athletes, 33 All-MCAC athletes, three Region of the Year athletes, five MCAC Player of the Year athletes, and eight NAIA Championship AllTournament Team players. Giesselmann earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education with an Endorsement in health and Physical Education K-12 and an Endorsement in Coaching from Wayne State College in 1988.
