TONIGHT’S MATCHUP

MIDLAND UNIVERSITY (9-8, 8-7 GPAC)

HASTINGS COLLEGE (7-7, 6-6 GPAC)

7:30pm | Friday, November 20 | Wikert Event Center – Fremont, Neb. The Midland University volleyball team makes the return to the Wikert Event Center for their final regular-season Great Plains Athletic Conference match of the season. The Warriors welcome Hastings College in a match which was originally slated for October 7. Midland and Hastings have met once this season with Hastings downing the Warriors in 3-2 fashion. Midland sits at 9-8 overall with an 8-7 mark in the always tough GPAC. The Warriors are looking for a key win this evening with postseason GPAC-Conference implications at stake. Hastings boasts a 7-7 record with a 6-6 mark in the league. Midland ranks second in the conference in kills per set (13.8), assists per set (12.9), services aces per set (1.6) in hitting percentage (.222), while ranking fourth in hitting percentage (.222). The team opened the year by hitting below .211 in each of their first seven matches. Since then the Warriors have hit above .300 in six of their last 10 contests. Individually, sophomore Hope Leimbach has coordinated a balanced offense that has five players averaging at least 2.0 kills per set. Leimbach’s efforts rank her second in the NAIA in assists per set with 11.9. Junior

Taliyah Flores leads the team with 3.5 kills per set—good for third in the GPAC. Senior Jaisa Russell is the team’s leading defender with 265 total digs (4.1 digs/set). Flores follows with 3.4 digs per set while junior Brooke Fredrickson chips in 2.7. Hastings is hitting .211 as a team and leads the GPAC in blocks per set with 2.8. The Broncos have three players that contribute at least 2.0 kills per set. Lucy Skoch paces the team with 3.1 kills per set. Hastings has a pair of setters running the offense in Makenna Asher (6.0 assists/set) and Claira Thede (4.2 assists/set). Amani Monroe registers 1.2 blocks per set while Sydney Mullin and Skoch each contribute 1.1. Backrow defense is highlighted by Ireland Currey’s 4.1 digs per set. The Broncos lead the all-time series 2111. Tonight’s match marks the end of the regular-season for the Warriors as the team will await their seed for the Great Plains Athletics Conference Tournament. The top eight teams in the league earn a spot in the tournament at the conclusion of the regularseason. This year’s GPAC Tournament will take place in the spring with opening rounds set to begin in April

GAME NOTES ABOUT THE BRONCOS Hastings is coming into this week after missing the better part of the previous two weeks due to quarantine. They were rescheduled to play four matches in four days to end the fall beginning with a match at College of Saint Mary on Thursday. They ______ last night and have also announced their Saturday match with Concordia has been canceled. They’ll play Midland tonight and Morningside on Sunday round of the GPAC regular season. Their last match was all the way back on October 31, a loss to Briar Cliff, 2-3. The Broncos are led by second-year head coach, Alex Allard. On the court they rely on senior Lucy Skoch (leader in kills). The senior from Hastings, Nebraska averages 3.1 kills while hitting .264. SPLIT SEASON The NAIA announced prior to the start of the 2020 season that all fall championships would be postponed until the spring of 2021. They left open the possibility of teams and conferences still playing during the fall semester, an option that Midland and the Great Plains Athletic Conference chose to take. The GPAC will play their complete conference schedule this fall with their championships taking place the first semester as well. Teams will then put their seasons on hold as they await a bid to the NAIA Tournament which is set to begin in April. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Once again Midland proved to be standouts in the classroom as well as the court as they earned a 3.68 grade point average last year as a team. Individually 10 student-athletes earned a 3.5 GPA which will earn them the recognition of being an NAIA Scholar Athlete. The NAIA will officially announce scholar team and athlete awards on September 15.

HOMEGROWN TALENT Midland’s 2020 roster features a wealth of talent raised right here in the Husker State. Out of the 20 players on the roster, 18 of them come from Nebraska with the other two coming from nearby Iowa and Missouri. FINDING THE BALANCE Sophomore setter Hope Leimbach has plenty to think about when she’s running the offense, but a lack of fire power isn’t one of them. The Warriors have five players in the mix who are taking consistent swings. Junior Taliyah Flores paces the group with 3.4 kills per set. Senior Maggie Hiatt averages 3.0 and is followed by senior Sydney Morehouse who puts away 2.07 per set. Junior Brooke Fredrickson and freshman Lauryn Samuelson each contribute 2.0 kills per set. GET BACK After missing out on the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in seven years in 2019, the Warriors will be looking to get back to Sioux City this season. Midland will also look to restart a run of being ranked in the NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. Last year their streak of 78 consecutive polls was snapped as they were just outside of being ranked in the postseason poll. This year’s polls will be delayed as a result of the postponement of the national championship.

DON’T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME Due to local health guidelines in response to the ongoing pandemic, we ask that all fans and spectators practice social distancing while inside Wikert Event Center. There are blue exes marked on the bleachers representing six feet distances. Please use these guides when spacing you or your group from others. GPAC TOURNEY OUTLOOK The Great Plains Athletic Conference has not yet announced when the postseason tournament will be played other than it will be in the spring semester before the NAIA Opening Round. The field to help determine the conference qualifiers is set with seedings for teams 5 through 8 still up in the air. Jamestown clinched the regular season title and an automatic berth to the NAIA Opening Round set for April 17. Seeds 2 through 4 are: Northwestern, Concordia, and Dordt. Midland can clinch the 5th-seed with a win tonight. The remaining three teams in the postseason tournament are: Dakota Wesleyan, Hastings, and Morningside. Each team will look to earn a bid to the opening round with a spot in the NAIA National Championship the ultimate goal. The Championship will be held April 27 through May 1, 2021 in Sioux City, Iowa.

COACHING STAFF PAUL GIESSELMANN 11TH SEASON Paul Giesselmann has served as Midland University’s head volleyball coach since 2010. Giesselmann has coached the Warriors to a 227-84 overall record, making him the all-time winningest coach in Midland Volleyball history. He also holds program records for most wins in a season (37 in 2013), conference wins in a season (14 in 2016), and single-season winning percentage (.892 in 2015). Under Giesselmann’s guidance, the Warriors have been a top national program while competing in one of the country’s premier volleyball conferences, the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). The Warriors claimed the GPAC Postseason Tournament Championship in both 2013 and 2015 and were the GPAC Regular Season Co-Champions in 2016.

Midland has been consistently ranked in the NAIA Coaches Poll Top-25 during Giesselmann’s tenure, including a current stretch of 63 straight appearances in the polls (as of December 5, 2018) that dates back to the 2013 preseason poll. Giesselmann led the Warriors to the program’s first National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championship Tournament in that 2013 season, sparking a run of six consecutive appearances from 2013-18. Not only have the Warriors qualified for the NAIA National Tournament, but they’ve had success at the final site as well. Midland has advanced out of pool play five times in six trips to Sioux City, Iowa. The Warriors made runs to then National Semifinals in 2016 and 2018, advanced to the National Quarterfinals in 2013 and 2015, and played in the Round of 16 in 2017. Giesselmann was named the GPAC Coach of the Year in both 2013 and 2015. In addition to on-court success, Giesselmann has cultivated success off of it with his teams winning the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award in eight consecutive seasons (2010-18). Giesselmann took over at Midland after serving as a recruiting coordinator and assistant coach for Creighton University from 2003-09. During his time with the Bluejays, Giesselmann worked heavily with individual on-court training and helped produce the program’s first two All-Americans at the middle blocker position in Kelly Goc and Jessica Hotus. Thanks in part to Giesselmann’s recruiting work, the Bluejays earned seven selections to the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) All-Freshman Team in seven years, which tied for second in the league, and Creighton became one of two schools in league history with multiple AllFreshman team picks in consecutive seasons (2004-05). Prior to his time at Creighton, Giesselmann was the head coach at the College of Saint Mary from 1994-2001. As the all-time winningest coach in CSM program history (227), Giesselmann earned NAIA National Coach of the Year honors in 2000, Region Coach of the Year honors in 1996, 1999, 2000, and 2001, and Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC) Coach of the Year honors in seven consecutive seasons from 1995-2001. He was also the Omaha WorldHerald Nebraska State College Women’s Coach of the Year in 1999.

COACHING STAFF Giesselmann led the Flames to a No. 2 national ranking in 2001 and to four consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances from 1998-2001. The Flames advanced to the National Quarterfinals twice (1999, 2001) and to the National Semifinals once (2000). Giesselmann’s CSM squads earned two regional championships, six consecutive MCAC regular season championships (1996-2001) and seven consecutive MCAC Tournament championships (19952001). All eight of his teams at CSM earned AVCA national Team Academic Awards from 19942001. In his head coaching career, Giesselmann has coached 13 Academic All-Americans, 19 AllAmericans, 31 All-Region athletes, 32 All-GPAC athletes, 33 All-MCAC athletes, three Region of the Year athletes, five MCAC Player of the Year athletes, and eight NAIA Championship AllTournament Team players. Giesselmann earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education with an Endorsement in health and Physical Education K-12 and an Endorsement in Coaching from Wayne State College in 1988. He and his wife, Dr. Paige Groppe, have three children; twin boys Hunter and Garret (both former Midland golfers), and daughter Ansley. The Giesselmann’s reside in Fremont.
