GAME NOTES GAME DAY PREVIEW Concordia University comes to town tonight to take on Midland University for a pair of Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) matchups. This will be the second meeting this season between the two squads after each school opened conference play against the other back on November 10 in Seward. In the first meeting on the women’s side, Midland came away with a commanding 9179 win. Lexis Haase led the Warriors in scoring with 24 points while four others eclipsed double-digits in the road win. Kennedy Darner had 18 points off the bench while Makenna Sullivan had 17, Lexi Kraft had 14, and Katy Gathje added 10. Concordia’s women’s team was led by Taysha Rushton in the first game. She had 23 points while Taylor Cockerill added 17. Those two continue to lead the way for the Bulldogs with Cockerill averaging 15.4 per game and Rushton scoring 13.5 per outing. On the men’s side, Concordia led wire-to-wire in the first meeting this season. The Bulldogs cruised to an 82-55 win on their home court behind a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures and 11 different players registering at least 2 points. Midland was led by their bench in the first game with Kyle Castille and Emanuel Bryson leading the team with 12 points each. Josh Lambert added 11 points off the bench as well. The Warriors were plagued by turnovers and poor shooting. Carter Kent had a game-high 15 points in the game back in November while Sam Scarpelli and Justin Wiersema both added 12 points each. Wiersema leads the team in scoring this season with an average of 17.4 per game. Kent adds 12.8 points per outing while Gage Smith chips in 11.9.
DON’T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME Due to local health guidelines in response to the ongoing pandemic, we ask that all fans and spectators practice social distancing while inside Wikert Event Center. There are blue exes marked on the bleachers representing six feet distances. Please use these guides when spacing you or your group from others. BALL MAGNET Makenna Sullivan has been a rebounding machine this year, pulling in 115 rebounds so far this season. She is currently ranked 6th in the NAIA in total rebounds and leads the Warriors and the GPAC with an average of 10.5 per game. This season she has posted five double-doubles, including 23 points and 16 rebounds (tie for her career-high) against Morningside on December 5. JOINING DIVISIONS The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has combined divisions this year. In previous seasons, there have been two divisions for the men and women, and with that there were two separate national championship tournaments. This season’s tournaments will be held in Sioux City, Iowa for the women and Kansas City, Missouri for the men.
YOUNG GUNS Coach Drake will be relying an influx of youth in the men’s lineup this year with Colby Tichota and Josh Lambert expected to play significant roles on the front line. Tichota (6’6, 195) and Lambert (6’8, 230) add much needed bulk and size to the Warriors’ paint. SERVING IT UP Sophomore point guard Jake Rueschhoff has been dishing out the dimes this year to a tune of 4.5 assists per game. That mark is second the GPAC and his 45 assists rank 15th in the NAIA this year. He recently tied a careerhigh with 10 assists in the Warriors’ win over Dakota State on November 27. He also leads Midland with 1.7 steals per game. LOOKING AHEAD Midland will have one more road trip before the Christmas Break. The Warriors will travel to The World’s Only Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota this upcoming Saturday to take on Dakota Wesleyan. This will be the first of two meetings between the teams this season. After the break the Midland men will compete in the Bellevue Classic on December 29-30. They’ll face Waldorf and Bellevue on back to back days.

Shawn Gilbert has served as Midland University’s head women’s basketball coach since 2013. In seven seasons, Gilbert has produced a 89-122 record while playing in the always competitive Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). In 2018-19, the Warriors posted a 15-14 overall record, the first winning season under Gilbert and the program’s first since the 2003-04 season (16-13). The Warriors enjoyed a Top-25 national ranking for much of the season as they defeated three ranked opponents along the way. At Midland, Gilbert has coached 21 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Scholar Athletes, including Maddie Egr, who became the first player in program history to earn College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American honors in 2019. All six of Gilbert’s teams have earned NAIA All-Academic team honors. Gilbert came to Midland after serving four seasons (2009-13) as an Administrative Assistant and Video Coordinator at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on Connie Yori’s staff. He also served as the Connie Yori Summer Camp Director. With Gilbert’s help, the Cornhuskers enjoyed their best season in program history in 2009-10 when they went 32-2 overall and 16-2 in conference play, earning them their first Big 12 regular season title. Prior to his time at UNL, Gilbert was the head coach at Mount Mercy College (Iowa) from 2000-2007. Under Gilbert’s guidance, the Mustangs advanced to the Midwest-Classic Conference Tournament championship game in 2005 and 2007. In 2007, the Mustangs enjoyed their best season in program history to that point as they went 21-9 and finished the reason ranked in the Top-25. Gilbert coached three NAIA All-Americans and 11 Academic All-Americans while at MMC. He also produced 15-All-Conference selections and 45 Academic All-Conference players. Before going to MMC, Gilbert was the head coach at Mid Plains Community College in North Platte, Nebraska from 1996-2000. Gilbert was named the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference (NCCAC) Coach of the Year in 2000. Gilbert earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physical and Health Education from the University of Nebraska-Kearney in 1991. He and his wife, Carrie, reside in Omaha and have three children.
