Impressionism Impressionism is a 19th-century art movement that originated among a group of Paris-based artists. The Impressionist painting comprises the work produced between about 1867 and 1886 by a group of artists who shared a set of related approaches and techniques. The brush strokes in Impressionist art are very distinctive. Impressionist painters used large and visible strokes to help portray a dreamy and abstract mood. They created different textures, both visually and physically, with assorted colors layered together. The lighting is often one of the most important focal points in Impressionist painting. Several Impressionist painters devoted entire series of paintings to a single object observed during different times of the day. The principal Impressionist painters were Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley. They worked together, influenced each other, and exhibited together.

Claude Monet, Impression, soleil levant (Impression, Sunrise), 1872, oil on canvas The term impressionism was first used by his work 2

Impressionism in Music Impressionism, in music, is a French movement in the late 19th and early 20th century. It was started by Debussy in reaction to the dramatic and dynamic emotionalism of romantic music, especially that of Wagner. Reflecting the impressionist schools of French painting and letters, Debussy developed a style in which atmosphere and mood take the place of strong emotion or of the story in program music. Claude Debussy (1862-1918) was among the most influential composers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He is considered the founder and leading exponent of musical Impressionism. He used new chord combinations, whole-tone chords, chromatics, and exotic rhythms and scales. In place of the usual harmonic progression, he developed a style in which chords are valued for their individual sonorities rather than for their relations to one another, and dissonances are unprepared and unresolved.

Debussy’s major Works: Preludes L’Apres-midi d’un faune (The Afternoon of a Faun) La Mer (The Sea) Clair de Lune (Moonlight) Opera: Pelleas et Melisande Suite bergamasque, for piano Arabesques for piano Images, Books I & II Syrinx, for solo flute 3

Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune The Afternoon of a Faun Prelude to the “Afternoon of a Faun” is a symphonic poem for orchestra by Claude Debussy. It was first performed in Paris on December1894.

The composition was inspired by the poem L'après-midi d'un faune by Stéphane Mallarmé, and later formed the basis for the ballet Afternoon of a Faun, choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky. It is one of Debussy's most famous works and is considered a turning point in the Music History.

Poetry Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898) was one of the greatest innovators in the history of French poetry. His works, which abound in complex symbols and images, seek to represent states of mind rather than ideas, express moods rather than tell stories. Mallarmé tried to capture that elusive line between dream and awakening that most of us who are not poets are well aware of but are unable to put into words.

Poem and Debussy Mallarmé's eclogue L'Après-midi d'un Faune ("The Afternoon of a Faun") was published in 1876. Debussy first set a poem by Mallarmé to music in 1884, at the age of 22. Three years later, the young composer joined the circle of poets and artists who met at Mallarmé's house every Tuesday night for discussions. Thus he was thoroughly familiar with the poet's style before he began work on his prelude to "The Afternoon of a Faun" in 1892. 4

Composition: The Afternoon of a Faun The work is scored for three flutes, two oboes, cor anglais, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two harps, two crotales and strings.

The main musical themes are introduced by flute. There are slow main theme moves fluidly between 9/8, 6/8 and 12/8 meters in the development. Debussy explored voicing and shading in his orchestration brilliantly, allowing the main melodic cell to move from solo flute to oboe, back to solo flute.

In the first minute of the piece, a bar of complete silence is given mischievously, giving the listener the opportunity to explore the musical quality of negative space within a gentle flowing river of sound.

Cappuccino A lot of people around the world drink coffee and milk. In Italy, people like drinking cappuccino - a coffee and milk with addition of milk foam. Italians never ask for a cappuccino in the evening as Cappuccino is for breakfast only! They find it strange if someone who asks a cappuccino after, or even worse, together with dinner. They really twist their noses when they see someone doing it. Where Did Spaghetti Come From?

Historical sources say that pasta was invented in China hundreds of years ago and that Marco Polo introduced it to Italy in 1292 AD. In fact, there are mentions of other types of pasta like lasagne in Ancient Greece and and vermicelli in medieval !! Italy Spaghetti is an Italian word that literally means “little twines.” “Pasta” is simply the Italian word for “paste” and refers to shaped dough made from semolina flour and water that is cooked in a pot of boiling water. Spaghetti, then, is pasta that is shaped into long, thin, round strands---that look kind of like little twines. 9

Bring 4-6 quarts water to boil, add salt and stir in pasta. Cook for 9-11 minutes until it becomes al-dente. Strain, reserve 1/4 cup pasta water. 2. Meanwhile, in a large pan, fry bacon until crispy. Strain on paper towel. Reserve 2 tablespoons bacon drippings. 3. Add onion and garlic to bacon drippings. Cook until softened, which may take about 3 minutes. Pour wine over onions and garlic. Cook 3 minutes. Put bacon back to the pan. 4. Put pasta into the pan with onion, garlic and bacon. Toss with tongs to coat. Cook until the pasta is hot and let it absorb the sauce for about 1 minute. 5. Beat together eggs and both cheeses. Slowly add a couple of tablespoons of reserved pasta water to temper the eggs. Remove the pasta from the heat. Pour egg mixture over the pasta and toss with tongs constantly until the pasta is coated. Add remaining pasta water if the pasta looks dry or is sticking together. 6. Sprinkle fresh cracked pepper and chopped fresh parsley on the pasta. Toss the pasta once more. Serve immediately. If you are looking for something to serve along side, Fried Stuffed Zucchini Blossoms and green salad make the perfect accompaniments to this dish.
