-Part One-
I’ve heard it said that death comes too soon or too late. For years our society has been trying to make sure it doesn’t come too soon. Fight to the bitter end, do whatever it takes to get one more day. That is an intimate decision and one that only the person involved can make. But at what price? What FairHoPe does is allow everything to happen as it should. Like natural childbirth but on the other end of life. It is amazing, no, make that profound as to what can happen when we allow life happen as it should, keeping the person at home and a involved with life even though the end may seem close. FairHoPe’s purpose is to assist…not speed up or slow down the natural rhythm of life. Just comfort and assist with the natural cycle of life. Several years ago, in the Spring, a young woman became engaged. What a joy for her mom. So many things to do. It was so exciting as they planned the wedding. The mom reminisced about when she was planning her own wedding with her now gone husband. As June arrived plans were in full swing and the September wedding was in sight. Then something happened that in most people’s eyes would have ruined everything. Yet, what happened turned out to be one of the most memorable wedding ever witnessed by those present. -Part TwoIn Part One of this three part story, we read how a mother and daughter were immersed in the daughter’s wedding, planned for early September. But now things are about to change. By early June mom was tiring very easily. After several doctor visits, the mom broke the news to her daughter that she had Stage IV cancer. The doctor estimated that she only had a few months of life remaining. The daughter, though stunned, immediately decided to postpone her wedding allowing everyone to focus on her mother. She felt that her mom’s situation was much more urgent and important than the wedding. Jan absolutely refused reasoning that her life is coming to an end but that her daughter’s was just beginning. Each tried to put the other first. The daughter relented and kept the wedding date as planned. The family knew of FairHoPe’s compassion so Jan was placed on service. This allowed her to be cared for at home and to continue helping with the wedding preparations. As early September drew near Jan’s pain level increased. Concern was growing that Jan would not be able to attend the wedding. Or worse, may not live to see her daughter’s wedding. With less than ten days until the wedding Jan was brought to The Pickering House for one of its main purposes ie; symptom management. In this case the symptom was pain. When one of our patient families encounter a problem, the staff at FairHoPe pulls together to try to assist with a solution. In the final installment we will find out how the staff goes to extraordinary measures to insure that with FairHoPe life is lived not simply extended. -ConclusionIn the last two installments we read about how Karen and her mother, Jan, were deeply involved Karen’s wedding plans. Then cancer struck Jan resulting in her eventually being admitted to The Pickering House. There, the staff carefully brought Jan’s pain down to a tolerable level while keeping her fully aware of her surroundings, very important if she were to watch her girl walk down the aisle. Probably the most important duty of a mother on her daughter’s wedding day is to be nearby when needed. And Jan was. Her “home-side” nurse, Katy, accompanied her to the event even assisting with getting Jan ready. Everyone could now focus on the day knowing that medical assistance was right there. Katy sat with the congregation as the Wedding March began. All eyes turned toward the back and were startled to see three people. With sniffles accompanying the music Jan, being escorted on one side by the bride and on the other side by her brother, slowly walked down the aisle. I think that even the church mouse had a tear in his eye as the three slowly approached the altar. She had done it! After the ceremony, Jen laid down in an area prepared by Katy. Even the wedding photographer did what he could to help by working over the weekend preparing all of the photos so that mom could enjoy them at The Pickering House on Monday. Jen went to be with her dad on Wednesday. People often ask staff and volunteers, “How can you do it?” It is refreshing for us to see such an example of love in that the mother was more worried about the daughter and the daughter was more worried about the mom. The mom rested and said that she needed to talk to her dad who was already in Heaven. Jen went to be with her Dad on Wednesday. It was interesting that Mom did everything she could to make her daughter the center of attention, and the daughter did everything she could to make her
the center of attention. To let her live as normally as possible and to experience one of life’s great events, the wedding of a child. Katy was in the congregation, and stayed with Jen morning of the wedding, during, and stayed with her while reception was going on. She was just too tired. That afternoon her and Katy returned to the Pickering House *** Maybe use some of this in the first segment?***She knew I was her daughter’s wedding not hers. She wanted nothing to take away from her daughter’s Big Event, not even her own. Since most of the real work happens in the planning stage, the two of them got to work. First the budget was set, then the guest list was made, the wedding dress and bridesmaid’s dresses were selected, and on and on. The wedding was planned for September. Then the unimaginable happened; a diagnosis of Stage IV cancer!! Now how could the mother listen to her daughter’s hopes, frustrations, successes. And failures in the planning of the wedding when she had her own hopes, frustrations, and fears?

Denise Bauer of FairHoPe Hospice and Palliative Care Honored by LeadingAge Ohio with Visionary Leadership Award of Honor Columbus, Ohio) – Denise Bauer of FairHoPe Hospice and Palliative Care was recently honored with the “Visionary Leadership Award of Honor” from LeadingAge Ohio. The award was presented during the Awards Luncheon as part of the LeadingAge Ohio 2017 Annual Conference and Trade Show. The award honors a LeadingAge Ohio member employee that embodies vision, is an advocate and pioneer in the field, mentors others with inspiration and positivity, makes unique contributions to LeadingAge Ohio and a meaningful impact at state, regional and/or national levels. Bauer has dedicated over 20 years of her career to hospice care and has led FairHoPe Hospice and Palliative Care for over a decade, opening a 12-bed inpatient hospice house in 2007 and establishing a Grief Center in March 2017. She has dedicated over 20 years of her career to hospice care and has been a steadfast supporter of LeadingAge Ohio and its predecessor, the Ohio Hospice & Palliative Care Organization, having served on its Education, Palliative Care, Development and Public Policy Committees. She served on the LeadingAge Ohio Board of Directors and currently serves on its Home Health, Hospice and Home- and Community-Based Services Subcommittee. Bauer has also fostered close relationships in her local community, sitting on committees of the Fairfield Medical Center, the board of Diley Ridge Medical Center, and an active member of the local Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce. “Denise is an asset to our sector,” said Kathryn Brod, President/CEO of LeadingAge Ohio. “LeadingAge Ohio is so pleased to be able to recognize her vision, leadership and character by giving her this award.” “Denise’s commitment, passion and vision for FairHoPe Hospice and Palliative Care is a tremendous asset to our community,” said Joyce Cox, Vice President of FairHoPe. “Our community is a better place because of her vision in helping individuals celebrate life.” Founded in 1937, LeadingAge Ohio is a member driven organization that represents approximately 400 long-term care facilities located in more than 150 Ohio towns and cities, as well as those providing housing services and ancillary health care across a continuum of settings. Through a recent merger with Midwest Care Alliance, LeadingAge Ohio’s members represent home care and hospice services to an even greater degree than ever before. Member organizations are estimated to serve more than 400,000 elderly Ohioans and employ more than 35,000 persons statewide. Members are sponsored by religious, fraternal, private and government organizations committed to providing quality services for their residents and for older persons in the community at large.
