FORM RULES

The materials are white foam core, white paper, and wire. Create a 12 x 8 in rectangular base with 5 inch high walls, leave one end (5x8 side) and top open. Use 5 or 7 elements (line and plane) within the space, and design the negative space within the box. Establish dominant, subdominant, and sub-ordinate relationships of the space.

CONSTRAINTS

-

GOAL

Think about negative space, create an organization that expands the negative volume, activates the negative volume, make it come alive. Use space as a design tool. Use the movement of the axes and the tensions among the surfaces of the planes to activate the space.

all asymmetry no dimensions alike Use line and plane Can be curvilinear and/or rectilinear Make gestural, active and expressive Use all 3 axes Planes and lines should be complementary and should vary in character and proportion

SPACE ANALYSIS 2 STATIC FORM RULES

The materials are white foam core, white paper, and wire. Create a 12 x 8 in rectangular base with 5 inch high walls, leave one end (5x8 side) and top open. Use 5 or 7 static elements (line and plane) within the space, and design the negative space within the box. Establish dominant, subdominant, and sub-ordinate relationships of the space.

PHASE THREE: TRANSLATION GOAL

Our abstract forms will now be translated into a functional space. Choose from one of three design clients to design a beautiful, unique and functional environment. - Nobu Japanese restaurant - Lummi Nation Cultural Exhibition - Nike Soccer Retail Store

MY CLIENT

Nobu Japanese Restaurant

CONSTRAINTS

The design must fit within that space. The walls, floor and ceiling are fixed. The space is 48 feet long, 32 feet wide, and has 20 foot ceilings. The opening to the street is the small end (8 x 5 in). The entrance is the small (32 x 20) face.

FORM RULES

Translate the abstract forms into a functional space. The form studies are to be refined, translated and inspiration for the functional spaces, without losing the energy or dynamics of the original forms. Design 3 different spaces (8x12x5) Refine 3 of your form studies to be more appropriate for the client. Same scale, inch equals 1 foot. White model only: paper, foam core, balsa.

THE PROCESS: RESEARCH

DESIGN

Nobu restaurant contains a neo-Japanese style characterized by natural textures and forms. Nobu’s many restaurants contain various styles, but all incorporate an elegant and energetic yet simplistic interior design. Since Nobu’s food contains influences from all over the world, the design, too, reflects the style not only of Japan but also from many other cultures.

THE PROCESS: CREATION

DESCRIPTION

A naturalistic scale model was created using various papers, paints, woods, and foam core. Care was put into creating a lighted environment with correctly scaled furniture and features. Light features were created using windows and rice lights. The tables and chairs are of painted base wood and granite counter samples. Hardening water solution was used for the waterfall feature, and hot glue and spray glue was used for construction.

CHALLENGES

16

Much searching was required to find the appropriate materials for the design intention. Creating a realistic environment with exact proportions required thorough scrutiny and attention to detail.

RIGHT INTERIOR

LEFT INTERIOR 20

The left wall is made of foam core and velum placed apart from one-another to create diffused and separated light. Stairs flank the back left side to gain access to the upper level. Paper lights inspired by Japanese Toro Nagashi lanterns hang from the ceiling at different heights.

FRONT INTERIOR

The entrance to the restaurant contains a large floating sign in front of an eight-foot waterfall. Customers are guided by ivorycolored paths in and around each table. A long sushi bar extends on the right, lit from underneath and in front of a large fish tank.
