Research Questions • What is the design concept adopted in S11 house? • How do the building code restrictions on the use of salvaged materials in S11 house in order to minimize the impact on environment and human health? • How will the design of S11 house contribute towards sustainability? • How does each of the features act as solution and help in reducing the impact on environment? • Responding to these green elements, what are the design limitations faced when applying in S11 house?

What is a green design elements? • increasing the efficiency of resource use • reducing building impact on human health & the environment • through better sitting, design, construction, operation, maintenance & removal

Building code restrictions • Reclaimed lumber may have a wood grading that is expired or illegible.

• All reclaimed materials should be inspected by a qualified professional and deemed safe prior to use. • Salvaged bricks should always be tested for durability prior to use.

• Old lumber should be used in limited circumstances. • Salvaged materials from older buildings may contain asbestos, which can be extremely hazardous.

• Old lighting fixtures that may contain polychlorinated biphenylsor or mercury.

Materials HOW? • promoting the use of environment-friendly materials • implement proper construction waste management • re-use of recyclables and construction formwork and waste

Old roof tiles & crushed concrete • tiles for gravel fill • concrete reused for backfilling aggregate • no toxic discharges

Old timbers • used for formwork strutting & propping • used for timber flooring & upper decks

Old red clay bricks • used as main feature walls • does not retain heat easily • high acoustic performance

Recycled stonework • used for bathroom, driveway & living areas • obtain from project rejects

Space planning WHY? • achieving indoor air quality, acoustics, visual & thermal comfort HOW? • proper control of air temperature • movement • humidity

Space planning • internal partition walls were removed to promote cross-ventilation • create unobstructed space between the living room & koi pond

Space planning • swimming pool & koi pond located at two extreme north-south ends • provide evaporative cooling • minimizing usage of air-conditioning

Orientation • • • •

WHY? improve energy consumption HOW? minimizing solar heat gain harvesting natural lighting use of renewable energy

Orientation • • • •

design akin to a tree in the hot tropics keep all the existing tree provide natural shade air circulation

Design Limitations • 1. Cost: Sustainable options will cost more • 2. Materials: In terms of both affordability and availability. • 3. Options: They see limitations in colors, fixtures, fabrics, and more. • 4. Time: Going green usually takes time.
