YOU TRAIN AND EMPOWER PEOPLE DR PHETSAMONE, LAO PDR Empowering local people to identify, refer and treat eye diseases remains a mainstay of our work. By training community health workers, clinic support staff and surgeons we’re able to create sustainable change in the countries where we work. Dr Phetsamone shares Fred’s belief in taking eye care to the people, helping those most in need. It’s not uncommon for him to travel for hours to remote and hard to reach villages to treat patients. “Poor families can’t afford to travel to district or provincial hospitals. If we have no mobile service, many more people will be blind.” When there is no electricity at the remote outreach sites, Dr Phetsamone powers the mobile service with his car battery.
“I know that if we didn’t come, people would be blind for the rest of their life.” – Dr Phetsamone
YOU HELP PEOPLE SEE TRUT, VIETNAM
YOU HELP INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIANS SEE WINSTON, AUSTRALIA
Childhood cataract must be treated urgently, before it leads to irreversible blindness.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are three times more likely to go blind than other Australians.
Seven-year-old Trut was going blind from cataract in her left eye. She lives with her mum, Thuyen, in one of the poorest and most isolated regions of Vietnam. “I worry that I will never have enough money to get her eye fixed,” Thuyen said.
63-year-old Winston is a traditional land manager and camel herder in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands, in remote WA. Diagnosed with cataract, and without treatment he went blind in his left eye. His ability to work was near impossible.
After a health worker visited their village and referred Trut to a free outreach screening camp supported by The Fred Hollows Foundation, Trut was diagnosed with cataract. The Foundation has supported Da Nang Eye Hospital for over 20 years, making Trut’s eye surgery possible. When her eye patch was removed the next day, a shy smile appeared – Trut’s sight was restored!

Thank you for helping train surgeons like Dr Phetsamone
“I don’t want to go blind, because then my wife will have to lead me around and I won’t be able to do my job, or see my grandchildren.” Three years after diagnosis Winston heard about The Fred Hollows Foundation’s Intensive Eye Surgery Week. He travelled 800 km on a bus across the Central Australian desert to get treatment. The surgery took 20 minutes and the next day his patches were removed. He grinned and said:
“I’ve been peeking you know, I can see!”
