In a World dominated by Harmony and Discord we are now creating ‘Solutions’! Taking one extreme to another and making ‘one’ is our Solution for 2006. ‘Idyllic’ for example is a complete antidote to the urban rat-race, the rekindling of the rural idyll will be a prominent feature of the season. With an increasingly healthy and youngat-heart older generation – to whom 50 is the new 35 – there is an emphasis on self-sufficiency, self-assertion and finding a new quality of life, represented by an idealized view of country living and in extreme form by the boutique health clinics now appearing in parts of the US. Dreams of thrilling scientific discovery have lost none of their potency as we enter an era of hypersonic air travel and hints of life on Mars. Glimpses of an alternative world abound. NASA has produced and experimental aircraft flying at seven times the speed of sound which could if developed travel from London to Sydney in two hours. So from one perspective, scientific advances are embodied in a merger between high-tech and high fashion. There is no waning in the human love of luxury and opulence and our aspirational desires are personified in sleek, streamlined styling and ultra-sensuous materials such as silk, leather and fur. An abundance of fluorescent brights reflects growing personal confidence, but this is offset by an emphasis on neutral colours, rooting us to the earth and highlighting the continuing need for security and protection. Organic and ancient qualities are combined with futuristic elements in the search for a better quality of life. Other approaches focus on the quest for emotional wellbeing, harking back to a golden age or looking forward to a dynamic, fun filled future.

Bizarre

Expect the unexpected at every turn in this tongue in cheek response to the relentless march of science. In a dazzling display of vaudeville high camp, acrobats swing and dive overhead, while down below slapstick clowns knockabout and juggle and glamorous showgirls somersault atop enchanting circus ponies. Welcome to ‘showtime’ or more precisely ‘showhome’, where weird and wonderful objects, odd juxtapositions of colour and texture and elements of the exotic evoke the Surrealist fantasies of Dali, Magritte and Schiaparelli. The mood is lighthearted and saucy. A throwback to the 30’s and 40’s. Muted and slightly retro, colours range from grey pearl, apple green, lilac and mimosa to redcurrant and midnight blue.

A sense of humour and a touch of vanity...

Reflecting our continuing need for luxury and our obsession with glitz and celebrity, this theme evokes the bygone world of Hollywood superstar of both silver screen and early Technicolour. The scene is both a private retreat and a place that shouts to be put on show, its flamboyance and feminine touches recalling a diva’s dressing room, swathed in overblown retro florals and featuring rhinestone-studded home accessories. However it is also very much a part of the present, taking its cue from the work of American conceptual artist Jeff Koons – a world where funkiness and superficiality have become desirable ends in themselves. This theatrical, kitsch and highly decorative interior look is imbued with a sense of fun and spectacle that makes it ideal for a playground for adults.

Bold uninhibited use of colour in large public spaces. Exciting and Intriguing. Non static virtual zones in a constant state of flux. Liquid Gels. True colours – pure, powerful, strong and energetic. Bright and bold becomes sophisticated. The colours smash into view, striking up differences, quarrelling, seducing and wowing! Yves Klein employed colour to express a sense of mysticism. Klein expressed in his art the obsessive longing he felt for these weightless, limitless spaces beyond the material world. One of Klein’s favorite places for meditation was the basement of a business owned by a friend’s father. To mask the claustrophobic quality of the windowless room, Klein created a false sky by painting the ceiling blue. This marked the first time he created a monochomatic painted surface using the color that symbolized limitless space and spiritual purity for him.

‘Tourism has become perhaps the most popular means for individuals to give themselves the sensation that they have stepped outside the norm, while continuing to move within it’ John Ralston Saul Voltaire’s Bastards: The Dictionary of Reason in the West. Robinson Crusoe written by Daniel Defoe in 1719 and is considered the first novel in the English Language. Young Robinson is from a bourgeois family and has an easy future set out before him, yet his obsession is to flee his comfortable, cosseted, limited surroundings and discover a greater world. The novel is, however, loosely based on the real experiences of a young man who had run away to sea in 1704, asking to be left on a deserted island and retrieved five years later. With a few supplies from the ship, he builds an entire life, (we call that today a LIFESTYLE!) Natural, sculptural, sun, sand and salt-bleached, stained, worn and weathered. Composing forms, sculpting textures, revealing matter.

Juxtaposing cultures. The raw and the refined. Open and up front with ourselves, a quest for answers leads us across distant cliffs and foreshores to discover the innate quality of found elements. Removed from society and carefree, we re-establish an emotional space in which to exist, forging order from chaos. Crafted over beautiful time, we add to our embellishments whenever fresh ideas and new materials come our way. Stone – sea sponge, stone and Styrofoam are naturally polished into rounded forms worthy of ceremony. Cloth – algae-tinted cloth is torn apart and reinterpreted, then reinforced with entwined pieces of driftwood. Shell – deep-dyed matter resurfaces from decorative sculptures in inky shell, tarnished copper and shredded plastic. Rope – timeworn braids are stripped down to reveal hidden hues for iconic jewels and coiled couture.
