Who is John L. Coleman?

L

John Coleman

t. Col. John Lewis Coleman was born in Fulton, N.Y., on Sept. 3, 1938. He attended Lemoyne College and received his BA degree from Siena College. He then received his MBA from Babson College and completed post-graduate work at Catholic University and the College of William and Mary.

John served in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years, retiring in 1983 as a Lt. Colonel. He spent two years in the Republic of South Vietnam and served at numerous posts in Germany and the United States. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal, Army Commendation Medals, the Army Achievement Medal, Army Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross.

Upon retirement from the U.S. Army, he went to work for the Seaboard System Railroad (CSX) in Baltimore, Md., and Jacksonville, Fla. John served in the Sales and Marketing Department, HR, and retired in 2000 as Assistant VP of Corporate Services.

John supported many community organizations in a variety of capacities. He was on the Board of Directors of the Coastline Federal Credit Union, served on several Jacksonville Golf and Country Club committees, and was Past-President of the CSX Employee’s Golf Association.

He was instrumental in the establishment of the North Florida Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation as well as the Northeast Florida CSX Retiree Association, which also support numerous local charities including the John L. Coleman Charity Golf Tournament that benefits Taylor Residences.

John left behind his wife of almost 40 years, Kathy Coleman, who carries on the John L. Coleman Charity Golf Tournament that benefits Taylor Residences.

Taylor receives $37K check continued from page 1 This year’s event, held Sept. 12, 2011, on the beautiful grounds of the Jacksonville Golf & Country Club, offered a host of hole-inone prizes ranging from a Cadillac SRX, Ford Explorer and Ford F-150, donated

by Claude Nolan Cadillac, and Mike Shad Ford, respectively. This year’s event also saw the welcome addition of a few new sponsors, including Baptist Health and Brooks Rehabilitation.

As always, the silent auction table offered a wide selection of memorabilia, gifts and various items from an Apple iPad2 to golf lessons to golf equipment to a 22-inch VIZIO HDTV.

A model to many

T

here is a quote that states, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery, today is a gift.

That is why it’s called the present” and Taylor Home’s newest resident, Catherine Law, 62, is proving this quote true.

Catherine’s inspiring story starts in Bedford, England, where she was born on St. Patrick’s Day from Scottish parents. She grew up with her mother, brother and sister, and learned that opportunities came few and far between—so when she was offered a chance to come to the United States, she took it.

Presidential beginnings In her early 20s, Catherine became President Carter’s press photographer’s nanny. She cared for two children, Keith and Maureen, who were 12 and 6 months old, respectively. When they were old enough to attend school, Maureen and Keith attended the same school, Sidwell Friends School, as current President Obama’s daughters do.

Catherine was always with the children and became quite close with them, but became especially close with Maureen—taking her on weekend trips to England where she would teach her different cultures and experiences in a different country, and even introduced her to Barbie dolls.

Besides taking them to school, Catherine was also responsible for getting the children involved 4

Resident Spotlight in extracurricular activities. Like most of the previous White House children, Maureen took violin. She was taught the Suzuki method, which was to play first and then learn to read music after.

Catherine was so dedicated to making sure Maureen succeeded

that she also took up the violin.

After perfecting “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” Catherine and Maureen, along with Rosalynn and Amy Carter (who were also in the violin group), performed their recital for the President in the White House in front of many dignitaries.

Sailing onward Once Keith and Maureen grew up and started their own lives, Catherine decided it was time to

start a new chapter of her own.

R.J. Woolsey, an Under Secretary of the Navy with four boys, asked Catherine if she would nanny for them, but she decided to join the Navy at age 30 instead. She went in with a focus in dentistry and was sent to boot camp in Orlando, Fla., and then to San Diego for dental school.

After graduating from dental school, Petty Officer Law put on her “dream sheet” that she wanted to be stationed here in Catherine Law Jacksonville to be closer to her sister. As many “dream sheets” work out, she did not get her first choice and was stationed in Camp Pendleton, Calif., at Camp Del Mar for five years. When the second opportunity to be stationed in Jacksonville came, she again did not get her wish and was stationed on the U.S.S. Dixson, right outside of San Diego.

She was stationed there for two years, working as a dental assistant to the sailors. After her 10 years of service in the Navy ended, having travelled all over the United States including California, Illinois, and New York, she was finally able to move to Jacksonville.

Making a comeback Catherine’s story intensifies when she was struck with an illness that

resulted in the loss of her leg. She struggled through this period, and thought life was over when she was no longer able to walk. Even though this was a tragic event, Catherine pushed through. She knew she was a fighter and would come back stronger.

And stronger she did. She found a job at St. Vincent’s Hospital working as a console operator. She concentrated on her career and worked her way up to Chief Operator of Telecommunications.

She spent 16 years at St. Vincent’s and retired just this past February.

Catherine also enjoys several hobbies including fishing, embroidering, and quilting. She has a Yorkie rescue named Ebony that stays by her side.

Catherine is a dynamite person. She has persevered through the ups and downs in life and has been a great model to many people. She continues to stay heavily involved in the community and helping others in need. She uses her machine embroidery and quilting talents to make blankets for chemotherapy patients and emergency pregnancy patients. She also makes bears for the American Heart Association.

Around the Taylor Home community, Catherine intends to make lap blankets for the other residents once she is settled in.

Taylor Residences is lucky to have her land in our family as one of Taylor Home’s newest residences.

The staff are wonderful, caring, expert people and were very helpful for our needing my mom to live in a nursing home. Employees on the move Facility News

J

ust a small way to get to know some of the new faces you will be seeing around. Be sure to say “Hello” and “Welcome” to these new employees when you do see them.

Taylor Home welcomes Nicole Ballantyne as the service coordinator.

Nicole attended the University of North Florida earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. Her role, as service coordinator, is to help housing residents obtain the services they need and want, which in turn will help improve the quality of life for the residents. She enjoys the outdoors, exercising, and spending time with her family.

Taylor Residences would like to introduce Holly Yoder as the new activities director for Taylor Home. Holly is from Shelby, North Carolina, where she has worked in long-term care for 17 years, 11 of them as an activities director. Holly is engaged to be married this November.

Taylor Foundation Services Inc. has named Nikki Lombardo as its new marketing coordinator. Lombardo was previously an account executive at United Parcel Service (UPS) in North Carolina, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) degree, concentrating in marketing, from Western Carolina University (WCU).

She also was a four year letter winner in women’s soccer for WCU.

2011 Annual Employee Continuing the Mission

O

ur employees are the very core of our commitment to provide the highest quality of life for our residents. As you know, it takes a great deal of compassion, hard work, and financing to provide the level of care and service Taylor has become known for—and the Samuel C. Taylor legacy truly lives on and is evident today in the level of dedication and care the employees provide.

We began our capital campaign last year to raise $2,000,000 over the next three years. In 2009 and 2010, our employees pledged $35,000 each year, which provided 8

a huge impact on our fundraising efforts. Their support is greatly appreciated and has been put to work by accounting for almost 10% of the total number of residents subsidized in 2009 and 2010.

To continue this momentum, we are asking our employees again this year to renew pledges and donations to our Continue the Mission campaign. If you are an employee and have not pledged as of yet, please join your fellow co-workers in their dedication to the most benevolent dream of our founding father—to continue providing quality housing options
