After spending much time globetrotting from New York to Milan to Paris to London and back again, Alison came into the offices bursting with a newfound energy for the season’s freshest styles. Read her runway reports to see what’s in store for men’s fashion and decide which new styles you’re looking to incorporate in your own wardrobe in the upcoming months.

While working on this Spring’s grooming report Jeni delved into the variety of ways men can and should be styling their locks. “Although it may be something often forgotten, hair care is just as important for men as women.” she noted. Having just returned from a quick trip to Sttockholm and observing the many men on the streets, she felt just reinforced her belief that a great cut and style can transform an entire look.

Shooting this issue’s cover story and getting the oppurtunity to be in the company of up and coming Andrew Garfield was, “quite fun,” as Kristin said. Being able to get outside the studio and shoot the man who most currently know as Spidey allowed for a fun environment full of lots of laughs. Read more about Garfield’s rise to fame, upcoming projects, and how he landed that hott redhead of a girlfriend we know you’re all lusting after on pages 16-17.

One of the many aspects of Kaleigh’s job that she loves? “People watching,” she says. Always a favorite pastime, it comes as no surprise we put her on streetstyle duty. Hanging out in some of the hippest areas and outside the season’s most anticipated runway shows, you can rely on her street swank wrapups to fil you in on the trends you need to be trying right this minute. For the current accessory trends look to her advice on pages 22- 25. Read on to see how to enhance your wardrobe aside from just apparel. guymag .com

Fashion Week brought the spring/summer 2013 menswear catwalks season to an end with its signature mix of smart East Coast casualwear and more sportswear-led contemporary collections. The key messages confirmed the importance of preppy tailoring and yachting-inspired looks from London, Milan and Paris this season, as well as underscoring the commercial importance of menswear classics, especial y for outerwear. Yellow-tinted buttermilk pales were combined with white to update the neutrals palette for tailoring, while fiery reddish-orange pimento shades emerged as a statement highlight colour for sportswear and fashion suiting, and a range of pastel blues lent preppy casualwear some commercial high-summer appeal. Smart tailored denim, lightweight synthetic fabrics and suede or leather updated classic coats and jackets, with cotton twil and canvas giving casual single-breasted suits a soft-structured feel. Sporting heritage inspired rowing or cricket knits in varying textures as a key item, alongside the knee-length functional short, with sporty influences carrying over into all-over print coordinated separates, panelled constructions and rethought 4-pocket styling for technical outerwear.

The current round of menswear shows drew to a close this week with designers in Paris confirming looks already seen in Milan and London, as well as formulating new trends for the season ahead. The trend for oversized silhouettes and sportswear influences were confirmed by some of the most exaggerated shapes we have seen all season, especial y for casual tees and knitted tops. Get set for a resurgence of XXXL styling hitting the junior end of the market. Elsewhere we saw the casual jacket confirmed as a key item, with classic shapes like the bomber, Harrington and biker all working into the season’s key colour and fabric trends across all market levels. Tailoring was also confirmed as a key trend, with colour, soft 3SBs and the shorts suit all hitting next summer’s fashion radar. Silhouettes may be oversized but that volume puts the emphasis on lightweight fabrics, like sheers and perforated finishes adding a weightless feel to oversized shapes.

Milan

These key messages from the Milan runways saw preppy resort looks and boating influences confirm the mood for sporty casualwear. A palette of rainbow brights looked new, with bold colour clashing and head-to-toe single colour statements working across everything from formal suitings to staples like the biker jacket, the slim tailored pant, and the casual car coat and commuter mac. Silhouettes underwent a sea change too, with boxier cuts and rounded shoulderlines lending a more fashion-forward look to core pieces like the western jacket and the unstructured 2SB. Knitwear took on a new fashionability, with a play on pattern – both printed and constructed – and textural yarn handles, while the classic knitted polo shirt and the preppy twinset were highlighted as key items for the season ahead. london

Sportswear influences, strong color stories and a diverse use of print were the hallmarks of the first round of spring/summer menswear shows as London opened the upcoming 2013 season. There were several strong key messages and clear commercial color stories, not least the importance of authentic American sportswear influences; a trend we can expect to see impacting the junior end of the high street. Shapes were overridingly simple and exaggerated with overscaled elongated proportions hinting at 90s streetwear. Colour and print were used with a confident hand, as vibrant brights and a full spectrum of blues were offset with the calm resonance of sharp white. There were unexpected fabrics in the mix too, from weightless sheers and sports mesh to the cocooning appeal of neoprene and lightweight bonded fabrics. Source: WGSN

Non-permanent color Lasts up to 28 shampoos Blends away grays All-over color from a formula with a fortifying ingredient complex Available for $25,99

Lasts 4-6 weeks (24 shampoos) Easy to use and apply Fades to-tone with no brassiness 5 minute application with natural results. Available for $17.99

So, you’re going a little gray. Want to cover it up? For men covering gray and keeping it looking good between cuts can be a challenge. Roots start to grow about a month after that fresh haircut. We can all agree that this is not a good look. Luckily these days creating a natural look can be tricky but is possible. If you are working from home, there are some fairly good brands at the market to choose from. Try a semi-permanent color. It wil prevent you from having to touch up the roots on a regular basis. Clariol Natural Instincts for Men and Just for men work great! There are also several quick and inexpensive options available to men in the salon. The best product is Redken for Men Color Camo. The service only takes about 10 to 15 minutes. American Crew’s precision Blend is another excellent service. Both options last about six weeks and fade without brassiness. If you want to take care of those few little grey hairs yourself, it’s easy. Of course the most effective way is gonna be to just pluck them. Get a mirror or get someone to help you. If you don’t want to pluck, use some mascara that closely matches your natural hair color. Some folks, I have heard, wil even color gray hair strands with a magic marker. If all else fails, put a lid on it.

cover star

“ To come out of this industry unscathed, to be good to be pure and to be nice. To be nice is the ultimate goal.” Wise words from 28 year old mega-star, Andrew Garfield. Though on his was to super-stardom with the recent release of The Amazing Spider-man, Garfield is trying to keep is feet planted firmly on the ground. I hope you are taking notes, because this guy is about to show you how it’s done. Garfield is LA-born and British raised, which, probably explains why he has always had a close connection with Hollywood and American films. In Spider-Man he easily fools his audience into believing he is the real Peter Parker; just a skinny, no-name kid, who sees an opportunity to be greater. When asked about his inseicurites about being skinny he simply replied, Peter Parker is skinny and “he beats the crap out of huge guys!” As a kid Garfield needed Spidey in his life saying “He gave me hope. Peter Parker has inspired me to feel stronger, he made me, Andrew, braver. He reassured me that by doing the right thing it’s worth it, it’s worth the struggle, it’s worth the pain, it’s worth even the tears and the bruises and the blood.. He saved my life.” And it looks like the masked hero has done it again for Andrew, leading him to appear on every talk show, every magazine cover, and every guymag .com

girl’s bedroom wall. Though fully aware of his coming fame, this breakthrough star stil speaks like an excited, wide-eyed fan of his own movies. His body jitters and his face turns red when asked about his roles, a reaction matched only when uttering the name of his ultra-sexy girlfriend, Emma Stone. Weather or not this boundless enthusiam lasts through the countless red carpets and photoshoots, Garfield is enjoying being at the top of the food chain, readily taking every new opportunity that presents itself Yes, Garfield cherishes the role of Spider-man, but it is not as if he walks around in a red “Spandex, Spandex, everything Spandex,” suit all the time.. this guy has real style. He is not just a movie-star, but a broadway award winner, a notable philanthropist, a hobby gymnist, and the list goes on. Garfield has many facets and a style that keeps up. Recently while in Tokyo promoting his movie, Garfield sported a denim button up underneath a white and orange striped Alexander McQueen sweater, khakis, and classic boat shoes. He not only managed to look put together but casual and young as well. It didn’t hurt that his equally stylish better half wore a matching orange mini to compliment. Don’t be jealous.

This fashionisto is definitely not afraid of color, and he wears it well. Weather pairing a worn out bomber jacket with slouching turquoise skinny jeans, or fancying it up with a fitted in all the right places, red Balenciaga suit and a sky blue button up, this fresh young thing always looks dapper. After only a few years in the spotlight, Garfiled already has signature looks. While dressing down he wears classic jeans that flatter his slim frame, the usual vintage zip-up hoodie or letterman jacket, and a comfy pair of faded sneakers. For the many red carpets, fundraisers, and press releases Garfield goes for a more formal ensemble in spiffy wingtip kicks with a windowpane or checked tailored suit. His style can be described as college prep boy meets James Bond. Much like friend Ryan Gosling’s playbook swag in Crazy, Stupid, Love. With disheveled hair and a powerful blonde on his arm, this wild and free talent is going places (like the Oscars, Milan Fashion shows, or maybe the top of the world.) In a recent interview Garfield explained that fame is a “fascinating and scary thing.” He goes on to say that Wil Smith and Tom Cruise can handle it, but “I’m not built for it.” Well keep your eyes open and hold on to your hat Andrew, because this is only the beginning (though it looks like you’l be just fine.)

“It’s all a big joke. It’s a ride. It will be whatever it is and I can’t control it.“

Bradley is the classic, all-American man that every lady wants, and he knows it. We caught up with him on his day off in in Bowling-green square, smoking a pipe, and reading the business section of the New York Times. Of course he is smoking a pipe, his go-to accessory is a freaking pocket sqaure. Dapper with a capital ‘D.’ A top-of-class graduate of Brown University, it’s clear Brad knows how to work hard, and as the president of his old frat, it is also clear that he knows how to play hard. He said that his favorite pass time is “Catching rays on the boat while drinking a scotch with my lady.” Spoken like a true socialite. With a style icon of Sinatra, it’s impossible to not look good. Brad says he throws on his colored blazer of the day, an old t-shirt, and he is “ready to make it happen.” Whatever “it” may be.

Currently he works part-time creating ad campaigns, logos, and doing web design for various local firms. He credits his casual cool look to comfort, ease, and observing streetstyle around him. “As a student who is working on the side I have to be able to pull any two items out of my closet and have them be comfortable and stylish in a laid-back sense at the same time.” Well, we think you’ve got it down!

While talking, mostly about his style that is drawn from his mom and her traditional Bahamian dress, we learned that he owns Born, a much talked about art gallery in the neighborhood. We took the party to the lounge-like gallery that features works of young local artists including himself. The undulating motion of his lines along with with the faded, natural colors he uses shows off Silas’s cool and unstressed street style.

Style it casually and be on the lookout for knitted styles incorporating the season’s colors as well as chunky yarns. The presence of the oh-so-popular fedora is stil in full effect but we are seeing a more sartorial take on this style. If yo’re looking to add a bit of sophisticaion to your look the updated fedora is your go to headpiece for the upcoming months. Lastly, if you can style it right, the fitted cap may be for you. Try it with a tailored blazer or jacket or an open-neck shirt to mix formal and casual. When you are in your twenties, there is a chance that you don’t know who you are as a person, let alone how to dress. The key to dressing in your twenties is to experiment. Pull the plug on the logo shirts from high school; your clothing is no longer there to advertise your impeccable sense of style. Head back to basics and add a few core pieces to your closet like a tailored blazer and dress shirts. You’re in your twenties---you’re growing up, so show it. Make the shoulder seams actually hit your shoulder, and no more saggy pants. Time to look more mature.

Being 30 includes the many responsibilities of adulthood. By this time you are mature enough to know the fundamentals of fashion yet young enough to take advice. Invest in a few special items to spice up your wardrobe. This is the time to develop a unique identity with your clothing; maybe it’s a monogrammed shirt or a suit jacket with a patterned lining. Pick your poison, because these details make you. The blue blazer can do double duty at the office and for a night on the town. Define these separates based on your needs, and keep a variety of options to mix and match..

This is the time to purchase some quality pieces without the label. Something you wil wear until you die. This is a time in your life where you can dress up without wearing your work clothes. Keep the lines defined and slightly under dress for every event. Begin building a collection. Whether it be watches or cufflinks, this wil pay your sense of fashion forward when you pass it down to future generations.

George Clooney, 51

Men have a habit of dressing in the style they did at the age they felt most comfortable or successful. Take a look in the mirror and be honest about what you are working with. When looking for clothes, keep a modern attitude and an open mind. Invest in fewer garments, better quality fabrics and classic styles. You wil look timeless rather than look like you are trying too hard to be young and trendy. Don’t forget that accessories are important. Add a stylish pair of glasses or even just a great haircut.

STREET SWANK bold&bright

The men’s spring/summer 2013 runway shows revealed to us that there wil be a variety of colors trending in the upcoming season and among them is that of very colorful brights. While these looks were headed down the runway it seemed so many men were ahead of the times. Kick your wardrobe up a notch by taking a cue from one of these stylish men and invest in a a brightly hued pair of slim trousers or eye-popping blazer. Don’t be afraid to call some attention to yourself by throwing on a bold tint that is out of your standard color range.

Bold blues have been an extra popular choice when it comes to bright color in menswear. Take a cue from this suave gent and toss on a light throwover to bite the chil of early Spring.

Another great shade of blue to add to your wardrobe this spring is aqua. This hue works well on just about every skintone and pairs well with all shades of grey, as seen on this dapper fellow.

The past month or so we’ve seen a surge of camoflauge worn in a variety of ways by many stylish men on the streets. It has ranged from just a touch of the military inspired pattern in a traditional baseball cap to full on jacket and pant combinations in camoflauge. Either way were loving it!

CAMO COMEBACK Go ahead and reach back into your Dad’s closet to grab one of his uniform jackets from his military days. You heard us right, camo is back in style and not just in the traditional sense. As of late were seeing many takes of the pattern from color variations, bleached-out styles, scaled versions, and many more from both runway to streetstyles.

MEDIA Since its debut in 2007, Mad Men has won fifteen Emmys and four Golden Globes. Laced with sexist, cigarette-smoking, ladder-climbing men, this show perfectly conveys the sentiment of the time. Critically acclaimed for its historical authenticity of visual style and costume design, this 1960’s set drama is a fashion-lovers dream thanks to costume designer Janie Bryant.. Fashion was going through a change in the sixties that Bryant has been able to flawlessly capture throughout the 5 seasons. While in the first few seasons it was all about the restricting 3 piece flannel suits (mirroring the uptight state

STYLE REVIEW

of the early sixties) the later seasons show a slight casualization, which you can expect to see more of in the future. The classic look of a mad man is a perfectly tailored black, grey, or brown suit, fedora, and a trench coat. Bryant explains that their ties reflect each individual- the tightness, color, pattern, and shape all assist in creating an image for that particular character.

Mad Men TELEVISION

“ Who wouldn’t want to live in an era of bespoke suiting and column gowns? A time when men wore hats on the way to the office and women wore white gloves on errand runs? ” Leah Bourne

Other accessories that are always on hand are monogrammed belt buckles, collar bars, stringy brimmed fedoras, walking hats, glasses, and so on. Hair product, of course, is always a must. Casual attire is slowly making a debut on the show. It is all about the polo shirt, short-sleeved button-down shirts, cardigan and v-neck sweaters, loafers, flat front shorts, and plaid sports coats. Mad Men’s influence is apparent, plastered all over the runways in every season from Michael Kors to Prada. Perhaps its biggest fan is Banana Republic who has asked Janie Bryant to create a Mad Men capsule collection for the past two seasons. While for the show, Bryant closely follows the specifications of the time period, for Banana, she adheres to the glamour, great tailoring, and panache of the sixties but with modern cuts and fabrication. Even after five seasons the fashion world continues to buzz about these subtly sexy, spot-on ensembles. Bryant explains that she is inspired by three untra-fashionable men: Cary Grant, Steve McQueen, and Terence Stamp. She also finds much inspiration for the looks in vintage clothes at LA costume shops. No matter how she does it, Bryant always sends the audience off on an alluring, mid-century nastalgia trip. guymag .com

FUN. MUSIC

FUN. has hit the music scene with full force this year producing hit after hit. Yet, it’s not just their melodic tunes that are the talk of the town but their style as well. It’s not quite hipster, not quite rocker, and not quite anything else, but then again, these guys aren’t followers. There is about a 50% chance that when the band is in the media they are all three wearing their signature black suits- or at least pieces of it. This slim-fitting Band of Outsiders suit was first purchased for their album cover photo

shoot but quickly became the go-to item for the guys, being worn in their music video for “We are Young”, press shots, weddings (as the groom and guest), and at almost every formal event the group attends. When not in the suit, each member has his own style. Nate Ruess can almost always be seen in a tank with a short-sleeved button up. Andrew Dost is more minimalistic with his duck jackets and plain v-neck t’s. Jack Antonoff is the trendy one and not afraid of color, wearing denim on denim on denim, goofy 90’s caps, and sweaters. Personality glasses, rolled up skinnies, stripes, and suspenders are a commonality amongst the band. Ruess recently said in an interview that they are not making money yet and, therefore, don’t spend money on clothes. For them, style is about getting use out of clothing that is both comfortable and representative of themselves, not neccessarily following the trends of today.

“ We were actually kind of crying, like “Oh my god, I can’t believe we just spent 5,000 dollars on a suit.” I think we all swore to each other that we would make the suits last as much as possible. “ Nate Ruess

“ presented with jagged, uncompromising, individualistic edge... in an overly safe, commercialised cinematic climate is small treasure in itself. “ Sam law

Looper, the latest box office hit featuring Hollywood’s new “it” guy, paints a strikingly realistic portait of what the world might be like in 2044. Director Rian Johnson successfully sets a retro/futuristic scene where organised gangsters control a dystopian Kansas City that has been ravaged by economic meltdown.

Looper MOVIE

Designed around timeless Americana, dust-bowl era, and art deco themes, Joseph Gordon Levitt (who plays the younger and more vibrant Bruce Wil is) is appropriately dressed as a modern 1930’s gangster. A mix somwhere between a teddy boy and the more recent James Dean, Levitt is usually pictured wearing high-rised slacks, a leather jacket, over a plain white t-shirt or a button up with a small tie. The leader of this band of rebels makes a comment on how Levitt’s character based his fashion on old movies that were based on even older movies. The differences between Wil is’s and Levitt’s styles in Looper are ever so subtle and smart. It is obvious they are the same person, yet Wil is, being older, has a less trendy look in jeans, practical boots and worn leather jacket. Though different than the vintage styles worn today, you can expect to this fresh, edgy look to soon take the runways hostage. guymag .com

10 BEST DRESSED The men of Hollywood have whipped out the big guns. And by big guns we mean some of the best sharp suits and badass street style we’ve seen in a while With nice fits, sweet kicks, and stong prints going on, the band “Fun.” is shaping up to be a very strong contender for new best-dressed band. Robert Pattinson proves to be a legit winner, looking like he just, very fashionably, robbed a bank. We mean this as a good thing. As Vampire Diaries Star Ian Somerhalder demonstrates, skinny jeans and a slouchy tee are basically a win-win for any guy of the downtown set. Meanwhile, Matt Bomber proves, once again, that he’s a living Ken doll and Justin Theroux reminds us how badly we need to hit the gym. Last month’s dapper cover boy, Joseph-Gordon Levitt, shows how damn good a three-piece suit can look. And as far as Daniel Craig goes, well this is why he’s Bond.
