Jenna Layton 3/14/2016 Project 3 Rationals One medium I want to create is a sculpture/sign. The sign will include facts about littering and attached will be a garbage can that’s made of different types of litter found on the streets. For example, “1. 9 billion tons of litter ends up in the ocean every year. This is more than the amount of trash generated every year, weighing up to 250 million tons.” (King) After this shocking quote, I will also add a fact about what this is doing to our wildlife and environment. For example, “Animals often step in gum, which can become matted in their fur or feathers, making it difficult for them to move” (Peta.org). Next to these facts will be a garbage can that is made up of many different forms of litter. This garbage can will reveal the odd things one can find on the streets and sidewalks and also promote the fact that you should throw things away in the appropriate receptacles. I hope that the garbage can and facts will also aid in the persuasion of throwing garbage away. I think this is a very good form of displaying my research paper and topic, as this will cover almost everything I have talked about. Another medium I plan to create is a comic using toondoo.com. This comic will involve a few characters that commit the crime of littering and are then taken care of because of The Litterman. The Litterman is a superhero that will warn people about the risks of littering. He is also a man who scolds the characters who commit the crime of littering and in the end makes them clean up the garbage they threw on the ground. I feel this comic will be a fun way to show people that littering is bad and that it has a significant impact on our environment. Putting my research in the form of a comic works well with my research as I have many facts and information about littering that I can place in my comic. For instance, one page will include a drunken male walking along the
Jenna Layton 3/14/2016 street that just so happened to drop his beer bottle on the sidewalk. Next to him will be a kid who thinks, “Who’s going to clean that up?” In the next box will be an action shot of the Litterman himself with the dialogue, “No need to fear! The Litterman is here.” I know kind of cheesy, but that is one of the conventions that comic books posses. Throughout the story, The Litterman will continue to enforce the law and make the litterbugs clean up their mess. The third medium I will create is a commercial about smokers who litter their cigarette butts everywhere. This commercial will act as a “SURGEON GENERALS WARNING” showing multiple different clips of people smoking a cigarette and throwing it out of their car window. Another clip would be of someone simply dropping their cigarette on the concrete and putting it out by stepping on it. As these clips are playing, in the background, I will be talking about littering and why you shouldn’t do it. For example, “Smoking is not only dangerous to your health, but it also causes damage to our environment. With the ban on Cigarette smoking in indoor areas, like malls, restaurants, office building or public arenas, smokers are more likely to light a quick one at their car, leaving the ground as the only convenient ashtray. Studies have shown that cigarette butts are often found in parks, waterways, parking lots, and roadways. These butts also cause harm or death to animals as they think the debris is food. This is an issue because the animal puts their life on the line by possibly running into on-coming traffic and if they ingest it, the animal may even develop some serious internal problems. Litter is also a legal offense as littering cigarettes butts may cause one to get tickets or other fines. If we stop littering, we can greatly reduce personal costs and injury, disease and death to animals, and harm to our beautiful environment. So join us in our attempt to "Smoke out
Jenna Layton 3/14/2016 Litter!" I hope that this commercial will affect this specific audience, as it is an antismoking and antilitter campaign.
