Lorenz Angus 26th Annual Bull Sale

Page 1

LORENZ ANGUS Welcome

Welcome to the 26th edition of our yearling bull sale. As a result of a slightly larger cowherd inventory, and a calf crop that left us with over 10% more male calves than female, we were able to cull more intensely than ever before and still catalogue the largest offering to date. For a multitude of reasons, every calf crop is not equal. Genetics play a role, mother nature has an impact, and sometimes the heifer contemporary is stronger than the bulls. But certain years we have a pen of bulls that are impressive at all ages and stages, it’s fun to watch them grow through the summer, nursing their mothers and they don’t miss a stride through weaning. This has been one of those groups, we see uniformity throughout these bulls, not just among their respective sire groups but as a whole. Good hair is consistent, frame size is uniform with few extremes, adequate bone, ample capacity for fleshing ability, along with crest shape and masculinity. We have a growing freezer beef program, selling beef directly to the consumer for the last 22 years and that program requires nearly as many head as we market annually through our bull sale. Therefore, we have zero reservations about culling the pieces that don’t fit. The steers that end up supplying our beef program include the extreme birthweights, underwhelming performance, and unacceptable structure or foot quality, among any other undesirable traits. Our objective in doing this, is that we assemble a quality set of herd bulls, that will be sound and low maintenance to have a positive impact within their resulting progeny. It goes without saying that more performance is better, when the grassroot level of our industry is paid by the pound, however we also believe that maternal cows, vigorous calves and low maintenance cattle are equally as impactful to our bottom line, as every live calf is quite valuable in todays marketplace. We believe that focusing on the fundamental traits and avoiding extremes will take us down that path.

We will have videos available on DLMS by mid-march as well as carcass scanning results and scrotal measurements. Please reach out to us with any questions you may have or to come and look through the bull pens and cowherd. As always, we look forward to visiting with our customers in the days ahead, it is a privilege for our family to work within the farming and ranching communities.

We hope to see you Tuesday, April 1st.

This guy, didn’t have the easiest go, his mother cast herself on a side hill and we lost her the end of April when this calf was only about 3 months old, he survived on his own as an orphan from that point on and to our surprise fit right in the middle of the pen for both weaning and yearling indexes. His mother was a bigger framed, good uddered young cow, which could describe the majority of the Statement daughters.

A feature bull out of a feature young cow. His Statement dam has a tight udder attachment, she is feminine with a beautiful outline and most importantly she is already very productive at a young age, with this guy turning in a 104 weaning index and a huge 124 yearling index. Few heifer bulls, offer the base width, pin set, big hip and level top that this dude has. His mother was an orphan after we lost her 15-year-old dam and she never had much of a chance to develop but it didn’t slow her down raising this guy and breeding back to have a 370-day calving interval. It was not a very happy day last spring when we found this bulls mother, where she had cast herself on the bedding pile. From the time she calved we said she was the best daughter of Statement we ever had and we stand by that opinion to this day. She had extra frame, extra length, extra rib shape, a feminine wedge shape and an ideal udder. We were able to put this calf onto a nurse cow to get him through the summer but it certainly wasn’t the same as having him at the side of his gorgeous two-year-old dam. This bull has a tremendous hair coat and a good look.

LORENZ ANGUS Reference Sires

A calving ease AI sire that we used exclusively on heifers. He is a son of the popular Final Answer. We are always searching for a heifer friendly sire that offers adequate performance. Best Answer did a great job siring sons with added muscle, base width and wide pin set. Although we have very few daughters, the handful we have were the heaviest heifers weaned off of our 2-year-old cows. Best Answer is a curve bending sire that has something to offer the beef industry.

Jackson has been a walking bull here for the past four years. The bulls have been very well received and they check a lot of boxes in terms of real-world function, they are early maturing with plenty of growth, impressive masculinity, traditional wide muzzled Angus heads, big testicles and tons of hair. The daughters are feminine, their growth curve slows as they mature into moderate, big ribbed cows and the first set of milking daughters last year, weaned a high majority of calves that made the bull sale or replacement heifer pen.

Judgement is an AI sire that we found while on a tour in Montana, we felt for a bull with his mass he was very complete, strong topped and agile. His dam is a broody cow with unmatched mass and rib shape that should add to the maternal merit of Judgement offspring. Both the male and female progeny are very easy doing and soft made with tons of center body capacity. We have the largest group of sons available in Canada and look forward to calving a large group of daughter’s next spring. The progeny to date, look as if Judgement could be a sire to improve foot structure as well.

Statement was a universal sire; he was initially used on heifers in his first breeding season and then moved onto mature cows as he outgrew the heifer pasture. He wasn’t a small birthweight “heifer bull” but he offered true calving ease, as the heifers bred to him calved easily and unassisted. The bulls are long made, with very proud and attractive heads and crests, he stamps them with a great look. The daughters are slightly larger framed with good udders and docility. He bred here for 5 seasons and he had excellent feet until the day we shipped him, we are seeing the foot quality passed down through his daughters. There are more Statement daughters with sons in this years offering than any other sire group of females.
