Ideas Concepts

Not everyone can have a conversation for example babies, because they are under developed they have to learn how to listen and see for them to be able to speak and have a conversation, this grows to a much more structured conversation as they get older. Not only this but taking in consideration people who have disabilities are unable to have what we call a ‘normal’ conversation. People who cannot speak properly are people who are Deaf and Mute. Being Deaf they will not recognize sounds in pronunciation with when they do try and talk then it doesn’t make sense so in this case there has been anther form of communication when having a conversation with someone who is deaf and this is called sign language. This helps people who are deaf have a conversation with other deaf people, but also they can have people who aren’t deaf sign what other people are saying and what is going on.

You can have a conversation with people in your family, friends, peers and any other person who you may not know.

Who can you have a conversation with? Can anyone have a conversation? Is communication between two or more people talking to each other, talking about anything that they want?

What Is a conversation? What can a conversation be about? What form can a conversation be in?

A conversation can be literally about anything such as debates, arguments, topics, subjects, life

A conversation can be shown through type such as letters, emails, text, social networking, video calls such as Skype, drawings, taking pictures, sign language.

Expression We use a lot of expression in our faces that show emotions in different parts of our face such as the eyes and mouth.

Voice the sound produced in a person’s uttered through the mouth, as speech or song.

Body Language These behaviors include, but are not limited to: facial expressions, body posture, gestures, eye movement, touch and the use of space.

Emotion Is how you feel so when you have a conversation with someone it can make you happy, upset, angry, excited, love, hurt

Pictograms are a form of writing that originated in Egypt. From being a child I remember back in school that pictograms helped me when I did writing I want to be able to create my own form of type by using pictograms that can be aimed at children who are in school to help them to learn how to write. Capturing shapes of how we convey emotion/expression in our faces then creating symbols out of the faces and create a conversational poster about a topic of my choice of the two peoples opinions False Expression by this I want to use a false expression overlaid on someone who giving a truth. As you ask someone a question and they will look like they are telling the truth but really they not and this is giving a mixed view to the opposite person who they are talking to.

Break down of Ideas

I want to look in how much we use expression when having a conversation. By this I want to create a photographic/ info graphic piece, showing step by step on how we use are expression when taking and how our facial features work when given an expression.

Books about Expression. Whilst being in the library I found a book about facial expressions and it gave me a lot of knowledge of how human face and skull works. The book has become great for sourcing materials of facial expression, in the introduction Mark Simon who wrote the book created this for reference sources. Early is in his life as an artist he could only draw five different faces so he began to take pictures of different expressions to help him grow as an artist and draw more than he used to. The book its self was the result of all the pictures of all the models that were used in his pictures, he selected different people of all ages that have different lines and bone structures in there face..

Shape of the skull. Using the shape of the skull determines the structure and look of the face and the movement of the jaw that effects how we look when we speak. With in the book it shows you the angles of a skull with it just being bone then with muscle to give an understanding of how bone and muscles define our facial features and expressions.

This artist stood out to me by his very graphic geometrical video of expression, he captures expression of the human face then distorts and exaggerates it in different shapes. It starts in human form using emotion of the expression so when we pull a angry face we look evil and by this graphic video it shows the human face turning into a monster..

Artist who have worked with Expression. Olivier used a French comedian to show all types of expressions and them put them into a set. No matter what language you speak we all use the same facial expressions and his pictures show this. The More expression you give when taking a photo the more you are able to notice it..

Blank Express Stefan Man I discovered Stefan Man from Luton in the UK on Behance, I was searching for artists who did work on expression and how their outcomes on what they have worked on looked like. Stefan’s work stood out to me as I was searching this is because of the simple blank expression on the human face. He has completely blurred out everything on the face that everyone has, making it look like a blank canvas to work on. By using emotion he wanted to hide what we was showing as our emotion on the outside to what we are really feeling on the inside, which many people hide their emotions and you can tell by what they are showing on there face. People could pretend that they are happy on the outside but really on the side they are feeling really sad and down the image with the skulll he wanted to repersent what we are really like beneth their skin. He has used different media to create more a dramtic effect on the imagery and he has kept it in a mono tone colours keeping with the theme of blank expression

sion &Thought. Rutvi Gupta Not only did I discover Stefan on Behance but I also found another artist called Rutvi Gupta. She is a painter and she wanted to express her aspects of thought though expression and projecting above what she is thinkinging about and feeling. The message that she wants to send out she has done it in a non comic way. Not only does this mean things that she likes but also how we imagine what we would like to say to other people whether that is good or bad instead of imagery using type

Martin O’Niel Martin O’Niel is an illustrator who creates hand made collages from a range of international clients in encompassing advertising, design, editorial and book publishing as well as regular contributions to the Uk and Press. I found his work inspiring towards expression because it is showing what peoples intrests are in their mind and how they see it. The media of collage express the person and the illustrations that have been created makes it look bright and colourful that conveys the emotion of the person whether they are happy or sad and it can also show how postive or negative they are thinking.

Kei Meguro Kei is an American artist the title of this piece is ‘Ghost’. Looking for blank expression I came across his work, without the facial features and expression it hides what the face looks it focuses on the shape of the face and hair of which men have on their face not including eyebrows but beards and the hair that they have on their head. The hair makes this piece of design it expresses how the person is so for example one image shows how clean and well presented the hair is and the other shows the hair in a scruffy way. This may indicate what the person is like and how they want to be seen as.

Freedom of Expression.

Baharak Gharebaghi Looking on Pintrest I came across Baharak Gharebaghi who is from Iran and is a Graphic Designer. I was searching for freedom of speak and I came acorss this interesting image, as you can see the image is of a birds cage and there is different colour and shapes of speak bubbles inside it looking as they were trapped, indicating that it is hard to have the right to have freedom of speech, from doing research I have found that in some countries people do not have the right to speak out loud and express who they are and by this it can lead to imprisionment. The different colours in the piece can show different religions and races from different countries that have the problem of freedom of speach.

Amnesty International

Amnesty International is famous for there Graphic imagery that has influenced many designers acorss the world. Freedom of Expression plays a major part in Amnesty International’s work and it is linked to the right to hold opinions and the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion Amnesty has compaigned on behalf of thousands of prisioners who have been imprisoned because of their political, relgious or other conscientously held belifs, orgin, sex, colour, language, naitonal, sexual orientation or other status. Human rights defenders are individuals, groups of people or organizations who promote and protect human rights through peaceful and non-violent means. Their actions depend on, and fuel, freedom of expression.

Colour Emotion & Expression Spencer’s lecture we looked at the Bauhaus and we looked at a man named Johannes Ittens. He taught at the Bauhaus developing a new course which was to teach the students the basics of material, characteristics, composition and colour. He created a booked named ‘The Art of Colour’ which describes the idea of furthering of Adolf Hozels colour wheel. Ittens colour sphere went on to include 12 colours. Looking at Ittens work I want to look at colour and how it is used in emotion and expression.

Colour Meaning There are many different meaning to emotion by using colour and they are all seen in different ways and it is how you see colour as emotion. In my view I see these colours relate in different emotions Red- The colour of red the emotion to me is anger and love. The anger comes from the saying ‘ she said red’ this to me gives me the expression of how a bull sees a red flag and has rage and to me this is sort of the similar way. Also red Is the colour of love and passion, when it comes to valentines day everything you see is more than less red. So there are two sides of the colour red and both can represent two different things. Orange - orange me means relaxed and feeling ok it doesn’t mean to me that you are happy but just calm and collected which is not a bad feeling at all es-

pecially if you are always stressed. Yellow- The colour yellow represents happiness and how we feel inside it makes us feel smile and see everything in a better way. Green- The colour green to me is when you are ill, when you are ill your body makes you feel sick and unwell and sometimes the colour from your face changes and goes really pale and green looking which make you look poorly. Blue- The colour blue represents sadness and I think anyone who would describe the colour blue to feeling represents sadness and coldness. This is because water and ice relate to both crying and being cold meaning ice with snow.

Antony Collins From expression to emotions I found a graphic designer Antony, his work intrigued me because of the blank expression on the face of the person he has used then by overlaying it with colour which shows emotion so for example the red colour expresses Anger and the yellow colour expresses happy. To use expression and emotions colours work very well, especially when creating something with out words his work just show how well it works when do so.

My photography of expression SLR

I created a photo shoot of myself and my model to create some expression shots and some work really well and other do not so from this I can select which ones I want to use to work my symbols on.

Development of Expression

These images I selected four main images that I thought worked the best with the symbol and picked out the colours that I thought worked best with the emotion and expression. Some work stronger than others as you can see on both pages, The darker ones hide the expression that I have created where are the lighter ones also hide it, so the images that are in the middle of colour scale which I would call the medium ones look the strongest. I feel what is missing it type to add to the image because I feel it will make it a stronger piece.

Development of Expression & Colour

As of the previous designs that I have worked on I have used the same process by selecting four main images that I think are the strongest then used colour to create the emotion that works with the expression. As of above the images that are in the middle work the best so this indicates to me that the middle ones are what I am going to use. I am going to develop more by using the symbols with colour and also use typography.

The Images That I have created the symbols on I have got rid of the image and then focused on the symbol on its own and this is where I feel you can notice the symbol strongly and I will be able to work better with by using colour.
