Everyone is familiar with traditional family portraits. Even “traditional” has taken on a new meaning in today’s world of photography - where stiff and posed have left the building and a more candid approach to shooting is the standard. Family portraiture has come a long way, and it’s very art form continues to evolve and grow into something more intimate and personal every day. What if there was another way to document your family? One that truly captured the real, the authentic, the beautiful truth? Each year, I work with families on traditional sessions. They are lovely - some candid, some posed, some silly - and important parts of documenting family over the years. These photos are designed to showcase us the way we want to see ourselves from the outside. Like the JCrew catalog, right? Believe, me - as a mother I know what that’s all about. Over the years, I found myself shooting a certain style of imagery of my own son around the house, at the park in the market. Doing our everyday things. The result was priceless. I didn’t realize it, but I was recording the mundane. The real. The nuances of childhood and family that come and go at such a fleeting pace that you can’t even possibly appreciate them at the time. Yet looking back, you remember them in a way that makes you beg to have just one more day in that time and place. The way your son carried his blanket around everywhere he went. How your daughter loved to watch out the window for the mailman. How there was once a time that both kids would cuddle with you on the couch. If they are still cuddling with you now, one day they won’t. And you’ll want proof they did.
What I find I have grown to treasure more than anything are the artful images of my son that represent the spontaneity that exists only when you are a kid. Kids are SO. SPONTANEOUS. And hilarious. And honest. And precious. Just as they are and as we all are together. So what if I could do that for my clients?

These sessions are not rushed or styled. Each one is designed to be one volume in your family’s encyclopedia of life - and each year you add one more book to the shelf. The images are emotional, real, tender and raw. They will take you back to a time that you wish you could freeze just for one more day.

I believe it is incredibly easy to fall in love with this style of photography simply because it is so authentic, so relaxed. It is a true glimpse into your personal world - the parts that seem unimportant but that become the most treasured over time.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Life Unscripted can be as simple as an in-home portrait session with your young children. Or it can be as momentous as documenting a birth (yes, we have photographed births before!). This kind of coverage has so much flexibility because it really is about how you truly interact. Feel free to make this engagement as formal as you want - or as casual. What’s important is that you and your kids are able to feel uninhibited and be true to yourselves. We ask you not to worry during your session. Let go. Your kids will get dirty. That’s ok. They will sense your level of comfort and take your cues. We want the real smiles, the real laughter, the true connection you have with your kids that is so heart-stopping.
