The Battle of Lexington and Conco The First Battle of the Revolution
On April 19, 1775 about 700 British soldiers made their way to Concord, Massachusetts to take control of a large gun and ammunition cache. As they passed through Lexington
en route to Concord they encountered 77 militiamen armed with buckshot and squirrel guns. As the two sides faced off, a shot was fired. To this day, no one is sure who fired first. This was the first military engagement of the Revolution and it was a Patriot victory. When fellow militiamen from neighboring towns over took the British forces raiding Concord, the British were driven back into Boston with heavy losses.
The Battle of Brooklyn
August 27, 1776 saw the largest battle of the war. The Patriot army was defeated by the British. They were outanked and because they were rooted on the western edge of Long Island this allowed the British to take control of the Port of New York for the remainder of the war. The Patriots later evacuated from Brooklyn to the safety of Manhattan.

The Battle of Trenton On December 26, 1776 the Patriots were victorious in Trenton when they captured the Hessian detachment. The Hessians were German troops hired by the British to fight in the war. This victory “boosted the Patriots’ waning morale and inspired re-enlistments.”

British Surrender at Yorktown October 19, 1781
“When British General Lord Charles Cornwallis and his army surrendered to General George Washington’s American force and its French allies at the Battle of Yorktown on October 19, 1781, it was more than just a military win. The outcome in Yorktown, Virginia marked the conclusion of the last major battle of the American Revolution and the start of a new nation's independence.”
