THESIS RESEARCH PROJECT RMIT INDUSTRIAL DESIGN (HONOURS).
7
The project is trying to create more efficient and environmentally conscious methods in designing toys, by proposing an ‘openended play’ furniture system, that encourages creative and imaginative play for children. Its value is based on the idea of “versatility”, in how the pieces could be integrated into various, limitless approaches to playing.
2016
8
Idea Development: ranging from 2D to 3D schemes, the ideation takes an approach in creating shapes that could be suited to the new material’s capability.
9
KEY CONCEPTS 1. Longevity of Products Usage 2. Modularity / Open-ended Play 3. Toy Furniture / Indoor Playground 4. Environmentally-friendly Material 5. Extended Functionality* *when a child grows up and no longer use the toys, it could be used for other ‘extended’ functions around the house, such as for containers, laundry baskets, decorations . The products’s material could also be donated back to the manufacturer’s company (Woven Image, “Take Back Program”).
10
Woven Image is a company based in Australia designing various products, including Echo Panel, which is widely used as an office divider. “Take Back Program is introduced by the company to reuse uncontaminated Echo Panel products.
11
12
M A T E R I A L E X P E R I M E N T A T I O N is an essential part of this project, emphasising on how to utilise a finished product to become “raw once again and be developed to suit a new purpose.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT, NAFA OBJECT DESIGN.
17
Shelving system developed by taking an architectural-inspired visual and structure. There are no screws and bolts involved in the construction, thus emphasising on the tension and weight-bearing function created by both the fishing lines and metal buttons. “Structure supports Structure is the key tagline for this project.
6 2014
18
ARCHITECTURAL OBJECTS “Structure supports Structure” The concept is based on the repetitive elements found in architectural systems, both from structural and visual point of views.
DESIGN The vertical and horizontal planks are built upright without any glue or screws.
The design takes an approach in repositioning the notion of those repetitions to creates quantities that has better qualities.
Metal Stopper (brass 1 mm) and Fishing Line (Heavyweight) are the crucial components in replacing the classic joinery commonly used in shelving systems. The value of the concept lies strongly on how the vertical and horizontal planks can’t stand individually. They only stand as one assembled piece of shelving.

The concept of the series was based on the idea of Indonesian cuisine, developing recipes and plates that represents the traditional food. KEY CONCEPTS The idea of vertical plating, where the motion of fluidity are applied to each plates and courses, with an objective to enhance the dining experience.

CHILDREN TOYS LEARNING SMALL OBJECTS
Toy car design that emphasises on the placement of its wheels. The design comes to enhance the creative development in young children. “Korgi tries to modify the shape of the cars by changing the groundlevel position of the wheels. The cars are designed to mimic basic shapes in early learning (triangle, rectangle and circle), with a purpose in aiding children to understand the basic concept of primary forms.

Portable and easy to carry around photo projector to facilitate story-telling sessions in Bir, Himachal Pradesh. The idea of having sessions involving volunteers from around the village to share Indian / local related stories to the youths treasuring the culture of their living spaces. This project is focusing on how to facilitate these sessions of local wisdom. The projector is made out of easily sourced material and needed only a few common type batteries. The intended value lies on how the product is expected to be placed and ready to be manufactured by the local people of Bir.

PLAYTHING RE-DESIGN MATERIAL & PROCESS
Chess set design made out of plaster and wood. The design focuses on the study of forms, which starts from developing the facades and contours to be able to demonstrate the “identities” accordingly to each chess pieces. The making process includes creating blue foam moulds with CNC machining and wood carving with Band Saw and Hand Saw.
Chess 2012

The shapes and characteristics of each piece was designed through several shape study and sketch prototyping.

Jarrod Lim Design founded Hinika furniture brand, which produces accessories, furniture, and products for indoor and outdoor.
During the Internship, my roles were:
Design development for future products, both for the studio’s own and commisioned projects. Highly used of 3D modelling with Rhinoceros. Model Making, 1:1 cardboard models, both for ideation and presentation purposes.
