WHO WE ARE

The National Audubon Society is an environmentalist nonprofit dedicated to the protection of American birds. The Society consists of nearly 500 chapters across the United States, each of which is an independent nonprofit affiliated with the national Society.

The Audubon Society was founded in the 19th century to protect birds hunted for their feathers in clothing production. With ample early funding, the Society spread throughout the US, and by its second decade, began to engage in political lobbying at the state and federal levels for environmental protection laws. Though the Society primarily focuses on the establishment of wildlife preserves, political lobbying has remained an important component of its activities and the Society has played a role in passing environmental legislation, including the Endangered Species Act.

OUR MISSION

We protect and advocate for birds through education because we appreciate the crucial role they play in our ecosystem.

15

ROUND ONE LOGOS

For my initial sketches, the key phrases were: wise as an owl, light as a feather, and a tranquil moment. Out of the three camps educational or mindful “camps” was working the best.

17

ROUND ONE

The owls were to obvious as a icon for knowledge. I needed to draw a more generic looking bird.

ROUND ONE

The shields were working the best to show protection. Also the letter A had some potential but needed some refinements.

ROUND ONE

The birds were not working well. They were too childish.

ROUND TWO

For the second round, I focused on birds, feathers, and nests.

25

ROUND TWO

The bird logo’s were working a little bit better. In this round the most potential ones were the shields and the nest as a icon for protection.

ROUND THREE

For this round, I focused on birds, nest and the letter A.

29

ROUND THREE

The birds were more sophisticated but was not representing Audubon’s mission.

The A’s were not working as well. I made them to bird like. There were too many added elements.

ROUND THREE

I tried making some of bird logos in illustrator. The birds did not show anything about protection. My goal was to have all my three words represented in a the final logo.

ROUND FOUR

For this round, I focused on nests, the letter A and shields to show togetherness and protection.

37

ROUND FOUR

In this round, I feel like I was getting closer to creating the right logo for Audubon. The nests were working well, and so was the A in the shields.

ROUND FOUR

The hexagon shield nest were my strongest in this round. I needed to make them feel more like a nest.

The nests needed to be less structured and more organic looking.

ROUND FIVE

For this round, I focused on combining the shields and nest together to show protection for the birds.

47

ROUND FIVE

I refined my shield and nest from the previous round. It still did not look like an actual nest.

ROUND FIVE

After countless attempts trying to sketch a logo, I was still not coming up with a great logo. After watching videos of birds building nest, I feel like I had a better ideas how to execute my nest. I decided I need to try a more hands on approach. I decided to use toothpicks, but after making many attempts it still was not working.

ROUND FIVE

After trying toothpicks I needed to find another way to create a nest. I came up with the idea to use shreds of paper to create the proper shield form. It was finally coming together.

ROUND 5

I brought my images of the nest to the computer and started to refine and add the wordmark to the nest.

I started to incorporate colors into the logo. I wanted to keep the nest in a natural brown color, and have the wordmark pop.

I feel like my nest was not very branch like it was just a bunch of lines. I added more branch like sticks and weaved them together to create more of nest.

LOGO

NEW LOGO

After many attempts to create a logo. I finally created one that represented Audubon’s mission. It had all three key words: appreciation, education and protection. The sticks represented appreciation, the hexagon shield represented protection and education is the A in the center.

SIMILAR LOGOS

I found a variety of logos, that were either birds or shields. The only nest logo I found was nestle.

NEW IDENTITY INTRODUCTION

The Exploratorium’s idea is educational but still being playful. The hand drawn elements connects to a wide range audience. I want to expand my brand into a similar direction.

TYPE SPECS

DFW introduces a typeface and explains why they picked it. Then on the next spread it goes on to show more detail about size and weights.

MAIN ID

The Nueva School uses the whole page when showing the casing of the colors. The main logo colors are the largest and the extended colors are smaller. Which makes it more visually interesting to look at.

LOGO DON’TS

UPS is very clear, what is not allowed to be altered to their logo. There is not only an image but a caption as well.

USE OF IMAGERY

Boeing has a nice structured grid that shows what images you are allowed to use for print materials.

GRID AND WORDMARK PLACEMENT

Vantiv shows the standard for grids and where to place the logo. The grids make it very clear on where things should be placed.
