VILLA FOSCARI ANDREA PALLADIO INTEPRETATIO AND MANIPULATION OF GRID UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND ARCH 401|SPRING 2014 This design project examined students’ ability to document, analyze a precedent and further synthesize the information with personal design attitude. Villa Foscari by Andrea Palladio exemplifies the paragon of symmetry and proportion of architecture that further play on the hierarchy of the space. The diagrams focus on formal analysis of architectrual tectonics, circulation, and spatial hierarchy. Palladio created and manipulated a grid system that further creates a aesthetic proportion and central hierarchy.

SYNTHESIS The goal of this project is to inspire students to synthesize information of both famous architecture and personal interpretation of precedent. From the analysis of Villa Foscari, the recognition of the grid further inspire speculation for the grids to not only act as structural tool, but also fundamental design for basic geometric massing. The result of my investigation consists of “two objects” having a playful converstation after series of manipulation in grids. This new manipulation of the grid allows for two major massings. The rotation of the masings creates a interesting study of thresholds. The open interpretation of program and scale provide creative imagination of the space.

JOHN F. KENNEDY PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY ARCHITECTURE FOLLIES UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN ARCH 552|FALL 2015 One explores the spatial quality and processional experience in the presidential library of John F. Kennedy, designed by I.M Pei. The second part of the design project instigates me to explores the processional experience through the exhibition, the heart of the library. The ambiguous identity of figure ground gives the mind liberty to reconfigure them into objects, in this case: a tapir, the rifle used to assassinate JFK, and the Doomsday Vault that is buried in the landscape.

ORCHESTRATING DEPTH TO THE SYMBOLISM Iteration B

The speculation arrives at dissecting the exhibition procession into anonther layer of depth into the series of procession. The diagrams and models above demonstrate the series of manipulation that arrives at formal studies of depth to the symbolism. Both iterations alter and blur the identity of the exhibition procession, turning them into abstraction of depth. Speculation of exhibition then becomes the architectural follies that are open to imagination and interpretation of individual eyes.

FRONT FACADE: ENTRANCE

FACADE FOR URBAN INFILL CONNECTING URBAN AND NATURE BIO-ARCHITECTURE FORMOSANA SUMMER INTERNSHIP 2014

The summer internship provides workshop opportunities for the student interns. The goal is to design the rear facade of a hotel building in Taipei, Taiwan that can both reduce cost for a physical renovation and serves aesthetic values for the public. The proposed facade draws the connection from the existing front facade by continueing the language of the strips. The forest in the background symbolizes the escape of nature from the constraint of urban context.

The slots punctured through the facade mimic the scale of the brick that is abundant at the site context. The openings not only allows light to enlighten the interior atmosphere, but also encourage people to interact with the facade by looking out int othe world through the playful placement of the brick openings.

LIVING IN THE METROPOLITAN GREEN SPACE AND QUALITY OF LIFE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND|ARCH 402|FALL 2015

The project program challenges students to design a apartment complext for various scales of apartment units: studio, 1 bedroom, and 2 bedroom. Setting across from the site is a green, recreational community space for the community. My design intention encompasses the exploration for maximizing interaction between residents and communities and green space. I introduces the strip of green into the plaza as continuation of the green space across from the street. DESIGN CONCEPT

The acoustic memory of each American president amplifies the progression of history and politics in the United States. The acoustic gallery beneath the mounds broadcast the presidential voices as a “staged conversation involving specific political issues: civil rights, global terrorism, international relations, national defense, education, and environment. The scale and expansion of the mounds indicate the impacts of the political issues and collection of archived voices. The presidential library also invites the community the project their voices toward the other end of the Cumberland River. The interactive broadcast centers surrounding the exhibition acts as the agency to help community participating in the making of acoustic memory.

The adaptive reuse intervention for existing coal power plant in Detroit, MI inspire students to speculate creative activities for the Detroit Community. To transform existing identity of the power plant in the industrial site, the project focus on empowering ENPOWER DETROIT WITH REGENERATIVE AGRICULTRUE Detroit Community with sustainable and regenerative agriculture. The main purpose is to educate local community about both biodiversity and regenerative agriculture. The UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN goal of the project seeks to develop regenerative cycle to further create a network for ARCH 562|WINTER 2016 the Detroit community to participate, interact, and engage.

POWER PROLOGUE

A series of research on agriculture in Michigan reveals the potential for speculation of sustainable and innovative agriculture. The project expand the premise of sustainable agriculture based on research and collaborative process. Ultimately, the integration of urban context and sustainable agriculture will promote concious lifestyle within the Detroit community. The goal is to promtoe community engagement and integrate all scales of participation and interaction on site.

The Entrepreneur Center in Dan Hai District gives opportunity for the firm to integrate transportation hub and activities to catalyze the energy on site. The Entrepreneur Center focuses on promoting both green transportion by light rail, bus, and metro system while utilizing the real estate potential at the site to provide local job opportunities. The activities entail grass sliding, water sliding, exterior rock climbing, and bungee jumping.

GRASSHOPPER MANIPULATION UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND ARCH470|SPRING 2014

Students are challenged to create series of objects by manipulating codes in Grasshopper. The series of manipulation and experiment creates a spectrum of forms and objects. For the two series, the exploration for wave morphology developes dynamic and active movement of wave. The study of the form allows for potential in applying grasshopper manipulation on architectual designs.

SPIROGRAPH

The group created a spirograph, a machine exploring varying rotational motions. The hierarchy within the circular motions provide opportunities to investigate the logistic movement of individual parts. Each Surface is tightly attached to the other with face joints, rotating the joints- the mortise and tenon joints. The stability of frame was able to withold the weight of the spirograph, allowing children to directly interact with the circular motion by grabbing on and rotating the handle
