PROJECT SUMMARY THE MAIN GOAL FOR THIS PROJECT WAS TO EXAMINE THE POTENTIAL FOR LANDSCAPE AND GEOLOGICAL FORCES TO GENERATE NEW DESIGN TECHNIQUES AND FORMAL STRATEGIES FOR ARCHITECTURE. FOCUS WAS GIVEN TO ANALYZING HOW THE VARIABLES ASSOCIATED WITH LANDSCAPE AND GEOLOGICAL HISTORY CAN EXPAND HOW WE THINK ABOUT ARCHITECTURE’S RELATIONSHIP TO BELOW THE GROUND AND HOW WE MIGHT EXPOSE WHAT REMAINS UNSEEN.
MAIN ISSUES:
• HOW MIGHT GEOMORPHIC PROCESSES BE USED TO SHAPE AN ARCHITECTURAL INTERVENTION? • HOW MIGHT THE STUDY OF LANDFORM HISTORY AND DYNAMICS SERVE AS A SPRINGBOARD FROM WHICH TO FORMULATE ARCHITECTURE? • HOW MIGHT REVITALIZED IDEAS OF CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALITY RESPOND TO WHAT IS NATURAL AND WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL? • OSCILLATING BETWEEN DEEP TIME OF GEOLOGICAL STRATA AND THE QUOTIDIAN ACTIVITIES OF HUMAN LIFE, HOW MIGHT ARCHITECTS HELP VISUALIZE AND REALIZE THE NEEDS OF A GEOLOGICAL RESEARCHER IN THE DESIGN OF A FIELD STATION?
SITE
THE SITE IS ADJACENT TO PAISLEY CAVES, LOCATED IN THE SUMMER LAKE BASIN NEAR PAISLEY. THIS REGION IS VERY DRY AND RELATIVELY COLD WITH LIMITED GREENERY DUE TO UNFAVORABLE CONDITIONS FOR ORGANIC MATTER. 2 | GEOLOGY FIELD STATION
SITE ANALYSIS | GIS MAPPINGS TEMPERATURE HIGHS 60 °F TO 62 °F
TEMPERATURE LOWS 31 °F TO 32 °F
PRECIPITATION ONLY 9” - 11” ANNUALLY
SOIL ARIDISOL (DESERT SOIL) WHICH IS KNOWN FOR ITS WATER DEFICIENCY, CAUSING LOW CONCENTRATION OF ORGANIC MATTER
PAISLEY CAVES
THE COMPLEX CONTAINS 8 WESTWARD FACING CAVES ON THE HIGHEST SHORELINE OF PLUVIAL LAKE CHEWAUCAN. THE CAVES HAVE ACCUMULATED DIFFERENT KINDS OF TERRESTRIAL SEDIMENTS ACCORDING TO LOREN DAVIS, AN ARCHAEOLOGIST AT OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY. ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE SUGGESTED THAT HUMANS VISITED THE CAVES MULTIPLE TIMES DURING THE LAST GLACIAL PERIOD.

CONCEPT STATEMENT
THIS PROJECT EXPLORES THE POTENTIAL TO UNDERSTAND THE SITE AS A SERIES OF SPLITS OR CRACKS AND HOW ARCHITECTURE CAN APPROPRIATE THESE NATURAL CONDITIONS FOR HUMAN BENEFIT. THE BUILDING IS CONCEIVED AS A SERIES OF PROGRAMMATIC ELEMENTS COMPRESSED AND RELEASED IN RESPONSE TO THE SURROUNDING NATURAL LANDSCAPE PUSHING IN AND OUT. THESE CONCEPTS OF CRACKING AND COMPRESSING ARE OPPORTUNITIES FOR NATURAL LIGHT TO SEEP THROUGH THE SHELL OF THE BUILDING, CREATING LIGHT WELLS THAT BRING IN DAYLIGHT AND PUT THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE ON DISPLAY. THE PUSHING AND PULLING OF THE SITE BEGINS TO ORGANIZE THE PROGRAM, DIVIDING IT INTO ZONES THAT CAN WORK INDEPENDENTLY AS WELL AS TOGETHER WHILE CREATING A DIALOGUE BETWEEN POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE SPACE.

CRACKING AND THE LIGHT SEEPING THROUGH COMPONENT EXPLORATION
THE IDEA OF CRACKING AND ALLOWING LIGHT TO COME INTO THE BUILDING BEGINS TO TAKE FORM THROUGH A SERIES OF MODELS (SHOWN IN THE PREVIOUS PAGE) AND ARE DEVELOPED THROUGH THE STUDY MODEL FOUND ON THE LEFT. THESE COMPONENTS BECOME LIGHT BOXES / RETAINING WALLS THAT ALLOW THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE TO PUSH IN AND BECOME PART OF THE INTERIOR SPACE.

THE OUTDOOR SPACE DEFINED BY THE NEW VISITOR’S CENTER WILL PROVIDE SEATING FOR VISITORS AND RESIDENTS AS WELL AS A PLACE FOR A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES WHEN THE WEATHER IS FAVORABLE. THE SPACE IS VISUALLY LINKED TO THE STREET THROUGH THE TRANSLUCENT GAPS BETWEEN THE BUILDINGS AND TO THE BAY THROUGH THE OPENING BETWEEN THE HISTORICAL MUSEUM AND THE NEW COMMUNITY FUNCTION HALL.

PROJECT SUMMARY
EBEY’S LANDING IS LOCATED ABOUT 50 MILES NORTH OF SEATTLE ON WHIDBEY ISLAND, WHERE A UNIQUE AND VARIED LANDSCAPE OF PRAIRIES, HISTORIC FARMSTEADS, WOODLANDS, SALTWATER BEACHES AND MOUNTAIN VIEWS CAPTIVATE AND INSPIRE BOTH RESIDENTS AND VISITORS ALIKE. EBEY’S LANDING NATIONAL HISTORIC RESERVE WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1978 TO PRESERVE THIS CULTURAL LANDSCAPE, WITH THE HISTORIC TOWN OF COUPEVILLE AT THE HEART OF THE RESERVE. MAIN CHALLENGES: • DESIGN OF A VISITOR’S CENTER THAT CAN SERVE THE NEEDS OF BOTH VISITORS AND RESIDENTS OF THIS CLOSE-KNIT COMMUNITY • SITE SELECTION TO ACHIEVE CLEARLY-STATED INTENTIONS VIEW OF SITE AND HISTORICAL MUSEUM • NEW DESIGN IN A HISTORICAL CONTEXT
CONTEXT
THE SITE CHOSEN IS LOCATED AT THE HEART OF COUPEVILLE WHERE FRONT STREET COMES TO AN END. THE LOCATION OFFERS BEAUTIFUL VIEWS OF THE BAY TO THE NORTH WHERE THE WHARF HOUSING THE CURRENT VISITOR’S CENTER IS LOCATED. THE BLOCK IS SHARED WITH THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM AND THE HISTORICAL ALEXANDER BLOCKHOUSE. GIVEN THE STRONG HISTORICAL CONTEXT OF THIS PART OF TOWN, SPECIAL ATTENTION MUST BE GIVEN TO DESIGN GUIDELINES ESTABLISHED BY COUPEVILLE RESIDENTS AND OFFICIALS WHEN PROPOSING A NEW DESIGN.

CONCEPT
GATHERING SPACE AND VISUAL LINKS
IN PLAN VIEW, THE BUILDING FABRIC ON FRONT STREET BEGINS TO DEFINE THE SPACES BETWEEN THEM AS EITHER SMALL GATHERING SPACES FOR PEOPLE TO PAUSE AND ENJOY OR AS NARROWER “GAPS” WHERE VIEWS OF THE BAY ARE POSSIBLE BUT WHERE THE BAY MAY NOT NECESSARILY BE ACCESSIBLE. THESE TWO ABSTRACTED ELEMENTS BEGIN TO INFORM THE PROGRAM AND BUILDING DESIGN OF THE NEW VISITOR’S CENTER.
16 | EBEY’S LANDING
MAIN CONCEPT/PARTI
THE BUILT STRUCTURES SIT ON THE SITE IN A WAY THAT THEY BEGIN TO DEFINE THE SPACES BETWEEN THEM MUCH LIKE THEY DO ALONG FRONT STREET, YIELDING BOTH INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR SPACES THAT CONNECT OR LINK TO EACH OTHER IN DIFFERENT WAYS TO STRENGTHEN THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND CREATE SPACES FOR GATHERING.
SPATIAL RELATIONSHIP STUDIES: GATHERING SPACES AND VISUAL LINKS
THE PROGRAM INTENDED FOR THE BUILDING AND THE ABSTRACTED ELEMENTS FROM THE BUILDING FABRIC IN FRONT STREET YIELD A SERIES OF SCHEMES FOR SPATIAL LAYOUTS AND THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPACES.
EBEY’S LANDING | 17

SHAPING SUSTAINABILITY: A MASTER PLAN FOR UNIVERSITÉ OMAR BONGO
PROJECT OVERVIEW ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON WERE INVITED BY A.N.G.T. TO TRAVEL TO LIBREVILLE, GABON AND WORK WITH STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITÉ OMAR BONGO TO COLLABORATE IN THE ENVISIONING OF A REDESIGNED CAMPUS WITH A FOCUS ON ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY. THE WEEK-LONG PARTICIPATORY WORKSHOP IN LIBREVILLE, GABON YIELDED DESIGN ALTERNATIVES WITH THE HELP OF GABONESE STUDENTS WHICH WERE THEN REFINED THROUGHOUT THE WINTER TERM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON IN EUGENE.

LIBREVILLE, GABON
COLLABORATIVE WORKSHOP | LIBREVILLE, GABON UNIVERSITÉ OMAR BONGO + UNIVERSITY OF OREGON CONDITION ASSESSMENT
A PHYSICAL TOUR OF THE CAMPUS AIDED US TO ASSESS THE CONDITIONS OF EXISTING ROADS AND BUILDINGS TO DETERMINE WHICH WERE TO BE KEPT (GREEN), COULD BE KEPT OR DEMOLISHED (YELLOW) AND WHICH SHOULD BE DEMOLISHED (RED)
THE DESIGN GAME
AS FACILITATORS, OUR JOB WAS TO GUIDE UOB STUDENTS THROUGH A GAME IN WHICH THEY COULD BUILD OR DEMOLISH WHATEVER AND WHEREVER THEY WANTED ON THEIR CAMPUS BY DRAWING IT ON A MAP. THIS ALLOWED US TO UNDERSTAND THEIR WANTS AND NEEDS AND PROVIDED US WITH THE INITIAL FRAMEWORK FOR OUR GROUP’S MASTER PLAN DESIGN ALTERNATIVE
COMPACT CAMPUS DESIGN ALTERNATIVE MY GROUP’S DESIGN ALTERNATIVE STARTED OUT WITH SOME BASIC RULES: • MEDIUM DEMOLITION (KEEP ALL GREEN AND SOME YELLOW BUILDINGS) • FOCUS ON GREEN OUTDOOR SPACES • NO/LIMITED AUTOMOBILE ACCESS • ADD SOUTHERN ENTRANCE

GRAND BOULEVARD
THE IDEA OF A GRAND BOULEVARD AS THE ENTRANCE AND MAIN ACCESS THROUGH THE UNIVERSITY CREATES A SENSE OF PRIDE AND OWNERSHIP FOR STUDENTS AND GIVES THE CAMPUS THE IMPORTANCE IT DESERVES. A LARGE GREEN MEDIAN LINED WITH TREES FOR SHADING DIMINISHES IMPERMEABLE SURFACES AND PROTECTS PEDESTRIANS FROM THE SUN. 32 | ATELIER GABON: THE MASTER PLAN

GREENSPACE | QUADS
MAIN QUAD THIS MAJOR GREEN SPACE IS THE CENTRAL OPEN GATHERING PLACE FOR THE UNIVERSITY WHERE STUDENTS ARE WELCOME TO STUDY, RELAX, OR PLAY. THIS SPACE BECOMES THE MAJOR NODE AT THE HEART OF CAMPUS TO WHICH THE MAIN BOULEVARD GUIDES VISITORS AND STUDENTS. 34 | ATELIER GABON: THE MASTER PLAN
MAIN QUAD LONG SECTION (ABOVE) THE MAIN QUAD HAS A SLIGHT SLOPE THAT MAKES THIS A GREAT PLACE FOR WATER MANAGEMENT. IT WOULD BE RECOMMENDED TO DESIGN THIS QUAD WITH A WATER GARDEN IN MIND TO SLOW DOWN THE FLOW OF WATER, PURIFY AND DIRECT RUNOFF TO SPECIFIC SPOTS ON CAMPUS.
SOUTHERN QUAD (LEFT) A SMALLER GREEN SPACE IN THE STUDENT HOUSING DISTRICT ANCHORS THE BUILDINGS AS WELL AS ESTABLISHES THE DISTRICT’S IDENTITY BY PROVIDING A MORE INTIMATE OUTDOOR SPACE. ATELIER GABON: THE MASTER PLAN | 35

RECONCILE WITH NATURE
BEAUTIFUL GARDENS BECOME IMPORTANT PLACES AS OCCUPANTS MOVE THROUGH THE BUILDING. THE INTEGRATION OF NATIVE PLANTS INTO THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT SYMBOLIZES GABON’S EFFORTS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF ITS DIVERSE NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS. THE DIAGRAMS ON THE RIGHT SHOW THE SEQUENCE CREATED BY THE GARDENS ON ALL LEVELS.
SENSE OF COMMUNITY
THE GARDENS ALSO SERVE AS NODES FOR OCCUPANTS TO PAUSE AND SOCIALIZE, STUDY, OR RELAX. PROVIDING COMMUNAL SPACES WITHIN THE LIBRARY HELPS STRENGTHEN THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND COMRADERY. THESE CAN ALSO APPLY TO MAIN READING AREAS.
DIGITAL INFORMATION
MAIN CONCEPTS
ACCESS TO THE INTERNET IS CURRENTLY LIMITED TO ONE PLACE ON CAMPUS AND THE SIGNAL IS WEAK AT BEST. THE NEW LIBRARY WILL PROVIDE ACCESS TO COMPUTER WORKSTATIONS WITH INTERNET ACCESS FOR STUDENTS TO STUDY AND DO RESEARCH.

FLEXIBILITY
CAFE
ACTIVITIES CAN EXPAND ALL THE WAY OUT TO THE UNIVERSITY STREET AND EVEN INTERACT WITH THE THEATER ACROSS THE STREET
MEETING ROOMS AUDITORIUM EXHIBITION / MULTI-PURPOSE
SURROUNDED BY ASSEMBLY-TYPE SPACES, THE COURTYARDS SERVE AS FLEX SPACE FOR EVENTS HELD THERE. ADJACENCY AND CONNECTIVITY ALLOW THESE PARTS OF THE PROGRAM TO SPILL OUT INTO THE COURTYARDS.
CLASSROOMS
STUDENTS WAITING TO GO INTO CLASS ON THIS LEVEL CAN ENJOY THE VIEWS OF CAMPUS AND THE CITY FROM THE LOUNGE SEATS IN THE GARDEN. THIS SPACE PROVIDES A PLACE FOR STUDENTS TO SOCIALIZE WITH EACH OTHER.
OUTDOOR MULTIPURPOSE
BY OFFERING A DIRECT CONNECTION TO THE TOP ROOFGARDEN, BOTH OF THESE SPACES CAN BE TRANSFORMED FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF EVENTS AND INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER

MATERIALS THE MATERIALS WERE CHOSEN BASED ON WHAT EACH SYMBOLIZES FOR THE GABONESE AS WE LEARNED FROM OUR CONVERSATIONS WITH THE LOCALS. BUILDERS IN GABON CURRENTLY USE PRIMARILY CONCRETE AND DO NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE VARIOUS SPECIES OF WOOD FOUND IN THEIR TROPICAL RAINFORESTS. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO ENCOURAGE THE USE OF LOCALLY OBTAINED WOOD IN THE COUNTRY.
