Hey Everyone! Hope you enjoy our packed edition of Soundwave interviews, and stories. Leeann and I had a great time there meeting the bands and interviewing them. This month we welcome Freda to our Editorial team as Design Editor. We have worked well together as a team and I have already learnt a lot! Sophie and Luke have also started to design their own articles. We also welcome Vivian and Gemma as writers. It is great to expand our team! We are currently looking for a Public Relations person to run all of our Social Media sites as well as promoting us. Email me for more info if you are interested. Thanks to all the bands that agreed to be interviewed about their Sound wave experience. It was great to meet Bands that I have grew up with as well as newer bands. Meeting Bowling for Soup and Zebrahead was certainly a highlight for me! Next month we focus on Bowling for Soup including my interview with Chris. Keep an eye out for that! So until next time, keep listening to the bands you love! Peace out, Jen @justjenrees

Title: Addicted Length: 3:52 Genre: Pop punk, pop rock Album: No Pads, No Helmets... Just Ballls Release: June 3rd, 2003 Label: Atlantic

A

ddicted is the third single of the debut album No Pads, No Helmets… Just Balls and was released on June 3rd 2003.

The song has an uptempo beat and is about the pain after a breakup. It can also be about unanswered love. Addicted has a famous line that goes “I’m addic, I’m addicted to you” which sounds like “I’m a dick” and because of this radio stations had to edit the song. Addicted was the first song by Simple Plan to reached Top 50. It reached No. 10 on Australia Singles Top 50, No. 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 63 on the Uk Singles Top 75. It’s a popular song and it’s been played a lot live. The fans love it and as an uptempo and loved song worldwide it gets the crowd going, it’s

usually among the first couple of songs to be performed. Music video The music video begins with the band walking down an alley and entering a basement like room looking like some sort of apartment. They are jumping up and down. They are breaking the whole room. - We are destroying everything, says David in the dvd A Big Package For You. Simple Plan’s dear friend Patrick Langlois is seen in the music video like many others and he is sleeping on a couch. Throughout the video big pieces of the ceiling are falling down on him. Fashion The video was released many years ago and it’s shown in the fashion. The young boys have what to me is the typical punk rock band style; long shorts and high socks with a t-shirt. .

Fans comments : Addicted is the song that lead me to SP. I remember stopping dead in my tracks the first time I heard it, it seemed to be saying everything I was feeling inside. I raced straight out and bought the cd, playing it over and over again for months. Looking back now, that song still holds painful memories of that particular time in my life, but they are far outweighed by everything else that SP has brought to my life since. - Leeann Rothwell, Australia I love this song like every other one from SP. I like it because it’s rock and it’s very catchy. This song sounds good acoustically too but my favorite is the live version when all the crowd jumps along with SP. I wish one day I will be in that crowd.- @jelenaSP96, 17, Serbia Addicted is in my top 5 SP fav songs. It does take me back to time that I would rather forget as I was Addicted to someone and that did

not work out. It came out just after this time in my life and I was blown away how a band can write a song that explains exactly how I felt. I love singing it still and it is one of my fav songs to see them play live. The film clip is amazing and I really like that Patrick plays a large part in that. - @justjenrees, Australia. I really love Addicted because while I’ve never been in a relationship before, the idea of loving someone so much and it seems that you practically are addicted to them and being around them is really relatable to me, since as a high school student, crushes come and go quite frequently. I also like the connection between an addiction and a relationship by saying your love for them is addicting and you can’t help yourself when you end up thinking about them and wanting them back in your life. - Kelly @imjustakid17, 16, United States I like the song. It’s not the kind of song I skip when it comes on. It used to be one of my favs because of David’s part in the song but now it’s just a good song. - @erikabjork, 22, Sweden Sophie Carlbrant. - @sophiecarlbrant, 21, Sweden

My Soundwave experience started a long time before the first band began to play. It was planned as soon as the last band that would be METALLICA!!!! played in 2013. Leeann and I had it all worked out! However, once GD was announced as headliners, we soon had a few extra’s wanting to come along for the ride. This time we were joined by Jackie and Robyn. The count down seemed never to end…… Finally the day came to pack the car and meet in the city. Well, you could do that, the rest of us had to try and cram everything we needed for 3 days and nights in Melbourne into a small carry on that would weigh less that 7kgs and fly. Leeann and I have a habit of becoming lost in Melbourne I would just like to add here that I am from the bush, we don’t even have a train let alone trams, so I leave all our public transport decisions up to Jen and we stayed true to form but ending up on the wrong side of the city. We were trying to get to the ADTR signing and acoustic concert. I will never trust a Public transport App again! We even asked a guy on the street who told us the wrong directions as well. So we jumped in a cab we had to google map the venue just so the cab driver could find the place and finally got there only to be up the back and we could not see them.

I did offer to climb the shelves and take a pic, but you didn’t think they would hold my weight. I think I might have got the top of one of their heads in one pic tho. We decided to hang around for the signing and then we found out that all the tickets had gone as they had been given out at 9 am. And the only other way we could have got to meet them was by buying a cd, which they had sold out of too! Not happy! So we decided to catch a cab back to our hotel refer to previous comment about our luck with public transport in time to meet up with Jackie and Robyn. After thinking that we should have an early night seeing that we had a big day ahead of us, we totally ignored that and went to Crown Casino for a few drinks be honest, we were all hoping we would run into GD and then to a shop to buy dinner chips, dip, cheese, salami, cashews, basically junk nibbly food, not really dinner per se and then we sat up talking and feasting. Only Robyn slept that night! Well, I managed a few hours after giving up on the leaky air mattress and building a bed from the couch cushions around 4am. Leeann and I got ready pretty quick and after last years debacle we decided to catch a cab. This was a great idea.

I decided that I was going to act like a tourist and tell the driver I was from Darwin. Why you may ask? I have no idea. The driver pulled over to let us out and after Leeann got out he said quick shut the door the cops are behind me. I had to leave Leeann speechless by the side of the road while I was being driven further down the road. Yes, here I was thinking she was trying to ditch me already. At least she waved as she drove off into the distance. After I got out I then had to jump over the barrier and did so with so much style. You can inbox me, and I can show you the pics of Jen jumping fences after last year’s Soundwave if you really want a visual image of this ;) This time we had no trouble getting in as I had not lost the tickets this year! Hallelujah!!! The merch tent was pretty empty so we bought our merch lots, and lots of merch! Then Leeann had a dream come true with a dude from The Porkers licking her facee. Hmmmm, not too sure about that, I could provide you with a list of band guys who could fulfill this dream though. While I was taking pics. Even when I said I had finished he kept licking her face! I just got a photo, I said no thanks to a face licking!.

We then headed over to see if we could get meet and greet tickets. We could for all the bands I loved! I was pretty happy about that. All the bands I was hoping to meet had already sold out, or had dropped out of the tour :’( We first met Zebrahead who were seriously the funniest group of guys I have ever met. I bought 3 tickets to see them so I could get 3 things signed. It was early so there was no one else to meet them! Leeann met a couple of guys from the Zebrahead fb group we are in, I will let her tell that story.

Jen and Zebrahead

LeeLeeann and Zebraheadand Ze What is Dan Palmer doing????

Well, it was actually around the time Jen was heading back to buy her 3rd M&G ticket for Zebrahead, that I saw some other fans showing off a vinyl they had got signed, having already taken stacks of pics of Jen with the band, I thought we may have been able to use some other fan pics in the mag. Well, as I am just a little on the forgetful side, I knew I would never remember their names, so I asked if they were a part of the fb group we were with, and from there the convo flew. Was great finally meeting other fans from the group in person, and they were the ones who told us that Zebrahead were about to put on an acoustic set at the 3 wise tent. We then went over to a tent and Zebrahead put on an acoustic show you can see the two songs here and here. Authority Zero were up next you can see their song here. We then spent the next half an hour talking to them all and taking photos. That was one of the highlights of my day. The next bit of the day is a little fuzzy, for the record, we were not drinking at this stage, so problems with memory might have to be linked to age, Jen’s not mine lol

Meeting Zebrahead after their signing and hanging out with them and their fans was one of the highlights of our day. These guys are seriously some of the funniest peopleI have met. They love to photo bomb! Ali decided to kiss Matty the same time as me and the look on Matty’s face says it all! The acousitc perforances were great. Authority Zero were also great to meet and I encourage you to check them out!

I think we met Less Than Jake that was after we decided to get something to eat, CHIP ON A STICK!! and stumbled across that awesome female singer that we still don’t know the name of, and I was able to tease friends at home by letting them all know I caught the end of Richie Sambora’s set and headed over to see Zebrahead play. Their set was perfect, and the circle pit allowed Leeann and I to get third row. All too soon their set was over and the second row left in front of me. I moved up and after a while the people in front of me decided to leave and I found myself on the barrier! I left Jen at the barrier and tried to work my way to the stage next door as Panic at the Disco had just hit the stage, and I had been told Brendon got his shirt off. Ooops, I mean I really wanted to see them live. It was at that time I looked around and saw Emma my daughter for the first time that day also on the barrier.

Jaret Bowling for Soup.

We enjoyed Panic at the Disco! set although we were secretly willing them to finish. When Bowling for Soup came on the crowd went wild. These guys are amazing in concert. They joked about all the other bands and played their best songs. When they played 1985 every person in the crowd sang.

It was great to hear that and it was not until later when I saw a photo of the crowd that I realized how many people were there.

ish one day I am going to be in that crowd. I was so pumped after this set I was raring to go and meet them. They are as funny as I thought they would be. We managed to get a few photos even thought the security were yelling at us to move on‌.. security actually banned all photos after Jen and I got through the line as we were taking too long.

Then we headed over Jen having a rest to meet Jackie and Robefore Green Day. byn we had to find them first, as unlike last year, there was more than one bar at Soundwave and the girls had gone to the wrong one and set ourselves up with plenty of beverages to help rehydrate us to watch Green Day. I admit at this point I curled up and used my backpack as a pillow and had a snooze. Green Day were fantastic. They played a 3 hour set 32 songs in all that seemed like minutes. There was humor, stage theatrics and then the sad songs. What about that guy that got up on stage to sing Welcome to Paradise, he rocked it! Or the girl who got up to play guitar, and then BJ gave it to her. Oh, and when Jackie went missing, only to come The guy that sang almost as back an hour later to tell well as Billie Joe! us she made it to the front, so we told her she had forgotten to take her camera and sent her back to get pics. They played many songs off their Dookie album that made their oldest fans very happy! I still can’t believe BJ played ‘Put my little shoes away’ off of Foreverly, the album he did with Nora Jones.

When they played their last song we all had tears in our eyes. I cried openly at Wake me up when September Ends. I am pretty sure everyone else did as well. Yeap, I was a blubbing mess. That was the perfect way to finish off yet another SW for me, a train trip back to the hotel, and then falling in a heap, a few nibbles and a few more drinks then we all slept well. Now I know we saw more bands than I mentioned. I know we met more people! We had so much fun! I just can’t remember it all! I cannot wait till next year! Again I am amazed that I met Leeann though a SP facebook page and have made so many memories with her. Thanks again to SP! How about the fact that SW 2014 marked the 1st anniversary of us actually meeting? Hmmmm, time to start working on my mum now, so we can do it all again next year.

I met Zebrahead at Soundwave and had the pleasure to interview Matty who I of course could not help giving him a kiss on the cheek, little did I know that Ali was also waiting for a chance to do the same! These guys are so much fun to hang out with! Matty, thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, I hope that you answer them honestly...... Matty: *Some answers may or may not be true.

This is your second time with Soundwave touring, last time back in 2012…. Does this mean we can count on you celebrating your 20th year together with us in 2 years time?

“I’m not really sure what a ‘scratch up’ means…but if it means that Ali caught herpes from someone scratching him up, then yes. He’s definitely going in there. “20 years eh?... yeah If he doesn’t, I’m gosure. I can’t believe I’ve ing to push him in or worn the same clothes perhaps shoot him in for such a long time. So the crowd with a canyou’re saying that new non. That will serve clothes won’t have holes them right for giving and stains on them? If him scratches and we’re around for a 20 year herpes. It’s the gift thing, I’m buying some that keeps on giving.” new clothes just for you. We will come there for Are you going to have our 20th if you buy us a bartender on stage each 20 shots!” again? That was awesome. Your time slot is a little later this Ali, got scratched up at year! one of the Soundwave concerts last time, “That’s a silly quesIs that going to stop him tion. Duh. Who would going into the crowd serve us drinks??” again?

You played with Simple Plan in Download Festival and Fire Wind and Kiss Festival plus a European tour in 2008, were they an influence on you musically? “I’m going to say no, not at all. No offense to them, they’re great. But the only person to influence me would be David Lee Roth. He is the Chuck Norris of rock and roll. Did you know that David Lee Roth parties harder than all of the colleges and universities combined? He can also knit you a sweater while he’s sharpening his sword while doing the splits…in the air.”

Pierre playing Drums For Zebrahead’s Wasted. Watch both bands having fun on stage here.

On this tour you made Pierre’s dreams of being a drummer come true when you let him play drums to your song ‘Wasted’ and Seb played Guitar how much fun was that? (I will add some links to videos) “I had no idea who they were. I just thought they were some ‘Make-A-Wish’ kids or something. Thankfully they knew how to play. I have no idea what song I was playing, but they seemed to know what they were playing, and the crowd seemed like they knew who they were. Seriously though, it was fun!” ☺ Any funny Stories you can share of your tours with SP?

“Not that I can remember…alcohol kills brain cells, ya know. Oh, this might have happened or not… could have been a dream…but Seb tried to steal my guitar. I told him I only had one and I couldn’t let him have it. I think he stole my wallet instead.

Oh, and Pierre met my mom and eventually got her pregnant. I guess he’s dad now. I’m going to be grounded to my room now for saying that aren’t I? Chuck was the quiet one. Just sat there eating cake and mumbling about hockey.”

Seb playing the guitar on stage with Zebrahead in 2008.

You played with them in 2012 at the Groezrock in Belgium as well as in Switzerland that weekend had they changed at all since 2008? Possibly matured? Haha “No. They were wearing the exact same clothes. I felt sorry for them, so I gave them some Dorito’s and some beer. They were thankful and gave us passes into Canada...but the dates expired. One of them had a parrot and a peg leg, so I guess that was new?” Would you say that SP inspired you in your musical journey? “I think that they inspired me to drink more Canadian beer and whiskey. That stuff is delicious, and I have been missing out on all of that delicious northern alcohol!” I met and saw RBF twice last year, what is your history with them? I’ve seen Dan and John played a few times with you live. Super nice guys.

“We have known RBF all of our lives. They are pretty much our brothers. They’re actually behind me right now telling me what to type and pissing me off. Jeez, just back off guys… please?!? Anyway, I honestly don’t think we’ve never gone a year without touring with them. I’m pretty sure we can play each other’s sets.” Take us through a typical day at SW festival. “Wake up at noon and eat Subway. Then go to the festival in a bus. Go to catering and eat soup. Go to the stage and make sure our crew has done everything right. Fix all of the stuff our crew has messed up. Play the show. Go to catering and eat more food. Take bus back to the hotel until you fall asleep. That’s pretty much it…except for drinking in between all of the above.”

How were the fans you met at the signing tents? Any stand out fans? Eg any tattoos or unusual fans? “I think we just signed stuff for these people in line, but they could have been waiting to just use the bathroom. Some of them had ZH tattoos and shirts or other stuff to sign. I think an unusual fan would be the ones that just walk up and say ‘you suck’ and leave. Then again, I don’t think they were fans at all.”

Which city was the best for you? You can say Melbourne…. You know you want to!

Do you guys think that it is better to do a Festival like SW or a single tour?

“Definitely not Melbourne. Ok, Melbourne. All of the city’s were great actually. We don’t like to discriminate. We even liked the cities that we didn’t play in.”

“Both. Get the tan at the festival, and then show it off at the club show!”

You have a strong fan base here in Australia, what city has the most solid fan base?

What band that is touring SW are you most like? “I’d definitely say Gwar.”

“If I had to choose, I’d say Gotham City.”

Anything that went wrong for you at all? “No way man. I was perfect. I played every single note perfectly and hit all of my notes. I even puked in tune.” Music video I’m just here for the beer? What’s the chance of you doing that again with SW footage? “Unfortunately our camera crew couldn’t make it…ok, we couldn’t afford to bring them. We’re poor, ok?!?” How much did you enjoy doing this with Authority Zero?

You recently toured the UK Are the crowds better here than the UK? As that matters to us! ☺ A LOT!

“Unfortunately they weren’t able to make it, BUT we went ahead and plated extra songs which turned out great!

“Yes, of course. Everyone is better looking and has a bitchin’ tan. You just don’t get tans in the UK. That’s a deal breaker for me. That and Outback Steakhouse.” Did you play the same set every city? “For this tour, yes. Our brains can’t handle more than one set.”

Yeah I can see that Matty..........................

written by Jen

You are playing at Slam dunk Festival in May this year, Any other Plans for 2014 you can share with us? “Yes we are. As for anything else, just festivals in Europe in the summer and maybe back into the studio? We’ll see what happens!” Love you guys to come back to Aus for SW in your 20th year! If not before! “Well we might as well come back!...I left a pair of shoes there!”

Thanks Matty! Appreciate it! Thanks for your complete honesty and seriousness in your answers. Not sure I believe all of them but I guess you did day that at the start! :) “Thank YOU!”

Originating from Mesa Arizona, punk

pop band Authority Zero has been captivating fans for almost 20 years resulting in four studio albums, two live acoustic albums and two EPs. The band first came together in 1994 when school friends Bill Marcks, Jerry Douglas and J.W Gordon started putting songs together. In 1995, Jerry’s long time friend Jason DeVore arrived for his annual summer visit, and what was originally a joke of Jason joining the band became a reality. The band underwent a few member changes in those first few years, before a final line featuring Bill Marcks, Jason DeVore, Jeremy wood, and Jim Wilcox resulted in their first EP being followed up with their first studio release with Lava Records, ‘A Passage in Time” which featured a blend of genres including punk rock and reggae, as well as Spanish and Portuguese influences. 2004 saw the band release their 2nd album,

Andiamó (Italian for ‘We go’) could also be read as ‘And I am zero’ which became the title of their first live DVD which was released after Andiamó. This album again demonstrated its Spanish/Portuguese influences, but was also a lot more politically charged than A Passage in Time. 2006 saw the release of a live acoustic compilation ‘Rhythm and Booze’ under their new label Suburban Noize Records which was followed up in 2007 with ’12:34’. In 2008, founding member Bill Marchs left the band to spend more time with his family and was replaced by Zach Vogel. The bands 4th album ‘Stories of Survival’ was released in 2010. Vogel parted ways with the band and was replaced by The Mag Seven’s guitarist Brandon Landelius. In January 2012, Jim Wilcox left the band and in March, Sean Sellers (formally of Good Riddance and The Real McKenzies) joined the lineup as drummer. 12 months later, and just

one month shy of their next album release, Jeremy Wood announced via Facebook that he would also be leaving the band. He was replaced by Mike Spero as the bands new drummer. There latest album ‘The Tipping Point’ which was named after the Macolm Gladwell book was released on April 2nd 2013 and was followed up by a heavy touring schedule around the world which saw them included as part of the 2014 Soundwave line up.

Hey Jason, it was great to meet you at Sound wave, thanks for taking the time out to answer my questions. I sat in the front row of your Melbourne acoustic performance in Melbourne. I had never heard of you before but I loved your song and have now become a fan. The song you played sure was awesome! Jason-Hey thanks a lot! Appreciate you stopping by! Did you play any other acoustic shows other than Melbourne? Jason-We did one other acoustic set that I believe was in Sydney. Melbourne seemed to draw more attention that day. You guys have been in the music scene now for over 18 years, what is your secret that has kept you going? I hope you return to Australia to celebrate your 20th year? Jason-Love, passion, music, the fans, and "free" beer. We would love to make it back to do more club shows for sure!

You guys could not make it to the acoustic show in Collingwood before SW, did you get lost in town? I live in Melbourne‌.. and I missed the A Day to Remember acoustic show as I got lost‌.. Jason-No there actually ended up being some communication issues is what it seems happened. As we were boarding our flight to get there, we then found out at that moment that that was exactly when we were supposed to be playing haha. Tell us about a typical day at SW. We know so well what it is like to be on the other side of the barrier, tell us what it is like being a performing artist. Jason-Man you get up pretty early, commute to your stage, set everything up and do a quick line check ad before you know it, the doors are open and it's show time. We played wicked early in the day around 11:25 so we would basically rock it out and then just float throughout the festival and check out all the bands. We've got a lot of buddies out there on the tour with us as well so we'd have a lot of hang time.

You played at Stage 3 Annex, where I spent most of my time, how was the crowd at that time of the day? Jason-You know for it being as early as it was, I was stoked. The kids came out for us and rocked it down. Which Aussie city do you think has the best crowds? This is a pretty serious question! Jason-I would have to say I really enjoyed the Melbourne crowd a lot. In all honesty whatever kids did make it out to all of our shows showed a great deal of appreciation. Yeah! I knew we were better than Sydney :D You guys did not do a signing, was there a reason for that? Jason-Not at all! I think one just never got set up. When you met some fans, were any crazy? Any funny fans you can tell us about? Jason-I wish I had a rad story for ya but sadly I do not. Haha

.

I know you guys have played Festivals with Simple Plan, including Groezeck Rock in Belgium in 2012, Are there any funny stories you can tell? Jason-Plenty of craziness that happens on the road in between, but the Festivals were pretty mellow in that regard

In the media articles that I have read that your sound is often compared to Simple Plan, do you agree with this? Jason-Really? I actually don't hear it and that's quite surprising! We don't nearly have as much of the pop element as they incorporate, but hey! So long as people are talking about us!

You guys and Simple Plan were both part of Lava Records, did your paths cross at all during that time? Jason-Only once I believe at a Warped Tour lunch line.

What does 2014 hold in store for you? I have noticed that you did not have a break when you got back from Australia! You are already on tour again! Jason-Tour Tour Tour! We're booked out through October at the moment and will certainly be doing more writing and demo recording to keep new music pouring out. No breaks!

Thanks Jason! I wish you all the best for 2014, and I hope you come back to Australia real soon. You have many new fans Down Under! Great to meet you.

originating from Florida USA. They formed in 1992. The current band members are Chris (vocals and guitar), Roger (Vocals and Bass) Vinnie (drums and Lyrics), Buddy (trombone) and Peter (saxophone).

With a band name like Less than Jake, there must have been a story about why they called themselves this. Their name came from Vinnies dog, Jake who was treated better than anyone else therefore everyone was Less than Jake.

punk band in your 16th year, sometimes you don’t fit in the modern music industry. You need to be a shiny new penny. We didn’t feel like the rest of our years as a band should fit in that narrow parameter. ... All I do know is that we’re writing songs now and they seem to have the spirit of a tempo in mind, all very speedy but once we hit the record button they may be slower” He wanted to combine ska punk and pop punk in every song on their GNV FLA album. They toured the UK with Zebrahead to promote this album.

I caught up with Chris and found out about his Soundwave experience and found out that Less than Jake have a new album out that he is seriously promoting right now! You can buy the album here. I love it! I am sure that you guys will too. Hi Chris, I was so pleased to hear that you guys were on the Bill again for Soundwave. You were last here in 2011, in what way do you think you guys have changed since then? A FEW MORE WRINKLES, MORE BACK HAIR, AND A COUPLE OF POUNDS. OTHER THAN THAT, NOT TOO MUCH. WE DO HAVE A NEW RECORD CALLED "SEE THE LIGHT" Your sound reminds me of Reel Big Fish, who played here last year at Warped. They are fantastic to see live and are really great guys to meet. You just toured the UK with them and Zebrahead. Has Reel Big Fish had an influence on you musically?

NOT AN INFLUENCE PER SE BECAUSE WE BOTH STARTED AROUND THE SAME TIME. MUSICALLY, I HEAR SOME COMPARISONS, BUT LYRICALLY OUR BANDS ARE WORLDS APART. WE LOVE THOSE GUYS. THEY ARE FAMILY. Any stories of antics that you guys got up to in the UK? NO TIME FOR ANTICS BECAUSE WE WERE TOO BUSY PROMOTING OUR NEW RECORD "SEE THE LIGHT" Tell us a typical day at a SW concert for you. We all know what it is like for a fan but can you explain it from your side of the barrier?

TYPICALLY WE GET TO THE SHOW GROUNDS ABOUT 3 HOURS BEFORE OUR SHOW, DO A BIT OF STRETCHING THE MUSCLES OUT, CHOKE DOWN A PISS WARM BEER OR TWO AND HIT THE STAGE. What was your favourite Australian City to play at? DARWIN haha Chris! What song that you played live at SW do you think the crowd reacted to the most? IT'S ACTUALLY THE MOMENTS WHEN WE ARE IN BETWEEN SONGS THAT WE GET OUR BEST REACTION. written by Jen @justjenrees

How was the signing for you? Were there any crazy fans that stood out for you? YES, THE GUY WHO SHOWED UP WITH OUR BAND LOGO TATTOOED ON HIS BUM.

You toured with Simple Plan back in 2011 at Warped Tour (US) did you guys meet them? YES, COOL GUYS. SAW THEM RECENTLY AT A FESTIVAL WE PLAYED.

Is there any other way that you are similar to Simple Plan or have had interactions with them? WE BOTH RELEASE NEW MUSIC. "SEE THE LIGHT" just came out :-)!

You side wave with Bowling for Soup and Zebrahead (and Pennywise for Sydney) was that a sell out? Was what the crowd like? Did anything bizarre happen on stage? YES, IT WAS SOLD OUT AND YES IT WAS CRAZY. GOT A 63 YEAR OLD MARRIED GUY ON STAGE TO KISS A 25 YEAR OLD WOMAN. SHE LOVED IT.

You are very similar to Simple Plan in the way you interact with your fans, Your drummer writes the Lyrics and you have even covered the same Cheap Trick Song Surrender. You both are in’ Punk Rock Holocaust’ and both were on the movie ‘Grind’

You should really do some tours to promote the new album!

That must of been in Sydney, in Melbourne you asked a lot of people up ion stage, I mention that in my review.

WOW. FUN FACTS. DID I MENTION WE HAVE A KICK ASS NEW ALBUM OUT CALLED "SEE THE LIGHT"? Ummm Yep!

Can you share with us any plans you have for 2014 and beyond? WE WILL BE ON TOUR THE REST OF THE YEAR PROMOTING THAT THING I HAVE BEEN RAMBLING ABOUT. PLAYING THE U.S. WARPED TOUR ALL SUMMER. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME. "SEE THE LIGHT"!!!!! Thanks for your time!

In 1990, the band was forced to change its name to The Porkers when regular Newcastle venues refused to add them to the line up under their current name. As a result of this, the band entitled there first EP Tired of Being Pork Hunts, which reached No. 6 on the Australian independent charts.

2 years later, after Sean had left to pursue other interests, Pete had finally recruited a full line up, and the then named Pork Hunts were set to play their first gig.

1994 saw the release of their debut album ‘Grunt’ was described as “A masterpiece of adult only ska brilliance” by Sydney’s Drum Media and saw the band enter the US market with Moon Ska Records.

Ska Punk is the fusion of Jamaican folk music, American jazz, rhythm and blues with classic punk rock. It features fast tempos, guitar distortion, on beat punk rock-style interludes and punk-style vocals. As well as the usual guitar, drums and vocals of typical bands, Ska Puck bands also use keyboard, brass and reed instruments as part of their line up.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW THE PORKERS

Leeann up close and a little too personal with The Porkman.

By Leeann @adnaxar Hi Pete,

know first to admit I didn’t e th I’m e. m r fo ns w questio had me cape time to answer a fe ge in Melbourne, you sta e th t hi u yo e Thanks for taking th ut ads in d more than a few he before SW, but the m ha nd th ba ea ur ad yo eg t M ou re ab h we muc cing you lking on stage announ tivated. Actually, wa WT..... around me lol ng ki as le op pe d an g turnin

The Porkers have been around for a number of years, playing concerts and festivals not only here, but around the world. How does Soundwave stack up against some of these other festivals?? It was HUGE ! Probably the biggest scale thing we’ve ever done. It crazy how something so big runs smoothly. How did you get included onto this year’s bill? I ran into A.J. backstage at a Reel Big Fish gig in Sydney, after a few drinks we were on the bill ! There was a little drama even before the festival got started with you briefly being removed from the tour. This must have been a stressful time. Can you tell us any more about this?? (if this is to secret to tell us you don’t need to answer!) Miscommunications and stuff, but we ended up back on it!

How did it feel to kick off the main stages at Soundwave? Crazy ! Very daunting. But A.J. knew we could do it, and it was so. We attacked it like we were headlining it! What was your highlight of the SW tour? Being part of it was the highlight! But if I was to pick one it would be our Sydney show, some crazy funny shit went down! Did you have the chance to check out any other bands on the tour? Only on a couple of the dates, but I made sure I caught Less Than Jake and Rocket From The Crypt. And my surprise find was Skindred! I’ve seen some of the pics from your SW tour diary. Any funny/ interesting stories you can share with us?

The Porkman falling off the stage and landing on a security guard in Sydney has to be one of the funniest moments in Porkers history! I had a close encounter (A VERY CLOSE ENCOUNTER) with The Porkman. Who is this strange masked man? Little is known about our dancing mascot The Porkman, but he drinks to the point of thinking he can fly, but usually just falls on people.

Way too many to pick something definitive, but to list a few - Bad Manners, Fishbone, Specials .... Is there any band that you would like to jam or tour with? Again too many to list, but would like to catch up with Rancid again ! You guys have been gracing stages for almost 30 years. What is the secret of your longevity?

He wasn’t too badly hurt after his little stage dive in Sydney was he?

Stupidity and stubbornness on my part !

Nothing too bad, a couple of cracked ribs, but he was back at it in Melbourne!

It has been a little while since the release of your last album. Is there a chance of new things to come in the not too distant future?

How would you describe your style of music to others who may not have discovered you yet??

Quite possibly, Soundwave was our first performance in 5 years, and with a fresh new line up it’s looking promising, - stay tuned !

It’s kinda ska, which is like fast reggae, but we mix it with punk and a lot of other stuff. It’s probably ‘reggaemetal’! Whatever it is, it’s fun! Who are your main musical influences?

look ering our questions. I Thanks again for answ in her one of your shows ot an ng hi tc ca to d ar forw the future. Leeann

You can hear it here. The band just played at Sound Wave Festival. Check the line-up of the shows here: Here you can check them playing live the song “Basket Case” at Brisbane in this Sound Wave edition. BOWLING F In 2003,

the band was nominated for a Grammy in the category “Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal“ for their song “Girl All The Bad Guys Want“ from their second studio record “Drunk Enough To Dance“. Sadly thought, they didn’t win. Prior to “Drunk Enough To Dance“ the band had released their first studio album in 1999, called “Let’s Do it For Johnny!!“, as well as two EP’s. “A Hangover You Don’t Deserve“ followed two years later and is to date the band’s most successful release, making in tot he Top 40. Their single “1985“ became the band’s biggest hit in the US. Bowling For Soup when on tour along with Simple Plan in 2006 on the Star 102.1 StarJam tour, opening up for them and playing songs from all records so far released. The band’s first live DVD called “Live and Very Attractive“ was released in 2008, after filming over the course oft he Uk Get Happy October Tour. In 2009, singer Jaret Reddick announced the name of their tenth studio album: “Sorry For Partyn‘.“ The album was released on October, 12th. One and a half months later, they released their first holiday record “Merry Flippin‘ Christmas“. They announced the release of a Best Of album, set for early 2011, called “The Very Best Of Bowling For Soup“.

“Lunch. Drunk. Love“ was released as the twelfth full-length record in September 2013. Prior to ist release, Reddick announced that fans would get to choose how to name the record. Their 2013 UK tour was announced to be their last-ever UK tour, which caused many fans to believe that the band would split up, which Reddick denied. Financial and personal factors played a major part in their decision to not include the UK in their tours in the future. Two new records are set to be released in 2014: A new studio album and another Best Of record, celebrating the band’s 20 year anniversary in June. Bowling For Soup are good friends with the guys of Simple Plan, even referring to the band in their song “From The Rooftops“:

“I rock all black and she can’t stand that I’m dressed like the dudes in Simple Plan.”

SIDEWAVE

I was super stocked to hear that Bowling for Soup had a side wave with Zebrahead and Less than Jake the Wednesday before SW in Melbourne. Being an over 18 concert I could not take my son who was shattered as BFS are one of his fav bands. A friend of mine, Kerrie who is a photographer was happy to take his place! We turned up after the doors opened but found that we were there early enough to get a great position. We grabbed our merch and got the camera ready to take some good shots.

Zebrahead were first up and they smashed their set. They performed some great antics and dragged a guy up on stage to have a drinking comp, I later met that him Soundwave. Nice guy! I loved seeing this band live and I thought their set list was perfect. They had their trademark bar on stage and Marc served them drinks through out the set. My favourite song from the Set was Anthem but however it made me a little sad as I knew that it would be there last song.

When Bowling for Soup came on I could hardly contain my excitement, I managed to get a great position in the crowd and screamed so loud when they came out. I had been waiting to see them live for quite a while and they certainly lived up to my expectations. They told really bad jokes and drank a lot on stage! They played all my fav old songs (see Set list) and they played 2 off their new album. (Since We broke Up and Circle.) Not many of the crowd knew these songs but I think that BFS cd sales would of increased just from that concert alone. They gave us a photo opportunity in the middle of one of their songs and they lined up so we could take some whole band photos. They finished their set off strongly with everyone singing at the top of their voices to Stacy’s Mom and 1985.

Cavalier Youth Review by @DangerBrett

Cavalier Youth is the new album from British would be the perfect Hollywood action block buster

pop punks You Me At Six. It’s been three years since the release of the previous album “Sinners Never Sleep”. “Lived A Lie” was the first single, although we had to wait 4 months before the album was to be unleashed on the world. The wait was truly worth it. Out of the 12 tracks, there are a few stand outs,

closing credits song. Then along comes “Be Who You Are”, which turns the intensity down a notch, with it’s acoustic chill out sounds, but is relatively short, abit like a filler. I would’ve loved for them to have expanded on it. This album is music to the ears, not that the previous albums were bad, it’s

“THE WAIT WAS TRULY WORTH IT” the first single, the 2nd single “Fresh Start Fever”, which uncannily has a Fall Out Boy’s “The Phoneix” ring to it. “The Wild Ones” samples Alphaville’s “Forever Young”, with it’s “Are we gonna live forever” interspersed in the chorus, but I don’t think that was something intentional. “Too Young To Feel This Old” is a solid opener, “Love Me Like You Used To” is a rocky classic sounding YMAS. “Cold Night” feels like it

just this album is more easily ingested. It just goes to show that bands like YMAS, as they become more experienced, the music just keeps getting better and better with each release. Thank god there is no “screamo”on this release, and that just makes it more listenable and radio friendly. This album really does “Burn Out Bright”.

It may have been the start of the month, but Seb had a crazy week ahead of him planning the MOTH season 14 finale. The cartoon schedule may have been all messed up. But there was time to battle. Seb wanted to know “what was the last song you heard and liked, but didn’t expect you would.” He let us know that it was the quick funny unexpected one liner quotes that make him laugh the most. Setting fans the task of trying to do something to be proud of. We had until Saturday to do it.

Last year David’s hometown of Matane started a project called “Chaine de forces” (A Chain of Strength). The initiative uses a parchment inscribed with words of encouragement and strength and is passed from person to person, with each person adding their own advice and encouragement. This year David was asked to start the chain, before passing the parchment on. You can see a video message of David starting the chain right here. https://www.facebook.com/ photo.php?v=70044480001800 9&set=vb.487821574613667&As the video is in French, you can check out Simpleplan.cz for a translation. www.simpleplan.cz/en/ index.php/david-desrosiers-participates-inthe-chaine-de-forces-

FAN OF THE

MONTH Julia Resende When was the first time you heard about Simple Plan? I can’t really remember exactly… I’ve always known, as far as I can remember, of a band called Simple Plan, even when I didn’t know any of their songs. What I do remember is the first song I liked and knew enough to download on my phone: I’d Do Anything. I used to go to this camp where they’d play that song all the time and I loved it!

much because when it comes to Simple Plan, I can’t shut up. I fell in love with Summer Paradise after a girl mixed a video of our trip to Canada with that song as a background because it described exactly what I felt at that moment. I believe that if weren’t for that song, I wouldn’t be their fan, because it was what got me excited for the show when I heard they were coming to my city. I started listening to other songs of theirs (some I already knew and others I didn’t) because I wanted to When was your first SP show? know some so that I wouldn’t be too awkward at the concert, October 14, 2012, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil but it was there that I realized what they meant to me. I felt something inside of me click as soon as they were onstage and For how long have you been a SP fan? after that night, nothing was ever the same. Almost 1 year and a half. Since the concert. Some people say I’m not a true fan because of that, but to be honest I think what How many times have you seen them live? makes me a “true” fan is what I feel about them and not how I Only one, which is sad because I wasn’t a fan yet so even if I felt met them. I’ve always liked the band ever since I first heard I’d the way I felt, I didn’t fight enough to meet them and wasn’t in Do Anything and thought they sounded great but I didn’t have the SPCrew so I couldn’t go to the Soundcheck Party. any special feelings for them. I may end up talking a little too

What do you love the most about Simple Plan? The way they care about people. Not just us fans, but people in general. The Simple Plan Foundation shows us that they don’t do what they do for the money, they truly love it.

What’s your favorite part of A Big Package For You (ABPFY)? The whole thing is so great, I’m sorry but I can’t pick a favorite part. I feel like I would be lying to you if I said I have a favorite part.

What’s your favorite possession of Simple Plan and why? That would probably be their book, because it makes me feel Best SP memories? like I know them better, like they want us to know them the The concert, definitely. I’ll never be able to explain what it feels same way they want to know us. like. Say what Simple Plan means to you. Everything. It may sound corny and cheesy but that’s what they are to me. They are my life. They made me stop cutting myself. They made me start living again. They showed me nothing’s ever as bad as it seems. Even today, when I feel sad, when I feel like hurting myself, the only way to keep on living, I think about them, I look at their pictures, or maybe listen to one of their songs, and I know I’m not alone, I know they’ll be always there for me. I know that there are five people who care about me, even if they don’t know me, and I know those people would be sad if I got bad again. They’ll be forever with me. I owe them my life, I would literally not be alive, not be breathing today, if it weren’t for them. I’m proud of being their fan. I know I’ll always be, even when I’m older and they’re no longer a band, I’ll always love them because they helped me through the hardest times. Their faces will never be the faces of “a band that I liked listening to” because they are so much more than that. They are part of me. I am who I am because of them.

Have you made friends thanks to SP? Definitely! Many! Even one of my best friends, actually. Favorite Simple Plan video? This Song Saved My Life. It shows exactly what I love most about them: how much they truly care about us. What song would you like Simple Plan to cover? All Time Low’s Time-Bomb, since it originally belonged to SP, I’d love to know how it’d sound in Pierre’s voice. Apart from Simple Plan, which other bands you like? All Time Low, Green Day, Marianas Trench, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and a few others, but none of them mean what Simple Plan mean to me.

If you could say anything to Simple Plan right now, what would you say? “Thank you for being there for us all the time. Whenever you Favorite Simple Plan song and why? need me, I’ll be here for you too.” I know they have issues too, I’d Perfect, probably. The other songs aren’t too far behind though. let them know we never forget they’re as human as us. But I think Perfect is my favorite one because I used to have a hard relationship with my father, and this song helped me a The last one, what is your wish you want to do with lot with it. Instead of fighting, I learned to sing that song in my Simple Plan? mind whenever I got mad at him, so that I wouldn’t forget how Tell them what they mean to me. much he meant to me. Today, we’re as close as ever, and it’s 100% thanks to Simple Plan. How the band helped you through your life? They made me realize that no matter what you’re going Describe each member in one word. through, it’s never worth it to give up, things always get better. Pierre: Bully David: Weird What’s your favorite member of the band and why? Chuck: Caring David. And Chuck. David makes me laugh and have a lot of fun Sébastien: Cute watching him do the weird stuff he does, and Chuck makes Jeff: Hardworking me sentimental, saying the things he says to the fans, both on twitter and in person. Do you have any tattoos related to Simple Plan? And if you don’t, would you like to have one? Not yet. I plan to have one that says TBSML (This Band Saved My Life) but I’m not sure where I’d have it, and I’m underage so I still have some time to think about it. If you could spend a whole day with SP, what would you do? I’d take them to the best places in town, do the things I love most, talk to them about stuff I knew they enjoyed and I’d listen to them get excited about it.
