EDITORS NOTE Woah! I cannot believe that another year has flown by and we are summing up another awesome SP year. Let me start with some welcomes to our assistant Copy Editor, Renee who has taken on the job to assist Leeann with the proofing. We also welcome a new writer, Vitoria to the team. We have our youngest ever writer join us at the age of 5 for a review of the Bookaboo Show. Some thank yous now. The obvious ones is to Simple Plan for giving us new music, many tours and of course pure inspiration. To the Editors of our team a huge thank you. We all work so hard on each edition and work well together as a team. To the writers, the photographers and the bands that we interview thanks to you as well. Thanks to Domi from Simple Plan.cz for keeping us up to date with the SP news. Biggest thank you to my husband Martin for his support, I could not do this without him. Next year maybe a quieter one for SP, as they are writing the 5th Album but hey did we not say that last December about this year? I am sure they will keep us with enough stories and news items to keep this magazine interesting. Some highlights of the year for me personally would be, being involved in the fans chosen from all over the world to be part of the Video Presentation to SP that was aired on Canada Radio back in January as well of course the Warped tour that has just come to a close here. A great way for me to start the year and end it. Meeting people from all over the world, like Ilan Benitar and interviewing bands such as MXPX, Mary Has a Gun, Bowling for Soup and local Australian bands. A fantastic year that has meant that I have ticked off many things on my bucket list so that makes me smile! Peace Out, Jen Simple Plan Space is in no way affiliated with Simple Plan, Warner Music, Atlantic Records or Coalition Entertainment. This is a magazine made entirely by fans for fans. Title: When I’m Gone Album: Simple Plan Genre: Poppunk, Alternative Rock Length: 3:42 Label: Lava/Atlantic Release: October 29th 2007 ’When I’m Gone’ is the first single of the self-titled studio album and it was released on February 12th 2008. The single managed to reach No. 11 on Canada Hot 100 and No. 23 on Sverigetopplistan in Sweden. The whole album has a bit of a darker sound to it and ’When I’m Gone’ is no exception. It builds up to the chorus and then it explodes. Back vocals, heavy drums and guitars together make a powerful chorus. Lyrically the song and especially the chorus really speaks to its audience. It’s about leaving the past in the past and finding the future. The music video was filmed in Los Angeles and the famous blogger Perez Hilton as well as the band’s close friend Patrick Langlois can be seen in it. The music video has been available on the band’s official YouTube channel since the middle of December 2007 and has gotten almost 17.400,000 views. In the video we follow a young woman who drives around town to cope with her recent breakup with a former lover, played by Pierre. She hasn’t got over him, which makes her see him everywhere she goes. In the end, she freaks out and calls him. Pierre sees who is calling and ignores the call and continues to enjoy his bottle of beer. Scenes with the band playing against a black backdrop are shown throughout the video. The album reached No. 2 on the Canadian album charts and No. 14 on the US Billboard 200 and charted in the top 10 worldwide in countries including Australia, Austria, Brazil, Sweden and Switzerland. You can Watch the Music video here.

”When I’m Gone” We’re doing it. I look around me, But all I seem to see, Is people going no where, Expecting sympathy. It’s like we’re going through the motions, Of a scripted destiny. Tell me where’s our inspiration, If life wont wait, I guess it’s up to me. in my head. While you sit there contemplating, You wound up left for dead (left for dead) Life is what happens while you’re busy making your excuses. Another day, another casualty. And that won’t happen to me. [Chorus] Let’s go! Won’t look back, When I say goodbye. I’m gonna leave this a hole behind me, Gonna take what’s mine tonight. Because every wasted day becomes a wasted chance. You’re gonna wake up feeling sorry, Because life wont wait, I guess it’s up to you [Chorus] You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone.

[Chorus:] Woah! No, we’re not gonna waste another moment in this town. Woah! And we won’t come back your world is calling out. Woah! We’ll leave the past in the past, Gonna find the future. If misery loves company well, So long, you’ll miss me when I’m gone. Ooh, ooh, ooh. You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone.

Why We Love Simple Plan!

In this article I’ll try to write about our feelings about this band. I know it’s impossible to write down some of them, to write down feelings that we have, but I’ll try and I hope I will do it well :) This article is my opinion, so I’m sorry if some people do not like it. So, we all say.... “I LOVE SIMPLE PLAN. SO MUCH.“ And the others people who don’t understand us, who don’t know what are we feeling (and we can’t pretty much describe it – it’s that feeling in our hearts whenever we think about them, it’s that feeling when we are speechless because we are so proud to be fans. The feeling we get when we really, really listen to their songs – (it’s the feeling just Astronauts can understand), those people are like: ‘You’re not gonna like them in a year or two, you’ll forget them, you’ll find another band,...‘ What we say to it? – ‘NO.‘ We can’t forget someone who saved/changed our lives. They are not just a band who appeared here like that (for example: some other bands who became famous just because of talent/reality/some other TV show and they maybe didn’t even know each other before it). Simple Plan worked so hard for over a decade to be as well known in the world as they are now. They taught us that when you have a dream, you won’t reach it if you’re not gonna work. You have to work so hard sometimes, but it’s worth it. Just imagine if Simple Plan gave it up in the beginning – Where would they be now? Where would we be?

They inspire us everyday – to fight, to learn, to strive to reach our dreams and not to be lazy. They are our role models. And we can’t forget someone like that. They are here for us. They are here for their fans. They hang out with us, they reply to our tweets, they are like our friends. How many bands, famous like them, do this? They don’t say ‘No.‘ to fans. I asked some people why they love Simple Plan and Marly said: ‘Why do I love Simple Plan? Because they appreciate us, fans. They take the time to talk to us and they're just so down-to-earth. Also, David will just randomly hug you.‘ A part of what Damla wrote: ‘[I love them] Because they are always humble and really care about their fans. When I was younger, whenever I was sad they were always there and still they are. ...‘ They taught a lot of us English. For example: me – less than two years ago I couldn’t say two normal sentences and look at me now! (just kidding, I know it’s still pretty bad, but better than nothing :)) They don’t write songs about sex, SWAG or anything like that. Their lyrics are meaningful. Their lyrics save lives. They write about problems we’re getting through everyday. And, well, they actually write it themselves, a lot of singers/bands don’t.

Simple Plan’s music is real music. They are not just mixing some computer-sounds together, they really play the instruments songs. They are also awesome when they’re performing live. We all are just so proud of them when they help people, when they do what they do and save lives, when they get an award for it,... We can’t thank them enough for what they’ve done. We can’t say what we exactly feel. Someone feels a lot of love and respect for those guys, someone can feel also something else. But we all know one thing: WE LOVE SIMPLE PLAN.

Written by Maria (@MariamAstronant Leeann said: ‘... Simple Plan has brought my kids and I closer together, and introduced me to the greatest friends around the world. I can never thank them enough for everything they have done for me.‘ Because of them we have friends all over the world! Like, would you ever think you’re going to have friend somewhere on the other side of the world? That you will have friends you can talk to about anything and they understand you even if you’ve never met each other? That’s what Simple Plan does – connect people. We’re like one big family. We call ourselves Astronauts, but when we once become an Astronaut, we are no longer alone.

A part of what Jelena wrote: ‚[I love them] Because they understand me, I can relate to almost every song they write... Because their songs make me feel happy and make me realize I'm not the only one who feels like an Astronaut. ...‘

@QuickestTongue Why do I love Simple Plan? This is such a hard question because there are so many reasons to tell when it comes to the band that means the whole world to you. I feel like it's my destiny to be addicted to Simple Plan. Simple Plan is the first band that I listened to when I first found MTV channel on my TV. I can't believe that I have been in "relationship" with SP since 4th grade. Too many reasons so I have come to 4 main conclusions that I guess everyone feels the same: - I love SP because of the five humble, friendly, down-to-earth, handsome, talented... guys (Chuck, Pierre, Jeff, Seb and David). They are role models that everybody should look up to. - I love SP because of what they do. They have saved many people's lives. They have done such incredible charity works. They are super heroes who don't wear capes. - I love SP because their music is so meaningful. Not only does their music pull us through tough times but it also helps us forget about all the shitty things that happen to us every single day. Their music, however, does make us cry like a baby. Their music is super POWERFUL. It's my addiction. - I love SP because they themselves have taught us great things. They taught us to be who we are, to take pride in ourselves, to try our best and not to give up on your dreams... Personally I love Simple Plan because they are my purpose of what I am doing right now. Without them I would be lost Gosh! I just love them so much!!

"Because they make good music, obviously. But that's not the main reason. The main reason why I love Simple Plan is because they write songs that we can relate to, and it makes us feel like someone understands what we're going through, like we're not alone. Because they have a special connection with the fans, something I've never seen before. When they are playing a show, they make us feel like we're one of them, like the crowd and the stage are only one. They wrote a song for us, a special book telling us fans what they went through to be where they're at. Because they show us, day by day, that if we have a dream, we gotta work hard for it to become true. Because they are as human as us - even if sometimes we think they are not - and they don't snub (that's not the word I want to, but I couldn't found any other) us, when they meet fans they try to give everyone attention. Once the security people didn't let the fans talk to them at an airport, so they tweeted the hotel they were in. Because of the Simple Plan Foundation, something they work their hearts to make happen and get bigger. They make concerts, events and stuff, to save money to help young people in need (with the foundation). And I love them because they saved my life, and wasn't it for them, I'd still not know what to work with. Because of them, I'm going to be a psychologist, and help as many people as I can with that. I could go on all day, but I think it'd be too boring to read." By: @PassportSlap (Brazil) "Their music has the power to make us overcome difficulty moments. Sometimes no one can understand what we're going through, so you just turn on the music and everything can be explained, you feel better listening to their music." By: @Izalete_Tavares (Brazil) By Nathaniel: “I like Simple Plan because of the way I feel I can connect with there lyrics like there written about me which I feel all good bands need.

"First, I love Simple Plan so much because they really saved my life. I was feeling lonely, sad, depressed and thinking about suicide... I also started self-harming, but then I started listening to Simple Plan. The first song I heard was "Perfect" and I cried so much because it describes me, then I heard more about them and start feeling better. I love them because they make me feel happy, they make me smile. I've been struggling the last couple of years with self-harm and Simple Plan keeps me breathing, they are my everything now. And I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for SP. Every time I'm feeling bad, I just turn up their music and everything feels right, they helped me a lot, even more than my family and friends. They are my reason to keep fighting. They make me feel better with their music, their videos, their jokes, etc. I love them too because they are good people, you know, they helped so many peoples. The "Simple Plan Foundation" have helped people with cancer, addiction, suicide, etc. They let me know that it’s ok to be myself. And it's really difficult explain why I love these 5 guys so much, there are many reasons why I love them. They're my heroes." By: @puckeffideb (Nicaragua) "There are so many reasons why we love them. They're cute, funny, sing well... But, most of all, they have the power, through the music, to make us feel ok with ourselves. When you can't find someone to help you, they're there, with their songs, to make you know that you are not alone and will never be. They can make us feel like there are other people feeling the same way we do, what comforts us. They are just incredible. They're the best part of my life." @vittexter (Brazil)

Written by Aryan (aged 5) with a little help from his mum. (Leeann @adnaxar)

When my mum first told me Jeff was going to be on Bookaboo, I was ‘SO EXCITED’. My mum brought me the book and we watched the clip on YouTube over and over again, but it only showed half of it. We had to wait almost a year to see it on TV. (With Aryan asking me every day if Jeff was going to be on Bookaboo that day, and sometimes he even tricked me that it was on, just to laugh at me when I ran to the TV) One morning I was getting ready for kindergarten when my brother started turning the channels, and there was Jeff. I started yelling at my brother to turn it back, and yelling at my mum to come watch. Jeff Stinco from my favourite band Simple Plan was on Bookaboo reading My Think-A-Ma-Jink written by Dave Whamond. The book is about a kid called Jack who gets a magic box from his Uncle Doug for his birthday. The box makes you have all these adventures, all you have to do is, say the magic words..... “Think, Think, Think-A-Ma-Jink, Hulla-Ba-Loo, Razza-Ma-Doo” and magic things will happen. The story was really funny. I liked when Jack and his sister Marie kept turning each other into different things, like Princess Stinkerbell and Frogzilla. Jeff read the book a lot better than my mum, and he danced a lot better than my mum too (thanks Aryan). You can watch the short clip of Jeff on Bookaboo like we did on YouTube. Hopefully you might be able to see the full episode for yourself one day soon. Even though we missed the start, we managed to hit record, so we can watch it over and over again (and we do). I love Jeff, and I love Bookaboo, seeing them together was AWESOME! I give it 2 thumbs up!

MARY HAS A GUN are.......

Leo Pia - Vocals Ladislas Chachignot - Bass / Vocals Ludo Andre - Guitar / Vocals Matt Lainel - Drums

I was lucky enough to catch up with Ladislas from Mary has a Gun before their European Tour. I know you readers love SP, well check out this band as I am sure that you will love them as well! Have a look at their latest music video below and follow them on social media sites for more news.

Hey Ladislas, great to have this chance to interview you. You recently celebrated 10 years together! Congratulations on that! I am hoping you can remember from so long ago how you guys all met and formed Mary has a Gun? Photo credit Ilan Benitah We met in high school (pretty classic story for rock bands). At the time we were just playing a few shows in front of our friends, doing some covers of the bands we used to listen (Blink 182, New found Glory and sum 41). We were doing that just for fun and our friends gave us the motivation to play and play again. We also needed to create our own stuff after a few months as a band. We tried to record some demo by ourselves, but as you can imagine the sound and quality of our 1st songs was awful haha but we all start from this point in the beginning ! Anyway we recorded again and again new song, new versions and we're still doing this right now ! This is such a cliché question, sorry about this but it has to be asked……. Who is Mary and does she in fact have a gun? I mean how did this name come about? This is a good question that many people would like to ask us, and we understand why. The answer is... Yes ! “Mary has a Gun” in fact it was a “watergun” that she used grab with her every single day in highschool ! It was something like a “keyring” but it was something “cool” so we decided to name the band like that as a tribute to this ! Mary never imagined that this gun story would travel so much. What do you think is the key for a band to stay together for 10 years? I think the main point is the friendship, and the same passion for music. It's also a matter of motivation and personal involvement cause being able to play music in a band for 10 years is not easy that all. It's a sort of “music relationship”. We don't have normal lives, going to work and earn money with a fixed timesheet like the most part of our friends. We all made some sacrifices to be able to create music for people and be able to have the great pleasure to share our “music vision”, our feelings with them. Sometimes this life can be very hard but sometimes you have some beautiful moments that remind you why you doing this for years ! We would not change this story with MHAG, it already gave us possibilities we could not expect in a life.

Has there been any change in the line up? With Mary Has A Gun we're 4 long time friends so the line up is the same for 10 years ! We had an extra member (Rom) for 2 years in 2009/2010 but he didn't had the same objectives as us. I think we're good as a 4 members band cause each person in MHAG bring it's own identity, At final, this mix become Mary Has A Gun. We create the songs all together and I think this is a really cool thing.

Who have been your main musical inspirations over the years? Music inspiration is a large subject, we could not write you the list of all the bands that made us who we are now and influenced our music cause there's honestly too many bands, solo artists since the beginning. Some of our actual inspirations are bands like : Foo fighters, Billy Talent, Incubus, New Found Glory, paramore or Don Broco . What has been the main highlight for you all? We lived these beautiful moments together so our best highlight are similar. I think one of the best moment for all of us is when we're on stage before the 1st song , we're facing people that came to see us playing live and share music together ! We're very thankful to them, whatever there countries or languages we have a connexion through music and I think this is one of the best thing you can expect when you're a musician, to keep this connection.

You guys have had some great media coverage lately, including Blunt magazine in Australia in the Fresh Fruit section. How does it feel to get this media exposure? Must feel pretty good! Ah, for sure it feels good! We’re very thankful to these magazines who talk about upcoming bands in their magazines cause it’s a crucial thing when you want to grow as a band. The French magazine Rock One (now Myrock) was the 1st one who really helped us (believe me it’s hard to be a rock band in France, moreover when you live very far from Paris). We’re very grateful to them. They gave us some exposure who couldn’t expect to have by ourselves and the chance to prove that people have to discover our music. Right now since we’re writing in English we have more possibilities and a much wider audience to touch. We’re very happy to see that music magazines in Australia and other countries are now talking about the band too. What is your ultimate dream magazine to be in and on the cover of? We had the chance to be on the cover of Rock One in 2010, it’s was a dream come truth for sure. But we do have some others that we would like to achieve !

How does your song-writing process typically go? Has that changed at all over the last ten years? The writing process is pretty similar through the years. We're starting with some guitar riffs that Leo and Ludo composed. We worked with that base all together, each member compose it's own parts and we try to construct some versions of the future song. Mathieu added the drum part to theses parts so it's more easy for us to get to the next step, Ladislas added the bass and when we have a catchy instrumental version Leo puts a vocal melody on top of that. When it's done, Ladislas writes the lyrics and then we record the vocal version with lyrics, doing some small adjustments if needed and adding some extra details to push the song to the best level we can do, then, we're done ! Your new album is out soon, called ‘Pendulum’ can you tell us a bit about what we can expect from this? Will all the songs be in English? “Pendulum” is like a fresh breathe for the band. Honestly we've put inside of it all of our heart ! We worked hard on each songs of this album. We had some “bad moments” with the band after the release of our 1st album in French (problem with our ex production team) and we decided to take a new start with this album: We were totally free to write songs the way we wanted, and this time we’ve written them in English. It was a new challenge cause our 1st album is in French, our native language. Fortunately we didn't have too many problems to write songs in English, cause the process is the same and it's easier to write lyrics that sounds good in English than in French. We 're very proud of this album, We cannot wait to release it and share it with people ! I love your new music video for your new Single ‘Hypnotized’ Tell us about the making the video that has got over 27,000 views Hypnotized is one of our favourite song that's why we decided to release it as a single and to shoot a music video on it ! We also wanted to show through this music video a strong imagery and impact cause we're doing this by ourselves, Leo worked 2 months on this music video to have this result! For us the image is very important and is deeply linked to the songs.

One of the reasons I like this song as you jump straight into the lyrics. It certainly has a catchy tune, it got stuck in my head from the first time I heard it, how has this song been doing in the charts? We're glad that you like it! We think this song sums up the band in 2013. This song has not been put on charts yet, we're still focusing on finding partners to work and release the album with us so I guess we'll be able to answer to this question in a couple of months. You have recently toured with some of our reader’s favourite bands, including All Time Low, New Found Glory, We are in the Crowd and Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!. Can you please tell us some funny stories about these guys? Please? We won’t tell anyone we promise! :) We were very honoured to be able to share the stage with bands like that, some of them like New Found Glory are bands that we listen since the beginning of the band ! We only made some supports for them on French shows so we were not able to share enough time to have these funny stories (that you always have when you tour with some bands for a month). Chunk! No Captain Chunk! are friends of us so I think we'll be able to share the stage with these crazy guys ( really crazy ) more often in the future ! What we can tell you is that New Found Glory is by far the most humble guys we met on stage, they are very kind and talk with their fans. It's so crazy cause they been there for years, this is one of the major influencing band in this type of music but they stay “humans”, they don't ignore you like some other famous bands usually do when you play as support bands for them. We didn't had any exchange except maybe “hello” from bands like “All Time Low” or “We are the in the Crowd” so I guess we cannot tell you if they have funny stories.

What was it like touring with these bands? Do they inspire you? Influence you at all? Play with a famous band like New Found Glory and see how they acting with people, fans, talking to them, signs autographs, photos, it reminds us that they doing this job for the music. Fame is a thing but they don't feel superior, they have this “accessibility” that we love. We'll remember this lesson from them ! What are some of the other bands that you have toured with? We also had the chance to play with bands like “Four Year Strong”, “Young Guns” and “Madina Lake”. What would be your ultimate band to support? Haha we would love to play with so many bands! Photo Ludo: Avenged sevenfold Mathieu: Incubus Léo: Don Broco / Paramore Ladislas: Incubus

credit Ilan Benitah

What is your favourite song to play live? Ludo: Monkey Tricks Mathieu: Under your skin Léo: Hypnotized Ladislas: T.I.M.E Do you have any rituals when you play live? Yes we have one: Before each show we're forming a circle and we scream a strange sentence ( that I won't translate haha) : “Famille de crasseux” with a typical “French Guadeloupean accent” ! Very weird !

You have recently bought a tour van that you have named: Kowabunga, is there a story behind that? We used to travel by car for years with the band (I’m sure you can imagine the way it feels to travel in a “classic car” with 4 peoples in it + the most part of their gear in it except the drum and cabs ) . We recently had enough money to buy a French old van (1992 ! power to the 90's!) , A wonderful and vintage “Renault master”. In the past we also travelled with a 4X4, we gave him a name: The “Norris” (something in it reminded us the Texas and “walker Texas ranger”...). For this new van we definitely needed to give it a name too. We were all agreement that this van look similar to the Teenage mutant turtle van, so we decided to call it Kowabunga ! Our readers love merch, especially tees. Many of the readers would probably also love Ryan Gosling, this may seem a random question to people who don’t know you but how on earth did you get Ryan to wear one of your tees? Haha because Ryan is a Rocker ! Watch him closely in the movie “Drive” and you'll see that he's the type of guy who prefer “distortion” to some “Dance beats” ! Your T.I.M.E. Demo version was used as a soundtrack of a Red Bull video that I could not watch for more than a few seconds as I am scared of heights! How did that feel and how did that come about? We love the way Red bull try to overpass frontiers through sports and mixing this point with music. I think we both share the same visions on some points. They needed some music for some footages and we were very happy and honoured to give them some of our song for that purpose. We have good friends working in Red Bull Family and we'll be happy to make some future cooperation with them if needed. What is in the Future for you guys? Any plans that you can share? We don't know what's gonna happen in the future years, it has always been like that since the beginning. Music in like a bet and you learn to live with the impression that you walking in a big cloud. But I feel that the best is yet to come for us. Future will tell!

SONG WRITIN For the second instalment on song writing, I was lucky enough to interview Phil from Daylight Hours, the guys in Eight Days of Autumn and the guys in Day Break! All of which who are capable of putting together a rad song. If you haven't already, expect to hear about them in the future! What is the process you go through to create a song? (eg, you write the chorus first then base the verses on that etc.) Eight Days of Autumn: All of us have ‘bits’ we write, then at some point in time we come together and try and stick them together with peanut butter and pop-punk. Matching themes are good, so is bouncing off each other to get more bits. Basically we all get together and stick our bits together…..no wait. Phil: I usually write the hook of the song first and try and get a good chorus and then come up with a story to make the verses flow. Day Break: Our song writing process isn't very long; usually we just mess around and find a good chord progression, and then usually write about the first things that come to our heads! How do you find the inspiration to write your music? Eight Days of Autumn: We saw other bands being awesome and said “damn, want me some of that” Seriously, those dudes look like they have a bitchin time. We find inspiration by listening to the bands we love and through our day to day experiences. Phil: I basically take it from everything around me, love is a massive thing to me and I think I reflect that in my writing. I also wrote 'Save Me' which speaks for itself. I wrote Save Me about my life, I was struggling because our first EP "Brand New Tomorrow" wasn't written by us, it was written by an ex-member of our old band and we only helped out with some co-writing on it. After I finished save me I really felt proud and it will always be my favorite song as it was my first song I ever wrote. Day Break: Marcus - I usually write the lyrics about girls that I've been involved with.

Day Break Photos by Rhiannon Miller Photography

What's most difficult about writing lyrics? Eight Days of Autumn: The most difficult thing about writing lyrics is fleshing out ideas and combining all of our lyrical knick knacks to form some sort of coherent flow. Phil: I try to write about my life or experience and try to write music to help people but If I'm really busy and have a lot on my mind I struggle to write anything which is kinda writers block. Also sometimes finding a verse or a single word that fits a song is hard. Day Break: The most difficult parts about writing lyrics is finding something to write about and the best words to use Do you ever get writer's block? If so, how do you get rid of it? Eight Days of Autumn: Writers block occurs to us frequently…we often find it difficult to focus on doing stuff and holding ideas in our brains for an extended period of time. This is probably due to us being generation Y children with no attention span. (cause no one understands us and…and… shut up! You’re not my real mum!) We eat peanut butter and cheese sandwiches when this happens…it doesn’t help at all, but damn...they be delicious. Phil: go to the beach and feel the sand between your feet. Day Break: I get writers block all the time and I usually don't do anything about it, I just scribble out a sentence if I think of one and find the right song to put it in. If you could write a song for anyone to sing, who would it be? Eight Days of Autumn: If we could write a song for anyone to sing, it would be Dan Lambton from Real Friends because he injects raw emotion into every single lyric he sings. Sam wanted to say Stephen Fry but don’t listen to him, he’s an idiot. Phil: I mean I have my favorite artists but I like the music they write and I would want to co-write and sing it with them. I’d be happy for anyone to sing my song as long it could make you dance. Day Break: I would write a song for Alex Gaskarth because he is my favorite.

Any tips for those wanting to write their own lyrics? Eight Days of Autumn: Don’t sit down and try to write lyrics. Good lyrics come at random times, so write them into your phone, dictate them to your butler or write them on your friends face whenever you think of them. Phil: listen to music that you like and go beyond that style of music to learn different art forms, try and write anything and keeping going at it cos you will eventually have something amazing. Day Break: Just write about anything that comes to your head or about experiences that you've gone through.

Where do you start with the instruments? Eight Days of Autumn: With our hands‌haha‌ Generally Jye or Matt has some starting point, be it a vocal line or chord progression/riff which we go from and work to fill all the blank bits. Seriously though, you will need a good pair of hands. Phil: I take my song to Adam, because he is the best at that. I write a shell of a song like lyrics, melody and sometimes like some basic chords. Adam creates the song and makes it sound amazing! Day Break: I usually do the instruments first and then put words and melodies over with that and I usually start with finding the right chord progression.

Do you think it's more like just trying different chords and note until it fits in with the lyrics or sounds cool or is there a different way? Eight Days of Autumn: More or less we have a vague idea of how a new jam should sound, then it’s just the matter of painful and bloody trial and error until we agree it works. Phil: Well Adam is just amazing and he definitely plays chords on the piano and builds notes around it. Day Break: The way I write is by coming up with a good chord progression and riffs above that and then put words and melodies after you have the basic instrumental backing. Is it difficult making all of the instruments work together? Eight Days of Autumn: This is usually the easy part as once you have a basic structure/chord progression you need to abide by melodic rules to fit new parts to the song. It’s just a matter of experimenting with different ideas. Phil: When you have Adam in your band it’s not, plus Anthony can make the best beats to any song. I never say “hey do this or that” he just plays something and usually first go it’s like Wow! Day Break: Not really, if you know what instruments you’re writing for you know what will work and what won’t.

Do you have any techniques that you use to help create instrumentals? Eight Days of Autumn: Jye. He’s the riff guy. Basically, Jye records rough demos of original riffs and sends them out to the rest of the band to receive feedback. If we all dig it, we start experimenting with it, adding parts to it. Phil: Practice and learn your favorite songs, don't give up cos playing in front of people is the best feeling. Day Break: Not really I just mess around with chord progressions and other things like riffs. Any tips or hints for anyone trying to create their own instrumentals for a song? Eight Days of Autumn: You can’t force the creative process. As with lyric writing, occasionally instrumental parts just play through your head at a random time. The tough thing about this is you can’t really jot down a riff so you need to find a guitar or a piano or a 50 piece orchestra… or a kazoo to try and replicate the riff running through your head. Phil: If you can co-write with people then do it because you learn so much and learn their ideas and techniques, also try different instruments like try and write on a piano. Day Break: Just mess around with things and when you hear something that sounds good just build on it! Thanks guys for your time in answering all my questions! I hope the readers enjoyed this as much as I did interviewing you!

JANUARY Simple Plan started out the new year of 2013 with a bang. They had instantly started out the New Year by performing at Niagara Falls, which was filmed by Entertainment Tonight Canada to ring in the start of another year full of music and achievements. Click here for Part 1: After Simple Plan’s performance on New Years, they flew to Asia on January 5th to begin their tour across Asia. They chose to have this tour during January because they had initially planned this tour back in 2011, but due to Pierre’s medical condition at the time, it was cancelled until further notice. During the welcome party in China, Simple Plan let it slip that they had the intention to release another DVD in the near future, along with the EP, which we now know is set to be released November 29th of this year. Also, during this tour, the guys performed Jet Lag with Kelly Cha for the first time. On January 10th, the band visited Hong Kong and Chuck went to the “Canadian International School of Hong Kong” where he spoke with fans and signed autographs. Later that day, the band spent the rest of their day in Hong Kong where a few interviews were conducted and they played a show afterwards. After leaving China, the band posted a vlog on their YouTube channel where you can see their meeting with Kelly Cha and talking about how they lost their suitcase. Throughout the month of January, Simple Plan had announced quite a few tour dates, Simple Plan were set to play a few shows at the Punk-Spring Festival in Japan, Check out the link here. The guys also officially confirmed their attendance to play at Gasometer in Vienna, Austria in June. Also, later on in the month of January, they announced their future appearance at Le Batacian in Paris, France on June 17th. Both Pierre and David also flew to Paris to take part at the NRI Awards with Marie-Mai, where they were nominated Francophone Duo/Group of the Year category. Before accepting this award, the guys had an interview with the NRI radio.

Another show that they had also performed was a free show at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada to kick off the hockey season. Unfortunately, since Sebastien was in Cambodia at the time of this show, for the second time in Simple Plan history, they had to call in a replacement, who was Marie-Mai’s former guitarist, to temporarily take his place as rhythm guitarist. Check it out here. Despite the fact that they hadn’t set out on an actual tour yet, it was good for them to still stay active by travelling and playing for their fans in between writing their 5th album and putting together their EP. During the month of January, Simple Plan had also been recognized for their role as humanitarians for their work they’ve done with their very own foundation, the Simple Plan Foundation. The foundation was started to help raise money to help teens in need, along with helping children, those who are sick, and people with various disabilities. They also wanted to be able to help people find a passion in life and to support music therapy sessions to help young patients. With this foundation, Simple Plan was awarded the Personality of the Year Award at the Radio Canada and La Presse Le Meileur de nos memes, the best of ourselves, award and on January 15th, the Canadian Minister of Culture and Communications, Maka Katta, personally congratulated the band. He said that through their humane actions, they show the respect they have for their audience and that they help to give young people the opportunity to succeed in life and find what they are passionate about. He had really admired the talent of the boys and their willingness to use their success to give back to not only the community, but their fans.

Regarding their music, Simple Plan’s single Summer Paradise (feat Sean Paul) from their latest album, Get Your Heart On!, managed to reach the 59th spot in ARIA charts (which is the music chart in Australia). Summer Paradise also surpassed Maroon 5’s Moves Like Jagger, One Direction’s Live While We’re Young, Justin Bieber’s Beauty and a Beat, along with LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem. While Simple Plan may not achieve the recognition they deserve in other countries like the US, they definitely gain popularity in their home country, Canada, along with Brasil, Australia and Japan. Although Summer Paradise didn’t necessarily hit high up in the charts with K’naan or Sean Paul, they later chose to re-release the song and music video with an American band, MTKO, in hopes to receive more recognition back in the United States again.

FEBRUARY

Similar to January, the month of February was still very busy and jam-packed for the guys. Sebastien started off February by helping out a good cause attending an annual benefit that he had previously gone to the past two years. At the benefit, they raised more than $600,000 for Sainte Justine Hospital. While Seb was at the benefit, Jeff had spoken up about the relationship between Anglos and Francois for the first time at the CBC Homerun Music Panel. A few days after, Simple Plan had delete announced more tour dates in Asia this spring with Shanghai, China on March 26th being added on the tour. On the 5th, the guys released a “special video” saying that they were inviting the fans to go to the Punk Spring Festival to see them perform live in Japan

The next day, Jeff and Seb represented the band by making an appearance at the Diamond Jubilee Presentation in Ottowa, and they were one of 58 others who were seen “dedicating themselves to the service of their country, citizens and community”. For their effort and participation, Simple Plan received the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Jeff and Sebastien continued to stay active with events by joining Richard Laraveie for the taping of the cooking show, where they prepared tempura and miso soup and was said to be aired some time in March.

On the 13th, Man of the Hour was officially said to begin on air once again for another season of banter and laughter. It continues to air on Wednesday at 8pm EST and re-runs every Sunday at 3pm EST on idobi radio, but you can also download or listen to older eps free on iTunes.

Simple Plan announced another tour date for the Asian tour on the 14th, saying that they would be playing at the M-Space venue on March 24th in Beijing, China, with another date being added on April 2nd in Tokyo as well. On the 22nd, the guys had released yet another date on the Asian tour where they would make an entrance at Viva la Vida in Jakarta on March 17th. Music wise, it was announced on VIMN International Media Networks that one of the most played music videos in the top 50 throughout 2012 on MTV was Summer Paradise, after being played over 10,000 times. Seb has also continued with his own side project, along with assisting his brother Jay with pursuing a further music career, along with a long time friend, Audrey Jolin. Since then, they’ve still continued to write together, hang out together on personal time and record songs with each other. It was on the 19th that Chuck and Pierre continued to hint about them recording new songs for what are potentially in the EP that is being released very soon. There were also quite a few anniversaries and milestones celebrated during the month of February. One of them occurred in the very beginning of the month, where on February 3rd, it was the 12th anniversary of David’s official first show as a member of Simple Plan where they opened for Our Lady of Peace at Laval University in Quebec City. A little over a week later (the 12th), it was the 5th anniversary of Simple Plan’s 3rd album, which was their self-titled album. Exactly a week later (19th), Simple Plan and their fans celebrated the 11th anniversary of their infamous music video, “I’m Just a Kid”. Three days later, we celebrated the 8th anniversary since the single off Still Not Getting Any… Shut Up! was released.

March

March started with a day in the studio of Chuck with the Madden Brothers. The drummer was in L.A. with Pierre to record some songs for the EP, and so he decided to meet his old friends from the Good Charlotte!

On March 3rd David posted a photo on twitter of him with Chuck on his motorbike.

On March 11th, Chuck announced that the band was gonna perform at “La Gibelotte Festival” in Sorel on July. Here’s the video: On March 10th, Chuck attended a celebrity Hockey Game in Montreal. This event was made to raise money for a nursing home. He was the team captain!

During March, Jeff and Seb took part in a cooking show, “Ricardo’s” and a fan posted the video of that episode on youtube. Part 1: Part 2: During this month, the band announced that they were gonna release a Japanese version of Summer Paradise with TAKA from the band “ONE OK ROCK.” They recorded the song in L.A. (same period of the meeting with the Madden Brothers) and this version is included in the Japanese version of “Get Your Heart On!”.

April

April saw the guys on the last leg of their mini Asian tour, and being back on the road means more pics, posts, tweets and blogs. Not only were the guys hitting up the usual social networks, but they were also starting to experiment with some new ones, much to fans delight. It’s great to see the guys not only rocking the stage, but also taking in the sights in which ever country they are playing.

It was during their second show in Tokyo that the guys surprised the sold out crowd with One Ok Rock’s Taka joined them on stage to perform the latest version of the song Summer Paradise.

It was also during this time that MTV finally screened the MTV EXIT documentary that Simple Plan had filmed the year before in Sapa Vietnam. The footage shows the guys meeting the locals of a local village where they learn more about the issues of human trafficking and exploitation. Part one Part two Part three Part 4 Back home, the guys had a week to recover from their ‘Jetlag’ before again fulfilling scheduled commitments; the closing ceremony of the Ma Zone D “On Stage with Simple Plan and Desjardins” contest as well as an autograph session at the Salon International du Livre de Quebec book fair. But this did not mean they would simply sit at home doing nothing, in fact Chuck spent some of his time not only hanging out with, but also doing a little collaboration work with the two-piece California based band MKTO.

He also took some time out to enjoy one of his other pastimes taking in a hockey match with one of his buddies, before taking in a little sightseeing in Santa Monica.

Sebastian was working on some of his solo projects and helping other artists with their song writing.

Following the success of the From Sound To Emotion exhibition in Montreal, the band took part in another exhibition. In preparation for the 2013 JUNO Awards, the organisers set up various attractions including an exhibit entitled ‘The Power of Music: Sustainability & the JUNOS” which featured an interactive listening and learning station dedicated to different sustainability themes. The exhibit featured many JUNO nominated Canadian artists, including our own Simple Plan recognising their charity work. While Jeff was taking the time to prepare for his upcoming motorcycle exam, David and Pierre where keeping their downtime to themselves. There was also some special news regarding SP’s unofficial 6th member Patrick Langlois. Pat was joined in Las Vegas by close friends and the guys where they celebrated Pats upcoming wedding. Now that is one party I would have loved to have been witness too.

Before Seb and Jeff finished off the month by making a guest appearance on Penelope McQuade’s talk show on Radio Canada. Watch this here.

MAY

May saw the guys continuing to enjoy one of the longest breaks they have had in months, but here is a quick round up of what has been going on this month. David finally checked in with fans, letting them know he had returned to South Africa. Once back and after fulfilling some SP duties, David could finally catch up with friends and a little Japanese food.

Sebastien continues to work on new music. He is currently working with a Canadian singer Wilfred Le Bouthillier and well as some other projects with his brother Jay. Watch the vine here

Chuck apart from hanging out at the beach, and his media obligation, he took the opportunity to take in a game or two of hockey over his time off. Pierre celebrated his 34th birthday. Happy birthday Pierre! Jeff having sat his motorcycle exam finally received his licence. Jeff also attended the wedding of his friend and radio host Julie StPierre.

A 4 page spread featuring Simple Plan appeared in this month’s issue of Experience BMW magazine, a magazine which is distributed to BMW owners in the Greater Montreal area. The bi-lingual article included a short interview with Seb. Warner Music Japan released the official music video for the Japanese version of ‘Summer Paradise” featuring Taka from ONE OK ROCK. Watch it here. To mark the release of SP’s new version of the song Summer Paradise, Marc Andrew from MarcAndrew.com hosted a contest with the chance to win a drumstick signed by Chuck Comeau, a $25 iTunes gift card; a Centraide photoshoot poster as well as a copy of Simple Plan’s Get Your Heart On. (I didn’t win ) Jeff and Seb were among those invited to the 92nd annual conference of The Union of Quebec Municipalities. The theme of this year’s even was ‘The elected officials, engaged citizens” with the focus being on women and young people. On behalf of the Simple Plan Foundation, Seb and Jeff presented $20,000 to Association des centres jeunesse du Québec (The Association of Youth Centres in Quebec) as a way of helping create job opportunities for young people in the area. Having returned from South Africa, David attended a press conference where the program for this year’s festival La Gibelotte was announced. Chuck attended the annual media and business C2MTL conference in Montreal, where he was a part of the panel entitled “The Beat Goes On”, hosted by Mitch Joel with discussions revolving around the business side of the music industry. Watch it here.

may cont...... Seb and his brother Jay hit the red carpet at l’Olympia, in Montreal, or the release party of the 2012 winner of the singing competition Star Académie Jean-Marc Couture’s new album “Si tel est ton désir”. Before Sebastien was again seen later in the month at another red carpet event, this time it was the Gregory Charles show in Montreal. Fans were left wondering when Pierre and Chuck announced mid month, they were in California filming a “little something something” which included a Vespa. A few days later it was announced that the ‘little something something’ involved the guys from MKTO who Pierre and Chuck had co-written some songs with recently. It was finally announced on May 24th, that what had actually been happening that day on the beach in Cali, was the recording of another version of the song Summer Paradise made especially for their US fans and featuring MKTO. A sample of the song was released via Buzznet.com and was also able to be purchased on iTunes. But we would have a little longer to wait for the actual clip.

Merch, MERCH and MORE MERCH!!! What better way to round out the month? With SP announcing the release of new merch. YEAHHHHHH!!!! I know I jumped at the chance to grab one of the special limited edition (only 50 to be made) skateboard decks! Although I will admit I am still waiting for it to arrive :’( Hopefully Santa can help with delivery and it will make it here by Christmas.

JUNE June was a good month for Simple Plan with a small European tour and some new music. At the beginning of the month, they went to Vienna for a headlining show on the 7th. 2 days earlier, on June 5th, the guys celebrated Seb’s 32nd birthday. As always, he got lots of birthday wishes from fans on Twitter! They played their show in Vienna and headed to Germany the next day to play at the Rock im Park and the Rock am Ring festivals. Simple Plan have played both festivals many times over the past few years. They played their regular festival set list, videos of their performance can be found on YouTube. The same day they performed their first show Kosmonavt, Russia, they also released a new video for their smashing hit single Summer Paradise, featuring MKTO. There’re several versions of the song out now, and each one is special and absolutely amazing! As Pierre announced on Twitter, he started working on the record in his home studio. June also marked the two-year anniversary of their latest album Get Your Heart On! which was released on June 21, 2011! For the rest of the month, the guys took some well-deserved time off, only exception being Seb’s weekly radio show “Man of The Hour”, which he presents along with Patrick Langlois, an old friend of the band.

october

October wasn't too busy for Simple Plan, except for some events like the recording for the new album and the EP that's coming soon. Starting with the guitar that Jeff donated to the Université de Sherbrooke’s School of Music. The guitar was used by Jeff when he was a student of the Montréal conservatory, so it meant a lot to him. Besides this, as the Australian Warped Tour is going to happen, the band gave a lot of interviews saying how they loved Australia and how they were excited about it.

As October is the Pink Month, Warner Music Australia in collaboration with Sharpie and Converse launched a project called "In Their Shoes", which consisted of musicians signing and customizing a pair of plain white Converse shoes so they could sell them on eBay and raise money. SP was asked to do it and they did! Check it out: Meanwhile, Pierre had time to co-write a song and took part of the music video with Faber Drive!!! The song was Too Little Too Late and, as it was partnered with the MUCHFact (A Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent.

Twitter Talk

David – I know I for one was excited with SP

being back on tour. But maybe not for the obvious reasons as most cause I was actually hoping that by being back on the road, David would tweet more, but sadly this wasn’t the case. ☹ At least we have been able to follow him by viewing pics from the Oz Warped Tour.

Pierre

– Pierre was still admiring his ‘winter coat’ (aka his beard) before sampling some Bouvier wine, which wasn’t that bad. Pierre was hoping the preview of the SPEP would keep us all happy until album #5 came out. Then he was on his way to the airport, Australia bound WOOOHOOO! But First it was there was a little layover in Vancouver, and a quick bite of Sushi.

Jeff

– Jeff had the best Halloween ever with his little monsters. Then it was time to learn some classics for his project with Ubisoft, but also a hint at the possibility of more music in his life in the near future. Having worked on his new places for the past six months, Jeff got the final look at the logos before they opened in the next few weeks. Then the boys had to learn the lyrics of their new song before the SP foundation benefit event. Jeff thanked his friends for the referrals when it came to finding new staff for his new projects, which he says will be opening in December, and be daring. But there was also success for his last venture, with Mangiafoco winning the Stone Cold Stunner award in the 2013 Eater Awards. Then it was off to Vancouver, where Jeff discussed his involvement with Ubisoft’s Rocksmith 2014 60 day challenge, before heading onto Toronto where he met with two underground rockstars. Then it was time for him to pack his bags for Australia. Arriving early, meant Jeff could hang out at the beach as a way of curing his jetlag. But he didn’t want anyone to know he was hear just yet ;) Checking into his hut in Coffs Harbour, it was time to meet the locals, and prepare for the rest of the Warped tour.

Chuck – Chuck and the rest of the guys grew up listening to No Use For A

Name, and where proud to be included on the Tony Sly tribute album. But there was also another album they were working on, the SPEP which only needed the last song to be mixed, and it would be all done. After taking in the special show celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Self titled Blink 182 album, it was time to fly back to Montreal for the annual Simple Plan Foundation benefit, and also a guest appearance on Pat’s TV show, where there was a special little surprise for fans, a little teaser of the upcoming EP. Chuck tweeted that this year the SP Foundation was able to donate $265,000 which in turn benefited over 20 organizations dedicated to helping young people in need. He also expressed his sadness to Filipino fans of the destruction caused by the Haiyan Typhoon, and announced the foundation would be donating $10,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to help with the relief efforts. Also as part of the special benefit event, the guys played one of the new songs off the EP, Lucky one. Then the news we had all been waiting for, Chuck finally tweeted the details of the new EP, and Australia would be able to get their hands on it first. But until then, fans would be treated (or tormented) with more teasers over the next few days. Then all too soon, it was time to board the plane for the 15 hour flight to Australia, where they would not only be playing Warped, but also the EP would be available in stores.

Sebastien – Seb dressed up as Clark Kent for Halloween, but thought everyone else looked better. Working in the studio before the sun came up felt like cheating; however it seemed Seb was struggling with the time when having to appear on morning TV, before finally being able to relax in his easy chair with a glass of wine and of course....... Then he was off to play outside for a bit. With the approaching season finale of MOTH, Seb was both excited and aroused. Yet sometimes going to bed is Seb’s favourite time of the day. Sunday was family time, before preparing to head down under, even if that meant having to listen to the guy in front of him saying “Cawabunga” during the flight. Touching down in Australia, he found himself catching up with Jetlag again, as well as a new name. With them all reunited, it was time to take to the stage on the Australian Van’s Warped Tour.

What a great story from the band we all love. They change lives everyday. Great meeting you Jen and keep your pinky promise!

Eskimo Joe: Wastelands Tour Support Acts: Red Engine Caves, Rainy Day Women - both local Perth bands Katie and I arrived at the Astor Theatre after sharing food at the Grill’d burger restaurant next door. The Astor is an old movie theatre (movies still play there) which doubles as a venue for concerts and plays and other performing arts. The feel of the place is intimate and that was perfect for Eskimo Joe and their support acts. The first support act, Red Engine Caves was an indie/rock/alternative group that played a blistering four song set. Most notable moment of this band was when Katie said to me they reminded her of Cousin It because of their long hair. I was impressed by the drummer of the band, he was going full pelt on his skins seemingly ready to explode off the stage. Drummers make the band. Or at least a good sense of rhythm does. The second support act, Rainy Day Women were more of an Indie/Poprock feel with tuneful melodies reminiscence of Coldplay or even our own Eskimo Joe. They played a six song set giving a shoutout to Eskimo Joe as they ended (the singer said that an Eskimo Joe album was probably the first album he bought). Eskimo Joe. The band we came to see. These Fremantle boys made good were just the best I’ve ever seen. This was the first time I’d seen them live, and most definitely not the last. They played a mix of old and new songs. Every single song never missed a beat. I can’t remember every little detail but I will share some highlights with you.

1. Kav talked a lot during the night which was good, it gave the gig an intimate feel and it was obvious how much they still loved Perth/Fremantle. They are all such humble men and that was obvious in the way they performed and interacted with the crowd. 2. Smoke. One of the fan favourites according to a Facebook poll that the guys put up before the tour. Kav said he was surprised that people wanted songs that were already being played live. 3. Before they played London Bombs Kav explained the meaning of the song. It came to them after the London bombings and Kav’s then girlfriend was living in London at the time so it hit close to home for them. 4. The songs from their newest album Wastelands, were well received with quite a few people dancing and singing along. My favorite of the new tracks was the first song they performed, Running Out of Needs. It's catchy pop rock and it is a fresh sound for the guys. The show finished at 11.45 including the encore which ended with everyone singing From the Sea, one of their best known hits. One of the best gigs I've been to go the last few years. Definitely up there next to Coldplay and Simple Plan.

Set list Running Out of NeedsNot Alone New York Smoke London Bombs What You Want Sarah Every Harmony Losing My Mind? A Song Is A City (with Ain’t No Sunshine intro and outro) Disgrace Foreign Land Don’t Let Me Down Got What You Need (You Can’t Always Get What You Want snippet) Black Fingernails Red Wine Encore: Sad Song (Stu’s guitar lit up, Kav was wearing a glow in the dark ribbed top and pants) Love is a Drug From the Sea (Kav joined the crowd to sing and dance - the crowd sang the last oh ohs and clapped at the end)
