Chapter3

Book Review

This edition we are taking a closer look at Chapter 3 “Still Not Getting Any…” To break up the chapters the book has a focus on each member. This one is of course my favourite page of all as it is all about Chuck. I love the play on words in the intro as he does set the beat for the band, not just musically. Simple Plan are who they are today thanks to Chuck’s perseverance, as we learnt in Chapter 1 and 2.

Chapter 3’s title page image of David with the crowd behind him is priceless. 2003/2004 was a huge writing time for Chuck. I for one am glad that Chuck “did not want to be a one hit wonder” Seeing images of the songs when they were written is perfect, and I often just keep reading them. Due to the success of No Pads, No Helmets... Just Balls and their tours, Simple Plan got the chance to

add some extra rock into their songs by Bob Rock producing Still Not Getting Any... Chuck said it was the ultimate dream to work with Bob on this album Bob Rock tells us on page 137 that. “They love what they do, they do it well and they’re completely dedicated to the task.” Check out our feature on Bob Rock in the next few pages as well as the article on the photo shoot of the album cover. There

was much discussion of what would be the lead single of this album. “Welcome to my Life “was chosen. When I read in the book that Pierre actually did sit on top of that bridge I admit I freaked a bit as I am terrified of heights. The concept paid off though, a great music video was made !

SP got many promo opportunities through magazine’s such as Musique Plus, Much Music and Rollingstone Magazine.

We learn about the title of the album from David on page 142 : “It was a continuation of the jokey tone of our first album title. There was the obvious sexual connotations referring to our trademark difficulty getting it on with girls, but it could also be interpreted as ‘still not getting any’ respect.” Pierre kept busy in 2005 because as well as all the band work he hosted a tv program called Damage Control. He placed his TV career on hold when SP headed to Britain to do a two week tour with Avril Lavigne.

In this chapter we read about the many countries that SP toured in 2005 including Asia, US and my fav place for them to tour, Australia. I caught up with Marly and Renee (SP Friends) who were delighted to share their experience of this tour where SP supported Green Day and a local band called Kiss Chassy.

²

Well, my friend Carly and I arrived at the Entertainment Centre just after 7 PM and lined up for Merch. After I’d bought a T-shirt we went in to sit down, it was crazy !

At 8 PM Kiss Chassy came on. They wowed the crowd for almost 20 heart-stopping minutes, the said crowd, including Carly and I, screaming and getting into it. I didn’t think we could get any louder, but boy was I wrong… At 8.30 pmish when All American Rejects came on the screams escalated another notch as the guys proceeded to ply us with hits from their first and soon to be released album. I was surprised at how many of their songs I actually knew. They really got the crowd into it. When they announced that it was their very first time in Australia the response was ecstatic.

SIMPLE PLAN CONCERT Brisbane October 2nd 2005 “ Best Night of My Life !” _Well, before June 2nd 2012… LOL.

Songs from Still Not Getting Any... : Shut Up! ,Perfect World, Welcome To My Life, Thank You, Promise, Me Against The World, Crazy, Untitled. No Pads No Helmets... Just Balls : I’d Do Anything, The Worst Day Ever, I’m Just A Kid, Addicted, Perfect, God Must Hate Me. Extra : Grow Up, Happy Together – cover, I Believe in A Thing Called Love – cover, a rap (PIMP/Drop It’s Like It’s Hot) - cover. Throughout the songs they included the singing with their typical SP banter. The two most talkative were Pierre and David but you could see them all interacting together at various stages during the show. Pierre played guitar in Crazy, Untitled and Perfect. That was amazing. He splashed water on people and was getting every-

one to scream: “We have a problem… I think we have a problem here… so… I need you all to SCREAM !”. Pierre was everywhere almost at once, engaging the crowd and generally having a good fun time. He made faces, smiled laughed, got the crowd to jump and scream. When Chuck came into the audience down one side you should have heard the screams. One part that really got me hot under the collar was when Pierre and David started moaning and groaning into their mics (which had echo on at that moment) during Thank You. Then when the guys went off stage after Untitled we were all screaming for them to come back and Chuck came out with the Aussie flag and waved it before talking to us. When Jeff came back on after that Chuck was all like : “Oh, they’re coming back!” So cute… Then Pierre said : “I could hear all the screaming and I couldn’t help but come back to say… I LOVE YOU !” The screams after that were amazing. They then played their last three songs and at the end Pierre yelled : Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi !!!

However, the screams for them were nothing against the absolute adulation the fans had for the final and most important band of the night : SIMPLE PLAN ! Even at the mere sound of the band setting up was enough to get the crowd going and when the lights dimmed and the music began, the crowd erupted as the chords of Shut Up filled the arena. The guys had so much energy. Even Chuck at his drums looked like he was bursting at the seams.

And that was the end of the concert... Pierre threw his sweaty towel into the crowd !

a new love was formed. I remember staring at Pierre almost the whole time, thinking, “I want to marry him”. I had listened to Simple Plan’s CD (thanks to my littlest sister Tamara), and seeing them perform live was amazing. The jokes about Austranadians started which I think every girl was extremely happy to comply with.
I’m very, very thankful that Green Day chose Simple Plan as their support band.
Later that same year, the same group of friends and I went and saw Simple Plan at the Hordern Pavilion. But that’s another story… “

“ I was 20, my first mosh pit concert, and Green Day was performing with Simple Plan as support. I remember I left work early so Kym, Jon, Matt and I could catch the train to Olympic Park. Walking through to go to the floor area was something different. Especially when there were sign’s at the security entrance saying no knives and other weapons, and then we got pat down. Making me think what had we gotten ourselves into. But once we were in all was forgotten, as we tried to get as close to the stage as possible.
I had loved Green Day since high school, and remember getting Dookie one year for Christmas, and listed to it non stop on my Discman. I was so excited to finally see them perform.
However, as soon as Simple Plan came out on the stage,

( We look forward to reading that, Renee ! ).

On Page 154 of the book we can read about the making of the Untitled video. The concept was Chuck’s idea and it certainly makes an impact on everyone who watches it. I show my students this video when we are teaching road safety. Another example of SP big heart is them being involved in Live 8 on July 2005. Check out our article on this in the next few pages. In August 2005 they were voted “Choice Rock Group” at the Teens Choice award in America. They played Untitled live and were presented with surfboards by Hillary Duff in honor of the occasion. The rest of the chapter is all about SP touring the world as well as many concerts in their homeland. There are many beautiful images of their time sight seeing and enjoying the wild life. Chapter 4 would have to be my favourite chapter so far. I love reading about their adventures and their stories while writing, recording and promoting their second album.

Bob Rock

CHILL GUY !” -Seb

“I HAVE TO SAY HE IS A PRETTY

For their age, Pierre and Chuck are astonishing for their maturity and their almost military discipline when they write. In all my years of working in this field, I’ve almost never come across a band like that –they were a rare find. They love what they do, they do it well and they’re completely dedicated to the task. Bob Rock

Robert Jens Rock was born on the 19th of April 1954 in Winnipeg, Canada. After graduating from high school Rock moved from his home in Victoria (Canada) and became co founder of the band Payola$ where he not only played guitar, but also helped in the writing, engineering and mixing of almost all of the band’s songs. There song “Eyes of a Stranger,” was awarded a JUNO Award for Single of the Year in 1983. But it is not his stint as a musician that Rock is best known for. From his humble beginnings an assistant engineer at Little Mountain Sound in Vancouver. Rock has gone on to work with some of today’s music legends such as Metallica, Bon Jovi and Simple Plan and produce some of rocks classics.

His work within the music industry has been acknowledged by means of 7 JUNO Awards including the 2007 Juno Awards for his lifetime contribution to popular music, where he was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS). Melanie Berry, CARAS President said at the time; “Bob is a musical craftsman whose wide range of talents show no signs of slowing. He has helped to define rock as we know it today, and we are very proud to recognize him in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.” As well as these prestigious awards, Rock has also received nominations in 21 other categories including Jack Richardson Producer of the Year, Recording Engineer of the Year, Composer of the Year and even a nomination for Canadian Entertainer of the Year in 1987, as part of the group Rock & Hyde.

“Bob Rock is the king of guitar tones, and he’s like yeah, you do your thing, do your thing on your own and then I might put my fun and my two cents in there” Jeff

Bob Rock is a living legend, I’m really honoured that he is recording me personally, and the band, of course. David

SONG OF THE MONTH Shut Up ! Shut Up ! was the second single released from the album Still Not Getting Any… Chuck says this about this song ” ‘Me Against The World’ and ‘Shut Up !’ were written in reaction to our detractors, people who said Simple Plan was trivial.” The track could be interpreted as a boy telling his girlfriend to “shut up !”.

“Perfect song !!! It Helped me to express myself.” “it’s just... really really me !”

Brett : “Lol this first came out this was my anthem for my sister!.... As she was always saying to everyone “just shuuuup !”... So I would walk around singing “Shuuuup” in reference to my sister !” Erin : “Shut Up’ takes me back to high school when It was considered socially unacceptable to listen to Simple Plan by my peers. It means the same thing to me today as it did back then...if you don’t like their music ‘shut up, shut up, shut up don’t wanna hear it.” Leeann : “I don’t’ see this song as being about one particular person or thing, to

me it’s about life. When everything’s getting to much and you feel like your constantly being put down, this song is like hitting the pause button and giving your self a chance to breath, relax, be yourself without fear of what others think or say.” Jodie : “Shut up has helped me too stay strong when life has gotten me down it has picked me up many times over the years no ones gunna bring me down.” Sue : “It reminds me of my teenager telling me to shut up when I’m nagging him lol.

94:

The video starts with the band walking down a street. They go to the Millennium Baltimore, a luxury hotel in Los Angeles. The guys go inside the hotel and, while walking, we can see Patrick for a few seconds in the video. Once inside, they take their instruments and they start playing during an elegant dinner. The band starts to destroy everything, jumping on tables and this is where Pierre Bouvier first does his knee dance. The younger people in the room start to like it, however, before the last chorus, a bodyguard says to the guys that they’re in the wrong place. The conversation between Pierre and the bodyguard is : Bodyguard : “Dude, there’s been a major mix up.” Pierre : “Are we in the wrong place ?” Bodyguard : “yeah !” Pierre : “I thought something was up !”

Time goes back and the band is finally playing in the right place, in a club, with all their fans around them.

In September 2004 Simple Plan had to choose the first single from their second album “Still Not Getting Any…” Jason Flom, the head of Lava Records, preferred “Shut Up !”. During a conference call Chuck and Pierre told to him that Welcome To My Life was better and they were true. In fact, “Welcome To My Life” made it into the top of the charts then on American radio and “Shut Up !” never did. The song was recorded in 2004 and the single came out on February 22nd, 2005. The song was 14th in the Australian Singles Chart, 44th in the UK Singles Chart and 99th in the US Billboard Hot 100. Simple Plan’s set list starts with this song so for all us fans we associate it with the start of the concert! It is an amazing song because it’s energetic, fresh and everyone has dedicated it to someone ! Live Rock Am Ring 2011.

album cover shoot After joining the Van’s Warped Tour in the United States for several dates in July 2004, the guys from Simple Plan had a photo shoot with famous director and photographer Chapman Baehler, known for his many photographs of artists such as Iggy Pop, Green Day, My Chemical Romance and many more. He also, seven years later took photographs for GYHO!. Simple Plan and Baehler had developed the concept of the cover of the album, Still Not Getting Any, which was scheduled for release in October 2004. The idea was to present the group with humor, at different stages of their lives. For this, they had to use professional makeup artists to achieve to old look, requiring facial prosthetics, wigs and costumes. The photo shoot took place in Los Angeles. Baehler had chosen three places, which were - A Suburban House, - A Golf Course, taken on the green, - A retirement home. There were limited editions and international releases. Check out these great images from the shoot !

STILL NOT GETTING ANY...

The World Tour

In September 2004 Simple Plan finished the recording of their new album Still Not Getting Any... They started promotion the day after with interviews at Musique Plus in Montreal and MuchMusic in Toronto. The same week, they appeared at AOL Sessions, TRL and Fuse in New York.

In October They went to the United Kingdom to support fellow Canadian singer Avril Lavigne on a selected date on her Bonez Tour. They still remain a good friends with her ! Shortly after, on October 26, they flew to New York to officially launch their new record. To get their record out to the world and to get as many people as possible to listen to it, they toured pretty much non-stop for two months. They played shows in Japan, Australia and all over Europe. They also played shows with the Plain White T’s and Paramore ! It wasn’t until Christmas 2004 that the guys finally took some well-deserved

time off. But just like other people all over the world, they were shocked by the events in Indonesia. A tsunami that is thought to have had an energy of 23,000 atom bombs, crashed into the east coast of Sumatra. The guys promised themselves to do something to help the victims. Shortly after their Christmas break they went to Mexico to promote their new album. At that point, their singles Welcome To My Life and Shut Up! Had become big hits around the world and opened up new doors for the band.

In February 2005 They attempted MTV Asia Aid alongside Kelly Clarkson, Hoobastank, Good Charlotte and Alicia Keys to support the victims of the tsunami. At the end of February, they returned to Europe for a couple of shows and then took off to Australia! They played soldout shows with Green Day in some of the largest halls in Australia.

In April They went to a couple of places they’ve never been before, such as Copenhagen, Italy and Amsterdam. They again took some time off, but continued the tour in July. They played the Live 8 concert which was a pretty big thing for them! After touring Asia for a while, they attended the Kids Choice Awards on August 2, where they performed their new single Untitled (How Could This Happen To Me). It was an amazing performance and

they got a lot of good reviews from critics. They then went to Latin America where they had a really big amount of fans at that time already. Shortly after, they returned to Australia for their first headlining OZ tour.

In November They played a big Canadian tour. 19 shows, between November 22 and December 17, each sold out. Their biggest show was on December 9 at the Bell Center, which is one of the biggest arenas in Canada. After the holidays, they returned to Europe. The tour lasted from mid January to mid February. Over all, they toured for one and a half years and played shows in more than 10 different countries all over the world. On top of all that, their record certified platinum in 2005 with more than one million sold copies world wide.

Live 8 was a huge event.

It featured many notable musicians from all around the world for this one cause. The hopes of having this concert were that it would bring attention to world leaders on the issue of poverty in Africa. Live 8 was not only one concert, but a series of concerts located in ten different countries, including Canada. Simple Plan was lucky enough to be asked to participate in this event on the 2nd of July, 2005.

Of course it wasn’t all easy and smooth. Simple Plan had actually booked a concert less than 24 hours before Live 8 and had to rush there. That wasn’t all though, they also had to perform in a whole new city on the same night! Wouldn’t it have been crazy if their bags and equipment got lost ? Oh wait, it did! So not only were Simple Plan tired, stressed and jet-lagged they also had to borrow instruments. But of course we have always known Simple Plan as that hardworking band and they did just that. Live 8 was a huge deal for Simple Plan. As not many of the musicians performing really reached out to the younger generations, this was the perfect time to gain some new fans. The guys also thought they would be able to set some examples for the serious issues happening. As Chuck says in the SP book “We wanted to play at home, and also because there weren’t many bands from the upcoming generation in the show. We thought it was important to make people in our age group aware of our concerns. We wanted to help them realize that these are serious issues. We can’t remain indifferent and close our eyes to what’s happening in Africa, either.

Living here, we’re so privileged!” Simple Plan was delighted to perform in their own home town with so many fans enthused with their music. It was the first time people in Quebec had really started to notice them. It was also the biggest crowd they had played for at the time. Jeff loved having all of his friends and family members there being able to see him and the rest of the band perform. It seems that after that concert, Simple Plan’s career just continued to rise, and even today Simple Plan continue to rise, getting more awards and higher chart numbers.

For those of you who follow Sébastien Lefebvre and Patrick Langlois’ radio show, Man of the Hour, Season 11 returned with a bang on February 13th, 2013.

Featuring a new form of the theme song, as per usual, remixed by our very own Seb. The show was even an hour long this time ! I cannot remember the last time that the show was an hour long, due to Pat and Seb’s scheduling conflicts with their careers. They also claim that they didn’t make the show an hour long again for the fans, but I seem to think that the constant asking of the fans changed their minds a bit. Come on, a half hour of Pat and Seb isn’t enough ! The recurring theme throughout the show was ‘comebacks’. Comebacks from both Man of the Hour itself and from various bands such as : Fall Out Boy, Blink-182 and even Justin Timberlake, Patrick’s former man-crush. Those of you who tuned in heard Fall Out Boy’s new single, My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark, which is a very good song. Also, they played, Pretty Little Girl, from Blink-182’s EP Dogs Eating Dogs. Justin Timberlake had also recently made a comeback in the music industry and they played his song Suit and Tie, which Patrick admitted that he wasn’t too crazy about. Justin Timberlake had performed Suit & Tie at the Grammy Awards, featuring Jay-Z, which Pat and Seb mentioned throughout the show. I personally thought that the songs were good and had gotten high praises, for the most part, which is a good sign for the future. While the good selection of music has been continued, the banter has also remained ! The topics ran from Valentine’s Day, the Grammy performances, new albums, and music that effects your driving performances. How could anyone not love the random and funny moments from these fantastic hosts ?

Since the premiere of the show was a day before Valentine’s Day. You know what that means ? Guaranteed talk about the holiday of love. Sébastien brought up a good point while talking on the subject. He said that girls like romance and that the guys are the ones that have to go through all the trouble for them (flowers, chocolates, romantic plans for the evening, etc). Seb was also teasing about having to have a valentine for the occasion, so perhaps he was hinting at something, perhaps he wasn’t. Something else that Seb had managed to say on the topic was an opposite “Valentine’s Day” celebrated typically on March 14th for the men, along with some suggestive things. I have no idea where he got that from, or if it’s something people actually do. Maybe it’s a Canadian thing… ?

Many people who are fans of Simple Plan and Man of the Hour are also familiar with, or fans of All Time Low as well. If you were listening to the show, you know that Patrick and Seb had mentioned ATL’s latest album, Don’t Panic. A song on the album, Somewhere in Neverland, was a song that they had played. After the song, the two guys made a comment or two as usual, saying it was a reference to Peter Pan, which I believe it is (at least according to ATL fans that I’ve talked to !). One of the final topics of the show had been about music and affecting driving. After listing a few songs that would be good to drive to (Billionaire, I’m Yours, Cry Me a River, Karma Police, etc), Patrick mentioned that his son had a song in particular he liked to listen to in the car. The song that his son enjoys listening to is Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’. Patrick mentioned his distaste towards the pop song, and I agree with him. Having to drive in the car with that song playing would ‘drive’ me insane ! If you had missed the show when it first premiered on Idobi Radio, you were also given a chance on Sunday, February 17th, so I’m hoping you tuned in. It honestly was a fantastic show. I’m glad to have them back together again, continuing the crazy banter and good music flowing. Make sure that you tune in for the next show of the season, every Wednesday at 8pm if you live in Canada/USA !

Interview In December and January I had the pleasure of meeting all the guys from For our Hero. They are all really nice guys who seem to love taking selfies on people’s phones! I love seeing these guys play, they sure put on a great show. Thanks to Geoff, Leon, Jay, David, and Beau. Nax has left the band now but i wish him all the best for his future. Geoff was kind enough to answer all my questions! Cheers Geoff. How did you guys meet ? Most of the boys went to school together or were within the same friendship circle. I met Beau on a blink-182 forum and was kind of introduced to everyone via that platform.

storming names that fit this new package and For Our Hero felt the most fitting as to why we were all playing music and how we all found one another. Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations ? I think all of us love pretty much everything these days. When I was younger I would pretty much only listen to punk rock- I know Leon loved the Chilli Peppers, Dave was super into metal and Beau liked all When did you first start these electro/rock bands. making music together ? All music has value in it I think it was May or June, though, we learnt that pret2007. ty early on. How did you come up with the name For Our Hero ? Our band used to be called “The Playground”, but it didn’t really mean anything and a bunch of us didn’t like it. At the end of 2007 We were almost at the stage of bringing Dave into the band, we’d just got a new drummer and written 2 new songs that were (what seemed so at the How does your song writing time) a significant step up usually go? Is it a group effor us. So Beau and I sat fort or does Beau write all down and started brain- the lyrics ?

Dave will write all the music, Beau will write lyrics/ melody to the music, it’ll go back and forth a few times and then come to us. Generally things don’t change too much, but sometimes our producer might have an idea for something different, or Leon might want to put a guitar part here, or a different drum parts there, etc.

How do your rehearsals usually go ? Slowly. We turn up an hour late, run through the set, jam for half hour, eat, run the set again and go home. We book 6 hour sessions and end up only using 3. Before big shows or tours we’re generally more productive though. We hire out a studio. What do you look forward to the most about playing live ?

Mostly seeing everyone you hear from online. Performing is such a rush . It’s a pretty humbling experience to have people want to watch you play. Is there a track you like to play live the most ? I think Mister Prozac always goes down well. You usually do a cover, what is your favourite cover ? Mine would have to be “Some Nights” by Fun. In fact I liked you singing it better than Fun! Haha, thank you. We did a Gaga cover once which I really enjoyed. Paparazzi I think. What do you do when you come off stage ? Generally just dry ourselves, change clothes and head out to meet everyone.

Do you have a favourite concert that stands out as the best ever concert that you played ? Big Day Out was pretty awe inspiring. When we played the Sydney Opera House that was crazy too.

They had grand pianos in each dressing room and the windows looked out to the harbour. That whole night was surreal. Many of our readers are huge All Time Low fans, what was it like touring with them? Any funny moments that you can share ? We only did an acoustic show with them at Fist2Face in Ringwood, but they were super nice guys. It was right as So Wrong It’s Right was coming out so they were no where near the size they are today.

I freaked out because I thought we were going to be sacrificed or something. 2012 was a busy year for you, a new EP, a new single, many concerts, What was the highlight for you ? We finally released our debut record Strange Days and put out the music video for Don’t You Dare. That was a super fun night.

How did you celebrate when you knew that you were playing at “Big Day out?” Was this a dream come true for you guys ? I don’t think we really did Do you have a great story to be honest. We found that you can tell us about out in November but wertouring, for example have en’t allowed to announce you ever left anything im- until late December, so we portant behind ? were always cautious of Every tour is so fun. When celebrating in case circumwe were recording in the stances changed. FortuUS, Leon I stayed out too nately they didn’t! late so ended up crashing You just released a new on the floor of this girls single, Take the night has a great catchy tune and great house- and it was fully lyrics. I love it ; can you tell decked out with skulls, me who is the female singblack roses, a life size er? Is there a story behind mummy replica, candles, the meaning of the song ? etc. It looked like the set Thank you so much. It’s of Charmed. It was our first night and my first time probably our most poppy track so we were ... in a different country and

concert Review

On Saturday the 15th of December For Our Hero were headlining a concert in Craigieburn about half an hour outside of Melbourne. I love concerts like this, more small and intimate concerts. The group of friends that I go to concerts with went straight form the Masketta Falls out to see them. After Siri got us lost, as she did not get the importance of seeing one of our fav bands, we finally found the venue. (nearly two hours from home)At the door we were told we have missed most of the bands and could only see For Our Hero. They must have thought we were mad but we cheered and ran into to try and get up the front. Well when we got in there was only one line of people and they had just begun to play. We were in our element; we knew the songs and the band and some of the other people did not. Soon we were in the front row next to people that were at the Masketta Fall concert, we smiled and waved and jumped throughout the whole concert. The band gave this concert just as much energy as any concert even though there were not many people in the crowd. Huge credit to them for the effort. Highlights for me was the eye contact that we all got and playing “Mister Prozac” and their new single

“Take the Night” They also did a cover of Fun’s “Some Nights” Which was better than Fun doing it. (Maybe I am biased just a little ?) After the concert we bought some merch and waited for the band to come out. We got individual photos with them and a whole band pic. Jay and Geoff took many selfies on my friends phones and some of the silly photos are classic. (I,out of respect for the band did not include them!) However if anyone wants to see Jay looking like a duck feel free to ask! This concert was well worth the trip. Not knowing at the time that it would be the last time I see Nax play with the band, in hind sight I am glad we made the trip. Full credit goes to the band for the performance and the meet and great after the concert. One girl was in tears as she told them it was the best day of her life as she met Masketta Fall and then For Our Hero. They were so lovely to this girl in particular. I bought tickets to see them the week after but sadly was unable to go. I hope that Nax leaving the band does not mean that they stop making the amazing music that they have been. Please like them on Facebook as well as giving them a listen.

interview

NEWS FLASH ! The Never Ever fly to Ne w York in February to record new music. I spoke to Lani just befo re they left. When this magazine is released you will be in New York recording new music. How did this opportunity come about ? We were extremely honoured to have been invited by the producer, Shep Goodman to come over and record with him in New York. Is this new music similar to the music your fans know and love ? It’s definitely still TNE, we’ve experimented more with the style of the title track, Breathe so hopefully you guys dig what we’ve come up with.

Do you feel being supported by your fans ? eg have they bought merch ? Our fans have been incredibly supportive of this opportunity we have been given and to tell you the truth we would be nothing without our TNE Family. We have been hosting a huge merch sale with all proceeds going towards the NY trip; our fans have really risen to the occasion. We hope that this was a trip that the band will remember and the music that they record we will all love ! I am sure it will be !

concert Review

On the 19th of January I headed into Melbourne for the Diveny concert with supporting acts For Our Hero and The Never Ever. I was keen to go as I wanted to know what Shaun Diveny’s music was like. I was never much of a Short Stack fan but I was willing to give him a chance. It was an under 18 concert but I went to sell merch for The Never Ever. When I turned up to the gig there were so many teens lined up out the front to get in I knew it was a sell out but did not expect so many people lined up so early. I chatted to a mum that was out the front waiting and in my usual style we got on really well and I added her on facebook. I said that I would keep and eye on her daughter and friends although in hind sight there was no need as it was a safe concert for teens to go to. I headed around to the back door and was quickly let in much to the annoyance of the teens. I was glad that looks could not kill ! I then set up the merch store with Lani and Pat being careful not to wake sleeping band members. Once that was done I was able to see the bands do their Sound check and check out the venue. I am of coursed biased but this was the first time I had seen The Never Ever play an acoustic set and I thought it was perfect. I am sad that Jess left the band and I wish her well for her future. The Never Ever played a neat set then were followed by For Our Hero. Being there surrounded by these talented young musicians made me realise how lucky I am to be involved

with these bands. They are talented and full of enthusiasm. Even after them being up all night filming a music video they were awesome on stage and happy to meet fans and have their pics taken. Thanks for all the selfies on my phone guys ! Diveny was ok. I found him singing Short Stack songs a bit cheeky. His new song sounds the same as INXS’s “Suicide Blonde”. That is just my opinion. I felt he did not mix with his fans much but after the show was over I heard that he had. One moment that I will never forget is when I left. I walked down the stairs of the venue; it was about half an hour after the show. I opened the door and had 100’s of teenage girls scream and look at me while their faces dropped in sadness. It was so funny ! I felt like saying sorry to them all !

Brianna Marsden mets Diveny !

The next day was The Never Ever Concert at Fist to Face with A Sleepless Melody and Cooper Street supporting them. Last year I interviewed A Sleepless Melody, if you would like to see our interview with them click here. They were as great as ever, singing their songs as well as a cover of Ed Sherrin’s “Little Things” which was so much better than the original, that is my opinion. Cooper Street were new to me but were enjoyable. The Never Ever surprised us with an addition to our favourite song of theirs, “Breathe” with “Thrift Shop” played in the middle. The band did a sweet meet and greet leaving their fans with some lovely memories for the day as well as some great pics. Once again it was a pleasure to see and catch up with The Never Ever! Stay tuned for more details about their new music. After the show The Never Ever, Emma (our photographer) and a friend Caity walked to Ringwood Lake to take a few images to complete a great day. Check out these photos that Emma took and look on her facebook page. We gave them a rope, our magazine and some letters and this was the result !

It’s awesome !

I went in December with my mom and we both really enjoyed it ! The expo is first of all about how music can affect your emotions, that’s why it’s name “musik ; from sound to emotion”. The expo is separated in seven section, the first 6th are about how to make music with your emotion and the 7th, my favorite, is about Simple Plan. Through the whole expo, you have a mp3 that shows you some sounds and videos.

R

ev

ie

w

Everything is about music. There’s also some interactive game where you can listen to what kind of sounds goes with witch emotion. There’s a place where you have an electric guitar, and a video of Jeff teaching you how to play Welcome To My Life, and I’m Just A Kid, I loved that part !!!

Also, throughout the whole expo you get to create your own song based on your emotion. That as great, even if my song was not that good though... After each section, there’s a little video with one of the SP boys telling me what was in the section, I enjoyed these vids ! Haha.

Now the Simple Plan section. A lot of people who went there said that it was a shorter, 3D version of the SP book. And that’s true. In the room, the walls have two sides, there’s one section per album, there’s some videos of the guys in tour (some vlogs), there’s also all the prices they have won (because there’s alot !!!). There’s a little section about the fans, with some fans letter-gifts etc... And in the middle, there is the big things, instruments (chuck’s drum, Seb’s guitar on the Shut Up video, a broken bass from David, Pierre’s guitar in Crazy’s video, and Jeff’s guitar), some cloths (Pierre’s shirt in I’m Just A Kid’s video, Seb’s shoes in Astronaut’s video, David’s shirt in Crazy video), and some more tour stuff and everything !

There’s also a little wall for each boys, and on David’s on, it says David has a dog tattoo inside the mouth... kinda creepy !

If you want to know more about it, it’s still on until March 2013, or you can tweet me.

FAN OF THE MONTH It is my pleasure to introduce you all to Hanine from Lebanon. I first met Hanine when we were involved in the DVD for SP for Personality of the year in January. Check out what she has to say. If you are keen to be Fan of the Month, please email us to apply !

When was the first time you heard about Simple Plan ? In 2005, their 2nd album had just came out and I had three best friends who were obsessed with them. They introduced me to them. When was your first SP show ? I didn’t get to go to my first SP show because they unfortunately couldn’t make it to my country but I’m travelling to see them soon! For How long have you been a SP fan ? Since 2005, so around 8 years. How many times have you seen them live ? Zero times so far. What do you like the most about Simple Plan ? How kind and loving they are to both their fans and the world. What’s your favorite possession of Simple Plan and why ? The CDs are definitely my favourite. Without them and the music, there would be none of that. Describe each member with one word. Dave- Crazy. Jeff- Adorable. Pierre- Magnificent. Seb- Funny. Chuck- Caring. Favorite Simple Plan song and why ? It’s kind of hard to choose one song because every time I do, I end up changing my mind later. I’d say ‘Crazy’. Do you have any tattoo related to Simple Plan? And if you, don’t would you like to have one ? I wish I could have one but my religion is against tattoos, sadly.

Apart of SP, which other bands do you like ? All Time Low, Avenged Sevenfold, Mayday Parade, The Summer Set, The Maine… If you could say anything to Simple Plan right now, what would you tell them ? I love you and I will always support you because I’m sure you’re going to witness some great success even if not in the near future. What’s your favorite part of ABP- Okay, now pick 2 songs of the No FY ? Pads album and say what do you The part where Jeff gives a fake number think are the real meanings beto French lovers. Haha. hind them : If you could ship each member My Alien – It’s about someone not finding with other artist, with whom anyone compatible to them while everywould it be and why ? one else around them is in a relationship I’d definitely put David with Avril Lavigne, so they lie about having found someone Seb with Patrick (haha!), Jeff with Coeur even greater than everyone else they de Pirate and Chuck with Pierre. They’re know. just so adorable together! You Don’t Mean Anything – it’s about If you could spend a whole day someone that was hurt by another person with SP, what would you do ? so much that they want to show them that Show them around my country and imthey don’t care about portant monuments. Maybe go to a them even if they deeply do. recording studio for a while and jam toFavorite lyrics off No Pads ? gether. “You’re what I never want to be.” Best Simple Plan memory ? Jamming to their songs with my old best friends and covering them. Have you made friends thanks to Simple Plan ? Lots of them! Mostly online though like Jen, Marian, Julia… Favorite SP quote ? One of my favourites: “I was in my bed sleeping because my alarm did not go off. So I had to skip the shower, and uh, I always skip the shower anyway.” –David. Favorite Simple Plan video ? I can’t choose. Written by @justjenrees

- Jeff -

#Talk special presentation and we don’t mean presenting his new haircut to the world.

- Sebastien -

“And just like that, February came around”. Yeap, that’s how Seb started off the month on Twitter. Then it was time to get down to business, whether it was appearing at a triathlon, recording with family and friends or just hanging out with long time buddy and fellow Man of the Hour, Seb did this and so much more this month. Relaxing and watching the Super Bowl (even though it did appear he was reflecting more on the memory of Family Guys premier than the actual game) before it was time to suit up with Jeff for a very

Seb sent an SOS out to fans in his hunt for a vintage laser disc player and a crash course in Japanese emoticons before chilling with Chady then heading up to the lake, even if it was frozen. He may have signed off just before this issue of the mag was finalised stating “That’s all folks! Until next we...” well, month where the mag is concerned.

He kicked off the month listening to TSSML being played on the radio and declaring he was in need of a holiday. Having some time off did take a toll in other areas with Jeff letting us know his fingers where bleeding after a practice session. On receiving the Queens Diamond Jubilee medal with Seb on behalf of the band, Jeff hinted that fans should now address him as Sir. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine celebrities being everyday people, but here Jeff is, tweeting about staying home and watching TV, showing off his cooking skills for his friends, taking his little ones swimming (even if one little boy did tell Jeff that he had breasts just like his mum) and dancing and singing with them in the kitchen while listening to GYHO and slopping tomato sauce on himself whenever he wears a white shirt (I thought I was the only one who did that). While it may appear that Jeff has been able to relax during his time off from the band, it seems like the opposite is in fact the case, with Jeff receiving more offers for TV appearances, music projects, and business ventures. While Jeff finds this stimulating he would actually like some time off. Well, that’s how I interpreted that particular tweet.

- Chuck After asking Pierre how they ended up back in the recording studio. Chuck showed j yet again just how humble the guys are when he thanked everyone for their Diamond Jubilee medal, apologising for not being able to make it to the award ceremony in person. Chuck sent a tweet to French fans after it was confirmed the concert scheduled for Paris had to be cancelled. Back in the recording studio Chuck joked about the name of the next SP album; “Chuck Comeau : Hahaha!! RT : The name of the new SimplePlan album is... drum roll!!! I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Pierre!!” At night, Chuck would curl up in bed, with a little light reading, before heading back to the studio the next day. Valentine’s Day was spent in the studio with Pierre, how romantic is that? Considering the weather David, Jeff and Seb where encountering back home, it was with tongue in cheek that Chuck tweeted about how bad the weather was in LA. There seems to bit a bit of speculation as to what the secret project might be, but Chuck was giving little away, instead just letting us know he was working on a cool project for their Japanese fans. (I wonder if the Green Tea Kit Kats were helping keep the writing juices flowing.)

- David As usual David was pretty quiet this month, and then when he did tweet, it was mainly in French. But from what I can work out David was really getting into some of Paramore’s new tracks early this month before wishing all the lovers a Happy Valentines and again taking off to warmer weather, this time, Amarillo Texas.

- Pierre After Pierre got his new prescription glasses, it was time to hit the studio with Chuck and some other old friends for a little writing and recording session. (Could this be the new EP, or another secret project?? I guess only time will tell) Hanging out in California is not all fun and games, or when it comes to Pierre, with him chilling out in Palm Springs with long time pal s from The Modern Shop.
