The brief calls for a sheltering structure at the ETH Science City campus to extend the existing outdoor seating area. The space is to be used for lunches and as an outdoor study area over the summer months. The site is a large open courtyard surrounded by modernist buildings, with several green areas, a reflecting pool and crossing paths connecting the campus N to S and E to W. We see the primary task of such a structure as providing shading and a sense of semi-enclosure for people, alone or in groups, to feel comfortable sitting, eating, conversing and/or reading.

The pavilion should also be sited on a green space in adjacency to the existing outdoor canteen seating. The green should have ample unshaded space which will be activated by the presence of the new structure. Options A and B (to left) both are adjacent to the canteen seating. Option A has the advantage of more unshaded open space as well as proximity to the reflecting pool.

Option A also offers the opportunity to create an additional path on which to situate the new structure affording connections directly to the canteen from the north side of the campus. However the structure may want some more privacy from the main walk so users don’t feel “on display”.

Use timber boards (in standard sizes) taking advantage of the linear fibre nature of the material. Create curved surfaces with these linear members by applying simple repetitive rules for transformations. All connections will be hidden and by their placement should guide assembly.

Iterations are shown here from an initial Grasshopper script whereby a generating component is copied and rotated around two axes. The output form is changed by: - changing the generating part - moving the location of the rotation axis - moving the location of the generating part in relation to the rotation axis. More parameters would be needed to guide the script to accommodate for the various requirements of the program.

Proposal in Situ

1. Rotate boards to take advantage of fibre orientation. 2. Use structural analysis to inform script growth - ie... adapt spiral degree and width/ thickness of boards to respond to stress in the structure. 3. Use massing of components to better differentiate spacial qualities - ie... more open on the east and closed to the west, encouraging connection to the water while providing more privacy from the main walk. 4. Move the growth points towards centre and so that canopy support structures begin to provide more separation of spaces than currently achieved. 5. Work on lightening density of canopy to achieve better lighting results.
