Interns survey global options in race for placements
Moving up: founders Sebastian Abigail (left) and Elliott Sparsis both secured jobs
Internship competition aims to help property students launch careers. Sarah Stewart reports
The Sociable Surveyors Global Internship scheme is back for a second year. The scheme, pioneered last year, offers the chance for property students to undertake all-expenses-paid internships with real estate companies across the world. All companies signed up to the scheme will pay the intern a standard wage of £250 a week. Following the success of last year’s scheme, six firms have joined the list of five existing companies willing to offer two-week placements (table, below). Jones Lang LaSalle, Berkeley Group, Malcolm Hollis
and Heron International have all committed to the scheme, and 30 positions are available in total. EC Harris has added Abu Dhabi and Capita Symonds has added Edinburgh to the list of locations, which includes Sydney, Paris and Tokyo. The application process involves the submission of a two-minute video describing the candidate’s motivation for a career in property and a brief exploration of a topical commercial issue, along with their CV. The deadline for applications is 30 April. After the applications have been gathered, Sociable Surveyors will shortlist 10 candidates for each position, which they will pass on to the firms. The shortlisted candidates will all have telephone interviews with the companies. The successful

students will be awarded their internships at a Hammerson-sponsored awards evening on 28 June. Hammerson chief executive David Atkins will be the guest speaker. Interns will go on to complete their placements between June and August this year. Sociable Surveyors was created by Elliott Sparsis and Sebastian Abigail, who secured graduate positions at Savills and Knight Frank respectively. “Whether talking about their dissertations or their views on the market, all the successful candidates last year showed a passion for property in their video applications. They sold their hearts out. We will be looking for the same commitment to the industry this year,” Abigail says. 9
