President Obama presents SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment Baldrige Award ORLANDO, Fla. – President Barack Obama presented the 2009 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award to SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment on Sept. 22. The ceremony, which recognizes worldclass achievements in quality, innovation and performance, took place during the National Outstanding Leadership Award Gala at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. “This award is a great source of encouragement and motivation to keep going above and beyond for our employees, our customers and our animal conservation programs,” SeaWorld President Jim Atchison said. Congress created the award, named after Malcolm Baldrige, the 26th secretary of commerce, in 1987 to enhance the competitiveness and performance of U.S. businesses. The process includes about 1,000 hours of review and an on-site visit by teams of examiners. “I had complete faith in our company’s evaluation for the Baldrige Award,” Atchison said. “SeaWorld employees have always had an exceptional work ethic. They deserve to be recognized for their determination to improve the experience of our parks’ 22 million annual visitors and also the lives of the animals who reside there.” SeaWorld has 10 theme parks across the country, jointly named the Worlds of Discovery. The SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Discovery Cove locations serve as homes for thousands of marine and land animals. As a leader in wildlife conservation efforts and animal rescue, SeaWorld has saved more than 14,000 animals since 1970 and has donated more than $3 million to 300 international conservation projects.
