BUS LINE The aquarium will be part of the Queens environment. The park and its public spaces would be a new art element in the district. The site offers as well a view of Manhattan which could bring people to come. With all the artistic locations and the restaurants, this neighborhood is bound to be active day and night. The aquarium is a family attraction, being entertaining and educational at the same time, it could include the neighborhood infrastructures for children in its programation.

From Manhattan it is easy to use the subway, with a station half a mile away from the aquarium.
FERRY LINES
Workout Factory
A bus line which route does most of the Queens drops the users right on the aquarium site. Ferry lines connect Manhattan and the Queens a mile South. The aquarium being an aquatic entertainment, these lines could extend to the aquarium site too.
The health dimension of the neighborhood could be included in the park design, this part of the city being less occupied by vehicles and quieter than Manhattan it allows people to walk or bike more easily.
Citi bike stations are scattered all over the city, which make it easy to rent a bike and visit New York.
Crank Cycling Studio
HEALTH
Not located in the core of New York which is Manhattan, the auqarium would be a destination on the other side of the East River. To allow that public transportations coming from Manhattan and the Queens must be well deserved all around the site.
BIKE STATIONS
MASTERPLAN
The building is located North-East of the site, its entrance defined by the concentration of public transportation access at this corner. Adjusting the footprint of the building to the city grid, it leaves room for a public plaza on the Queens side while the park will use the waterfront for a quieter green public space looking towards the Manhattan skyline. The park will continue the existing green Queens waterfront and serve as a destination equally as important as the aquarium for most of the New Yorkers.

AQUARIUM TO CAFÉ & ROOFTOP FROM THE PARK
Visitors get to try differents experiences . The main one being visiting the aquarium. The simple circulation in the aquarium helps visitors get through the experience without getting lost but giving them choice to walk wherever they want at the same time. Right at the beginning of the visit they walk down a ramp to the underground where the weight of the water and the size of the tanks give the feeling of being underwater. Going up back to the ground floor, visitors arrive at the penguins exhibit at the other end of the building and have the opportunity to go out on the terrace to have a look at the Manhattan skyline at the same time as watching the penguins. From the park, visitors can go up the slope to the rooftop and access to the upper floor of the building, where the café is located.

A really low-rise building integrated to the site, part being underground and the park covering the roof. With the green roof sloping down to the waterfront, the building mark is minimal in the landscape. On the other side, with its proeminent cantilever and the slightly sloped plaza, the entrance of the aquarium gives to the Queens the faรงade of a public building.

Second iteration. The tanks get curvier walls to be able to contain water . The circulation and display in the building remain pretty much similar to the first schematic design.

The main façade of the building is designed to show what happens inside: walk down underwater and come back on the ground. At the same time, depending of which side we see this, the building looks like it is emerging from or immersing into the East River.

Competition proposal. The second design was a little too conventional and expected so in this one the tanks take shapes that would create differents spaces and ambiances between them to make the walkthrough a little more entertaining. Skylights visible on the green rooftop allows natural sunlight into the double-height tanks.

PENGUINS EXHIBIT
Installed at the end of the building, in front of the Manhattan skyline, the penguins serve as the main attraction of the aquarium. Walking down the ramp at the very beginning to see the bottom of the tanks one big moment of the journey. The weight of the water sensed all around, compressions made by the tanks and natural light coming only above by the tank skylights make the visitors feel like they took a dive underwater.

FISH IN A BLANKET: Queen’s Cove Aquarium is defined by its sloping hillside, which provides much needed green space amidst the urban jungle that is New York. There exists a cultural tradition of people gathering on hillsides, and visitors who make the entire climb will find themselves rewarded by the unobstructed sight of Manhattan’s skyline—an iconic vista. From this point the visitor can make his way around the curvilinear forms of the aquarium’s skylights and enter the building through a rooftop café.

Plan development of the second aquarium iteration as it is much more organized and rationalized than the design proposed for the competition. The organization of the tanks is easier to read and helps define the structure more easily.
