LEADERSHIP

ARCHITECTURE

MY CAREER

I always seek to take on challenges and responsibilities at work and school. I am a confident decision-maker, presenter, and mediator.

DESIGN

My experiences range in scale and location - I appreciate complex problems regarding urban issues, engineering, and people.

RENDERING

Using photoshop techniques and various rendering softwares.

COMPUTER MODELING

Revit, AutoCAD, Sketchup, 3DS Max, ArcGIS.

FABRICATION

Design + Build experience with material finishing, joints, fasteners, welding, and cutting heavy materials.

GRAPHICS

I have learned to use high-quality graphics to quickly illustrate ideas and complement design work.

Architecture always has and always will be a significant interest in my life.

URBAN PLANNING

I have approached architecture projects with social and physical urban planning dynamics in mind.

TECHNOLOGY

Understanding and experimenting with new technology is an important influence in my design work, presentations, and life.

INFRASTRUCTURE / TRANSPORTATION

Travel experience has influenced my passion for transportation, and I continue to be fascinated by the natural and engineered systems in our living environments.

SUSTAINABILITY

I hope to continue my university training by designing good buildings that positively benefit their users and the surrounding communities. I hope to continue community involvement in my city and follow current local events within and outside the architecture community. Remaining relevant, engaged, and invested in the newest and best architectural work and methods, I will continue my effort to understand the latest building strategies, products, materials, and design software. My long-term career goal is to gain the experience necessary to manage projects, contracts, and business strategies. In collaborative environments I have found natural opportunities to be a leader, define a group direction, and problem solve with my classmates and colleagues. I am excited for new challenges and opportunities in my future.

I believe we must provide for the current generation without jeopardizing resources for the future. I also believe sustainability is a smart method for longevity and value.

TRAVEL

Traveling has always been an influential and inspiring part of my life.

River Metropolis is an experimental design to expand housing choice in downtown Chicago. Most units in River Metropolis include outdoor living areas that terrace towards an inner courtyard,. This design has advantages both for the residents and the city. The remaining space below is used as a commercial plaza and a marina. The mixed-use design separates commercial on the bottom two stories and residential on the remaining stories. A series of second story interior and exterior bridges allow easy navigation between shops, and a twelfth-story bridge includes circulation and a lap-pool. This design was completed with fellow student Julia Bauer. Drawing inspiration from projects by Le Corbusier, Bjarke Ingels Group, and others, we explored other geometric alternative to the unit arrangements previously used by these architects, arriving at a theoretical building concept for the Chicago River site.

K a ns a s C i t y D e s i g n C e n t e r I N D EPE N D E N C E AVE N U E VI S IO N As a part of the overall vision plan for Independence Avenue, we chose specific sites to demonstrate how the ideas might be put into practice. One example of these sites is at the currently existing Apple Market, between Askew Road and Monroe Avenue. Here a re-design could better incorporate the bus stop, the color palette of buildings in this area, turn the large parking into a multi-use space for farmers markets and other events.

(Right) Renders of Chestnut, Spruce, and School nodes chosen for their geographic, social, and developmental importance or potential. (Below) Extension plan of Chestnut node showing a path system reconnecting Independence Avenue with the unique and historic Kessler Park that frames the Northeast. (Above) One of the benefits of KCDC was the opportunity to present our project to different groups, varying in size, demographics, and professional qualifications. (Below) As a part of our work for the community, we produced a large model of the avenue and neighboring blocks. At the end of the year, we filled this model with improvements from our vision plan.

Completed design

The Kansas Energy Center was designed to house three separate but related organizations, the Kansas Geological Society, Kansas Geological Survey, and the Kansas Corporation Commission. All three organizations are partially limited by dated or unhealthy working environments, and would benefit from a new facility that houses these organizations together. The proposed solution to this opportunity is the Kansas Energy Center: One Facility that houses all three organizations, their offices, and a library of data designed to withstand a tornado. One of the key aspects of my design is to unify the building through the concept of an “indoor street.” This central public gathering area provides circulation and three key functions: an education zone, a café, and a hearing room for meetings and land dispute rulings.

KaNSaS eNeRgy CeNteR COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN This studio emphasized technical completeness, including construction details, structure, egress, and mechanical systems. Rather than simply duplicating construction drawings, I used graphic skills for design to better illustrate the key concepts of the systems in a more intuitive format.

maiSoN heNRi Eze, France A seasonal home for a grand prix driver, this house on a hillside in southern France meets the client’s desire for adventure and high style. It mimics the speed of his car with sleek materials and minimal design, reflecting the way at high speeds details blur and only the essential calculations of the driver, the road, and other cars remain. The house is entered from the drive at the second level, and offers full views of the hilltop city of Eze out the two story windows in the living spaces. Each end of the long home, hugging the hillside holds a guesthouse. One large master suite for the owner, and one smaller townhouse for a guest. They are then connected by an external structural frame which creates the sharp angles of the view-facing patio.

thameS theatRe London, UK This theatre was designed in my early years of school. I chose to cut letters from the building’s facade as a gesture to the many influential playwrights in Britain’s past. This was inspired by Jean Nouvels ghosted images on the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, and by a discussion in class about the writing on the walls at the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. Greater knowledge of building materials and strategies today might have inspired a different and more detailed approach, either lowering quotes and engraving them in concrete to be touched and viewed from eye level, or using adhesives on glass that could also protect from glare and excessive solar gain, but I still enjoy the idea that this building would advertise its own purpose through a beautiful and detailed facade ornamentation.

DeSigN + BUilD Lawrence, KS Fellow student Celeste Clayton and I proposed this stool design for our design / build warehouse at the University of Kansas. Jean Nouvels’ colorful museum floats above the museum’s gardens, separated from the street in a peaceful representation of the natural world that inspired much of the artwork in the collections.

I was impressed by the detail and variety of units in my professor Wojiech Lesnikowski’s public housing project we visited in Paris.

Pompidou Centre - Paris France

Barcelona’s vibrancy left a lasting impression on me. La Sagrada Familia, Barcelona Pavilion, Casa Milo, and Torre Agbar all impressed, but one of my favorites was the subject of this sketch - Park Güell.

I spent several hours enjoying Piano and Roger’s Pompidou Centre, and several more enjoying the bustling plaza outside.
