imagining paper’s last stand intro Will paper go the way of the Dodo? As you are reading this one more sheet of paper has been put out of work. Wrapped tightly in a ream with 499 of its closest relatives this once vital medium for the conveyance of ideas now lies dormant, unsure of its future, and its proper place in modern day society. With the advent of the iPad the proverbial death knell has been sounded, many hailing the iPad as the final nail in the coffin for printed media. To hail the coming of the end and to tribute the official launching of the iPad, March will be the month when paper makes its triumphant last stand in the heart of the Chicago Arts District taking up a month long residence in the showPODs.. As an invited participant you are being asked to dream up an installation which rethinks the role and potential of paper. Each participant will be supplied with one ream (500 sheets) of standard 8.5” x 11” paper with an ISO brightness of 92, and one empty showPOD. Paticipants will supply the creativity, imagination, and elbow grease to render the banality of 500 sheets of copy paper into a visually arresting and thought provoking temporary installation.

design criteria Each participant will be supplied with one ream of paper. The ream and the paper contained therin may be used in any way that the designer sees fit, with the caveat that the participant must use all 500 sheets in their installation. The material can be folded, printed upon, shredded, re-constituted etc.., and may be combined with fastners or other material as the individual designer sees fit. The installation should be of a scale significant enough to fill a typical showPOD. The showPODs are nearly uniform in their dimensions of approx 6’ deep x 16’ long (parallel to the street) x 12’ high.
requirements for installation Particpants are encouraged to come up with an installation that can be easily installed and taken down with minimal wear and tear on the showPODs. Each showPOD will come supplied with standard uoresecent illumination which cannot be changed, altered, or added to. Any changes or alterations to the showPODs must be restored back to their original state to include painting, perforations in the drywall, tidyness, etc... Stapling into the walls or any other textural alteration of the showPOD wall surfaces is discouraged. Participants will be allowed access to the showPODs for installation on March 6th and 7th, therafter the showPODs will not be able to be accessed until the deinstallation on april 3rd.
