WELCOME
JEREMY M. BATTJES Interim Director jbattje@uark.edu
Welcome back to another semester and our second issue of HPER Active. As you return to classes this semester I encourage you to take a break from the daily grind and visit the HPER building for one (or more) of the wide array of activities and programs available to you as a student and/or HPER member. As you can see in the following pages the HPER building and the Intramural/ Recreational Sports department truly have something for everyone. It is our goal to offer something for everyone on campus and what better way to see what we offer for you than to stop by the HPER and take it all in?! Whether your goal is personal fitness, weight loss, stress management, socializing or relaxation you can find it at the HPER. If group exercise appeals to you we offer classes ranging from aqua aerobics to group cycling (commonly known as “spinning”), belly dancing to yoga and everything in between. If the social aspect of recreation appeals to you why not drop in to join a game of basketball or make new friends (or enemies) on the racquetball court? For those who enjoy socializing as part of a team don’t forget about the 50+ Intramural and Club Sports and activities we have to offer, just stop by our website to start a team or get information on joining a club sport. The Donna Axum fitness center is a popular destination for those with fitness in mind, and if you have specific fitness goals why not sign up for a personal fitness assessment and sessions with one of our personal trainers? For those seeking a break from the stress of classes, exams, work and other daily stresses a swim in our Olympic sized pool or massage with our certified massage therapist might be just what you are looking for! Special events and programs offered throughout the semester also strive to provide something fun and different for our members, such events include Ladies Night on the Climbing Wall, Freezing 5 of 10K and Dead Day De-Stress Fest, not to mention the service opportunities also available with events such as our Campus Clean up. Regardless of your goal, interests or lifestyle I feel certain that you will be able to find something that appeals to you at the HPER building. So why not stop by and join me as we strive to make 2010 a fun, fit and fantastic year?! Jeremy Battjes, Interim Director

GREEN IN MOTION
Green In Motion The Department of Intramural/Recreational Sports is a major player in the campus-wide sustainability initiatives. We believe that it is the responsibility of every individual to actively support and practice sustainable lifestyles. Here are some examples of our sustainable practices: the use of “green” chemicals, recycling of cans, bottles, and paper goods, the purchase of organic clothing, the teaching of “Leave No Trace” ethical applications, the support of alternative transportation methods such as cycling, and the use of recyclable office supplies. Projects in the works are solar heating, energy capture from aerobic equipment, and ultraviolet sanitation systems for the swimming pool. We are excited about our sustainable practices and the plans for more initiatives in the future. Just as important, we are excited about doing these initiatives with your help.
