Awards and COMMUNITY INTRODUCTION

Ask any Auburnite why they live in the Foothill town and they will likely ask you why you don’t. From its official title as the Endurance Capital of the World to the home town feel, Auburn offers a little something for everyone. Nestled between the hustle and bustle of Sacramento and the natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the town transports visitors back to a simpler time. Interstate 80, once known as the Auburn Parkway (pre-1940s), brings travelers from near and far, while Highway 49 offers scenic views and a brief glimpse at what life might have looked like for the earliest of Auburn’s settlers. Auburn City Councilman Mike Holmes was born and raised in the foothill town and has watched it blossom into the lively community it is today. Holmes said the city’s diversion of Highway 49 away from the center of town, not only made it easier to get around, but made the town more pleasant to visit. “Things have changed considerably,” Holmes said. “Growing up in Auburn, it was a lot smaller. There were no traffic lights back then.” For the community, time outdoors is paramount. During the summer months, a variety of events fill the weekends – car and art shows, fireworks and street fairs are all here. When it comes to business, Auburn is no “small town.” It is the home of tech startups and big industry. A concentration on business on the part of city leadership has helped to make the historic town a growing business center.

CHAMBER COMMITTEES Auburn Chamber ~ Business Advocacy By establishing and maintaining dialogue among business owners and community leaders, Chambers have a tremendous impact on the growth and connectivity of a region. For more than 100 years, the Auburn Chamber of Commerce has served the foothill region, representing the interests of business and community. The Auburn Chamber serves small and mid size businesses, corporations, and community non-profit organizations. The Chamber is a collaboration of business people coming together to create one voice and diverse opportunitites to grow local business and the economy of the greater foothill community. A Collective Voice One of the primary objectives of the Chamber is to encourage laws and regulations desirable for the benefit of business in general and to serve as the “voice of business.” With the commitment of government leaders in the community, the Chamber is better positioned to provide creative business leadership and effective coordination of all interested individuals and organizations in solving community issues and initiating and following through on constructive community action. Government Affairs / Economic Development Team The Auburn Chamber Government Affairs / Economic Development Team meets monthly to review and discuss issues facing business on a local, county, state and federal level. Additionally, the team is committed to improve the economic base of the Auburn community by promoting diverse business and employment opportunities. Members work with city and county elected and economic development officials for the enhancement of the local economy. The Chamber represents nearly 800 businesses and their 12,000 employees. To effectively serve its advocacy role on issues of interest to the business community, the Chamber developed several years ago a Declaration of Principles which provides a philosophical framework for defining the Chamber’s position on public issues. Members of the Auburn Chamber are encouraged to actively participate with this important chamber tream. The group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30a.m. in the Conference Room of the Chamber offices located at 601 Lincoln Way.

Chamber ABOUT THE CHAMBER Founded in 1906, the Auburn Chamber of Commerce has a long history with an impressive list of accomplishments for business and community. The Chamber supports, represents, promotes, and advocates for business before local government and regulatory agencies. From its early beginings, local business visionaries established the Auburn Chamber of Commerce to, in the words of their charter, “have a central body, always organized and always ready to take up any proposition for the public good.” With those simple but direct words to guide the Auburn Chamber, we have worked with business leaders and local government to take a historic small mining and railroad town and transform it into a modern city. Today, the Auburn Chamber has a membership of over 750 businesses. The Chamber, a non-profit 501 (c) (6) organization, utilizes its Mission Statement as a benchmark against which all activities and programs for business, outlined in its Strategic Plan, are measured.

AUBURN CHAMBER BUSINESS HISTORY

DID YOU KNOW?

• That in 1928 representatives of the Chamber served on the Committee which attempted to obtain the 1932 Winter Olympic Games for Truckee and Lake Tahoe; setting the stage for the later efforts, beginning in 1954, to obtain the 1960 Winter Olympics (working with Wendell Robie). • In 1935, the Auburn Chamber initiated the first move to obtain funding and then led the campaign for the construction of the original City Hall / Fire Department in Downtown Auburn. • In 1940, the Auburn City Council authorized the operation of the Auburn Airport as a municipal project on a one year trial that took effect in 1941. The Chamber of Commerce formed a committee to raise the funds to purchase the present Auburn Airport for the City in 1946.

The Auburn Chamber Ambassadors are volunteers from the business community that serve as the public relations arm of the Chamber. Chamber HISTORY OF THE AUBURN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

It is the commitment and dedication of many community leaders and volunteers, giving of their time, expertise and abilities over the past 100 years, that has enabled the Chamber of Commerce to accomplish much for business and community. There are familiar names of local families (Morgan, Freeman, Lardner, Chamberlain, Lee, Robie, Walsh, Tuttle, McCann, Birdsall, Landis, Jacobs) who built or owned businesses and landmarks which are still very much a part of our community. These early business leaders, along with other distinguished community families, were the founders of the Auburn Chamber. Did You Know? • That on August 7, 1906 the Auburn Chamber was established for Auburn “to have a central body, always organized and always ready to take up any proposition for the public good.” • That the Chamber started its efforts for the improvement of what is now I-80 in April of 1909 when the present Interstate from Roseville to Auburn was still a county road. • From 1927 to 1929 the Chamber worked on the project which

History resulted in the first improved street lighting in the business district. • That in 1928 representatives of the Chamber served on the Committee which attempted to obtain the 1932 Winter Olympic Games for Truckee and Lake Tahoe; setting the stage for the later efforts, beginning in 1954, to obtain the 1960 Winter Olympics (working with Wendell Robie). • In 1935, the Auburn Chamber initiated the first move to obtain funding and then led the campaign for the construction of the original City Hall / Fire Department in Downtown Auburn. • In 1940, the Auburn City Council authorized the operation of the Auburn Airport as a municipal project on a one year trial that took effect in 1941. The Chamber of Commerce formed a committee to raise the funds to purchase the present Auburn Airport for the City in 1946. • In 1953, the Chamber actively supported the preservation of the Auburn Firehouse in Old Town, working with the City Council to preserve it as a historical landmark. • In 1954, the Chamber actively supported the Squaw Valley bid to host the 1960 Winter Olympics. • In 1972, the Chamber supported the negotiations for the

highlight the industrial/manufacturing facilities in Auburn. The suggestion and concept for Auburn Industry was presented to the Chamber by Bill Lipschultz (Attorney). • In 2001, the Chamber established the Auburn Community Performing Arts Center as an Ad-hoc committee of the Chamber, under the leadership of Monroe DeJarnette. • In 2004, the Chamber established a process for the endorsement of local candidates for local office, recognizing the importance of the Chamber effectively representing the interests of business • In 2006, the Chamber established the City / Chamber Power Breakfast; suggested by City Councilmember Kevin Hanley. • In 2007, the Chamber expanded its offices in the Historic Auburn Depot and celebrated 100 years of business history on August 4, 2007.

purchase of the Claude Chana Statue, believing the statue would be “quite a tourist attraction.” The Chamber established a “trust fund” to accept and manage the fund-raising for the purchase of the Chana Statue from Dr. Ken Fox. • In 1975, the Chamber encouraged and supported the development of an 80 acre Industrial Park adjacent to the Auburn Airport. The City of Auburn developed the industrial park and 25 years later the Chamber of Commerce coordinated and hosted Auburn Industry 2000. • In 1976, the Chamber advocated before the State Highway Commission for safety improvement to I-80 through Auburn. It took almost 20 years to get an approved design and construction plan for I-80 through Auburn in the early 80’s. • In 1981, the Hwy 49 Business Association was established as an association of the Chamber. Ray Yamasaki and Chamber staff member Fern Collett worked closely with businesses along the Hwy 49 corridor to form the business association. • In December, 1983 the Chamber first looked at a Cable Car (Trolley Car) like vehicle for the City of Auburn, but no vehicle was acquired at that time. The California Transportation Commission was looking at the possibility of light rail between Sacramento and Auburn. • In 1986, Auburn Mainstreet was established as an association of the Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber negotiated the contract with Thomas Kinkade for the Auburn Centennial Painting, unveiled at a dinner in October, 1987 which kicked off the Auburn Centennial Celebration in 1988. Ray Leonard and Ray Yamasaki were the key negotiators for the “Thomas Kinkade” painting. This same year, the Chamber (after 49 years at City Hall) was asked to help relieve critical space issues for the City of Auburn by relocating the Chamber office to offices independent of City Hall. • In 1987, the Chamber played a major role in the formation of the Auburn Symphony. Monroe DeJarnette was the organizer and inspiration for the formation of the Auburn Symphony. This same year the Chamber organized a committee to establish the Auburn Rodeo as the Wild West Stampede. After the first two operating years, the Wild West Stampede incorporated as an independent organization and assumed all management responsibilities for the annual Rodeo. • In 1989, the Chamber began a major restoration project for the preservation of the Auburn Railroad Depot, and negotiated the purchase of the “Coolie Statue” from Dr. Kenneth Fox, DDS. This same year, the Auburn Christmas Basket Program was established as a “standing committee” of the Auburn Chamber. • In 1992, the Chamber held the first Auburn Black & White Ball. Slightly more than 1,000 people attended and the event has been held each year since as a major business promotion and revenue funding event for the Chamber of Commerce. • In 1993, the Auburn Chamber received “Accreditation” from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a process and accomplishment that took more than 2 years to achieve. The Chamber has accomplished the accreditation process in 5 year intervals since 1993. • In 1996, the Chamber developed a unique transportation plan to provide a fun and convenient transportation link between Old Town, Downtown and the Hotels throughout the community. The “Auburn Trolley” (Auburn Stage Company) went into service supported financially by the Chamber, Old Town, City of Auburn, County of Placer, and the Placer County Visitor Center. “Big Red,” the Auburn Trolley, provided a retail oriented transportation service for 3 years. • In 1997, the Chamber established “Auburn State of Community” to recognize individuals in the community who give much to the community. This important program was suggested and encouraged by Chamber President Steve Snyder (Gold Rush Chevrolet). • In 1999, Leadership Auburn was established by the Chamber to provide important community leadership training, designed to identify and empower current and future community leaders to effectively address future community challenges. The Leadership Auburn program has now 186 alumni, and is one of the most effective programs of the Chamber of Commerce. • In 2000, Auburn Industry was organized by the Chamber as an economic development event to enhance community awareness and

AUBURN’S MANDARIN FESTIVAL

Auburn’s Mandarin Festival showcases one of he regions sweetest crops. The event is held in November at the Gold Country Fairgrounds with more than 200 vendors and more than 15 mandarin growers on site. The festival features the usual booths and stations, including tasting samples, restaurants, recipes, gifts and entertainment built upon locally-grown mandarin oranges. Local Boy Scouts are usually on hand to help visitors carry the fruit, which typically comes in 10-pound bags, to their vehicles as they leave. Attendance throughout the weekend event hits 15,000 on a bad year and exceed

After two-plus decades of expansion, the influence of the festival reaches far beyond Auburn. There are now 85 or more growers in Placer County and many belong to the Mountain Mandarin Growers Association.

AUBURN’S FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS PARADE

For years Auburn’s Festival of Lights parade in Downtown Auburn has drawn thousands of spectators. The event is rain or shine so bundle up, pack an umbrella or poncho just in case and watch the 100 floats parade down Lincoln Way and High Street and past Central Square’s Christmas tree. In the past, up to 15,000 people have attended to kick off the holiday season in Auburn. The annual tradition begins at 5:30 p.m. and is usually held on the first Saturday in December. Just imagine, an amazing night, as once again up to 14,000 attendees visiting the downtown portion of the parade route… Shop lights glittering, carolers singing, and all the ambience of the season. Children will delight in visiting Santa and his elves in downtown prior to the parade. All of this happens at a classic family event that is free to the public. of people who love them to four blocks of Lincoln Way. The event started in 1984 in the parking lot of Foster’s Freeze, where car aficionados would show off their sweet rides. Now the event packs throngs of residents and visitors alike to Lincoln Way. “I am just amazed at the quality of cars that are here in the Auburn area,” said Cruise Nite co-chair Bob Kennedy. “They bring them out of the woodwork.” The cars also come from far beyond Auburn, as Cruise Nite is a popular draw for car enthusiasts because they don’t have to pay to enter. While a few awards are given, such as Best Stock and Best Modified, the point of the show is to give families and car lovers a fun way to spend their Friday evening. “You can hardly walk down the street!” said co-chair Jack Kenny, who added that dogs are not allowed at the event, per the event permit from the city. Each Cruise Nite draws thousands of people, organizers said, with the most popular being the kickoff show and the September event, which includes a 9-11 memorial ceremony. The vehicles are from 1972 and older, and the only stipulation is that no motorcycles are allowed. People have brought cars, trucks and even vintage fire engines to the show, although organizers request they be informed ahead of time if a vehicle will require more than one parking space. Kennedy said people can expect to see cars as old as Model Ts, and in all stages of restoration. “Still, the majority of the classic cars are in pristine condition, with some so exquisite they hardly ever touch pavement. Visitors can enjoy several food vendors, including hamburgers, hot dogs, Mexican food and kettle corn. Pistol Pete’s runs a beer booth, and a DJ will play rock ’n’ roll throughout the night. Vendors pay a fee to set up at Cruise Nite, and after the bills are paid, any money left over from booths and event sponsors goes to the Downtown Business Association, Cruise Nite’s partner. The 2011 event raised $4,500 for the DBA.

OLD TOWN AUBURN SPRING ANTIQUE & COLLECTIBLES STREET FAIR

It may be garden variety junk. It may be junque that sends an antique collector into orbit. It’s all in the eye of the beholder. But for Auburn collectibles and antique dealer Paul Kashuba, making a connection and possibly a sale is more about giving something a good home. “It’s really about something someone doesn’t love any more and getting it to someone who’s going to love it again,” Kashuba said. Kashuba’s eclectic collection of junk and junque spills out of his Nevada Street shop. Across the busy Interstate 80, he’ll be joining more than 100 sellers setting up tables and displays for the 49th annual Old Town Auburn Spring Antique & Collectibles Street Fair, held each year in May. Kashuba has been a fixture for several years. He can’t remember exactly how many – somewhere between 10 and 12, he estimates. always the third Sundays in October and May – a part of his yearly planning. “These are the only ones I do,” Kashuba said. “It’s my town.” While buying trends have come and gone, the constant quest for the rare, beautiful or viscerally stimulating products from the past has kept the fair going. Linda Robinson, organizer of the street fair for 20 years, said the Old Town Business Association expects about 4,000 visitors on Sunday. A total of 130 vendors had committed to the fair by Wednesday. Some shoppers – flashlights and checkbooks in hand – arrive as early as 3 a.m., hoping to find the pick of the vendors’ goods as they unpack. Robinson said that other shoppers take a counter-intuitive strategy and wait until the end of the day before vendors pack up with hopes of snatching up a desired object at a bargain price. “It’s all about the thrill of the hunt,” Robinson said. Street parking areas will be designated with signs directing visitors to those areas close to Old Town and other nearby parking spots, she said. There will be no shuttle service this year. But Robinson said an area near the Valero

station has been designated for purchase pickups. Disabled parking will also be limited but drop off is welcomed in front of Mary Belles Restaurant.

FOURTH OF JULY

As the good times roll and fireworks dazzle, Auburn-area residents and visitors donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to go far to celebrate the Fourth of July. Local community service groups have joined together to create a special menu of family friendly events right in town. In Old Town Auburn, a pancake breakfast benefitting the Auburn Fire Department starts at 7 a.m. and continues until 10 a.m. Old-fashioned games kick-off in Old Town from 9 a.m. to noon. Foot races, gunny sack races and a watermelon contest are among the annual favorites.

One event in particular draws a large crowd -- watching kids climb their way to big bucks. It is literally a Crisco greased pole with cash at the top. The youngster that makes it all the way up gets the money. Independence Day celebrations begin in afternoon at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. There will be live music, games, several local food vendors and color guard presentations from the local police and fire departments. The final event of he day kicks off with a parade followed by fireworks.

Riders are coming from as far away as France, Germany and Austria to take part in the 2015 Tevis Cup Ride to be held Aug. 1. The Western States Trail Ride, popularly called the Tevis Cup Ride, is the oldest modern day endurance ride, having been held annually since 1955. As such, it has been the inspiration and model for the most challenging endurance rides worldwide. The ride begins at the Robie Equestrian Park (elevation 7,000 feet), south of Truckee and descends gradually to the Truckee River at the Midway Crossing on Highway 89. The trail takes a route through Squaw Valley, to Emigrant Pass ending in Auburn. The ride was first organized by Wendell Robie, an Auburn businessman and devoted rider of the Sierra high country. Many people in the 50s doubted that any modern-day horse could cover the rugged trail from Lake Tahoe to Auburn in a single day. Wendell and a few of his friends proved them wrong in August of 1955. He continued to hold the ride annually thereafter and organized the Western States Trail Foundation to preserve the 100 mile trail and the Ride. The Ride is sanctioned by AERC, the American Endurance Ride Conference. Each rider who completes the 100 mile course from Tahoe to Auburn within the 24 hour limit and whose mount is judged â&#x20AC;&#x153;fit to continueâ&#x20AC;? is awarded the coveted silver Completion Award Buckle.

The Tevis Cup trophy is awarded to the person who completes the 100-Mile OneDay course in the shortest amount of time and whose horse is in sound condition and “fit to continue.” The Tevis Cup was named for Lloyd Tevis (1824 - 1899) by his grandson Will Tevis, a prominent San Francisco businessman and early benefactor of the Ride, and was first awarded in 1959 to Nick Mansfield, riding Buffalo Bill, an eleven year old TB Cross gelding. The other major trophy, the Haggin Cup, is awarded to the rider whose horse is in the “most superior physical condition” of the first ten horses to cross the finish line. The Haggin Cup, named for James Ben Ali Haggin (1821 - 1914), was first awarded in 1964 to Paige Harper, riding his six year old Arabian gelding, Keno. The Josephine Stedem Scripps Foundation Cup was established in 1994 to recognize each of the finishing Junior Riders for their special achievement. The first Junior finisher was David Jay, Jr., who completed the 3rd annual Ride in 1957 Hal Hall

to rigorous Class IV whitewater river runs as well as easy Class II family river boating. Legendary whitewater runs like Chamberlain Falls on the North Fork and Tunnel Chute on the Middle Fork and the Gorge on the South Fork are full of white-knuckle excitement. The late afternoon Confluence to China Bar whitewater boating run just below the city of Auburn is popular on weekends. Swimming, fishing, and gold panning are also popular summer river activities. The Nisenan Southern Maidu native people lived in this river-canyon paradise hunting, fishing and gathering native plants for their sustenance. They wove exquisite baskets for trapping fish and gathering and processing foods, with the exception of salmon, that are still found in the river and canyons. Gold Rush history illustrated in Charles Weedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1850â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s photos of the Grand Flume are a chronicle of the deep labor and ingenuity that went into extracting gold from the river. Today, the rivers and canyons are being rediscovered for their irreplaceable natural diversity, scenic beauty and recreational opportunity by those wishing to explore and connect with the complexity of this natural world. he glass sparkles in your hand and the light catches the lace of foam on the edge. You’re at Knee Deep Brewing Co. in Auburn. The beer is cold and the conversation is flowing. Beer aficionados and Knee Deep newbies peruse the ample choices of in-house brews, many opting for the four-glass flight of sample-size tastings. Nearby are tables to taste and talk, while watching the beer-making process in action. Giant kettles and vats occupy most of the warehouse space. Lips meet amber liquid and an explosion of sensory satisfaction begins to engulf the taste buds. Perhaps it’s the light citrus notes dancing off a wheat-colored Auburn Lights that engulfs the palate. Perhaps it’s the sweet orange and coriander infusing the Belgian wit that tickles your tongue with smoky notes and a nutlike finish. Or a flavorful Last Minute Session IPA that combines six different hops for that distinctive “hoppy” experience. Is that lemon coming to the fore as your mind wraps itself around a complex blend? “Almost like a hops stew,” Kneed Deep taproom manager Kelly Crismon says. Then there’s the impact of the Simtra – a punchy mouthful whose bold hoppiness is a distinctive, lasting pleasure. A visit to Knee Deep means a chance to sample nationally respected craft beers. Tucked away in an industrial building in the Auburn Airport Industrial Park and open in Auburn since 2013, Knee Deep is creating a stir in the world of craft brews – picking up prizes like a gold medal at the U.S. Beer Championships in Atlanta for its Belgo Hoptologist. And it’s also picking up loyal fans – one beer drinker at a time. Well-known local musician Bob Woods was enjoying a Simtra Triple IPA on a recent Tuesday evening. Conversation turned to everything from the Giants (he witnessed the Bumgarner-Posey battery grand slam) to a chance he once had to “duel” onstage with guitar great Albert Lee (Lee left an admiring Woods with his jaw on the floor. But the Simtra was also in Woods’ thoughts as well as his taste buds. “It’s like a pale ale times three or four,” Woods said. “Yet it’s still smooth, not bitter. This is dangerous.” Woods was a first-timer at Knee Deep and the experience was a positive one. “I like this kind of industrial ambience,” Woods said. “It’s the kind of place you can just come to, relax, have a beer.” At a nearby table, Loomis resident Dan Anderson, his wife, Ella, and

daughter, Danielle, were sampling – first from three individually bought pints shared among the trio, and then from a further flight of four. In total, they were able to sample seven beers that way. They too were first-timers. They two were having a good time. Anderson sheepishly admitted that he’s a fan of a certain Loomis brewery but had heard good things about Knee Deep – enough to give it a try. “We feel like traitors – but we heard they have some good beers,” Anderson said. Anderson said he was particularly impressed with the Last Minute Session IPA. “I like IPAs (India Pale Ales) and this one had a nice aroma and the taste was good from start to finish,” Anderson said. “It’s very mellow.” The Knee Deep surroundings reminded the Andersons of Southern California’s Hangar 24, which also allows patrons to watch the brewing process. “It’s a fun part of the craft beer experience, to see the kegs and the hops and grains stacked up,” Anderson said. “It’s fun to see folks making good beer.” Jerry Moore, Knee Deep CEO and majority owner, says the key message the Auburn beer maker wants to impart is that people can continue to enjoy high-quality beers as the business expands.

“We’re not going to compromise for the sake of growth,” Moore said. “We’ll keep making beers we love and we’re good at making.” Founder Jeremy Warren started out as a home brewer in a Reno garage. Knee Deep became a business in June 2010. Moore came onboard in October of that year and the growing brew maker moved lock, stock and barrels to Lincoln. In the summer of 2013, Knee Deep found a home at an 18,000-square foot space in the Auburn Airport Industrial Park. Warren continues to oversee final recipes and formulas for beers. This year, the Knee Deep brand has reached into new markets in North Carolina, Michigan and New York. “That puts us into seven states and other states are interested,” Moore said. “But we’re waiting until we have the capacity.” In Auburn, Knee Deep’s taproom is an easygoing go-to place for locals and visitors. “Easygoing is the way we want it and that’s the way the beer business ought to be,” Moore said. “The first thing that attracts people is the beer. But along with the beer, people are drawn to the experience – the smells, sights and sounds of the brewing and packaging process – of the brewery.”
